A
case of alleged infidelity involving an Indonesian musician is gripping the
nation after his wife spilled everything that almost led to the dissolution of
their marriage.
InaraRusli
(30), who married singer-songwriter VirgounTambunan (36) in 2014, recently
uploaded a series of Instagram stories in which she shared that she had grown
tired of her husband’s serial infidelity amid suspicions that he wanted her to
agree to a polygamous marriage.
“This
time I am exhausted because I had given him so many chances. But I ended up
being manipulated,” Inara wrote.
Inara,
herself formerly a member of the girl group Bexxa, alleged that the former Last
Child frontman has a particularly special relationship with a woman, identified
by her initials TAA, since 2021. After she found out about Inara in August 2022,
she made Virgoun sign a letter containing an admission of the affair and a
promise to stay faithful from then on, a violation of which could see him
reported to the authorities for adultery (which is illegal in Indonesia).
In
other Instagram stories, Inara said Virgoun cheated on her despite pressuring
her to maintain her physical appearance.
“I
had no problems with my husband’s demand to lower my weight to 48 kilograms
even though I had to endure the pain from injections. And that he told me to go
to beauty clinics for laser therapy on certain parts of my body,” she wrote.
“He
told me to remove my niqab (face veil) because he still enjoyed worldly
pleasures and he wanted to be acknowledged as having a beautiful wife.”
Inara
also said that Virgoun asked for sex while they were fasting during the holy
month of Ramadan. Under Islamic rules, one cannot engage in sexual activities
while fasting during the day.
Virgoun
has been among the top trending topics in Indonesian social media for the past
few days, as netizens call for the musician to be canceled over his alleged
infidelity. He has yet to give a public statement addressing the scandal.
Inara,
meanwhile, said she has not asked for divorce out of consideration for their
three children and their extended families.

Dutch
Moroccan Egyptian Models Imaan Hammam, Gigi HadidShut down Met Gala Carpet
May
02, 2023
NEW
YORK: Dutch Moroccan Egyptian model Imaan Hammam shut down the Met Gala carpet
this week wearing a white dress by Irish designer Michael Stewart’s label
Standing Ground.
The
form-fitting, long sleeved dress had cream-colored fringe detailing at the
waist.
US
Palestinian Dutch model Gigi Hadid was also in attendance. She wore a Givenchy
ensemble in black with feathers, a drop waist and sheer train in tulle. It took
more than 300 hours to make.
Meanwhile,
Rihanna turned heads encased in white camellias on a jacket with a long train
gown.
In
the spirit of Lagerfeld himself, Rihanna and her Valentino couture had the
carpet to themselves save her partner, A$AP Rocky, who wore a red tartan skirt
over crystal-studded jeans with a train of his own.
Around
her neck was a short Bulgari necklace in Akoya cultured pearls and pearl-shaped
diamonds.
Lagerfeld
was the honoree at the A-list gala with many in the crowd of about 400 dressed
in vintage looks from the fashion houses where he worked during a career of
more than 60 years.
Dua
Lipa walked in a white Chanel ballgown from the fashion house’s archive and
Nicole Kidman chose a look Lagerfeld himself made for her 20 years ago.
Lipa,
a gala co-chair, wore a Tiffany & Co. diamond around her neck. She called
her cream-colored dress, by Chanel from 1992, “very, very special” as it has
been on her mood boards.
Kidman
said it was Lagerfeld who ignited her fashion spark. She wore a pale pink gown
created by Lagerfeld for a Chanel No. 5 commercial she starred in. It's adorned
with 3,000 silver crystals for the ad directed by BazLuhrmann.
“I’m
very grateful to wear it,” she told The Associated Press. “He was so much a
part of my life, as were his whole team. He was the one really sort of
shepherded me … in terms of my love of fashion.”
Kidman
topped off her look with Harry Winston diamonds.
Cardi
B first donned pink then switched to a full black ballgown with, you guessed
it, camellias. Up top, she said, “is giving Karl, the house of Chanel and Karl
at the same time.” It was a men’s white collar shirt accent with a black men’s
tie. The outfit in honor of Lagerfeld was done by an up-and-coming British
design house, Chenpeng Studio.
