Muslim
Woman, Tahira Bano, Attacked by Her Community Members for Writing Pro-BJP
Slogans on Walls in Rajasthan

A
disturbing case of attempted lynching has come to light from Rajasthan’s Jaipur
city. A woman belonging to the Muslim community was attacked by a mob of her
co-religionists, mostly men, over some slogans she painted on the walls of her
house.
Scared,
the woman, identified as Tahira Bano, tried to lock herself inside her house,
but the mob dragged her out. They pinned her to the ground and beat her up.
Thankfully, she was reportedly saved after a policewoman intervened and
shielded her.
A video
of the incident went viral on the internet yesterday.
The
incident took place ten days ago.
Dainik
Bhaskar quoted police constable Dholi Bai, who reportedly saved the victim, as
saying that the woman is a resident of Kalyan Nagar. When the Malpura police
received information that a crowd of 100-150 people were trying to attack a
lone woman, they reached the spot.
At the
spot, some people were seen trying to break open the gate by climbing to the
roof. They managed to open it, and dragged the woman out. The colony was
waterlogged after rains. The police managed to save her from the mob, and
reached her to a hospital for treatment.
Police
told the media that the woman is mentally unstable.
A case
was registered at the Malpura Gate police station of Jaipur City (old) on July
20 by the woman's husband Sahadat Ali.
Swarajya
accessed the FIR. The statement recorded in the FIR says that around 11 30 am
on 20 July, a mob of about 200-300 people gathered at his house and started
raising slogans that said, "Take her out of the house, we will kill
her".
The mob
broke into the house after breaking the lock, and dragged her out. They beat
her up and tore her clothes. The attackers included Nasir, Rashid, Arif, Irfan,
Ikram, Deshwali, Ejaz, Kalam and Shanu, among others.
Based on
this statement, the police booked the seven men under IPC sections 143
(unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),
452 (house trespass), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 354 (assaulting a woman
using criminal force).
Police
have arrested seven out of the nine men identified in the FIR, as per
Organiser.
Navbharat
Times reported that the slogan was in favour of the BJP, accompanied by the
lotus symbol of the party. The report says that the woman is a vocal BJP
supporter and would praise the party in her interactions with neighbours. For
this reason, her neighboursharboured a grudge against her.
It's not
the first such incident where a person from the Muslim community has had to
face the ire of co-religionists for being vocal supporter of the BJP.
In Uttar
Pradesh's Aligarh district, a woman named Gulistana accused her landlord, who
was from her religion, of forcing her to vacate her rented house for joining
the BJP.
In
another district of UP, Bareilly, a woman named Uzma accused her husband and
in-laws of evicting her from her marital house after she revealed to them that
she had voted for the BJP in state assembly elections.
A man
named Shakeel Ahmad from Kanpur city of UP accused his neighbours of beating
him up for voting for the BJP in the same elections.
In one
of the most disturbing cases of this nature, after a man named Babar Ali was murdered
by a group from his religious community, his family said that the trigger was
his celebration of BJP's victory in state elections. The incident took place
last year in Kanpur city of UP.

Arab-Muslim
Woman Accuses Israel’s El Al Airlines of Discrimination
To
win support for inclusion in the visa-waiver program, Israeli officials in
early July declared that US citizens, regardless of background, would be
allowed to travel through Israeli ports of entry open to tourists (AFP)

August
01, 2023
CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS: An Arab-Muslim woman filed a complaint Monday against El Al, the
national airline of Israel, alleging she was prevented from boarding a flight
on July 18, 2023, and subjected to invasive screening by officials because of
her ethnic background and faith.
Noor
Wazwaz, an American citizen and journalist, said she was attempting to board
the El Al plane in Newark to visit relatives in the West Bank when El Al
Israeli security agents and American TSA, or Transportation Security
Administration, officials put her through a special screening process that
included an extensive body pat-down and removal of clothing.
She was
subsequently barred from the flight when they alleged her laptop tested
positive for “explosives.”
An
official of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee called the
accusation of “explosives” ludicrous, asserting the claim is often used to
block Palestinian Americans from traveling to visit families and friends in the
occupied territories.
“It is unconscionable that a US citizen would be
subject to such treatment, let alone having it happen here in the US. There is
no justification for the treatment she faced, and we demand an immediate
investigation into all of El Al’s policies,” said Abed Ayoub, the ADC’s
national president, in a statement.
“There is no room for airlines who create
different rules and procedures for passengers of different racial, religious,
and ethnic backgrounds. There is no justification of allowing Israeli security
personnel to target our community members at American airports. The treatment
Ms. Wazwaz faced has been historically faced by US citizens of Palestinian,
Arab, and Muslim backgrounds while flying El Al and continues until today.”
Ayoub
stated that Wazwaz managed to book a different flight but was then detained for
a long period by Israeli security at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv when she
arrived days later. Wazwaz charged that Israeli security also deleted documents
that were on her cellphone, which went through extensive security examination.
Although Israeli security asserted the laptop tested positive for
“explosives,” Ayoub stated that they did not do any additional testing or
screening and also denied Wazwaz an opportunity to challenge the claims.
“Among the demands made of Ms. Wazwaz (by
Israeli officials) was an accounting of every contact in her phone that had a
Palestinian or Israeli country code,” Ayoub stated.
“When Ms. Wazwaz’s ordeal finally ended and she
arrived at her destination, she discovered that her bags had clearly been
searched and ransacked though no note was placed indicating such a search.”
The ADC complaint is embarrassing for Israel which has been lobbying to
win special privileges under the US’ Visa Waiver Program, which would allow
Israelis to travel to the US with minimal security requirements.
To win support for inclusion in the visa-waiver program, Israeli
officials in early July declared that US citizens, regardless of background,
would be allowed to travel through Israeli ports of entry open to tourists.
That assertion prompted America’s Department of Homeland Security to
release a statement on July 19, 2023, further strengthening support for
visa-waiver approval.
“DHS
welcomes these steps by Israel toward meeting the Visa Waiver Program
requirements. The United States will engage with the Government of Israel on
its implementation of its new travel policies. For entry into the Visa Waiver
Program, all of the Program’s mandatory requirements must be satisfied. The Department
is working closely with the Government of Israel in its efforts to meet those
requirements, in furtherance of our shared goal that Israel join the Visa
Waiver Program.”
Historically, Americans of Arab heritage have been singled out by Israel
for special scrutiny and physical searches before being allowed to board El Al
planes in New York, and also when they arrive at Ben Gurion Airport.

