women set fire to hijab in support of Iranian protesters.
------------
Kozhikode:
A group of Muslim ladies set hijabs on fire in front of Kozhikode town hall.
The 50-woman women's rights organisation burned the hijab while raising slogans
in solidarity with the Iranian demonstrators against it.
The
hijab was set ablaze at the conclusion of the free-thinking session held by the
Islamic Free Thinkers Association at the Kozhikode Town Hall.
When
MahsaAmini, 22, died while being imprisoned by Iran's morality police after
being detained for wearing her hijab inappropriately, protests erupted, and
security forces there have killed hundreds of people in order to suppress these
protests.
Following
her death, Iran had a wave of protests, with many women rushing to the streets
to express their outrage.
Many
women, including schoolgirls, burned their hijabs in support of the victims,
while women all across the world cut their hair in protest. Following her
passing, protests erupted in countless locations around the country.
However,
this is for the first time that the women in India and a group in Kerala at
that has come out in such open support of the Iranian protesters.
MahsaAmini,
22, was jailed by Tehran's "morality police" for disobeying the
nation's mandated hijab rules.
Amini
had not adequately covered her hair with the hijab while she was in Tehran, as
per the morality police.
She
was assaulted in the police car while she was being sent to a prison facility
for a "re-education program" after being arrested by the police for
disobeying the country's mandatory head covering.

Yemeni
female prisoner attempts suicide to escape Houthi mistreatment

----------
AL-MUKALLA:
A Yemeni woman has attempted suicide inside a Houthi-held jail in Sanaa after
being exposed to “severe” physical and psychological maltreatment by her
captors, a Yemeni human rights activist told Arab News on Sunday, an incident
that has once again brought attention to the inhumane conditions in Houthi detention
facilities.
Amat
Al-Salam Al-Hajj, chairperson of the Abductees’ Mothers Association, an
umbrella group representing thousands of female family members of civilian war
captives, said that a female prisoner tried to kill herself last week by
cutting the arteries of her hands in order to escape abusive and torturous
treatment from Houthi captors inside the Central Prison in Sanaa.
Other
female prisoners saved their bleeding roommate by transporting her to a medical
facility.
Al-Hajj
said that after families of the detainees visited the Central Prison in Sanaa,
the news of the woman’s suicide attempt became widely known.
“There
is much violence inside Houthi prisons, which has prompted some prisoners to
attempt suicide more than once,” she said, adding that her organization has
documented similar suicide attempts by inmates due to harsh treatment by Houthi
policewomen known as Zaynabiat, primarily from a notorious female Houthi captor
known as Um Al-Karar.
Al-Hajj
said that Entesar Al-Hammadi, a Yemeni model and actress whom the Houthis
abducted from a Sanaa street early last year, also tried to commit suicide as a
result of the mistreatment she endured at the hands of Um Al-Karar and other
female Houthi kidnappers.
Since
the Houthis took over areas of Yemen with force in late 2014, hundreds of
civilians have been kidnapped, forcibly disappeared and mercilessly tortured by
the militia.
Meanwhile,
Reporters Without Borders have urged the Houthis to promptly free a young
Yemeni journalist named Younis Abdel Salam, who was kidnapped by the militia in
Sanaa in 2021, stressing that his health has worsened and that he is in need of
emergency medical attention.
“His
arbitrary detention for more than a year has impacted his mental health and
well-being. He needs urgent medical attention and, most importantly, he needs
to be freed. We urgently call on the Houthis to release him,” Jonathan Dagher,
head of RSF’s Middle East desk.
The
journalist’s family told the international media watchdog that the 28-year-old
has dropped nearly half of his body weight, his mental state has gotten worse,
and the Houthis have denied him access to his medicine and even forbidden
visitors from bringing him books.
“The
last time I saw Younis, he was mentally devastated,” his brother, Sultan, told
RSF.

