Enforce Hijab Before Women Come Out 'Naked' In Summer, Iran Cleric Says
Young Iranian women removing their headscarves

Friday
imam of Ahvaz in southwestern Iran says the government will not back down in
enforcing hijab, otherwise women will come to the street naked this summer.
During
a sermon on Friday, Mohammad Nabi Mousavifard called on the authorities to
approve a law to deal with women who do not observe hijab.
“People
and social service providers should stop giving services to people without
hijab; People should give women with improper hijab warnings and not be
indifferent, otherwise they will come to the street naked in the summer,” noted
the cleric.
In
January, the Supreme Leader’s representative in the city of Karaj said the
reason for low precipitation and drought in the country is a lack of hijab
observance, after many women took off their veils following months of protests.
Mohammad-Mehdi
Hosseini Hamedani, the Friday prayer imam in Karaj, reiterated that observance
of hijab should be enforced strictly in society.
"It
is not possible to imagine that we are living in an Islamic country when we
enter some institutions, shopping malls, pharmacies, etc.!" he said,
calling on the authorities to warn shops and malls not to serve women who have
removed their hijab and close them down if warnings did not suffice.

When
the Taliban seized power in August 2021, hundreds of women’s rights activists
fled Afghanistan, fearing reprisals from the militant group. But Mahbouba
Seraj, one of the most prominent rights campaigners in the country, refused to
leave, even though she holds a US passport, the media reported.
Despite
intimidation from the Taliban, the 75-year-old has continued to advocate for
the rights of women and girls and operate a network of shelters for women
fleeing domestic abuse, as per official media reports.

Al-Nassr

over Al-Yamamah on the 14th and last match day of the season.
Al-Nassr

Advocates
gather at Scissortail Park to support women in Iran

Nearly
70 demonstrators walked down the sidewalk outside of Scissortail Park chanting,
“Women, life, freedom” on Saturday in protest of the current Iranian regime.
Feb.
11 marks the 44th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution of 1979, which resulted
in a regime change from a monarchy to the current Islamic Republic, according
to an AP News article.
“Today,
we're all around the world,” Semira Mirzaie, a demonstrator and one of the
protest organizers, said. “Iranian communities from all around the U.S. went to
Washington, D.C., and many went to Los Angeles … you'll see hundreds and
thousands of people there. We have a hope that they can change the regime, and
people can not get arrested (and) live freely.”
Amini
died in police custody after she was detained for allegedly violating the
country’s hijab laws, requiring women to wear the garment in public. Since
then, protests have ensued in both the U.S. and Iran, where government
authorities responded violently.
“The
compulsory hijab has become a symbol of the omnipresence of the Iranian
government since it seized power after the 1979 revolution,” Peyman Hekmatpour,
protest speaker and OU alumnus, said during the protest. “The people protesting
on the streets of Iran also faced tremendous violence from the Islamic
Republic's security forces.
Hekmatpour
lead the group, who waved Iranian flags with ‘women, life, freedom’ printed on
them. Shouts of, “One solution, revolution!” and “Regime change in Iran!”
echoed down the street.
During
his speech, Hekmatpour said Western governments, including the U.S., should
support the demonstrators’ goals of overthrowing the current Iranian regime.
“The
world needs to speak out against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Hekmatpour
said. “The time has come to understand the importance of taking a stance.”

President
Raisi Claims Women Are Free In Iran
12-02-2023
Iran’s
President Ebrahim Raisi claimed on Saturday that women are free in Iran and
their presence in different fields is “strong”.
His
statements echo similar claims by regime officials, especially during the five
months of anti-regime protests that began in September following the death of
Mahsa Amini in police custody.
Women
have faced many restrictions and prohibitions in the four decades since the
establishment of the Islamic Republic, including the imposition of mandatory
hijab, and the ban on singing and dancing.
In
addition to lifestyle restrictions, women are discriminated against in
obtaining high-level government posts and in receiving inheritance.
In
another part of his speech, Raisi emphasized that the slogan "Neither East,
nor West" is still one of the pillars of the Islamic Republic, although
the regime has aligned itself with Russia and China.
For
more than a decade, Iran and the governments of Russia and China, as
"Eastern powers", have had close relations in various fields,
including the military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the war on
Ukraine.
In
another part of his speech, Raisi said the protesters had been "deceived
during the riots", alleging that they "realized the enemy is looking
for sedition."

International
Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated in Saskatchewan
By
Andrew Benson
February
11, 2023
February
11 marks International Day of Women and girls in science, and the Saskatchewan
Science Centre is bringing attention to women in scientific professions.
The
science centre’s 2023 “Girls in STEM” conference took place this week, in an
event aimed at helping young women understand that anyone can be a scientist,
coder, architect or engineer.
“The
idea is to get young girls to meet women in STEM and get inspired by them,”
said Sandra Baumgartner, the Saskatchewan Science Centre CEO. “The chance to
listen and learn to see if science and engineering is something they want to
pursue,”
Those
at the science centre say evidence suggests that while in school, girls perform
on par with boys when it comes to grades and education within science.
Women
make up 50 percent of Canada’s workforce and a recent study from 3M Canada
showed that 83 per cent of women face barriers while pursuing STEM education.
“It
really does come from the formative years,” Penny Wise, the president of 3M
Canada said when discussing the challenges women face stem education. “Whether
you’re in elementary school and people say ‘girls aren’t good at math’ or
‘girls aren’t good at science’ and those myths perpetuate and build upon
themselves.”
Wise
says solutions to these barriers can be found through mentorship and visible
representation. That was the case for Jenna McEwen who recently graduated from
the University of Regina with a degree in cellular and molecular biology.
“There
are still a lot of barriers for women who want to have children or have a
family,” Loos said. “These careers are often so demanding that it screens them
out. So they have to choose between having a family or following their dream
career.”
“I
hope that one day we see free education for all students so that they won’t
have this barrier that makes them say ‘I want to be this but I can’t afford to
be this,’” she explained.
“The
world going to get nothing but better with more women in these fields so yes I
definitely feel things are changing for the better,” she said.
