Riyadh: Layan Al-Qurashi has made Saudi sporting history by becoming the first female weightlifter to win a medal at Asian competition level.

The athlete took bronzes in the 81 kg category of the snatch and jerk events at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships, being held in Delhi.

Amazon workers who wear hijabs for religious reasons at the company’s facility in Brooklyn Park now have a company-branded option.

Henna and Hijabs partnered with Amazon to launch Amazon-branded hijabs for workers at the SMN1 facility in Brooklyn Park. The launch was held Wednesday, when Hilal Ibrahim, Henna and Hijabs’ founder, greeted workers wearing the new product.

“Henna and Hijabs is committed to bridging the accessibility gap that Muslim women often encounter in different spaces,” Hilal said.

SMN1 will be the first Amazon facility to use the branded hijabs, but soon other facilities will also give workers the opportunity to wear one.

Ryan Mohamad, an Amazon worker at SMN1, was one of a half-dozen workers showing off her new hijab after the official unveiling was finished. Ryan said it was nice to see her and others’ efforts materialize.

“I can’t really express how happy and excited I am in words,” Ryan said.

The Amazon logo hijab was the result of a process that started 18 months ago when Amazon workers in Brooklyn Park expressed their desire to have apparel options that met both cultural and religious needs, according to a site leader at SMN1.

Saabir Shabdi, an operations manager at SMN1 who oversees various employees at the Brooklyn Park facility, said he’s seen excitement on their faces when they learned Amazon was doing something special for them.

Hilal said her company prides itself on trendsetting and bridging accessibility gaps for Muslim women. The company has products sold at Nordstrom and made medical-grade hijabs for health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We aspire for this partnership to foster a sense of inclusion and belonging amongst the members. What an incredibly humbling honor to be able to fill this need,” Hilal said.

Malaysian Dy PM’s Daughter, Nurulhidayah, Laments Umno Being Inherited by Rude Leaders

17 Aug 2023

PETALING JAYA – Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid has always been supportive of her father, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, particularly through her Instagram posts.

The Wanita Umno executive councillor yesterday lamented how leaders would come and go but Umno would be inherited by those who are rude and have no manners.

On Instagram, she shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation in which someone had said: “If you meet Zahid and Lim Guan Eng (former finance minister), spit on Zahid first, then only on Guan Eng.”

The remark was given a thumbs up by another participant in the group chat. However, their names and numbers were covered.

“I hide your names so you will not be humiliated, just like Allah is testing us which Insya-Allah we can go through.

“May whatever move you make not affect your children and your future generations,” she said.

A few days ago, in the wake of Umno walking away from the recently concluded six state elections with only 19 seats, Nurulhidayah shared a post on her Instagram written by one “Jusoh Gobek”.

Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) remained relevant in the six-state elections following the cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH). On its own, BN, which entered the elections without the participation of its coalition partners MCA and MIC, contested in 108 seats but only won 19.

The general sentiment was that Zahid had to step down as Umno president.

Jusoh Gobek had written that politics was a game of perception. The writer used Zahid as an example, claiming that those he met who hated the Bagan Datuk MP could not provide a clear answer on why.

“The most they can say is because Zahid has court cases. When they say that, I say Mahiaddin (former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) too has court cases. Many other leaders are embroiled in court cases,” the writer said in the post shared by Nurulhidayah.

At this point, they would grow quiet and have nothing else to counter, the writer remarked.

In conclusion, the writer said he believed many were hating without valid reasons and were merely following others.

“DS Zahid Hamidi, just like DS Najib Razak (Datuk Seri Najib Razak), are victims of psychological warfare and political propaganda. That is the reality,” he said. – The Vibes, August 17, 2023

With 15 days remaining until the nomination door closes on 31st August for the seventh edition, in which the award winners will be announced in a huge ceremony on 15th November, the Academy continues to receive nomination files from the UAE and various Arab nations for the 11 categories. The Fatima bint Mubarak Women Sports Award has earned its reputation as the most important and largest for women’s sports in the Arab region.

Since its inception, the award, organised by the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, has embodied the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, to enhance the status of Arab sportswomen at both local and international levels.

The award, whose total financial prizes amount to AED 1.8 million in its seventh edition, is receiving applications for nominations across 11 categories from the Emirates and various Arab countries at both the individual and collective levels (categories of sports federations and institutions). The individual level awards include: Best Arab Women Athlete, Best Emirati Women Athlete, Best Youth Athlete, Best Paralympic Athlete, Best Female/ Male Coach, Best Sports Media, and a new category introduced in the seventh edition, which is Best Sports Mother.

At the level of sports federations and institutions, the categories are: Best Youth Development Program, Best Team, and the Best Sports Creative Initiative. The Academy also grants a special award to reward the Arab Sports Personality of the Year, an honour bestowed by the jury on an Arab personality for her outstanding performance and contributions in the field of Arab women's sports.

Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said, "The Fatima bint Mubarak Women Sports Award came to embody the directives and interest of the Mother of the Nation in empowering Emirati and Arab women in the field of sports, and what the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy is doing is a product of the continuous dedication of the wise leadership to upgrading the role of women as essential partners in building society and its development in various fields.”

He added, "Women's sports in the Arab world have become unique, especially since Arab women are present in various world championships, not only at the local or regional level. There have been many achievements in international forums, with an emphasis on the presence of Arab women as an authentic partner in the success equation, and a tributary of Emirati and Arab sports achievement.”

Mariam Al Mansoori, representative of the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy, clarified the criteria and conditions for nominations, saying, "The General Secretariat of the Award was keen to encourage an easy application process for candidacy, allowing male and female athletes, individuals and institutions from any Arab country, who meet the respective criteria and conditions, to submit files through the website. This made the registration process easier and faster, according to the nomination mechanisms and in easy and simple steps.”

Al Mansoori indicated that the period of application for the award’s seventh edition runs from July 2022 to 31st August, 2023. Winners of the award from previous sessions can also apply for a nomination in the new edition, provided that they achieved qualifying accomplishments within the time period mentioned.

It is worth noting that the sixth edition, which was held in September of last year, witnessed the crowning of many Arab champions in various categories, with the Egyptian Giana Farouk winning Best Arab Sportswoman, Shamma Youssef Al Kalbani winning Best Emirati Sportswoman, Gouda from Egypt earning Best Emerging Athlete, Egyptian Rehab Radwan securing the Best Paralympic Athlete award, Fares Al Assaf winning Best Coach, and Moroccan Aziza Night Si Bha bagging the Best Sports Journalist award.
