GENEVA: A fact-finding mission mandated by the United Nations said on Monday the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran’s morality police was unlawful and caused by violence and that Iranian women still suffer systematic discrimination.

The death of 22-year-old Amini, a Kurdish Iranian woman, in September 2022 while in custody for allegedly flouting Iran’s Islamic dress code unleashed months of protests and the biggest challenge to the Islamic Republic’s clerical leaders in decades.

“Our investigation established that her death was unlawful and caused by physical violence in the custody of state authorities,” Sara Hossain, chairperson of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The fact-finding mission found the protests that followed were marked by extra-judicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture and ill-treatment, as well as rape and sexual violence.

“These acts were conducted in the context of a widespread and systematic attack against women and girls, and other persons expressing support for human rights,” Hossain said.

“Some of these serious violations of human rights thus rose to the level of crimes against humanity.”

In response, Kazem Gharib Abadi, secretary general of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, accused the fact-finding mission of a “glaring lack of independence and impartiality”.

In separate comments to the Human Rights Council, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, said jailed human rights defender Narges Mohammadi “suffers from severe health issues, including serious heart and lung conditions, placing her health at great risk”.

“She was denied medical access because she did not have the mandatory hijab,” Hossain said about Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year.

Hossain said that since the protests began in 2022, women and girls in Iran were confronted daily by discrimination “affecting virtually all aspects of their private and public lives”.

She said it was “hard to fathom” that women’s access to schools, universities, hospitals and courts as well as employment opportunities “should be subjected to a wholly arbitrary requirement of wearing the mandatory hijab”.

Shazia, An Agriculturalist,  Trains Over 3,000 Afghan Women In Agriculture: UN

The United Nations Coordination Office for Humanitarian Assistance in Afghanistan has recounted the story of a woman who works as an agricultural trainer in the country, having trained over 3,000 other women in farm sectors so far.

According to the UNOCHA report, Shazia started as an agricultural trainer five years ago, teaching women various aspects of poultry farming, including chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys.

In addition to poultry farming, Shazia is skilled in land preparation, planting, and fertilization.

According to UNOCHA, Shazia inherited her interest in agriculture from her father and has trained over 3,000 women in various provinces.

Shazia advocates for global community collaboration in the agricultural sector.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced earlier this year that it had assisted 13,000 women in agriculture in Afghanistan.

UN relief agencies have been assisting numerous single women in Afghanistan in the agricultural and livestock sectors for several years.

The dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan continues to escalate, exacerbating the suffering of millions of vulnerable civilians.

Despite the urgent need for assistance, humanitarian organizations operating in Afghanistan face a critical funding shortfall.

This shortage severely limits their ability to provide life-saving aid and support to those most in need. As a result, many vulnerable individuals, including women and children, are left without access to vital resources and assistance, further deepening the humanitarian crisis in the country.

Sheikha Bodour, Chairperson Of The Sharjah Investment, Opens 'Chapters Of Islamic Art’

March 19, 2024

Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), has inaugurated the “Chapters of Islamic Art: Carpets” exhibition, at House of Wisdom (HoW) in Sharjah.

The 3-month exhibition, inspired by a section of “Chapters of Islamic Art: The Private Collection of Dr Richard Ettinghausen,” which was generously donated to HoW by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, highlights the cultural and historic significance of artisan carpets and textiles across the Muslim world.

Fatma Al Mahmoud, HoW’s Cultural Planning Manager, toured Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, along with Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of Shurooq; Mohamed Juma Al Musharrkh, CEO of Invest in Sharjah; and Reem bin Karam, Director General of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, through the 4-zone exhibition, which featured physical copies and digitised versions of books and manuscripts on Islamic carpets, a display of masterfully crafted rugs, and fascinating artwork inspired by the classic "Alshanof" motif with modern twist.

Bodour-Carpet-Exhibiton Sheikha Bodour during her visit to the exhibition at House of Wisdom.

House of Wisdom's expansive lobby has been ingeniously transformed into an exhibition space, where visitors are first greeted by the Ettinghausen Book Collection on Carpets. This curated exhibition showcases a stunning array of illuminated manuscripts and large-sized books on Islamic art in textiles, meticulously selected from Dr Richard Ettinghausen's private library.

Ranging from the uniquely weaved carpets of Mesopotamia (Iraq - Abbasid Period) to the intricate designs of Persian rugs, the SEHNA technique of Punjab, and the indelible Oriental carpets, each artwork tells a story of its people, landscape, and history, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of the Muslim world.

Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of House of Wisdom, said, "Our primary objectives for this event are to honour the intricate beauty of Islamic art, facilitate cultural dialogue, and provide a platform for both local and international artists to showcase their impressive and creative artwork. We are proud to house Dr Richard Ettinghausen’s priceless collection at HoW, and we look forward to highlighting a different section of the works during the holy month of Ramadan and beyond, providing a compelling experience for visitors.”

The second zone of the exhibition is the fruit of a collaboration between HoW and Jaipur Rugs, an Indian company renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and dedication to social responsibility.

Their retail display features Jaipur Rugs' diverse collections, including a curated selection of vintage and antique carpets.

Zone 3 showcases contemporary UAE-based artists.

Central to this zone is the inclusion of the Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI), a pioneering project founded with the noble aim of empowering underprivileged communities with a strong focus on women.

While Zone 4 of the exhibition is dedicated to encouraging artist-community engagement, it celebrates HoW’s efforts to support local and emerging talents.

Here, HoW has collaborated with the young contemporary artist and designer, Sarah Al Khayyal, to display her art installation called “Where the Grid Lies.”

Through this artwork, Sarah emphasises the importance of the grid structure, honouring the enduring tradition of “Sadu” craftsmen.

Through the future iterations of this exhibition, HoW intends to annually shed light on additional chapters of Islamic art embedded in the Ettinghausen collection, including Islamic architecture, travel literature, and ceramics.

The House of Wisdom was designed as a cultural hub that offers various means of learning that shifts the centre of focus towards people, interactions, and experiences.

From the open spaces to the wide variety of programmes and events, it is creating a hub for cultures, ideas, and interests to interact in infinite possible ways, creating with it new opportunities for innovation, creativity, education, and entertainment.

19 March 2024

A'bidah Zaid Shirbeeni

Lifestyle brand dUCk is introducing its latest Raya collection, "The Nisa dUCk". The collection is inspired by the spirit of Nisa, which means 'woman' in Arabic, and is a tribute to the multifaceted beauty and empowerment of women around the world.

According to a release, dUCk realises how Islam puts women on a pedestal, protects and even asks for gifts to be given to them.

Through "The Nisa dUCk", the brand aims to champion the first Muslim woman, Saidatina Khadijah RA, who was a successful businesswoman and devoted wife to Prophet Muhammad SAW.

"The Nisa dUCk" collection features scarves, ready-to-wear and bags. Its designs are inspired by the borders of The Quran and the scarves are named after female icons in Islam.

"The Nisa dUCk" collection will be released in three drops, each on different dates: 14 March, 19 March and 25 March. This, according to the brand, offers customers the opportunity to explore the collection in stages and anticipate new arrivals.

To complement the launch of the new collection, dUCk has curated a series of marketing activations focusing on fostering connection, spiritual growth and celebrate.

One such activation includes a dUCk Ramadan staycation at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Kuala Lumpur happening from 29 to 31 March.

It will feature International Islamic speaker Sheikh Wael Ibrahim who will offer attendees a unique opportunity to engage in insightful workshops and sessions aimed at deepening spiritual understanding and communal bonds.

In tandem, the "dUCk& Friends Raya" event is set to make its debut in Singapore at WismaGeylangSerai on 23 and 24 March. The event promises a festive showcase of the dUCk Raya 2024 collection alongside a curated selection of Singaporean and Malaysian brands in a bazaar.

Other participating brands include NelissaHilman, Ben &Chinta, Machino and GULA. The two-day event aims to bring together the vibrant communities of Singapore in a festive celebration of fashion, culture and camaraderie.

On top of that, dUCk will also be presenting "Sahur Bites", a daily one-minute Instagram series hosted by religious teacher LiyanaMusfirah. The series aims to provide reflections and discussions on Ramadan.

dUCk will also be partnering with key Klang Valley Malls to sponsor an array of dUCk prayer wear in each of the malls' prayer rooms throughout Ramadan for public use.

These Ramadan collections and activations come after the brand's Barbie collection. The lifestyle brand collaborated with the Barbie movie to produce a line of fashion items.

It was also the first collaboration a local brand has done with Barbie in the country, according to a statement by the company at the time.

Commenting on the collaboration last year, VivyYusof, co-founder of dUCk group said:

“Beyond a collection of cool, fashionable items, the movie’s storyline of Barbie going out [into] the real world resonates with our customers and dUCkies. The journey of overcoming fear, finding strength in hardship, and moving on with courage and confidence speak of the values dUCk [holds] on to, and we hope to share that positivity and support with our customers,” Yusof added.
