Iran Executed Nearly 1,500 Since 2022 Mahsa Amini’s Death In Custody Began – Rights Group
'Physical violence' led to Mahsa Amini's death, UN report
-----
September 17, 2024
At least 1,425 people have been executed in Iran since Mahsa Amini’s death in custody sparked a nationwide protest movement in September 2022, a new report by Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization said.
Nearly twice as many executions were carried out in the two years following the outbreak of the protests compared to the same period before, according to the Monday report.
The most significant increase was for alleged drug-related crimes, the report added, for which capital punishment jumped 163% from 302 cases to 796.
“The death penalty is the Islamic Republic’s most crucial tool for instilling fear in society, aiming to stifle dissent and preventing future protests," IHR Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam was quoted as saying.
"Drug-related offenders, often denied fair trials by Revolutionary Courts, are the regime’s expendable victims in this relentless cycle of repression."
Iran conducted the most executions of any country in the world besides China last year, Amnesty International said in a report in May, adding that nearly 75% of all executions worldwide in 2023 outside China were in Iran.
Foreign ministers from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand condemned the uptick in death sentences in a joint statement on Monday.
“The recent surge in executions that have largely occurred without fair trials has been shocking, and we urge the Iranian government to cease its human rights violations now.”
Other harsh sentences like flogging have also been handed down in greater numbers according to another rights group.
Over 100 sentences of flogging have been issued in relation to the protests, the U.S.-based AbdorrahmanBoroumandCenter for Iran's Human Rights said in a report on Monday, with at least two being conducted on women.
"These inhumane sentences are being carried out despite Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - an agreement that Iran has both accepted and ratified -which states, 'No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment'," the rights group said in a statement.

We Stand with the Girls and Women of Afghanistan: Executive Director of the UN, Yasmine Sherif
16 Sep, 2024,
Education Cannot Wait Executive Director Yasmine Sherif statement ahead of the 3-year anniversary of ban on girls' secondary education in Afghanistan.
NEW YORK, Sept. 16, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, we stand with solemn hearts as the world marks this week the three-year ban on girls' secondary education in Afghanistan.
Today and every day, we must stand up for the millions of Afghan girls and women living under the yoke of gender-apartheid: systematized and institutionalized oppression, exclusion, and marginalization based exclusively on their gender. However, standing in solemnity for their suffering is not enough. We must act to remove the oppression and injustice. Against all odds, we must continue to deliver results to provide the girls access to an education well beyond grade sixth.
As a staunch champion for girls' human rights, not the least the most foundational right – their right to an inclusive and continued quality education – Education Cannot Wait and our strategic partners call out to the world through our #AfghanGirlsVoices advocacy campaign. Together and collectively, we have brought together artwork and calls to action by global leaders, and conveyed the inspiring stories of hope, courage and resilience straight from Afghan girls and young women refusing to succumb to oppression and refusing to give up on their right to an education.
The quotes from Afghan girls are heart-breaking, poetic and passionate. Some resound with hope: "Every beat of my heart resounds with a rhythm of hope, pushing me forward in my quest of education despite all odds." Others chart the abuse and fear that millions of girls face on a daily basis: "At just 14 years old, I became a bride, when I should have been in the ninth-grade learning and playing with my friends. Instead of holding a pencil, I held the weight of a marriage I never wanted." Others are defiant: "In the face of adversity, my dreams become my armour, shielding me from doubt and empowering me to forge ahead towards knowledge."
Celebrities, world leaders and passionate influencers continue to promote the #AfghanGirlsVoices campaign.
"The world must unite behind Afghan girls. Denying their right to education is a violation of the UN Charter, Convention on the Rights of the Child and basic human rights. Through the #AfghanGirlsVoices campaign, people everywhere can stand up for human rights and gender-justice by sharing their words of courage, hope and resilience," said The Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and Chair of ECW's High-Level Steering Group.
As Khaled Hosseini, best-selling author of The Kite Runner, puts it: "Today, some three years after Afghan girls were banned from secondary education, 80% of school-aged Afghan girls and woman are out of school. Many are forced into unwanted marriage. This is a catastrophe, because denying Afghan girls access to school not only violates their human right to education and jeopardizes their future, it jeopardizes the future of the homeland as well."
The pursuit of knowledge is a key tenant of Islam, and a key component in delivering on our universal promises of peace, equality and human rights. Education for all of Afghanistan's daughters is essential to rebuilding this long-suffering nation.
Today, we ask world leaders everywhere to join ECW and our global strategic partners in calling for an end to the ban on education and to take action. We call on you to fund the ongoing education initiatives at the local level defying this illegal and irrational ban. Second, we call on you to resolve the catastrophe for the girls of Afghanistan stemming from ignorance rather than enlightenment. Afghanistan deserves better and it is urgent.