On
Iran protests, Pope says fight for women's rights a 'continuous struggle',
condemns mutilation
Nov
07, 2022
Pope
Francis: Pope Francis at the weekly general audience.(Reuters)
----------
Pope
Francis said on Sunday the fight for women's rights was a "continuous
struggle", and condemned male chauvinism as deadly for humanity and female
genital mutilation as a crime that must be stopped.
Speaking
to reporters on the plane returning from a four-day trip to predominantly
Muslim Bahrain, he also praised women he has appointed to managerial jobs in
the Vatican, saying they had improved things there.
He
made no mention of campaigns to let women move on beyond that and become clergy
- the pope and his predecessors have said the question of women priests is
closed.
Francis
was responding to a question about women protesting in Iran but turned to the
topic of women's rights in general.
"We
have to tell the truth. The struggle for women's rights is a continuing
struggle," he said, listing historic struggles such as the fight for the
right to vote.
"We
have to continue struggling for this because women are a gift. God did not
create man and then give him a lapdog to play with. He created both equal, man
and woman," he said.
"A
society that is not capable of (allowing women to have greater roles) does not
move forward," he added.
Francis
denounced male chauvinism, acknowledging there was still too much of it around
the world, including in his native Argentina. "This chauvinism kills
humanity," he said.
He
also condemned as a "criminal act" female genital mutilation (FGM),
repeating a major call he made in February on the U.N. International Day of
Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
According
to the United Nations, FGM is concentrated in about 30 countries in Africa and
the Middle East but is also practiced by immigrant populations elsewhere. More
than four million girls are at risk of undergoing FGM this year, the U.N. says.
He
spoke of women he has appointed to managerial roles in the Vatican, mentioning
by name Sister RaffaellaPetrini, a nun who as the deputy governor of Vatican
City is effectively the most powerful woman there.
"I
have noticed that every time a woman is given a position (of responsibility) in
the Vatican, things improve," he said.
He
also cited the impact of five women he appointed to a department that oversees
Vatican finances.
"This
is a revolution (in the Vatican) because women know how the find the right way
to go forward," he said.
Francis
also has appointed women as deputy foreign minister, director of the Vatican
Museums, deputy head of the Vatican Press Office, as well as four women as
councillors to the Synod of Bishops, which prepares major meetings.
The
Church teaches that only men can become priests because Jesus chose men as his
apostles.

AMU
female students allege discrimination for wearing burqa, niqab
5th
November 2022
Aligarh
Muslim University Creative by Minhaj Adnan/ Siasat.com
-----------
A
recent incident of what students are referring to as “internal Islamophobia” in
the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) a number of Muslim female students have
alleged discrimination by the administration based on their attire.
A
video clip from a mess in AMU, shows a warden saying that she would “remove the
burqas from the faces of the girls and feed them (food) through their nose” is
doing rounds on the internet.
According
to sources from AMU, niqab-clad girls had reportedly asked the warden to let
them take their food in their rooms as they couldn’t abide by their niqab if
they would eat in the mess given that there were male residents serving food.
The warden allegedly replied in an offensive tone.
In
AMU, a ‘Hall’ represents a collection of hostels in a single-walled territory.
There are around 16-20 halls and each hall has one or more hostels. Each hall
has a provost and each hostel has a warden. The recent incident happened in
Abdullah hall, which is a hall with six girls’ hostels and according to
students, none of them have female staff members.
A
student from AMU told Siasat.com, “They don’t allow us to take food to the
rooms even in our own plates. There are girls who observe complete purda
(Islamic covering from head to toe) and it is not possible for them to eat in
front of male staff members.” The student who chose to remain unnamed added
that this has been happening for the last two months despite several
complaints.
Another
student told Siasat.com that the administration misbehaved with her several
times, and had made Islamophobic and sexist remarks against her. She reportedly
went to meet officials to file a complaint and was yet again allegedly greeted
with misbehaviour and Islamophobic remarks.
She
further stated that the Abdullah Hall administration has the most “misogynist,
Islamophobic and ill-mannered” woman as a warden she has ever seen in her life.
“Every issue of the hostel, be it allotment, food, hygiene or anything is
countered by an Islamophobic remark on burqa, purdah and namaz.”
Another
source said that illegal students are allegedly residing in another hostel and
that is being used as an excuse for the warden’s “misbehaviour” in this case.
The
student said that it started when a few students, in charge of food, accused
others of stealing from the mess and had the administration call for male
students from the main campus. The male students have reportedly not been sent
back since then.
Students
are taken aback by the alleged stance of the administration given that AMU is a
minority institution.
The
teacher shouting in the video is reportedly the warden of MumtazJahan hostel.
“Whatever
she said was very offensive to us, and now those students are being called
again and again to the provost’s office. They are being unnecessarily dragged
into fake issues and are being falsely maligned. A warden of another hostel
called my friend scary as she was wearing a jilbab(a type of fashionable burqa)
yesterday,” the student who chose to remain unnamed stated.
After
the warden denied to talk to this reporter, Siasat.com reached out to the
provost of the
Siasat.com
reached out to GhazalaNaheed from the department of Zoology, Women’s college,
and the provost of Abdullah hall to ask about the incident. Commenting on the
incident, she said “Facts are being distorted and presented. No such incident
has happened. We have a very favourable and friendly environment. We can’t
allow students to take food to their rooms as it is unhygienic and leftover
food will lead to the spreading of diseases in hostel rooms.”
She
said that it is a policy that students cannot take food to their hostel rooms
and they cannot change the rules in any case. GhazalaNaheed denied that the
warden made any sort of offensive remarks against the students.

