The
seminar was organised on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl
Child, in collaboration with Civil Hospital Karachi.
Speaking
on the occasion, DUHS Registrar, Dr AsharAfaq, reiterated the university’s
commitment to preventing harassment and strictly enforcing laws against sexual
assault.
He
emphasised the presence of prominently displayed anti-harassment contact
information, with immediate action taken on received complaints.
Professor
Muzammil Shabana Ejaz discussed the challenges faced by girls in society, such
as early marriages and sexual abuse as she pointed out that young mothers
confront numerous health issues, and shockingly, 90% of women under the age of
25 lack access to the Internet.

Supreme
Court Allows Seven Muslim Women From Kerala To Intervene In Special Leave
Petition Challenging Sharia Law On Inheritance

2023
The
Supreme Court recently allowed a group of Muslim women to intervene in a
pending Special Leave Petition against the Kerala High Court's decision
declining a challenge to Sharia law of inheritance qua Muslim women as
violative of Articles 14, 15, 19, 21, and 25 of the Constitution. The SLP filed
in the Supreme Court seeks to ensure that a female Muslim child receives an
equal share of inheritance as a male child, when born to a Muslim father. The
SLP additionally seeks a directive to amend personal laws, arguing that the
Shariat Law concerning the inheritance of Muslim women contravenes Articles 14,
15, 19, 21, and 25 of the Indian Constitution. In the impugned order, the
Kerala High Court had dismissed the PIL stating that said issues cannot be
adjudicated by a Court in a Public Interest Litigation. The High Court had also
stated that it is for the Legislature to consider the issues raised and frame
competent legislation. Aggrieved with the order, the Petitioner, KhuranSunnath
Society, approached the Apex Court. Also Read - I Appear As A Lawyer, Not

Before Court The Single Judge Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul allowed the
intervention application filed by the applicant Safiya Muhammed and six other
Muslim women from Kerala through Advocate Prashant Padmanabhan. In the
application, the interveners have contended that practices discriminatory to
women in so far as inheritance among Muslims must fall foul of the
Constitutional mandate. The intervenors relied on the judgment of the Supreme
Court in the Triple Talaq case [Shayara Bano v. Union of India &Ors. (2017)
9 SCC 1 paras 43, 47,48 and 50] and submitted that the inheritance law in so
far as it discriminates against women must be held unconstitutional. The
intervenors argued that the issues raised in the current SLP have already been
addressed by the Court as it was previously determined that the 'Muslim
Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937,' specifically concerning Triple
Talaq, falls under the scope of Article 13(1) of the Constitution and should be
invalidated. Also Read - “This Is Like Bonded Labour”: Supreme Court Over No

Regulatory Committee The intervenors further stated that in the 'Triple Talaq
Case,' it was explicitly held that the 1937 Act was legislated before the Constitution
came into effect, and it squarely fits within Article 13(1) of the
Constitution, which means that the 1937 Act is considered a pre-Constitution
law, and it falls under the definition of "laws in force" as per
Article 13(3)(b) and if it is found to be inconsistent with the provisions of
Part III of the Constitution, it would be subject to Article 13(1) to the
extent of that inconsistency. Highlighting the disparity in Muslim inheritance
law, Applicant No.1, Safiya, states in the application that she is a divorcee
with parents, a younger brother, and a daughter. However, she is entitled to
only half of her brother's share in the inheritance. Furthermore, after her
passing, her property is divided between her brother, who already receives
twice her share, and her daughter. This complexity extends to her brother's
property, part of which goes to their father's brothers. The Intervention
application reads, "All applicants are directly affected parties and wish
to intervene in this case to provide assistance to the Court". It has also
been submitted that Shariat in its application to Muslims all around the world
has not been uniform and has undergone many reforms even in countries following
Islamic law. The SLP is scheduled for listing on October 30, 2023.

