Teens Get a Taste of Dubai Night Club Culture
Dubai teen clubs go all out to woo wannabe adults for a fun night out

Dubai: It’s 7:30pm on a Thursday night. As I push open a very heavy door, Maroon 5’s One More Night blares into my ears. Even as I am tempted to try some moves, a group of gorgeous girls shaking their legs on a disco-lit dance floor steals my attention.
Dressed in party wear in frocks and gowns and dancing their hearts out, they look every bit gorgeous! At one end of the room a bunch of boys sip a drink and soon one of them decides to join the girls on the dance floor.
If they didn’t look so young, if it wasn’t so early in the evening and if they weren’t sipping non-alcoholic drinks, I would think I was in another happening night club. But this is Club West, a teenage club at Grand Midwest Hotel serving only mocktails and giving these ‘wannabe adults’ a sense of freedom they may be secretly yearning for.
“It’s my daughter’s 13th birthday and I thought this was the best way to ring in her teens,” gushes Rania Salib as she points to her daughter and friends who were busy setting fire to the dance floor.
“We want to give them the feeling of being an adult,” says Westleigh Flynn, General Manager, Grand Midwest Hotel.
Bringing his expertise of running teenage night clubs in Ireland, Flynn shows his clear understanding of what ticks young adults -- 3D projectors, 10 X Box 360, 10 PlayStation 3, a mixing desk, a 10,000 watt sound system, 60-inch plasma TV, amongst others.
“The teens need to look presentable, but also maintain certain manners. Once they get a stamp at the door, they can book their own tables and order mocktails and non-alcoholic champagnes. Music plays on, but if you want an in-house DJ, it comes with an additional charge. We’ll soon start a FIFA competition where up to 40 people can play against each other in the club itself. We want these youngsters to get an adult feel -– but under strict supervision.”
Over 30 CCTV cameras run throughout the club ensuring that the teens are visible at all times.
Charges at Club West are between Dh50 and Dh100 per head, inclusive of one drink.
As the youngsters run to the bar for their mocktails -– we make a dash to Club Rush at Atlantis The Palm where soft romantic Bollywood music greets us.
“We recognise the importance of treating teenagers as young adults. In fact, an entire part of the Atlantis is transformed into a haven for them to socialise,” says Katy Edkins-Jooste, Manager, Kid’s Club and Resort Operations, Atlantis The Palm.
At Club Rush, it’s a strict no kids, no adults environment, which means it’s a place for teeny boppers to hang-out all by themselves. A latest number from Bollywood movie Student of the Year gets teens holding hands and dancing.
“We keep parents away as we want teenagers to enjoy their freedom and make informed choices. Here they watch movies on the big screen, grab a snack or smoothie from the bar, make use of the latest games and consoles, stay connected in the internet lounge or listen to the latest tunes while dancing the night away,” says Edkins-Jooste.
Charges at Club Rush are Dh25 per head and the teens can choose a time slot in the day between 2pm and 6pm or in the evening from 7pm until midnight. “We also have three-day passes for Dh100, five day passes for Dh200 and 10 day passes for Dh400,” says Edkins-Jooste, adding, “The parents come for a tour, sign in their wards and make the payment. The teens are held responsible for the charges they incur while at Club Rush. The parents are not required to sign any approval for the teens to join in the activities.”
The Club is fully supervised. “There is a certified team to give first aid. Trained counsellors ensure teens are accounted for at all times and they have fun and are safe,” she said.