AIMPLB
says Kerala HC order giving Muslim women right to end marriage is
“unacceptable”

Lucknow:
The Kerala high court's ruling earlier this week that a Muslim woman has the
ability to dissolve her nikah (marriage) independently and does not necessarily
need her husband's permission has been challenged by the All-India Muslim
Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), TOI reported.
The
HC in this specific case "instead tried to legislate over the same, which
was unacceptable to the board," according to AIMPLB general secretary
Maulana Khalid SaifullahRehmani in a statement. According to Rehmani, there are
just four 'talaq' (divorce) choices in Islam.
The
first is triple talaq, in which the husband has the authority to declare
divorce. The second is ‘khula’, in which the wife typically initiates the
divorce and it becomes final once the husband consents. The third is
‘talaq-e-tafweez' (delegated divorce), in which the future wife specifies in
the ‘nikahnama’ (marriage contract) that she will be permitted to get a talaq
without her husband's approval in the event that he abuses her inhumanely
and/or tortures her physically and/or mentally. According to Rehmani, the
qazi/court will hear the fourth option.
There
is no alternative way for talaq to be explained in the Sharia, and the Kerala
High Court has gone beyond its mandate in interpreting the divorce laws in the
context of Islamic law, Rehmani stated.
The
AIMPLB's response follows the High Court's denial of a husband's review
petition challenging the divorce his wife received under the Dissolution of
Muslim Marriages Act, 1939.
The
right of a Muslim wife to end the marriage was upheld by a division bench of
Justices AMuhamedMustaque and CD Dias, who ruled that this was in conformity
with the Quran and could not be impacted by her husband's decision to accept or
reject the move.
The
petitioner-husband had argued that while a Muslim woman had the right to
request a divorce, she did not possess the same absolute authority to say
"khula" as her counterpart did to pronounce "talaq."

Calls for Establishment of A Muslim Women World Network
November

Hojat-ol-Islam
Seyed Mohammad NabiMousavifard said it is necessary to protect the rights of
Muslims in all Islamic countries.
A
working group should bet set up to pursue the establishment of such a network,
the cleric added.
Referring
to the recent riots in Iran, he said the enemy hatched plots to make the issue
of women a central theme in the unrest.
“We
should not allow secularism and the Western model for women’s life to become
materialized (in the country),” he stated.
Hojat-ol-Islam
Mousavifard also called on security apparatuses to decisively confront those
who have insulted the sanctities during the unrest.
Leader
of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has described the recent
sparse riots in Iran as part of the enemy’s passive and amateurish plot in
response to the great Iranian nation’s progress and major initiatives.
Ayatollah
Khamenei said enmities toward Iran will continue in various forms as long as
the people of Iran take up the flag of Islam and accompany the Islamic
Republic. “The only solution is to stand firm,” he stressed.