CM MARYAM NAWAZ OPENS FREE 'HEART SURGERY PROGRAMME' FOR CHILDREN IN LAHORE
September 16, 2024
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially launched the "Chief Minister's Children's Heart Surgery Programme" for the free treatment and surgery of children with heart disease, during her visit to Lahore’s Children's Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Ward on Monday.
She also distributed "Child Surgery Cards" among the deserving patients under the Programme, according to state media, APP.
”The operation of a sick child will be done in a private hospital if there is no place in the government hospitals," she said after the announcement.
Moreover, she inspected the ward's High Dependency Unit (HDU) and other departments of the hospital and reviewed various facilities available in the cardiac surgery ward.
The Punjab CM inquired about the well-being of the young patients, gave them gifts and played ludo with them.
She interacted with the children and prayed: ”May Allah grant you health, we all pray for you.”
Additionally, she talked to the parents of the sick children and asked them about the availability of various facilities.
”It is my mission to free every citizen of Punjab, including children, from the system of queues and waiting," she said, adding: ”The number of specialist surgeons and allied staff will be increased to multiply the capacity of pediatric heart surgery in the government hospitals.”
Furthermore, the Punjab CM said: ”In the first phase, pediatric heart surgery facility is being provided in 6 government and designated private hospitals including PIC (Punjab Institute of Cardiology) and Children's Hospital Lahore, Multan's Children's and PIC, and Faisalabad and Rawalpindi Cardiology Institutes.”
She added: ”In the second phase, facilities for pediatric heart surgery will also be provided in the hospitals of Wazirabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and Sargodha.” She also observed the dashboard developed to monitor the programme.
CM Maryam also said: ”I am extremely happy to launch the project as a mother, not as the Chief Minister.”
”I can understand the shock that mothers go through on the death of a child," she added.
Maryam also visited the "play area" for children with heart diseases in the Children's Hospital, and reviewed various facilities available for them there.
She said: ”The provision of modern facilities for children's heart surgery is a sincere effort to wipe the tears of mothers and remove the diseases of young children.”
The hospital authorities informed the CM that "more than 5000 young children die every year due to a lack of timely heart surgery."
She said in Pakistan’s first treatment centre for children, young patients from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other provinces would also be treated. "Children suffering from heart disease will not have to wait for long," Maryam added.

Islamic Girls’ School Set to Open Below Self-Defence CentreIn UK’s Bury Town
16 SEP 2024
ByChris Gee
A 120-place independent girls’ school is set to be created in a space below a self-defence and fitness centre. Plans have been submitted in the past week to create the school in vacant former commercial space at Khizra House on Lord Street on the eastern fringe of Bury town centre.
A planning statement in support of the plans said ‘the proposed school will mean that girls can be educated in the heart of their local community’. The building used to be commercial premises but the ground floor has been vacant since 2017.
The upper floor is occupied by the Bury Defence Academy (BDA). It is described in the application as ‘a very popular and well-respected coaching centre for self defence and fitness’.
The application said the proposed school and the BDA will co-exist ‘harmoniously’ as BDA activities take place on the first floor during evenings and weekends while the school will operate during the day on week days. The application states: “The site is owned by the JamiraKhizra Mosque which is immediately adjacent to the east of the application site.
You can join it by clicking here: https://chat.whatsapp.com/IzXNzF8DrLmJ65aE4z5UzZ
“The application site comprises a rectangular two-storey brick-built building, with the main frontage on Lord Street and an enclosed open area to the rear which is partly used for car parking. The ground floor consists of a central corridor with two large rooms on either side of it and a number of smaller rooms towards each end. The interior is well-lit by natural lights from a series of large windows.
“The configuration lends itself to conversion to school use without significant internal or external alteration. The Bury Defence Academy (BDA) is a registered charity which provides self defence and fitness training and coaching across a range of age groups and is a valued local community asset.”
The application said two existing large rooms will provide classrooms that can be divided by folding doors to provide versatile and adaptable teaching spaces. Smaller rooms will be converted to create an office and reception, head teacher’s office, staff room, kitchen and toilets.
The outdoor area to the rear will provide parking 10 car parking spaces plus two new disabled spaces. The application, added: “The proposed development would provide a new independent Islamic high school for girls which would be an asset for the local community, with the social and economic benefits which would flow from high quality education provision in this location.
“This would be achieved without harm to residential amenity, highway safety or the environment.” Planners at Bury Council will now consider the plans with a decision expected later this year.