Indian Govt. Expresses Concern After Indian Woman Refused Abortion in Ireland Dies

NEW DELHI: Expressing "concern" over the circumstances in which an Indian woman dentist died in Ireland, India on Thursday said it is awaiting the results of two probes ordered by Irish authorities in the matter and will "take it from there."
"We deeply regret the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar. The death of an India national in such circumstances is a matter of concern. Our embassy in Dublin is following the matter closely," official spokesperson in the ministry of external affairs, Syed Akbaruddin said.
Akbaruddin said the MEA has also conveyed its sympathies to the family of the deceased.
Halappanavar, 31, died in Ireland due to blood poisoning after doctors allegedly refused to terminate her 17-week-long pregnancy, telling her that "this is a Catholic country".
Akbaruddin also said, "We understand that the Irish authorities have initiated two inquiries. We are awaiting the results of these inquiries and we will take it from there."
Savita's husband Praveen Halappanavar, an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, told Irish media that his wife asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated.
This was refused, he said, because the fetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, "this is a Catholic country".
The dead fetus was later removed and Savita was taken to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit, where she died of septicaemia on October 28.

1m Pregnant Women in Pakistan to Get Special Biscuits for Healthy Child

LAHORE: The Mother and Child Health Week, starting in the provincial capital on November 19 and elsewhere in the Punjab on 15th, will see some one million pregnant women being given TT-I, TT-II doses, folic acid tablets and special energy biscuits, top government advisers said on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference held to appraise the media persons about the health week, Provincial Coordinator of National Programme for Family Planning and Primary Health Dr Akhtar Rashid Malik apprised the media persons that some 49,000 lady health workers and 5,000 community workers would participate in the Mother and Child Health Week. Moreover, lady health workers will visit rural as well as suburban areas of the province and will convey door-to-door health message to the household women.
Special Assistant to Chief Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq said that the Punjab government is taking concrete steps to reduce maternal mortality rate to achieve the millennium development goal (MDG) and to solve the mother and child health related problems. He said that after dengue the next target of the government was to improve Routine Immunisation Programme and to minimise the mortality rate in new-born babies and pregnant women.
Dr Malik further said that anti-worm tablets would be distributed among seven million children of two to five years of age. The lady health workers will personally give these tables to the children to ensure proper growth of the children. Similarly, 0.6 million “missing” children who have remained deprived of the opportunity to get jabs would be administered preventive injections. Dr Rashid further said that the theme of the week is “Prevention against Pneumonia” and the injections of newly-introduced pneumococcal vaccine by the Punjab government in EPI programme would also be administered to the newly-born.

Chef Sisters Attract Crowd at Sharjah Book Fair

Sharjah: Chefs Sam Clark and sister Rose Prince held an exclusive session on south Mediterranean food as a part of the cookery programme at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), where they cooked a dish and told the audience about their calling.
The sisters made a dish from Sam’s restaurant made of spiced lamb with aubergine, pomegranates and mint, and explained that their career paths were set for them since childhood as most of their family members enjoyed and perfected different styles of cooking.
“My mother was a good cook, who took a great interest in food and was self-taught, and my grandmother lived in France and absorbed that country’s love of food,” said Rose adding that all her brothers can also cook well.
Between Sam’s sout-eastern Mediterranean style and Rose’s British-country style, the sisters enjoy working together in the kitchen. Sam’s husband who is also a chef is set to join his wife in tomorrow’s 11am session at the SIBF. They will also talk about their three cook books Moro: The Cookbook, Casa Moro, and Moro East.

Indian Cross-Dresser Arrested In UAE Women-Only Park

(CNN) -- Police arrested an Indian man for "violating public decency" and breaching modesty laws after he dressed in traditional Arab women's clothing and slipped into a women-only park in Sharjah, one of the United Arab Emirates.
It was not clear if the man's moustache might have been a weak point in his disguise.
Officers arrested the man Friday after multiple complaints from visitors saying they spotted a man walking around the park in women's clothing.