Pillar of Islamic Republic’s Power: Official

Addressing
a gathering in the southern city of Bushehr on Saturday, Brigadier General
AbolfazlShekarchi added that the men in the country are creating power thanks
to the presence of heroic women.
He
added that the freedom given to women by the Islamic Republic is unique in the
world.
“You
(the world arrogance) define freedom as animal freedom” and certainly the
Islamic Iran would not accept such a thing, Shekarchi stated.
He
said while the enemies view women as a commodity and a means for advertisement,
the Islamic Republic gave value to women.
According
to the official, the Iranian Muslim woman has always been at the forefront of
fighting the global arrogance both before and after the victory of the 1979
Islamic Revolution.
He
emphasized that the Iranian people’s reliance is on their faith and on Islamic

Jordanian
Woman Using Virtual Reality to Educate People about Islam
November
06, 2022
"We've
been producers and filmmakers for over 10 years but we never thought that we
will go into entertainment until we were in Disney," Bayazid told Anadolu
Agency.
Bayazid
is co-owner of LightArt Media Productions and Light Art VR, a company she
describes as “for Islamic entertaining virtual reality experiences.”
The
idea for VR films about Islamic culture came when she and her husband were
visiting the theme park. “We were having so much fun,” she said.
“Why
don't we have as Muslims, anything fun like this?” she wondered.
“What
if we can tell our stories and our heritage? And the Islamic history in a super
entertaining way, using cutting edge technology, we develop our software,” she
said.
Bayazid
said her company has "achieved the goal of entertaining and still
educating people.”
The
company produces films in eight languages, has four VR films about Islamic
heritage, and is producing a fifth and sixth within the next year.
The
33-year-old was in Istanbul to attend a two-day conference hosted by the Women
and Democracy Association (KADEM), an Istanbul-based women's advocacy group,
together with Turkey’s Family and Social Services Ministry.
The
theme of the fifth International Women and Justice Summit was "Cultural
codes and women".
“I'm
here to talk about the image of women and the presentation of women in the
media,” Bayazid said on the sidelines of the summit.
“I've
worked in this industry for over 12 years and living in the US I see how the
way women, specifically Muslim women, are being represented in the media
directly affects how we are being treated and this sometimes causes
Islamophobia,” she added.
Telling
our story
Bayazid
cited the importance of “telling our stories as a Muslim producer and
filmmaker” and said she will be talking about the importance of telling the
stories of Muslim characters.
Along
with her husband Muhammad, Bayazid founded Light Art VR five years ago. “We
decided that we want to produce entertainment for Muslim audiences around the
world,” she said.
They
started producing a Virtual Reality computer-generated company to show 8k
resolution films “that take you back in time 1,400 years ago, to witness the
story of Islam,” she said.
The
director based in Washington also discussed reactions from audiences. “So, we
have completed two different reactions because we have our Muslim audience and
non-Muslim ones.”
Muslim
audiences, she said, were “screaming, laughing, crying,” when they watch the
company’s films.
Non-Muslim
audiences had similar reactions but were surprised to learn facts about Muslim
culture they did not know until watching the film.
“We
did our project in New York just to share our Islamic culture," she said.
"They loved it and they said 'we didn't know all this information because
it's very informative.”
“For
example, they thought that Islam is a religion of violence. They told us that
before watching our VR experiences they thought that women are second-class
citizens in Islam and they are controlled by men,” she said.
“It's
one of the reasons to educate people and to tell them about our Islamic
heritage and culture, to tell our own story and on our narrative,” said
Bayazid. “Because we're not going let other people tell our story the way they
want. It's our job to tell it the right way.”