US
delegation presses Taliban at Doha meeting on women’s rights
August
01, 2023
WASHINGTON:
US officials denounced the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan
— particularly for women and girls — during a meeting with Afghan Taliban
representatives in Doha, the State Department said Monday.
The
American delegation also expressed “deep concern” regarding the humanitarian
crisis and the need to continue supporting aid organizations and UN bodies
delivering assistance, a State Department statement said.
The
closed-door meeting was one of the highest-level known gatherings of US and
Afghan government officials in months, with the Washington team headed by
Special Representative Thomas West and Kabul’s by Foreign Minister Amir Khan
Muttaqi.
The US
statement did not, however, identify the Afghan representatives — describing
them only as “senior” and as “technocratic professionals.”
A
separate Afghan foreign ministry statement issued late Monday did name Muttaqi,
and said his team included finance ministry and central bank representatives.
It noted
human rights were discussed, without elaborating, and said the meeting
underscored discussions between the sides on ending banking restrictions and
sanctions.
Women’s
rights have been a sticking point in negotiations over aid and recognition
since the Taliban swept back to power in August 2021.
The
Taliban government has barred girls and women from high schools and
universities, banned them from parks, funfairs and gyms, and ordered them to
cover up in public.
Rina
Amiri, the US Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights, who
attended the meeting, said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as
Twitter, that she had been urged to “directly engage the Taliban.”
“We
called for the removal of restrictions on women & girls, including access
to education & work; release of detainees; & end to corporal
punishment, & crackdowns on media & freedom of expression,” she wrote.
The
Afghan statement said Kabul “emphasized once again that to build trust, it is
important to remove blacklists and release the bank reserves so Afghans can
develop their economy without foreign aid.”
The
State Department said it would be open to “a technical dialogue regarding
economic stabilization issues soon.”
The
Afghan foreign ministry said the delegation also reiterated calls to restore
consular services for its nationals globally.
A
handful of Afghan embassies are operating under Taliban authority — including
in Pakistan, Turkiye and China — but many are occupied by diplomats associated
with the previous government which is still, officially, represented at the
United Nations.
The
State Department statement said it acknowledged Kabul’s “continuing commitment”
not to allow Afghanistan to be used as a platform for attacks on the United
States and its allies, noting “a decrease in large-scale terrorist attacks
against Afghan civilians.”
It also
said it recognized a “significant decrease in cultivation” of poppies this
growing season.
Since
taking over, Taliban authorities have banned cultivation of the crop, which is
used to make opium.

PM Modi
Asks NDA MPs To Reach Out to Muslim Women on Raksha Bandhan
Nisha
Anand
Aug 02,
2023
Asserting
that his government's decision to ban triple talaq has boosted overall sense of
security for Muslim women, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked BJP leaders
to reach out to them during the upcoming festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Sources
said Modi made the remarks at a meeting of BJP-led NDA MPs from West Bengal,
Odisha and Jharkhand on Monday night in which he and other senior BJP leaders
highlighted various development initiatives of the central government for
different sections of society as the alliance gears up for the 2024 Lok Sabha
elections.
Some MPs
present in the meeting said Modi emphasised the need to connect with every
section of society and then noted his government's decision to ban the practice
of instant divorce among Muslim men. The government has criminalised the
practice.
He said
this decision has been a big boost for Muslim women, some MPs present in the
meeting said, adding that the prime minister asked them to organiseprogrammes
during Raksha Bandhan to reach out to women from the minority community.
Rakshan
Bandhan festival - a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters -
will fall on August 30 this year.
The
Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was passed by Parliament
in 2019, declaring the practice of instant triple talaq illegal and a crime
that could attract a jail term for the husband.
Modi has
often highlighted his government's reform measures for Muslim women.
In his
recent 'Mann ki Baat' address, he noted that over 4,000 Muslim women performing
Haj this year without 'mehram' was a "huge transformation" and
asserted that more and more people were getting the chance to go for the annual
pilgrimage with the changes made by his government in the Haj policy over the
past few years.
'Takes
note of I.N.D.I.A alliance'
In his
speech to the MPs, he noted that opposition parties are making efforts to join
their forces under a new name INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive
Alliance) as their earlier moniker UPA was tainted with a slew of scams. People
will never accept it, he said.
The BJP
has divided NDA MPs region-wise into clusters of nearly 40 members and Modi is
expected to speak to them separately during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament.
The
first two meetings were held on Monday. He had also addressed a meeting of
about 45 NDA MPs from the western part of Uttar Pradesh up to the
Kanpur-Bundelkhand region.
Addressing
the meeting of Uttar Pradesh MPs, he said the ruling alliance has been serving
society and the country and receiving people's blessings.
Modi
asked MPs to go to the masses with a positive message about the government's
work and advised them to spend maximum time reaching out to people.
The
opposition alliance might have changed its name from UPA to INDIA but it will
not be able to wash off its "sins of corruption and misgovernance,"
he had said.
