There is a
huge need for reformation, and this is true for married men and women alike.
Women must likewise adopt the required reforms. The teachings of the Qur'an and
the Sunnah instruct men to fulfil the full rights of women, but they also
instruct women to respect the rights of their husbands. If a couple wants to
have a good and happy marriage, both men and women must fulfil their
responsibilities.
However,
there is a lot of discussion about women's rights and privileges in today's
culture, which is fair, but on the flip side, the reformation of women is
getting less and less attention, which starts to brew resentment in marital
relationships. It's not necessary for males to take the majority of the
responsibility for mistakes made in marital life; women can also share some of
the blame. However, they are so devoid of consciousness that they are oblivious
to their errors.
In this
brief post, we'll discuss a particular issue that ladies should consider. Kufran-e-Asheer,
the name of this unique subject, literally translates as "ungratefulness
towards husband's favour."
Islam views
ungratefulness toward the husband as a sinful deed. For this reason, the
Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasised and was quite adamant about reforming
it. According to the Holy Hadith,
Narrated
Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I was shown the
Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were
ungrateful." It was asked, "Do they disbelieve in Allah?" (or
are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, "They are ungrateful to their
husbands and are ungrateful for the favours and the good (charitable deeds)
done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then
she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, 'I have never
received any good from you." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 2, Hadith 22)
The Arabic
word ‘Asheer’ literally means ‘A person associated with another’ or ‘Someone
you study with or live with’. But in the aforementioned Hadith, Asheer means a
husband who lives with his wife. Kufran means ungratefulness. So Kufran-e-Asheer
means ungratefulness towards the husband.
Mufti
Sharif al-Haq has written in the commentary of Sahih al-Bukhari that “the real
meaning of Kufr is to hide but here it means ‘to hide kindness and favour’
that is, to be ingratitude. It is known from this hadith that ungratefulness is
a major sin. It has been proved that recognizing benevolence is obligatory.
(Nuzhat ul Qari, Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, under the mentioned hadith)
In the
aforementioned hadith, ungratefulness towards the husband is called Kufr.
Here, Kufr does not mean disbelief on the basis of which a person is out
of faith. There are many degrees of Iman (faith), just as there are various
degrees of disbelief (Kufr). When someone believes in Allah, His
Messengers, His Prophets, His Angels, His Books, Hashr and Nashr, the
Afterlife, etc., they are said to be believers. However, it is stated in the
hadith that such a person has perfected his religion, that is, his faith has
become strong when that believer acts good deeds alongside his faith. However,
according to various Ahadith, a believer's faith strengthens and is perfected
when he performs good deeds alongside his faith (Iman).
There are
various degrees of disbelief, too. The most extreme kind of disbelieving is
when a person disbelieves in Allah, His Messengers, His Prophets, His Angels,
His Books, Hashr and Nashr, the afterlife, etc. They are referred to as
disbelievers. Kufr is also used to refer to sins in addition to this.
Sometimes the term "Kufr" refers to a grave sin that is
extremely displeasing to Allah.
For
instance, it has been stated in a hadith that abusing Muslims is a great sin
and engaging in combat with them is Kufr; hence, this statement does not
imply that the person engaging in combat will eventually turn into a
disbeliever or infidel, but rather that the combatant is a grave sinner.
Fighting with a believer was traditionally considered an act of infidels; hence
it became their symbol and was labelled as Kufr. However, a believer is
not made a disbeliever by this act.
So it was
established that a kind of Kufr is something that makes someone a
disbeliever, and a type of Kufr is something that makes someone a great
sinner rather than a disbeliever. In the Hadith under discussion, Kufran-e-Asheer
is referred to as Kufr, meaning "ungratefulness towards
husbands," which is a serious sin that Allah (SWT) detests and advises to
repent of and abstain from immediately, failing which one would have to endure
severe torture in Hell.
This
discussion showed that Kufr can have different meanings and degrees,
including ingratitude. If a woman becomes ingratitude to her husband for his
favours, she will not be referred to as an unbeliever or an infidel, but rather
as having committed a grievous sin.
Regarding
the hadith of Kufran-e-Asheer, there are two schools of thought: one
holds that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was shown all the women up until the
Day of Judgment, while the other holds that only the women who lived during the
Prophet's (peace be upon him) lifetime were shown in hell. While it is true
that not all women fall under either category, the message in both is the same:
the majority of women will suffer in hell as a result of their ungratefulness
towards their husbands. Furthermore, not all women are ungrateful, as is well
known. Those who have a terrible tendency of being unappreciative and
ungrateful must therefore start by changing themselves when the opportunity
presents itself. This hadith conveys a message of reformation and successful
marital life.
