India shows mirror to Pak at UNSC meet on despicable condition of minority women

Oct 26 2024

United Nations, Oct 26 2024

-----------

India rebuked Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate, condemning the move as “despicable” and a “mischievous provocation” rooted in Pakistan’s “tried and tested tactic of spreading misinformation.” It also showed the mirror to Pakistan on the despicable condition of minority women in the country.

During the UNSC debate on “Women Building Peace in a Changing Environment,” Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a strong Right of Reply against Pakistan.

He criticised Pakistan’s attempt to bring up Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at the forum, accusing it of “political propaganda” in an inappropriate setting.

“It is despicable yet entirely predictable that one delegation has indulged in mischievous provocation based on their tried and tested tactic of spreading misinformation and disinformation. It’s completely misplaced to indulge in such political propaganda at this important annual debate,” Harish remarked.

The exchange followed Pakistan’s remarks referring to J&K, which Harish dismissed while shifting focus onto the conditions of minority women in Pakistan.

“We are well aware that the condition of women belonging to minority communities, notably Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians in that country, remains deplorable,” he said.

Citing data from Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission, he continued, “An estimated thousand women from these minority communities are subject to abduction, forced religious conversions, and forced marriages every year. I could go on, but I end here,” he said, underscoring Pakistan’s lack of action.

India also expressed gratitude to Switzerland for organising the debate, reaffirming its commitment to the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda.

“As we approach the 25th anniversary of Council Resolution 1325, India reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda,” Harish noted.

“We recognise that sustainable peace requires women’s full, equal, meaningful, and safe participation at all levels of decision-making, including politics, governance, institution-building, rule of law, the security sector, and economic recovery,” Harish said.

Recalling the 2007 deployment of the first all-female formed police unit to Liberia, he stated that India has made “significant strides in implementing the WPS agenda.”

“As the fifth largest troop contributor, India deployed the first-ever all-female formed police unit to Liberia in 2007, setting a precedent in UN peacekeeping. Their work garnered tremendous appreciation within Liberia and in the UN,” he said.

Harish noted that over 100 Indian women peacekeepers currently serve worldwide, including three all-women Female Engagement Teams. He also recognised Major Radhika Sen, who received the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for her service in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023.

India’s Permanent Representative also mentioned the country’s legislative efforts to empower women politically, highlighting the Women’s Reservation Bill passed in 2023, which aims to increase women’s representation in decision-making roles.

Harish emphasised India’s commitment to furthering the WPS agenda, with plans to enhance women’s representation in peacekeeping, share best practices, and support to capacity-building initiatives for women peacebuilders.

He concluded by expressing India’s dedication to transforming the WPS agenda from theory to practice, pledging India’s readiness to work with all stakeholders to foster a more peaceful, inclusive, and gender-equal world.

War affects over 600 million women and girls, UN says

October 26, 2024

UNITED NATIONS: More than 600 million women and girls are now affected by war, a 50 percent increase from a decade ago, and they fear the world has forgotten them amid an escalating backlash against women’s rights and gender equality, top UN officials say.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a new report that amid record levels of armed conflict and violence, progress over the decades for women is vanishing and “generational gains in women’s rights hang in the balance around the world.”

The UN chief was assessing the state of a Security Council resolution adopted on Oct. 31, 2000, that demanded equal participation for women in peace negotiations, a goal that remains as distant as gender equality.

Guterres said current data and findings show that “the transformative potential of women’s leadership and inclusion in the pursuit of peace” is being undercut — with power and decision-making on peace and security matters overwhelmingly in the hands of men.

“As long as oppressive patriarchal social structures and gender biases hold back half our societies, peace will remain elusive,” he warned.

The report says the proportion of women killed in armed conflicts doubled in 2023 compared with a year earlier; UN-verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence were 50 percent higher; and the number of girls affected by grave violations in conflicts increased by 35 percent.

At a two-day UN Security Council meeting on the topic that ended Friday, SimaBahous, head of the UN agency promoting gender equality known as UN Women, also pointed to a lack of attention to women’s voices in the search for peace.