Afghan
Girl , Giti Farah,Founds Library To Preserve Reading Culture In Badakhshan
Fidel
Rahmati
October
17, 2023
Love for books and fear of the disappearance
of the reading culture in Badakhshan motivated 25-year-old Giti Farah to
establish a library in this province at her expense and the selfless assistance
of her sister, Uranus.
Giti, a
medical graduate, embarked on a journey from Baharak district in Badakhshan to
the city of Faizabad, the province’s capital, one day to purchase books.
Surprisingly, she discovered that the city had changed, and the bookstores and
libraries no longer had the same atmosphere. She had intended to buy books by
Chekhov, Emily Brontë, and Daphne du Maurier for her 15-year-old sister,
Arvanus, but she returned empty-handed.
The
Taliban had seized control of Afghanistan, leaving people worried about basic
needs like food and how to escape. This situation was challenging for Giti and
Farah, who both cherished books.
Giti
explains that their love for books and reading is unwavering. She reads books
for Uranus, and nothing is more important to them. Uranus lost her vision
entirely due to a rare disease as a child. Later, she went to university to
study medicine and find a way to restore her sister’s sight.
The lack
of access to medical facilities and the remote nature of the region where Giti
grew up caused Uranus to lose her vision. Now, the lack of access to a library
will not stop Giti. She shares her thoughts with her sister Uranus: “Uranus,
let’s open a library.”
Giti
says, “Nothing was the same when I went to Faizabad. There was no sign of the
people being cultured. This situation was destroying me, and I thought that
Badakhshan’s cultured and book-loving people had left. In the future, no one
will read books in Badakhshan, and the reading culture will eventually
disappear.”
The
arrival of the Taliban administration has plunged various segments of society
into absolute cultural, economic, and social stagnation. However, the
book-loving segment of society may have paid the heaviest price for recent
changes. Giti realized this absolute stagnation when she searched for books in
Faizabad: “I searched everywhere in the library, but I only saw religious
books, and there was no trace of novels or poetry, and I was deeply affected
and returned empty-handed.”
Giti’s
love and passion for books, her sister Uranus’s need for books, and the fear of
the reading culture disappearing in Badakhshan are the reasons that prompted
Giti to think. She finally shared what had occupied her mind with her sister:
“We were sitting under a chair, telling stories. I told her, ‘Uranus, let’s
build a library together, transfer all the books from our house to the library,
and buy the books we need from Kabul.'”
This
initiative by Giti, especially during a time when the Taliban administration
had deprived women of work and education, was not just a noble endeavour; it
was a lifeline for her sister, Uranus. She stood by her sister and did
everything she could to ensure that Giti didn’t feel alone and could continue
establishing the library.
With the
help of her sister, Giti founded the library and named it “Uranus.” She aimed
to make good books accessible to everyone, revitalize the culture of reading,
and ensure that both sisters had access to quality books.
In
Giti’s belief, the people of Badakhshan are cultured individuals, and political
changes have not affected the residents’ attitudes towards books and culture.
She refers to this library as a cultural refuge and states that “Uranus
Library” is the only shining beacon for intellectuals in the city in the
current circumstances.
Intellectuals
gather in this library, and if someone is looking for good books in Badakhshan,
Uranus is the place to go. The younger sister also can read Braille. Part of
this library is intended for the visually impaired, and Uranus will teach them
Braille reading.
In the
corner of the Uranus Library is a wall called the “Gallery,” where paintings by
a girl named Diba and photographs by a girl named Sharzad are displayed. These
young girls have nowhere to sell their paintings and photos, and Uranus Library
has provided a platform for showcasing their work.
Fifteen-year-old
Uranus, after whom the library is named, is content. According to Uranus,
reading and engaging with books have empowered her, her sister, and their
family to face life’s challenges. This library continues to bring joy to many
girls, girls who have been deprived of books, reading, poetry, writing, and
education.

Iran
Jails Mahsa Amini Lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, Whose Death Triggered Anti-Hijab
Protests: Report
Oct 17,
2023
Iran has
sentenced the lawyer of Mahsa Amini, the Iranian Kurd whose death triggered
widespread protests in 2022, to one year in prison for "propaganda"
against the state, local media reported on Tuesday.
"My
client Saleh Nikbakht has unfortunately been condemned to the maximum penalty,
one year in prison, for propaganda activity against the system," his
lawyer Ali Rezai, was quoted as saying by the Ham Mihan newspaper website.
We're
now on WhatsApp. Click to join.
Nikbakht
was the lawyer for the parents of Amini, 22, who died in custody on September
16, 2022, after being arrested by the morality police who accused her of
violating the strict dress code imposed on women in the Islamic republic.
At the
end of August, Rezai announced that a trial had begun in Tehran against his
client for "having spoken to foreign and local media about the Mahsa Amini
case".
Nikbakht
had indicated at the end of September 2022 that the Amini family had filed a
complaint against the police officers who arrested her.
Originally
from Iranian Kurdistan, Nikbakht has represented numerous Iranian personalities
throughout his lengthy career. Among them is the film-maker Jafar Panahi, who
was released on bail in February after around seven months in prison.
"It
is surprising that they have imposed the maximum sentence on MrNikbakht, who is
73 years old," Rezai said, before expressing hope that the verdict would
be "overturned in the upcoming proceedings".
Nikbakht
is not presently in custody, pending the appeal's outcome.
Hundreds
of people, including security force members, were killed during the protests
sparked by Amini's death, with thousands of demonstrators also arrested.
The
authorities at the time accused the protesters of participating in
"riots" incited by the West.

New
Delhi : The CBI on Monday filed a charge sheet against six people and a
juvenile in connection with two tribal women being paraded naked in Manipur’s
Kangpokpi district in May this year.
A video
of the incident, which surfaced in July this year, led to widespread
condemnation across the country and globally, prompting the Supreme Court to
step in and hand over the case to the CBI.
The
agency filed the charge sheet against six people and a report against a child

It was
alleged that, on May 4, a mob of approximately 900 1000 individuals, armed with

further alleged that two family members of one of the women paraded naked were
also killed in the incident.
The CBI
investigation indicated that the accused arrested by Manipur Police were
involved in the incident, following which the charge sheet was filed on Monday.
Further
investigation is continuing including the identification of other accused
involved in the offences beside other aspects of the case.
The
accused have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code,

Mufti condemns attack on Gaza hospital
18-10-2023
PDP
president Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday condemned the attack on a hospital in Gaza
which killed at least 500 people. Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry blamed an
Israeli airstrike for the explosion, but Israel said the blast was caused by a
misfired Palestinian rocket.
Sharing
a video report on Tuesday's explosion in Al-Ahli hospital on X, Mehbooba urged
the ''powers that be'' to not be ''mute bystanders''.
“The US
and other countries are watching as mute spectators. If it continues as such,
then peace in the world peace will be affected, because you are pushing the
people to the wall,” she said. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said
it is time that the Palestine issue is resolved.