“The
Met Gala dress code was ‘in honor of Karl’ and guests definitely understood the
assignment,” said Alison Cohn, deputy fashion news editor for Harper's Bazaar.
“They referenced the many signatures Karl Lagerfeld developed over his
six-decade plus career.”
And
there were some bombshells: Serena Williams wore a flapper Gucci look when she
announced she’s pregnant with her second child.
Kendall
Jenner was in black, sans pants. She wore a sparkly leotard with long sleeves
that has pieces doubling as a train. On her feet were kinky, towering black
boots, all courtesy of Marc Jacobs.
Jenner’s
high white collar was a nod to those worn by Lagerfeld. Her hair was in a high
ponytail.
Kim
Kardashian, meanwhile, went with loops and loops of pearls all over her
Schiaparelli look.

Muslim
Woman In Hijab Assaulted In Berlin Subway Station
01.05.2023
A
Muslim woman in a hijab was racially assaulted in a Berlin subway station,
local media reported on Monday.
The
incident was the latest in a string of xenophobic attacks in the German capital
targeting people of foreign appearance, including Muslim women with
headscarves.
Berlin
police confirmed that a 20-year-old Muslim woman at the RathausNeukolln subway
station suffered minor injuries after a person verbally and physically attacked
her, tried to remove her hijab, and pulled her hair.
The
suspect uttered racial slurs before fleeing the scene, according to the police.
An
investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the assailant.
Germany
has witnessed growing racism and Islamophobia in recent years, fueled by the
propaganda of far-right groups and parties, which have exploited the refugee
crisis and attempted to stoke fear of immigrants.
Authorities
registered at least 569 Islamophobic crimes in 2022, including verbal and
physical assaults, threatening letters, and arson attacks targeting mosques.

Iran’s
Repressive, Ineffective Campaign against Abortion
MAY
2, 2023
SHOHREH
MEHRNAMI
Two
and a half years after the passage of the “Rejuvenation of the Population and
Protection of the Family” law and a multitude of directives issued by various
department of the executive branch, efforts to carry out the wishes of Supreme
Leader Ali Khamenei, who for years has been obsessed with increasing Iran’s
population, has continued.
In
recent years the Islamic Republic’s policies have aimed to aggressively
increase the population of Iran at whatever cost. This has involved
questionable measures, like offering hefty loans to couples who have a third
child and criminalizing family planning services.
In
the latest measure aimed at discouraging abortions and access to birth control,
the Ministry of Sciences and Technology, which supervises universities in Iran,
issued a directive on April 25 to remove educational material in institutions
of higher education that opposes “childbearing.”
***
Since
November 2021, when the “Rejuvenation of the Population” law went into effect,
screening of fetuses and surgeries to prevent pregnancy were severely limited
and even banned. Also banned were free contraceptives. Furthermore, several
directives and guidelines to encourage couples to have children and to prevent
dissemination of any kind of information about contraceptives have been issued,
but apparently the government officials are still unhappy with the results of
their actions.
In
February, the National Organization for Civil Registration published statistics
showing that the birth rate fell in 2022 to its lowest level in the past 11
years.
Despite
the failure of the government’s policies to force people to have children,
governmental organizations continue to issue directives without taking into
account the results of previous measures. The directive by the Ministry of
Sciences offers incentives like making it easier for women university students
to get leaves of absence if they are pregnant or need to nurse an infant.
Population
Growth to Secure the Regime
Sociologist
Eli Khorsandfar says that a high population growth rate is favored by
totalitarian regimes because it contributes to securing their rule.
However,
she says, modern life and rapid changes in modern societies has made people
less interested in having children. What is more, lack of financial and job
security in Iran means parts of society are unwilling to have children or even
to marry.
According
to the sociologist, Islamic Republic’s propaganda and actions are aimed at two
population groups: those share the ideological values of the Islamic Republic
and the underprivileged, which also include members of the first group.
According
to her, members of both groups might be receptive to the government’s programs
and propaganda, but it appears they have not contributed to population growth
as much as the government had hoped.
“Rejuvenation
of the Population” Program and Its Adverse Health Consequences Directives and
guidelines issued by the government ministries and agencies have had no effect
on population growth and have had numerous adverse effects on the health of
Iranian women. And if they lead to unwanted pregnancy, negative social
consequences follow as well.”
