Hijab Ban Isn't There Anymore: Karnataka Chief Minister

Karnataka Hijab Row

----

TOI News Desk / TIMESOFINDIA.COM / Dec 22, 2023

The Karnataka government on Friday said it will withdraw the ban on wearing of hijab in educational institutions which was imposed under the previous BJP rule.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah said that he has directed officials to withdraw the order, saying that women are free to wear hijab (head covering) and go anywhere.

"Hijab ban isn't there anymore.

(Women) can wear hijab and go anywhere ... How you dress and what you eat is your choice. Why should I obstruct you?," the chief minister said during a gathering in Mysore.

He also lashed out at the BJP government, accusing it of dividing people on the basis of clothes, dress and caste.

The Congress government in Karnataka had earlier hinted that it would withdraw the order after coming to power in May this year.

The hijab row had erupted after six students at the Government Pre-University College for Girls, Udupi, who were not allowed to enter their classrooms wearing the hijab, began a protest in December 2021.

The protests spread across the state, vitiating educational campuses in coastal and Malnad districts.

The previous BJP government had issued a circular prohibiting hijabs in schools and pre-university colleges in the state.

The matter reached the Karnataka HC, which upheld the decision of the state government.

The issue was later taken up in the Supreme Court where a two-judge bench pronounced a split verdict. The Supreme Court then said it would consider setting up a three-judge bench to adjudicate the matter.

Iran shutters bookshop over hijab law violation: Report

Dec 22, 2023

The closure is part of punitive measures by authorities over past year against women & businesses who fail to observe the Islamic republic's strict dress code.

Iranian police on Friday closed a major bookshop in the centre of the capital Tehran for allowing unveiled women to enter the premises without a compulsory headscarf, a newspaper reported.

The closure is part of punitive measures by authorities over the past year against women and businesses who fail to observe the Islamic republic's strict dress code.

"Today, at around noon (0830 GMT), police officers went to the central Tehran branch of Shahr-e-Ketab (book city in Farsi) and closed it," reformist Shargh daily said on its website.

Shargh cited the reasons for the closure as "the non-observance of trade union regulations and the orders of the interior ministry" as well as "the presence of customers without veils".

The bookshop confirmed its closure by authorities in a brief statement on its official Instagram account without elaborating.

Covering the head and the neck has been compulsory for women in Iran since 1983, following the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Women in Iran have increasingly defied the dress code since mass protests triggered by the September 16 death in police custody last year of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurd, who was arrested for allegedly flouting the dress rules.

During the months-long demonstrations, several hundred people were killed, including dozens of security forces, and thousands were arrested.

As part of efforts to enforce the ban over the past year, authorities have closed several businesses for not respecting the dress code and installed surveillance cameras in public places to monitor violations.

State media reported in July increased police patrols aimed at catching those ignoring the law and in September, parliament voted in favour of a bill that would toughen penalties on those who breach the dress code.

Human Rights Watch warns of UNAMA’s potential major compromise in Afghan girls’ education

Fidel Rahmati

December 22, 2023

The head of the Women’s Rights Division at Human Rights Watch reacted to reports about the education of girls in religious schools, stating that these schools are not an ‘acceptable substitute’ for public schools.

Heather Barr said it seems Roza Otunbayeva is ‘ready for a major and deeply harmful compromise’ in the absence of Afghan girls.

This senior Human Rights Watch official added on the social media platform X that for a country whose children learn only ‘extremist teachings,’ there is no future.

Previously, Roza Otunbayeva, the United Nations Special Representative in Afghanistan, had said that she had received ‘more evidence’ showing that more girls are being educated in religious schools.

Otunbayeva said on Thursday afternoon this week at a United Nations Security Council meeting that the organization is investigating reports about the education of girls in religious schools controlled by the Taliban.

She added that ‘the Taliban do not allow any monitoring of these schools and we do not know what is being taught there.’

However, Heather Barr criticized Roza Otunbayeva, saying it seems she is ‘ready for a major compromise’ with the Taliban.

Heather Barr described this compromise, which she said is happening in the absence of Afghan girls, as ‘impossible and deeply harmful.’

She said that Afghan experts repeatedly talk about replacing religious schools with public schools for the education of both girls and boys. Heather Barr asked, ‘Does the United Nations listen to these theories?’

She added that the United Nations is verifying reports that the Taliban allow girls to study in religious schools.