SheDrives: Pakistan's first ride-share service exclusively for women and the transgender community
ByAadrikaSominder
Sep 17, 2024
A new service by the name of SheDrives was launched in Lahore, Pakistan recently and the most interesting thing about it is that it exclusively serves transgender people and women. The aim of this app is to protect trans individuals from discrimination and harassment, according to Ammaz Farooqi, the company’s chief executive.
Currently operating only in Lahore, the service may expand to other cities in the future. With an estimated 30,000 transgender people in Lahore and around 500,000 across all of Pakistan, the need for safer transportation is significant in the country's largely conservative society where trans people often face marginalisation and even violence. The ride-sharing app is also targeted towards women who are wary of facing harassment while travelling alone on public buses and trains, especially when sharing space with male passengers. The cars will be marked with pink logos, and will be easily identifiable by the intended passengers.
“SheDrives is unique because both drivers and passengers are either women or transgender individuals. This is just a small step, and we hope to expand to other cities,” said Ammaz. This is one of the few strides Pakistan has recently taken in supporting its transgender population. In 2022, the government launched a hotline connecting trans individuals to police and the Ministry of Human Rights. The year before, the country opened its first government-run school for transgender students in Multan.
Additionally, a transgender rights bill was also drafted that would legally allow trans individuals to select their gender identity on government documents, educational certificates and national ID cards. However, the bill has faced opposition highlighting the ongoing challenges to securing full social recognition for transgender people in the country.

More African descent women risk ‘Triple Negative Breast Cancer’- Researcher
By Florence Afriyie Mensah
Kumasi Sept. 16, GNA-Collaborative research has proven that there are advanced patterns of breast cancer known as ‘Triple Negative Breast Cancer’, more aggressive than other types, and common among women from West Africa, as compared to European and American women. According to researchers, genetics played a key role in the higher rate of this deadly subtype of cancer, especially in Ghana and Nigeria. Professor Lisa Newman, a Professor of Surgery, and Executive Director of the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes (ICSBCS), who made this known, stated that in East Africa, there tended to be a lower rate of Triple triple-negative breast Cancer. Explaining this further, she said the trans-Atlantic slave trade brought the ancestors of contemporary Western sub-Saharan Africans across the oceans to America, adding that, contemporary Americans had a lot of shared ancestry with contemporary Western sub-Saharan Africans, including Ghanaians. However, many infectious diseases had different pidemiology in East Africa and research uncovered different genetic markers in East Africa, she disclosed. Prof. Newman speaking at the opening of ICSBCS 8 annual symposium and 20 anniversary celebration in Kumasi, called for increased efforts in raising awareness of breast cancer in Ghana, urging women to present symptoms of all forms early at facilities. The programme, which was put together by Weill Cornell Medicine and the KomfoAnkoye Teaching Hospital (KATH), brought together experts and researchers from across the globe. It was held on the theme “Improving Breast and Gynecological Cancer Management and Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.” Prof. Newman underscored the significance of studies and collaborative research in helping experts learn more about the genetics of the tumours to enhance better treatment. The mission of ICSBCS is, therefore, to reduce the global breast and gynaecological cancer burden through advanced research and delivery of care to diverse populations worldwide. n Ghana, breast cancer makes up 31 per cent of cancer incidences. It has been estimated that there will be over 22 million new cases of cancer and 12.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide by 2030. Tragically, more than half of the new cases and two-thirds of cancer deaths would occur in low and middle-income countries, where access to early accuratediagnosis and quality care are woefully inadequae. Dr. Ishmael Kyei, General and Breast Surgeon at the Directorate of Surgery, KATH, mentioned that medical professionals had developed new techniques to be able to use a woman’s own body fats and muscles to create new breasts to avoid mastectomy. He asserted that the body image women had when they developed breast cancer was being addressed to make them more confident.