Referring
to the recent directive by the Ministry of Sciences and other actions to ban
contraceptives and other ways to prevent pregnancy, public health expert Dr.
Sahar Motallebi tells IranWire that in the past few decades Iranian women have
had access to free consultation, guidance and what is necessary to prevent
pregnancy. But now, with the government’s campaign to increase the population,
access to such programs has become very limited and budgets for these programs
have been cut off.
Meanwhile,
no budget has been earmarked for a nationwide program to inoculate women with
the HPV vaccine which, among other things, reduces the risk of cervical cancer.
This has led to an increase in the number of HPV, or human papillomavirus, a
group of more than 200 related viruses, and HIV infections. According to the
Iranian Society of Gynecology Oncology, half of Iranian women with cervical
cancer die.
Also,
she says, restrictions on the screening of fetuses, imposed after the
“Rejuvenation of the Population” law went into effect, has led to an increase
in the number of births of genetically defective or disabled babies. This, in
turn, has imposed enormous psychological and financial costs on the families
and society.
Making
Abortion a Crime
The
Islamic Republic has also made abortion a crime. Except in very rare cases
where a commission decides that the fetus is defective or the woman’s life is
in danger, a person who has an abortion and anybody who “aids and abets”
abortions are considered a criminal.
“If
a doctor is involved in an intentional abortion his permit will be revoked,
even if it is his first time,” said Saber Jaberi, the ministry’s head of Youth
Population Department.
However,
the rate of abortions in Iran has not subsided. In earlier April, Dr.
SoleimanHeydari, a high-level official at the Ministry of Health, called the
number of illegal abortions “catastrophic.” And, on April 24, Deputy Health
Minister Dr. Saeed Karimi announced that more than 100 cases against
individuals who have distributed contraceptives or played a role in abortions
were sent to court. According to unofficial data, at least 600,000 women
undergo “illegal” pregnancy terminations every year in Iran.
Dr.
Motallebi says that underground abortions increase the number of women who die
or suffer from permanent disabilities due to unsanitary conditions and bungled
operations. Criminalizing abortion also increased the number of infanticides
and abandoned babies and children.
Meanwhile,
those who can afford it travel to neighboring countries to have an abortion
without fear of being prosecuted.

Landmark
verdict grants Turkish women right to use their maiden name
APR
28, 2023
The
Turkish Constitutional Court passed a verdict on Friday granting Turkish
married women the right to keep their maiden name after marriage. Likewise, the
court annulled the law requiring a married woman to take her husband's last
name after marriage or hyphenate it with her maiden name, according to Official
Gazette.
According
to the 8th Family Court of Istanbul, the provision in Article No. 187 of the
Turkish Civil Code states, "A married woman being unable to use her maiden
name is unconstitutional as it is against Article 10 of the Constitution,
referring to the inequality between men and women."
Many
individual applications have been made to the European Court of Human Rights
(ECtHR) and the Constitutional Court, claiming that "not allowing the
woman to use her pre-marriage surname after marriage leads to a violation of
rights." In this context, the ECtHR decided that not allowing a woman to
use her maiden name alone violated Article 14 of the convention within the
meaning of Article 8 of the convention.
The
Constitutional Court stated that the provisions of international conventions
should be used to stipulate that men and women have equal rights in terms of
surnames after marriage and pointed out that the domestic law regulations that
stipulate that the married woman must use her husband's surname contain different
provisions on the same subject.
In
this respect, implementing Article 187 of Law No. 4721 for the applicants was
incompatible with the principle of legality and led to a violation.
Following
the Constitutional Court's findings, the Supreme Court of Appeals developed
critical jurisprudence in cases related to women's surnames and accepted that
the provisions of international conventions should be applied according to the
fifth paragraph of Article 90 of the Constitution.
Having
a surname, often a crucial part of a woman's identity, is an obligation and a
right under Article 20 of the Constitution. The ECtHR accepted that the
abovementioned right falls within the scope of Article 8 of the European
Convention on Human Rights. With the constitutional amendments made during the
process, the principle of equality before the law was strongly emphasized and
it was stressed that it should be fully ensured.
The
country places great emphasis on women's rights. It continues to work toward
and develop guarantees through laws and administrative practices to ensure
gender equality.
