MUMBAI: This Janmashtami, Dahi handi events in Jogeshwari will witness something a trifle out of the ordinary. Three Muslim girls—Zara Manihar, 14, her 17-year-old sister Rani, and Shifa Sheikh (20) are set to be part of the dizzy multi-tier human pyramids formed to reach the traditional pot of curd strung up at a height.

The city’s Dahi Handi Mandals have this year taken a proactive stand to promote communal harmony and sisterhood. The lady coaches of the Muslim girls emphasise that dahihandi is a cultural sport that transcends religious boundaries, and add that their aim is to spread the festive spirit by including people from all faiths.

“The first thing we asked the Manihar siblings was if they had permission from their parents to participate,” said HarshaliRane, coach of the Jogeshwari Mata Mahila Govinda Pathak comprising 80 to 100 members with a support team. “They told us that they take great pride in observing our (Maharashtrian) culture. Also, dahihandi is a sport and there should be no religion involved in sports. They were in agreement with our core philosophy and hence joined our team. They are also allowed by their families to wear shorts, the most comfortable gear for climbing.”

Residents of Aarey Colony in Jogeshwari, the duo’s mother said this was the first year they were participating. “The children expressed an interest in participating,” she told HT. “We cannot stop them. Let them fulfil their wish. Their school friends are also participating so we allowed them. As parents we can’t dampen their enthusiasm.”

Rane said that during Eid, the entire team would be invited to the Manihar siblings’ home to partake of sheer korma. On Janmashtami, the team will go to Thane in the mornings to break handis, followed by a grand finale of breaking handis on their home turf at Anand Nagar in Jogeshwari East.

Shifa Sheikh (20) from Shastri Nagar in Vile Parle is another dahihandi player. “She has been playing kabbadi and is a powerlifter at the national level,” said Geeta Zhaghade, secretary of the Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti and president of Parle Sports Club. “She has an important position in our team and plays a crucial role. She enjoys this more than other girls because she gets to dance and play here.” Zhaghade added that the team celebrated all festivals together, whether it was Bakri Eid or Diwali.

Shifa told HT that her mother encouraged her to participate in every sport. “Sport has no caste or religion,” she said. “I have been an athlete, played kabbadi and now dahihandi. There is unity and equality among us all—neither religion nor caste nor class divides us. That’s how a six-tier pyramid stands—on the foundation of unity. We are attempting a seven-tier pyramid this year.”

Shivaji Khairnar, social worker, dahihandi coordinating committee member and Pro Govinda championship referee, believes that dahihandi is a means to inculcate team spirit and unity. “Women participants have to face many challenges, juggle household chores and jobs and practise from 9 pm to 12 am,” he said. “But they have also been trained in self-defence by the mandals and go home safely in groups.”

Khairnar said that in these polarised times where a religious and ideological divide prevails on social media, his committee wanted to send out a strong message on unity in diversity through this cultural sport. “We want to use all festivals in Jogeshwari as a means to end religious chasms,” he said.

Maryam Rajavi, Dissident Politician: Nothing Has Changed In The Iranian Government And Leadership Of The Mullahs

AUGUST 22, 2024

 Press Release

•       Regarding his new cabinet, Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, said what he wasn’t supposed to and admitted that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei personally selects and approves the ministers and that everything is done in co-ordination with the “security organizations, the IRGC, the intelligence organization and all those with whom we have to reach an agreement”. Pezeshkian had initially stated that he joined the administration because he saw the regime in danger and that his agenda was to implement Khamenei’s policies.

•       But the Iranian people’s agenda is to dismantle Khamenei’s apparatus and the entire regime of Velayat-e Faqih (religious rule).

•       124 executions in the last month alone speak volumes about the state of the regime and its new president.

In the midst of a new wave of executions, Iran’s new president, stressing his and his ministers’ loyalty to the Velayat-e Faqih, made a desperate appeal to the Majlis (Iran’s parliament) to approve his cabinet in order to tackle the ongoing crises. He warned that without such approval: “I doubt if we can get out of these crises.”

Pezeshkian, in his bid to win the approval of the regime’s warring factions in this power struggle, was forced to lift the veil and expose Khamenei’s hand, saying: “Why do you make me say things I shouldn’t?” He added: “We did nothing without co-ordination, whether with the lower committees or at the top [with Khamenei], with those we had to coordinate with… We agreed with all those we had to agree with, including the security organisations, the IRGC, the intelligence organisation, and all those we had to agree with”.

Pezeshkian admitted, for example, that Khamenei’s telephone order appointed the minister of culture, and that the only woman introduced as minister of roads and urban development in that cabinet was chosen because, as he put it, “it was the Leader himself who said she should be appointed”. Similarly, “Araghchi, the foreign minister, was the first minister approved by him (Khamenei). Even before the list of ministers was discussed, he approved him.

Maryam Rajavi (pictured), president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, noted that all this clearly shows that the new mullahs’ government, like previous governments, is merely a tool in the hands of Khamenei and the IRGC. It shows no deviation from the main policies of the regime, especially in terms of repression, plunder, nuclear projects, terrorism and foreign warmongering. Not surprisingly, Pezeshkian today addressed the regime’s parliament about himself and his ministers: “Believe us, it’s not as if someone would come in opposition to Velayat (Khamenei) and I would compromise with them.” He even vowed: “By God, we are determined to achieve the vision set by the Supreme Leader.”

Muslim Women for Harris pulls support after Palestinian speaker allegedly denied DNC slot

August 23rd 2024

CHICAGO (TND) — A group of female Muslim voters on Wednesday announced an end to its support for the Harris-Walz campaign after the Democratic National Convention allegedly denied a request for a Palestinian-American to speak at the convention.

Abbas Alawieh, a Michigan delegate who co-founded the association of uncommitted voters known as the Uncommitted National Movement, announced the alleged denial. The "uncommitted" movement was sparked by dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war, and it has followed Vice President Kamala Harris into her campaign.

Alawieh said in a video posted on X that the Democratic Party denied the group’s offer for a Palestinian-American to take the stage at the convention.

Muslim Women for Harris-Walz wrote in a statement it can’t in good conscience keep campaigning for the Democratic ticket due to Alawieh’s allegation.

Palestinians have the right to speak about Palestine,” the statement reads. “We pray that the DNC and VP Harris’ team makes the right decision before this campaign is over. For the sake of each of us.”

The parents of an American-Israeli man taken hostage by Hamas expressed support for a ceasefire in a speech at the convention Wednesday night, adding that releasing all hostages in the war in Gaza is a humanitarian issue.

"In an inflamed Middle East, we know the one thing that can most immediately release pressure and bring calm to the entire region: a deal that brings this diverse group of 109 hostages home and ends the suffering of the innocent civilians in Gaza,” Jon Polin, the father of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, said.

Muslim Women for Harris-Walz argued the parents showed more empathy toward Palestinians than Harris or the Democratic Party.

“This is a terrible message to send to Democrats,” the group wrote.

The Uncommitted National Movement claimed it provided the Democratic Party a list of Palestinian-Americans who could speak at the convention. It criticized the party’s alleged refusal on X.

“Excluding a Palestinian speaker betrays the party’s commitment in our platform to valuing Israelis and Palestinian lives equally,” the association wrote. “Vice President Harris must unite this party with a vision that fights for everyone, including Palestinians.”

Neither the Democratic National Committee nor the Harris campaign immediately returned The National Desk’s request for comment.
