Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has praised the “courage and bravery” of protesters in Iran, who have been taking to the streets for more than a month following the death of an Iranian woman in police custody.

Iran has witnessed anti-government protests for a over month following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. Amini , a Kurdish-Iranian woman, fell into a coma shortly after being arrested by Iran’s morality police in September for “improper hijab.”

She died on September 16, prompting protests on social media and on the streets of Iran, and around the world.

US-based entrepreneur Mandana Dayani posted on her Instagram account on Wednesday that actress and wife of the UK’s Prince Harry spoke at an event during widespread protest across Iran.

“Meghan spoke about the revolution being led by women and young girls in Iran, the courage and bravery they show every day, and their leadership and advocacy of basic human rights: women, life, freedom,” the Instagram post said.

“As an Iranian woman who fled her home country in pursuit of these very freedoms, I could not have been more grateful for how she chooses, again and again, to advocate for women around the world,” it continued.

A number of other celebrities have spoken out in support of women in Iran. French actresses Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert and Marion Cotillard, cut their hair in solidarity with women in Iran.

Since Amini’s death, street violence in Iran has led to dozens of deaths, mostly among protesters but also among the security forces, and hundreds have of demonstrators been arrested.

Stefanie Glinski, a foreign journalist, and photographer has been barred from entering Afghanistan by the Taliban for her critical reporting, as part of the most recent crackdown on international media in Afghanistan.

According to a report from the International Federation of Journalists on Wednesday, October 19, the foreign journalist, Glinski, has been banned from entering Afghanistan.

The International Federation of Journalists denounced the travel restriction placed on journalists visiting Afghanistan and described them as a barrier to free speech and “persecution” of journalists.

Stefanie Glinski previously claimed that the Taliban harassed her via WhatsApp. She claimed that the Taliban were searching for her news sources.

Glinski reportedly spent four years in Afghanistan reporting for a variety of news organizations, including The Guardian and Foreign Policy. She left Kabul in July, but she started to worry about her safety after the Taliban recently investigated her reporting.

The federation said that “The Taliban must allow all journalists to work independently without fear of reprisal.”

An Australian journalist and columnist for Foreign Policy was previously threatened with imprisonment by the Taliban and was compelled to post a retraction tweet retracting her reports as untrue

According to the journalist Lynn O’Donnell, the Taliban agents disapproved of her coverage of LGBTQ people.

This comes as the Taliban reportedly detained journalists and mistreated journalists violating the freedom of the press and speech.

Lebanese female dance troupe Mayyas to perform in Dubai

20 October, 2022

Lebanese female dance troupe Mayyas who won the America's Got Talent finale are set to put on a showstopping performance in Dubai on Friday.

The Mayyas - whose win made them the season 17 competition series' champion, scooping the $1 million prize - will be part of an upcoming three-day music festival, Realm Fest, taking place this weekend.

They will join a line-up of regional artists such as Adomis, Jadal, Emirati singer-songwriter Hamdan al-Abrim and Lebanese singer Lea Makhoul.

The event will take place from October 21 to October 23 at Palm Jumeriah’s The Pointe. The event recognizes emerging musicians and talent in the industry.

The Mayyas will be performing on October 21.

The dance troupe won America's Got Talent in September – winning not only the mega cash prize but also a headlining show at Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

They first caught America's attention during their show-stopping audition, which prompted judge Sofía Vergara to press her Golden Buzzer.

During the live shows, the group delivered another hypnotizing dance routine that fellow judge and executive producer Simon Cowell predicted would “change the world.”

In the finale, the crew wowed both judges and the audience with their choreography and their performance featured white feathered outfits and sparkling globes of light, winning a standing ovation from the judges and crowd.

Mayyas was founded in Beirut by Nadim Cherfan, who is also the act's choreographer.

In 2019, the group appeared on the sixth series Arabs Got Talent and went on to win the series, receiving a new car and a $53,333 (200,000 Saudi riyal) cash prize.