She cited the fears of millions of women and girls in Afghanistan deprived of an education and a future; of displaced women in Gaza “waiting for death”; of women in Sudan who are victims of sexual violence; and of the vanishing hopes of women in Myanmar, Haiti, Congo, the Sahel region of Africa, South Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen and elsewhere.

Bahous said 612 million women and girls who are affected by war “wonder if the world has already forgotten them, if they have fallen from the agenda of an international community overwhelmed by crises of ever deeper frequency, severity and urgency.”

The world needs to answer their fears with hope, she said, but the reality is grim: “One in two women and girls in conflict-affected settings are facing moderate to severe food insecurity, 61 percent of all maternal mortality is concentrated in 35 conflict-affected countries.”

“The percentage of women in peace negotiations has not improved over the last decade: under 10 percent on average in all processes, and under 20 percent in processes led or supported by the United Nations,” she said.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed announced the launch of a “Common Pledge on Women’s Participation in Peace Processes,” and urged governments, regional organizations and others involved in mediation to join the UN in taking concrete steps toward that end. The commitments include appointing women as lead mediators and team members, promoting direct and meaningful participation of women in peace processes, consulting women leaders at all stages and embedding women with expertise “to foster gender-responsive peace processes and agreements,” she said.

Many UN ambassadors who spoke at the council meeting focused on the lack of “political will” to promote women in the peace process.

“We’ve seen how the lack of political will continues to stand in the way of the full implementation of the commitments entered into by member states,” Panama’s UN Ambassador Eloy Alfaro de Alba said Friday.

Meryl Streep’s Advocacy Efforts for Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

27 October 2024

OXFORD, United Kingdom — Women’s rights in Afghanistan are currently severely threatened under the new Taliban regime. Reports indicate that 64% of women feel completely unsafe leaving their homes alone due to the Taliban’s highly restrictive laws, which deny women their basic rights and freedoms. The denial of these fundamental rights, including access to education and employment, has worsened the feminization of poverty. In response to this dire situation, Hollywood actress Meryl Streep attended the U.N. General Assembly in New York on September 23, 2024, to advocate for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.

In the past 50 years, Afghanistan’s political system has fluctuated due to constant governmental changes. In 2001, the Taliban was forced to leave its position of political power. Consequently, Afghanistan has witnessed moments of progression regarding women’s rights. For instance, during international intervention, women and girls were able to return to school and work and “in 2009, Afghanistan adopted the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) law.”

However, the instability of politics in Afghanistan has made it extremely challenging to create any long-lasting political change. Returning to power in 2021, the Taliban has completely erased any progress made regarding women’s rights. Since the reinstatement of the Taliban, gender-based violence has risen and “women and girls have been banned from attending secondary school, working, appearing on TV or even just going to a park.” Ultimately, Afghanistan has earned last place on the Women, Peace and Security Index, pointing to the critical dangers of existing as a woman under the Taliban regime.

Most will likely know Streep for her performances in films such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Mamma Mia!” and many more. However, Streep has a history of advocacy and philanthropy efforts when she is not behind the camera. Streep has donated money to various causes, such as Coalition for the Homeless. Furthermore, by using her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes in 2017 to show support for the Committee to Protect Journalists, Streep has demonstrated consistent support for those in need.

Not stopping there, the Hollywood actress recently showed her support for women’s rights in Afghanistan at the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Speaking “alongside Afghan activists and human rights defenders,” Streep joined the discussion to urge the U.N. to take action in safeguarding and restoring women’s rights in a country ruled by the Taliban’s totalitarian force. She powerfully expressed, “A squirrel has more rights than a girl in Afghanistan,” emphasizing the extreme repression faced by Afghan women and girls.

Streep’s speech has received praise from human rights activists and people have widely shared it around the internet. Indeed, Steep’s speech has reached audiences that may not usually take an interest in global current affairs. As a known and loved celebrity, Streep’s advocacy efforts are incredibly impactful as she is able to spread awareness on an extensive scale. This is bringing global attention to a pressing issue and setting an example to those in a position of privilege and influence to utilize their voice for the benefit of those in vulnerable situations.