Meanwhile, this United Nations official said that the lack of a sufficiently modern curriculum with equal access for girls and boys will make the Taliban’s self-sufficiency economic plan impossible.

Previously, Human Rights Watch had reported earlier this month that the Taliban’s ‘abusive’ educational policies are harming both boys and girls.

According to the report, the Taliban’s actions, such as firing female teachers, corporal punishment of students, and regressive changes in the curriculum, have also led to the failure of boys’ schools.

At the same time, since the Taliban have fired all female teachers from boys’ schools, many boys are being taught by unqualified individuals or are in classes that have no teachers at all.

Qalandar Ebad: 150,000 Women Contribute to Health Sector of Afghanistan

December 22, 2023

The acting minister of public health of the Islamic Emirate said that 150,000 women are currently employed in the health sector in Afghanistan and that experienced women have been given jobs.

In his interview with a Malaysian news channel, Astro Awani, Qalandar Ebad said that the Islamic Emirate is not against women’s rights in Afghanistan and they are trying to create a safe environment for the education of girls above the sixth grade in the country.

“The number of women contributing to the health sector is 150, 000 females working in health sector. Here is a huge number, if you see these numbers in the ex-administration, you will never see this number, because many of the females who have the experience in different areas we have given them jobs in the health sector. And we have institutes for nursing, for midwifery and also for the post-graduation in different programs. Through this way, what we want to clarify is that we are not against the rights of the women education, we have allowed and opened doors for all women,” Qalandar Ebad said.

The acting minister of public health added that the government of the Islamic Emirate has the support of the Afghan people and it is time for the government to be recognized.

“In the last two years, we fulfilled all the requirements of the recognition. The UN has its own rules and regulations to recognize somebody or some country, and the international community they have rules and regulations. Look, the first priority inside Afghanistan is the peaceful condition. In last twenty years, there was not any peace inside Afghanistan; on a daily basis, there was killings, war and terror, hundreds of the people were killed at that time. But in the last two years, there has been hundred percent peaceful situation inside Afghanistan, this is a main thing,” Ebad noted.

“The remarks of the acting minister of public health that they are interested in education, is beyond his authority,” said Suraya Paikan, women’s rights activist.

This comes as more than 820 days have passed since girls above the sixth grade have been banned from going to school.

Black Woman In US Dials 911 To Report Domestic Violence, Shot Dead By Cop

December 23, 2023

A black woman in Los Angeles dialled 911, the emergency helpline number in the US, on December 4, to report domestic violence. The Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies responded to the distress call and arrived at her house, but a confrontation at her house resulted in the fatal killing of the black woman by the cop.

911 Distress Call

On the evening of December 4, 27-year-old Niani Finlayson dialled 911 to report a case of domestic violence in which she alleged that her boyfriend "would not leave her alone and then screaming and sounds of a struggle could be heard," the LA County Sheriff's department said.

The LA County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the apartment in East Avenue, Lancaster and heard people arguing and yelling. The cops forced open the door and found the woman holding a large kitchen knife. The cops claimed that the woman told them that she would stab her boyfriend for pushing her nine-year-old daughter. She rushed inside the apartment where her boyfriend was sitting and grabbed him while holding the large eighth-inch blade knife. The confrontation resulted in the fatal shooting and the woman received multiple gunshot wounds in front of her daughter.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead. The homicide investigators responded to the incident and an investigation is underway.

Family Contest Police's Claims

The woman dialled 911 and reported that she was inside with her nine-year-old daughter and had been injured by her ex-boyfriend and wanted him removed, the Guardian reported quoting the family's attorney.

Sheriff's deputy Ty Shelton allegedly killed a person under similar circumstances. In 2020, Ty Shelton, along with other deputies, responded to a 911 call reporting domestic violence on West Avenue. A confrontation between the deputy and the suspect, Michael Thomas, resulted in the fatal shooting of the man, who "refused to cooperate with the cops and tried to grab their gun while they were trying to handcuff him."

"The police lied that my mom was threatening them," Xaisha, her daughter, also a witness to her mother's shooting, said at a press conference on Thursday alongside her grandparents, calling for Shelton to be prosecuted. "She was my best friend. She was always there for me. It's unbelievable that she's gone and she's not coming back. I miss my mom," the nine-year-old said.

The girl said her two-year-old sister continues to ask where their mother is and she doesn't know how to respond.

Her family filed a legal claim against the county and sheriff's department alleging wrongful death, assault and civil rights violations and have started a $30,000 fundraiser in her memory.