Telangana: Hindu women asked to remove ‘mangalsutra’ for entry into exam centre, Muslims allowed with ‘burqa’

Sarmeeli Mallick

Oct 19, 2022

Adilabad (Telangana): At a time when the Supreme Court gave a split verdict on the hijab row in Karnataka’s educational institutions and referred the matter to the Chief Justice of India for constituting a larger bench to hear the case, the controversy surrounding the wearing of the covering by Muslim women has now raked up in Telangana as well.

Recently, allegations have come to the fore that at an exam centre in Telangana’s Adilabad, Hindu women were asked to remove and leave behind all their belongings, including bangles, earrings, anklets, toe rings, chains and a few women were also asked to unchain their ‘Mangalsutras’ by the security personnel deployed for entry to write the exam.

At the same time, it is also being claimed that Muslim women were seen entering the examination centre wearing ‘Burqa’ and no one, including the police personnel stopped them.

The incident occurred at Vidyarti Junior & Degree College in Adilabad during Group-1 preliminary examination conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) on October 16 (Sunday).

A video of the incident has been shared on Twitter which shows a woman clad in burqa entering the exam centre while other women were seen removing their jewellery to gain access to the centre. “This happened yesterday at a Group-1 examination centre in Telangana. Burqa is allowed but earrings, bangles and payal must be removed. Height of appeasement. Shameful indeed,” wrote BJP leader Priti Gandhi while sharing the video.

Other BJP leaders from the State also took to Twitter and launched a scathing attack stating that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government is doing the politics of minority appeasement. The BJP leaders questioned how Hindu women/girl candidates were asked to remove bangles, anklets, toe rings, chains, earrings and even ‘Mangalsutra’ while the authorities concerned allowed Muslim women to enter the examination centre wearing ‘burqa’.

Confirming the incident, a staff who requested anonymity, told TN that Muslim women were allowed to give the exam wearing burqa while Hindu women were not allowed into the examination hall wearing the ornaments, including mangalsutra.

On the other hand, TRS leader Krishan claimed everyone was equally frisked at the examination centre and criticised the BJP for disturbing communal peace by doing propaganda politics. He also shared a video on Twitter showing the security personnel checking a girl, wearing burqa. However, the authorities didn’t ask her to remove her Burqa and allowed her inside.

"At one Centre where TSPSC Group 1 Exam was held Police checked all aspirants as per Govt of India competitive exam guidelines without any partiality . But BJP who wants to disturb the communal peace and harmony of Telangana have shared few selective videos only !” he wrote in the video caption.

Meanwhile, Adilabad Superintendent of Police (SP), D Uday Kumar Reddy speaking to TN over phone admitted that the Hindu women were asked to remove their ornaments, including magalsutras due to some ‘mistake’ and it was rectified later.

“Initially that was the mistake of an MRO (Mandal Revenue Officer) because of which Hindu women were asked to remove all items. But, later police reached the spot and allowed Hindu women wearing Mangalsutra into the centre,” said the SP.

World’s female foreign ministers to meet on Iran, Canada says

October 19, 2022

DUBAI: The world’s female foreign ministers will discuss ongoing protests in Iran during a virtual meeting this week hosted by Canada, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly said in a statement on Wednesday.

Joly and her counterparts will meet on Thursday amid unrest ignited by Iranian Mahsa Amini’s death last month while being held by Tehran’s morality police, triggering one of the boldest challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution.

“My counterparts and I will gather to send a clear message: the Iranian regime must end all forms of violence and persecution against the Iranian people, including their brutal aggressions against women in particular,” Joly said.

“Canada will continue to stand by the courageous Iranians who are fighting for their human rights and standing up for their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. Women’s rights are human rights,” she said.

During the virtual meeting, the officials would hear from women of Iranian heritage and discuss the state of women’s and human rights in Iran, Joly’s office said, adding that it would give them an opportunity to coordinate efforts and discuss on “ways to increase their collective support for the Iranian people.”

Canada had joined other nations, including the United States, in imposing sanctions on Iran.

While the current unrest does not appear close to toppling the Iranian government, the situation has raised international concerns as talks on Iran’s nuclear capabilities appear at a stalemate and Tehran has moved to support Russia’s invasion in Ukraine in defiance of the West.

Iran has accused countries who have expressed support for the protests of meddling in its internal affairs.