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza leave 22 dead, including women and children: Palestinian officials

October 27, 2024

Israeli airstrikes in northern Gaza late Saturday left at least 22 Palestinians dead, including 11 women and two children, according to Palestinian medical officials. The strikes hit several homes and buildings in the town of Beit Lahiya, where another 15 people were wounded. Health officials fear the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.

Israel, which has not commented on the latest strike, has been waging a three-week-long air and ground offensive in Gaza, targeting what it describes as Hamas strongholds. The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 42,000 Palestinians killed since the conflict escalated in early October, with more than half believed to be women and children. The ongoing offensive has led to mass displacement, forcing tens of thousands to flee to Gaza City, where squalid conditions in tent camps have raised humanitarian concerns.

Trump, Harris face Michigan voters concerned over Gaza, economy, women’s rights

17-10-2024

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appealed to Muslim voters in Michigan on Saturday as Michelle Obama made an impassioned plea on behalf of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris at the party’s rally in the battleground state.

Harris and Trump are battling for Michigan voters that include an Arab American and Muslim population concerned about the war in Gaza, ongoing since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 massacre in southern Israel, and union workers worried about how electric vehicles could reshape the United States auto industry, which is headquartered in Detroit, the state’s largest city.

Speaking at a rally outside Detroit, Trump said he had just met with a group of local imams, arguing that he deserved the support of Muslim voters because he would end conflicts and bring peace to the Middle East.

“That’s all they want,” Trump said in the Detroit suburb of Novi, also pledging to auto workers at the rally that he would reverse economic decline in the Detroit area and nationwide.

Republican presidential nominee former US President Donald Trump, right, looks on as local Muslim leaders speak during a campaign rally at the Suburban Collection Showplace, October 26, 2024, in Novi, Michigan (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Even so, Trump appears to be gaining support from some Muslim Americans upset with US President Joe Biden’s and Harris’s support of Israel, and despite Trump banning immigration from some Muslim-majority countries in his first term as president.

Imam BelalAlzuhairi of the Islamic Center of Detroit joined Trump on stage, saying, “We ask Muslims to stand with President Trump because he promises peace.”

With some 8.4 million registered voters and 15 electoral college votes of the 270 needed to win, Michigan is one of seven competitive US states that will decide the election. It is part of the “Blue Wall” that is considered the Democrats’ best chance of electing Harris, along with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In the southern Michigan city of Kalamazoo, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) away, Harris drew contrasts between her and Trump on issues such as abortion rights, taxes and healthcare.

But first Obama, the popular wife of former US president Barack Obama, fired up the crowd by drawing distinctions between the two candidates on personal character and qualifications, saying there was a double standard in how Trump and Harris were being treated.

Obama also addressed women’s health at length, saying Trump has failed to demonstrate an understanding of its complexity and that his vows to rescind the Affordable Care Act passed during her husband’s presidency would affect the “entirety of women’s health, all of it.”

Harris was several minutes into an upbeat address when she was interrupted by a demonstrator who repeatedly yelled, “No more Gaza war.”

After Harris supporters shouted down the interruption, she responded, “On the topic of Gaza, we must end that war,” then picked up where she left off, asking voters to “turn the page on the fear and the divisiveness.”

“Over the last eight years, Donald Trump has become more confused, more unstable and more angry, and it is clear he has become increasingly unhinged. But the last time, at least there were people who could control him, but notice they’re not with him this time,” Harris said.

Harris heard from six women medical providers who described being inundated by patients from other regions due to a lack of reproductive healthcare in their areas since Roe was overturned.

After leaving Michigan, Trump traveled to Pennsylvania, where he tried to reel in young voters with a rally on the campus of Penn State University, at one point bringing the school’s wrestling team on stage with him.

Harris is leading Trump nationally by a marginal 46 percent to 43%, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed. In Michigan, Harris leads by even less – 47.6% to 47.1%, according to opinion poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight.