Women
managers have improved Vatican more than men: Pope
6
Nov 2022
Pope
Francis said on Sunday that women he has appointed in the Vatican have proved
they can be better managers than men and that there was too much male
chauvinism in the Roman Catholic Church and society at large.
The
pope made his comments during an airborne news conference on the plane
returning to Rome from his four-day trip to Bahrain.
"I
have noticed that every time a woman is given a position (of responsibility) in
the Vatican, things improve," he said.
Francis
was asked about the women at the forefront of protests in Iran, but he did not
answer the question, pivoting to the topic of the role of women in general.
Speaking
of women he has appointed to managerial roles, he mentioned Sister RaffaellaPetrini,
the deputy governor of Vatican City, who is effectively the most powerful woman
in the Vatican, in charge of some 2,000 employees.
"Things
have changed for the better," he said, referring to the management skills
of Petrini, who was appointed last year.
He
also cited the impact of five women he appointed to a department that oversees
Vatican finances.
"This
is a revolution because women know how the find the right way to go
forward," he said.
Francis
condemned male chauvinism, acknowledging there was still too much of it around
the world, including in his native Argentina.
"Women
are a gift. God did not create man and then give him a puppy dog to play with.
He created man and woman," he said. "A society that is not capable of
(allowing women to have greater roles) does not move forward."
Francis
has also appointed women as deputy foreign minister, director of the Vatican
Museums, deputy head of the Vatican Press Office, as well as four women as
councillors to the Synod of Bishops, which prepares major meetings.

More men in forums on women’s issues urged
November
07, 2022
Sharjah:
NAMA Women Advancement (NAMA) recently held its second ‘Connect with Irtiqa’
roundtable at the House of Wisdom in Sharjah to promote gender parity.
Titled
‘Women in the Workplace: Setting a Roadmap for Gender Equality’, the session
welcomed over 50 attendees - high-level representatives from private companies,
government and semi-government personnel, as well as a group of influencers
including media personnel.
The
event featured a panel discussion to explore effective strategies for women’s
inclusion in the workplace. Moderated by Rima Farrage, Senior Producer and
Presenter at Forbes Middle East, the discussion was led by top private sector
executives, namely, CarlinaMarani, Managing Director Growth Markets, Accenture
Middle East; Nada Taryam, Managing Director, Civil and Architectural Projects,
Bee’ah; BedriyaAlsaeed, Employee Engagement Manager, MBC Group; and Paula
Newby, CEO, Predixa.
Recommendations
During
the interactive session, several insights on the opportunities for advancing
gender equality in the workplace were presented. The speakers delved into their
own experiences and shared a number of learnings and recommendations,
including: finding tangible solutions to shift the mark on the gender map;
increased male representation in panels and forums addressing women issues,
more self-awareness to uncovering biases; active listening to expand horizons
for multiple point of views; finding like-minded personalities for enhanced
discussions; researching and quantifying all available data; and, setting
strategies to conceive the changes of time.
ReemBinKaram,
director of NAMA, said: “According to the World Bank’s Women, Business and the
Law 2022 report, around 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded equal
economic opportunity. At NAMA Women Advancement, we believe we can make a
difference; we take meaningful action to bridge the gender divide that
continues to affect our workplaces and economies. And needless to say, this
cannot be achieved without support from the private sector, which occupies a
giant share of the global workforce and economy.”
She
added: “This is the reason why NAMA’s Itriqa initiative was launched in the
first place... Regional and global efforts must come together to drastically
address the systemic and underlying barriers that have been holding several
generations of women back from realising their true potential, including at
their places of work.”
Experts’
advice
During
the panel discussion, Paula Newby, CEO, Predixa said: “To become the needle of
change, aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment need to be
quantified with data, to showcase the improvements. Only then will you get the
support of the leadership who will help the momentum to continue.”
Sharing
her personal journey to nurturing a society of inclusion, Nada Taryam, Managing
Director, Civil and Architectural Projects, Bee’ah said: “I was fortunate
enough to receive support in the beginning of my career to progress and build
confidence to become the person I am today. It is this kind of support that
shifts the world to becoming a better place.”
BedriyaAlsaeed,