The focus on Iranian women continued on Wednesday, as climber Elnaz Rekabi, who caused controversy by competing in an international contest without a veil, returned to Iran.

Amini, who hailed from Iran’s Kurdistan region, died Sept. 16 after being detained three days earlier by morality police in Tehran for her “inappropriate attire.”

Iran’s religious leaders have tried to portray the unrest as part of a breakaway uprising by the Kurdish minority threatening the nation’s unity, rather than a protest against clerical rule.

Latifa bint Mohammed visits the UAE’s first drop-in centre for women cancer patients

October 19, 2022

Dubai: Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), Member of the Dubai Council and Member of the Board of Trustees of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, visited Majlis Al Amal, the UAE’s first cancer drop-in centre, established by Al Jalila Foundation.

Majlis Al Amal is the first community centre of its kind that provides a ‘home away from home’ for female cancer patients and survivors.

Sheikha Latifa was received at the offices of Al Jalila Foundation by Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, and Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of the Foundation. She was briefed about the organisation’s health care programmes transforming patients’ lives. She was also briefed on the progress of the project to build ‘Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital’, the UAE’s first cancer charity hospital, being developed by Al Jalila Foundation with the mission of redefining cancer care in the region.

Free of charge services

Sheikha Latifa toured Majlis Al Amal where cancer patients can drop-in anytime for information, take part in art workshops, and attend educational sessions conducted by medical experts. The centre features several other activities designed to enhance the well-being of its members. The services of the centre are offered free of charge by volunteers passionate about making a difference to the lives of women affected by cancer. Less than a year since opening its doors, Majlis Al Amal has developed into a 400-strong community of women with cancer. The centre’s members come from all backgrounds united in their mission — to beat cancer.

During her visit, which supports international breast cancer awareness month being marked in October, Sheikha Latifa commended the Foundation’s various teams that work behind its programmes. She met with women who know first-hand the realities of cancer and its impact on their lives and that of their families, friends and their community.

Exceptional programmes

Sheikha Latifa said: “Al Jalila Foundation’s philanthropic medical initiatives have brought significant benefits to the community. Majlis Al Amal is one of the Foundation’s exceptional programmes that supports the physical and mental well-being of female cancer patients and survivors. It was very inspiring to meet and hear the incredible stories of some of the strong women who have found a sense of community and belonging in Majlis Al Amal. I look forward to the continued positive impact of the Foundation’s medical, education, support, and research programmes on people’s lives.”

Dr. Raja Easa Al Gurg said: “Majlis Al Amal supports cancer patients and survivors as they navigate the disease and its challenges. A cancer diagnosis has significant impact psychologically and emotionally and knowing that ‘you are not alone’ and that there is a community to lean on has a huge impact on the well-being of patients and their loved ones. Al Jalila Foundation aims to provide a support network in a safe, nurturing environment to women coping with the disease. The centre aims to keep the message of hope alive and improve the well-being of women during a very difficult time in their life.”

Emotional support

Dr. Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said: “Studies show that emotional support is integral in the healing journey and Majlis Al Amal provides a platform where women can speak openly about their fears, share experiences and lean on each other for comfort and support that they may otherwise not find outside of the ‘cancer community’. When we established Majlis Al Amal we knew it would be a very special place for women but we never imagined how much our members would come to depend on their new ‘circle of hope’. We are inspired by their stories and it is a privilege for my team and I to be a small part of their journey.”

Quality medical care

Since inception in 2013, Al Jalila Foundation has extended Dh10 million worth of support to 168 women with cancer unable to afford quality medical care, through it’s A’awen programme. One in six patients supported by Al Jalila Foundation have cancer. With the rising incidence of cancer and the consequent need for charity support for patients, Al Jalila Foundation is establishing ‘Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital’, the first comprehensive cancer charity hospital in the UAE, which brings together leading experts to manage prevention, diagnosis and treatment under one roof. The hospital is set to open in 2026 with a vision to redefine cancer care in the region.

As a member of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), which aims to improve the Arab world through humanitarian, developmental and community work, Al Jalila Foundation has, since inception, provided life-saving aid, locally and internationally, contributing to MBRGI’s mission to improve human life.