Since the 2020 election, Michigan has instituted early in-person voting for the first time and begun permitting jurisdictions with more than 5,000 people to begin processing and tabulating mail ballots eight days before the November 5 Election Day.

So far, 19.5% of registered voters in Michigan, or nearly 1.42 million people, have voted, Michigan’s State Department said on Friday. Only 10,900 were in-person early votes, while the rest were returned absentee ballots.

Israel Releases Photos, Videos Of Iran Strikes, Female Fighter Pilots Sent On Mission

By: Shankhyaneel Sarkar

October 26, 2024

Israeli female fighter pilots of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) were part of the squadron that carried out a retaliatory attack on Iranian military sights in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Israel attacked military targets in Iran with pre-dawn airstrikes Saturday marking the first time Israel’s military has openly attacked Iran.

Following the airstrikes, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said it had a right to self-defense, and “considers itself entitled and obligated to defend against foreign acts of aggression.”

Israel’s military said it targeted facilities that Iran used to make the missiles fired at Israel as well as surface-to-air missile sites. There was no immediate indication that oil or nuclear sites were hit, which would have marked a much more serious escalation. Israel offered no immediate damage assessment.

Explosions could be heard in Iran’s capital, Tehran, until sunrise. The Islamic Republic said the attacks caused “limited damage.” Iran’s military said the strikes targeted military bases in Ilam, Khuzestan and Tehran provinces, without elaborating. Iran’s army said four soldiers were killed, Iran’s Al-Alam television reported.

The strikes risk pushing the archenemies closer to all-out war at a time of spiraling violence across the Middle East, where militant groups backed by Iran — including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon — are already at war with Israel.

Türkiye faces rising breast cancer rates, urges early detection

Oct 27, 2024

Recent data reveals that approximately 2.5 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with breast cancer, with Türkiye accounting for a significant portion of this statistic, with 25,000 new cases annually.

General Surgery Specialist Dr. FerhatErdemUğraş from Acıbadem Bursa Hospital emphasizes the critical need for early detection and effective screening methods to combat this prevalent disease.

Breast cancer has become the most common cancer in Türkiye, and Dr. Uğraş warns that the number of diagnoses has been steadily increasing. He explains, “With advancements in imaging technologies, we can now detect tumors that are too small to be felt during a manual examination. Early detection is vital. The success rate of treatment can soar to 95% when the disease is caught in its initial stages. Moreover, timely intervention significantly reduces the risk of death associated with breast cancer.”

Dr. Uğraş advocates for proactive measures, stressing the importance of screening programs that can identify tumors even in their smallest form. He outlines the recommended approach for women, stating that from age 20, young women should conduct monthly self-examinations, particularly between the 4th and 10th days of their menstrual cycle, and should also check their armpits.

After reaching 30, women should continue self-exams while adding annual breast ultrasounds to their routine; once they turn 40, incorporating a yearly mammogram into regular health checks becomes essential.

In instances where screenings raise suspicions, Dr. Uğraş insists that a biopsy is essential for a definitive diagnosis. He notes that fear and anxiety often cause some women to delay these crucial tests.

“We want to stress that timely exams are essential for early detection. With early detection, the treatment process is quicker, and breast loss is less likely,” he states.

Advancements in surgical techniques have led to the rise of breast-conserving surgeries that remove only the cancerous tissue, preserving the rest of the breast. In cases where a mastectomy is necessary, breast reconstruction options are available, ensuring that patients have support through their treatment journey.

Dr. Uğraş also highlights the collaborative effort required in breast cancer treatment, involving a diverse team of specialists ranging from surgeons to radiation oncologists and pathologists. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive the most effective and personalized care possible.

As new treatment methods and smart medications continue to evolve, the outlook for breast cancer patients in Türkiye is becoming increasingly hopeful. Dr. Uğraş concludes, “The advancements in personalized treatments are enhancing the success rates for our patients, providing them with not just hope but also tangible results in their battle against breast cancer.”

With the rising incidence of breast cancer, awareness, early detection and regular screenings are more crucial than ever for ensuring the health and well-being of women in Türkiye.