Malala will visit UAE to thank supporters: Report

Malala Yousafzai will visit the UAE in February to thank her supporters, said Pakistani Ambassador to UAE Jamil Khan on Wednesday night, as reported by Gulf News. She will then travel to Makkah to perform Umra.
Khan gave a speech at the Pakistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi expressing his support for Malala and stressed the importance of women empowerment in Pakistan.
Malala, a 15-year-old child rights activist, was shot in the head by the Taliban on her way back home from school for speaking against them. She survived the attack and is currently recuperating at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
“The message of peace resonates from personalities like Malala who become institutions,” Khan was quoted as saying. He further described Malala as a “star” and a “source of inspiration”.

Saudi speaker at Arab Women Leadership Forum

DUBAI: On the third Arab Women Leadership Forum, Saudi Arabian corporate expert Abdullah Al-Abdulgader will be one of the speakers. The two-day event began yesterday at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai.
Al-Abdulgader is founding executive director of the GCC Board Directors Institute (GCC BDi) in the Kingdom. He teaches, researches and consults at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in the area of Management Information Systems. He also is an adviser at the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education and a board member of Gulf International Bank.
The forum aims to attract women who actively participate in private and public sector organizations. It wants to help Emirati women pursue an aggressive growth agenda that positively impacts the UAE economy, and that of the overall Gulf region.
Dubai Women Establishment organizes the event. It is a statutory body of the Government of Dubai as per its founding decree, which encourages and facilitates the active participation of Emirati women in the economy and society.

Modest Dresses of Muslim Women on Show

A day-long event that focused on exhibition, lecture and souq to demonstrate how to live modestly and protect women’s modesty was held on Monday at the Jamiat Al Islah in Al Qusais.
More than 40 countries from across the world exhibited their national costumes, including modern but modest dresses of Muslim women in 27 Islamic countries, during the event.
The display of the dresses carried with them sayings about modesty, which was the theme of the event.

African Union Commission to support women’s empowerment

The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is on a working visit to Paris, France, this November to attend the 50th anniversary of the Pan African Women's Organisation (PAWO), to be held at the UNESCO Headquarters.
This is Dr Dlamini Zuma's first official engagement to Europe since her assumption of office as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on October 15, this year.
A press release from the Media center says her trip signals AUC’s support to PAWO. It also signals the Chairperson’s commitment to gender equality, “not only as a human rights issue, but also as a resource that we must develop by prioritising investment in the education and health of women and girl children”, said Dr. Dlamini Zuma.

Another Indonesian raped in Malaysia

An Indonesian maid has allegedly been raped by her employer in Seramban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa revealed on Tuesday.
The incident took place two days after allegations of a shocking rape of an Indonesian migrant worker in Penang by three Malaysian police officers.
“We just heard today that another Indonesian citizen has been raped. This time, by her employer,” Marty said.
The Acehnese maid was reportedly raped on Nov. 5 by her employer and assaulted by the employer’s wife. However, the Malaysian police only informed the ministry of the case on Monday night.

Indonesian Fashion Designers Turn Eyes to The Wider World

Jakarta. Indonesian fashion designers paired clean, urban styles with traditional batiks and designs inspired by ancient temples at the sixth annual Jakarta Fashion Week.
Local designers in Asia's fourth largest economy looked to the past and their heritage to gain a foothold in the international fashion market, a hope expressed in the week's theme "Indonesia Today, The World Tomorrow."
"This collection sums up 40 years of my work," said Josephine Komara, who is also known as Obin, a noted batik artisan who showcased eclectic designs with radiant silks.
Although Obin has shops in Singapore and Japan, she is most successful in her own country. There are other success stories like hers but Indonesia lacks a brand with global recognition, unlike its Southeast Asian neighbors such as the Malaysian Vincci and Singapore's Charles & Keith.

School guard fired for slapping Female student, 16

TANGERANG: A security guard at the State Aviation Polytechnic (STPI) in Curug, Tangerang, has been dismissed for slapping a female student on Tuesday.
STPI principal Henny Heliyani said that the guard, Syafrudin, 40, had received three warnings for disciplinary violations since he started working in May.
“What he did today, hitting a female student on the face, will be his last at this school,” Henny said.
