------------
A controversy has erupted amid Uttar Pradesh Board exams with some students insisting on wearing burqas to the exam centres. According to News18 Hindi reports, in Jaunpur, four Muslim students insisted on taking the exam while wearing burqas. When prevented, their families took them home, refusing to let them sit for the exam without their faces covered. A similar incident has now reportedly come up in Moradabad, where a commotion arose concerning girls wearing burqas.
When the Class 10 students were asked to remove their hijabs during the security check, they protested. The situation escalated, with students reportedly declaring they would rather leave the examination hall rather than remove their hijabs. Family members of the protesting students also claimed that the girls were being prevented from entering the examination hall while wearing hijabs.
Subsequently, the matter was escalated to the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS). Devendra Kumar, the Moradabad DIOS, arrived at YPN Inter College in Thana Bhojpur and intervened in the situation. Approximately 15 minutes after the examination commenced, the girls were granted permission to proceed with the exam.
DIOS Devendra Kumar instructed teachers that candidates are permitted to wear any attire without restriction and emphasised that no cheating should take place during the examination.
The incident took place at Bhojpur’s YPN Inter College. The girls were subsequently permitted to take the exam while wearing their hijabs after undergoing checks by female teachers.

UP Board exam Day 1: Four girl students of Class 10 skipped their Hindi paper on the first day of the UP Board examinations in Jaunpur on Monday, refusing to remove their hijab after they were asked to do so by female invigilators at the entry of the exam hall at their centre. This happened before the commencement of the paper at the Sarvodaya Inter College. The girls returned home with their families, said officials.
"The students were stopped at the gate and asked to remove the hijab to go inside," said Ahmadullah (goes by first name), father of one of the four students.
"Rules of Board exams are being followed strictly. Four students refused to follow them and went home with their family without taking the exam," centre administrator and college principal Dinesh Chandra Gupta said.
"A total of 413 students appeared in the examination at the centre. Of them, 153 were Muslim girls. All the other Muslim girls took the exam, following the rules, except these four girls," he said.
College manager Anil Kumar Upadhyay said: "The four girls refused to remove the hijab for mandatory checking to match the candidates' face with the pictures on their admit cards. They refused. Two female teachers - Rekha Yadav and Firdaus Fatima - were deployed as invigilators at the entry to the exam hall to check the girl students."
Deputy inspector of schools (DIoS), Jaunpur, Rakesh Kumar said: "So far, no written letter regarding any such matter has been received at my office."
UP Board secretary in PrayagrajBhagwati Singh said: "Identity of all examinees is verified before being allowed to entry to examination halls. The presence of a woman member in the squad is necessary as per norms for checking female examinees. All students, including female students, are expected to cooperate with the exam centre officials in this regard. Any school or student violating these norms will face action as per rules."
In Jaunpur, 74,731 students were registered for the High School Hindi paper in the first shift on Monday, of which 70,787 took the exam while 3,944 skipped it.

Gopi: Rijiju supports equal inheritance rights for muslim women
Feb 26, 2025,
Kozhikode: Union minister of state for petroleum affairs, Suresh Gopi said Union minister of minority affairs, KirenRijiju, took a positive stance on the demand for equal inheritance rights for Muslim women.
Gopi was present when NISA founder and rights activist, VP Zuhra, met Rijiju to raise the demand in New Delhi on Monday.
In a Facebook message, Gopi said the minister assured further consultations with the Union Law Ministry, legal experts and other concerned authorities.
He mentioned that Zuhra presented a draft bill advocating amendments to ensure, justice and fairness in Muslim inheritance laws.
"I firmly stand for equality and justice for all and I will continue to support efforts that empower every individual in our society," Gopi said.
Zuhra had staged a hunger strike in New Delhi, demanding equal inheritance rights for Muslim women.
NISA has been demanding an amendment to the Muslim Law of Inheritance, saying that its provisions, including the one that states the daughters of Muslim parents, who do not have a male heir, are not entitled to their whole wealth and the property is shared among close male relatives, are discriminatory towards Muslim women.

Trapped Between Abuse and Tradition: Two Women’s Fatal Quest for Freedom in Iran
FEBRUARY 25, 2025
MARYAM DEHKORDI
On a cold February day, 23-year-old Donya Hosseini made a desperate choice that would cost her life.
After enduring eight years of domestic violence, she finally sought a divorce - only to be brutally stabbed to death by her father just four days later.
“Her family opposed the divorce, even though her husband was extremely violent and had repeatedly threatened to kill her,” says PardisRabiei, a women’s rights activist familiar with the case.
Donya’s troubles began at age 15 when, like many girls in traditional Kermanshah, she was forced into an arranged marriage with a relative.
Despite being allowed to study and work, she endured relentless abuse from her husband for eight years before reaching her breaking point.
In her final days, trapped between an abusive marriage and her family’s rigid traditions, Donya fled to her parents’ home.
According to her last writings, discovered after her death, her family confined her to a room and confiscated her phone.
Yet even then, her spirit remained unbroken. “Life is very difficult,” she wrote, “but I won’t stop fighting.”
Her determination would prove fatal.
Within days of seeking refuge at her parents’ home, Donya’s father, viewing divorce as an unforgivable social shame, took his daughter’s life.
“Everyone in her family blamed her for the divorce,” Rabiei explains. “In their patriarchal structure, like many traditional families, divorce is seen as a personal and social failure.
“She was severely threatened, not just for her personal choices, but for defying traditional, patriarchal family expectations. She was a victim of child marriage.”
Donya’s case adds to a growing list of similar tragedies in Iran, where hundreds of women have been killed by close male relatives - usually husbands or fathers - for seeking divorce after enduring forced marriages and domestic violence.
Zahra Asghari: Seven Knife Wounds in Front of Her Daughter’s Eyes
In January, four women - Zahra Shahbazi, GhazalehHodoudi, Zahra, and KowsarDarabi - were reported killed by men close to them.
Now, another name joins this grim statistic. According to information received by IranWire, on January 8, Zahra Asghari, a mother of two, was murdered with seven stab wounds to her chest by her husband.
Zahra’s husband had repeatedly been unfaithful during their marriage, and each time she attempted to file for divorce, he threatened to kill her.
PardisRabiei describes Zahra Asghari’s case: “This crime didn’t happen in private but in front of Zahra’s 14-year-old daughter. The husband even threatened to kill their daughter too.”
According to Rabiei, Zahra had repeatedly learned about her husband’s affairs with other women. Each time she packed her bags for divorce and sought refuge with her family, her husband lured her back with promises of a house and car.
Rabiei, who has publicized many femicides in Iran, told IranWire, “In a society where patriarchy is rooted in culture, law, and custom, women like Zahra are not only unprotected from domestic violence but become victims of a system that leaves them rightless and defenseless.”
According to IranWire’s investigations, at least 136 women have been killed by family members since March 2024.
