AHMEDABAD: For just 15,000 taka paid to a Bangladeshi agent, a woman illegally crossed into India and lived undetected for years before being arrested by Surat’s Special Operation Group (SOG) Police on Saturday.

The woman, identified as Rasida Begum Jahangir Ali Sheikh, entered India illegally four years ago. Initially residing in Mumbai for a year, she later settled in Surat, Gujarat, where she worked in various spas.

Using forged documents, Rasida obtained an Aadhaar card and other Indian identification to live and work undetected. During her arrest, the police also recovered a document identifying her as a Bangladeshi citizen.

“I paid 15,000 Bangladeshi Taka to an agent to cross into India,” she revealed during interrogation by Surat’s SOG. She detailed her journey, explaining how she entered India through West Bengal, travelled to Mumbai by train, and eventually moved to Surat, where she had been renting rooms at various locations for the past three years.

For just 15,000 taka paid to a Bangladeshi agent, a woman illegally crossed into India and lived undetected for years before being arrested by Surat’s Special Operation Group (SOG) Police on Saturday.

Interrogation further revealed that Rasida hails from Baranga village in Bangladesh. She used an agent to cross the restricted border near Jessore district, entering India through Bangon in West Bengal.

The incident forms part of a broader trend of illegal infiltration in Gujarat. Surat Police data, released three months ago, disclosed that the SOG apprehended 22 Bangladeshi nationals who had entered the industrial city illegally over the past year (2023–24).

In a similar crackdown last month, Ahmedabad police’s crime branch detained 48 illegal Bangladeshi nationals across various locations in the city, including eight women and six minors.

Investigators uncovered cases of human trafficking, with Bangladeshi women being brought into India and forced into prostitution. Additionally, they found a network involved in forging documents to create fake identities for the detainees.

The growing issue of cross-border infiltration and document forgery raises serious concerns about national security and exploitation in Gujarat.

Scolded by man for harassing girl, 2 brothers kill his nephew in Delhi's Nand Nagri

Nov 17, 2024

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man was murdered, allegedly by two brothers, after his uncle scolded them for harassing a girl in northeast Delhi's Nand Nagri on Friday.

DCP (northeast) Rakesh Paweriya said cops went to the spot after being informed that a person had been stabbed in the neck near a restaurant in Murga Market around 9.30pm.

Accused even beat up the girl: Victim's friend Manish's uncle, Krishan Kumar (38), told police that Salman and Arbaaz were harassing a girl in Sunder Nagri when he intervened, scolding the two and asking them to leave.

About half an hour later, he was told that they were quarrelling with his nephew, Manish. "When Kumar reached there, he saw Arbaaz holding Manish and Salman stabbing him with a sharp weapon on the right side of his neck. Manish was critically injured," police said. He later succumbed to his injuries.

His friend Aman said, "Manish was leaving the park after receiving a call from his wife when the duo, accompanied by a group of their associates, arrived and attacked him." He managed to escape and was rushed to a hospital. But the severe injuries caused excessive bleeding and he died later, said Aman.

He alleged that the accused brothers were not only harassing the girl but were also beating her, prompting Kumar to confront them. "Their father also came and threatened Manish's uncle," he claimed.

According to Aman, Manish was the sole breadwinner for his family of three: his wife, their four-year-old daughter and two-month-old son. "He used to assist his uncle in the cable operation business."

An officer said they were probing the role of the accused's father in the case. Efforts are also under way to locate the girl to record her statement. "Based on her testimony, we may consider adding further sections of BNS to the charges against the accused," said the officer. Police have recovered the weapons of offence.

The accused were earlier involved in attempted murder and snatching cases. The deceased himself was involved in four criminal cases, police said.

Highway horror: Woman’s body with injury marks found stuffed inside suitcase in Hapur

Nov 17, 2024

MEERUT: Body of an unidentified woman in her early 30s was found stuffed in a suitcase near the national highway-9 in Hapur on Saturday morning. Locals noticed a red suitcase abandoned on a service road close to ATMS College under HapurKotwali police station area and informed the police about it.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Vineet Bhatnagar said, "The body was in the suitcase along with some clothes. The woman, who was wearing a T-shirt and a lower garment, had some injury marks on her head and face."

"Except for toe rings, there was nothing which could help identify the body. A forensic team has been deployed for investigation," said the top officer. Police suspect the crime could have taken place anywhere in Delhi, Punjab or Haryana, as the highway is a fast-moving one and connects four states.

There are several unsolved cases of dumped bodies in the West Uttar Pradesh region. For instance, in May 2020, bodies of two women were found in the Jaganpura forested area of Shamli district. Even four years later, the case remains unsolved.

Similarly, in June 2021, the body of a woman in her early 20s was found stuffed in a car's trunk near Kali river in Meerut's Kharkhoda area. Again, the case remains unresolved till date.

17 Nov 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — The Court of Appeal will deliver its decision tomorrow on the prosecution’s appeal against the acquittal of Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and his wife Datin Seri Zizie Izette Abdul Samad from three corruption charges amounting to RM2.8 million.

The decision is expected to be announced by a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal consisting of Justices Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Mohamed Zaini Mazlan and Datuk NoorinBadaruddin at 9am.

If the decision favours the prosecution, the case will be sent back to the Sessions Court here for the couple to defend themselves against the charges and if the panel rules otherwise, the couple will remain acquitted.

On September 18, 2023, the prosecution filed an appeal against the decision of High Court Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid on September 7, 2023, which acquitted the couple of the charges.

The High Court made the decision after allowing the application by Bung Moktar, 65, and Zizie Izette, 46, to review the Sessions Court’s ruling on September 2, 2022, which ordered them to defend themselves against the charges.

According to the first charge, Bung Moktar, who was then the Non-Executive Chairman of FelcraBerhad, was accused of corruptly obtaining a bribe of RM2.2 million from Public Mutual Berhad investment agent, Madhi Abdul Hamid, through the accused’s wife, Zizie Izette.

He was alleged to have committed the act as an inducement to secure approval from the then Finance Minister II for Felcra to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual’s unit trust products.

The offence was allegedly committed at Public Bank Berhad, Taman Melawati Branch, No. 262-265, Jalan Bandar 12, Taman Melawati here, between 12.30pm and 5pm, on June 12, 2015.

For the second charge, Bung Moktar was accused of corruptly obtaining a bribe of RM262,500 from the same individual, Madhi, through a Public Islamic Treasures Growth Fund (PITGF) account registered under Zizie Izette’s name for the same purpose.

Bung Moktar was also accused of corruptly obtaining a bribe of RM337,500 from Public Mutual Berhad investment agent, Norhaili Ahmad Mokhtar, through a Public Ittikal Sequel Fund (PITSEQ) account registered under Zizie Izette’s name for the same purpose.

The charges were framed under Subsection 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (MACC Act) and are punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which provides for a prison term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Zizie Izette, who is also an actress, pleaded not guilty to three charges of abetting her husband in connection with the same matters at the same places, dates, and times, under Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act and punishable under Subsection 24(1) of the same Act, which carries a maximum prison term of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Famine in northern Gaza 'occurring or imminent', warn experts

Nov 16, 2024

UN Security Council on Tuesday received warnings from experts about famine being "occurring or imminent" in northern Gaza regions.

Israeli forces have maintained a siege in the north for approximately one month, ordering evacuations whilst attempting to encircle Hamas fighters allegedly present in the area.

During Tuesday's session, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield cited a November 8 alert from the UN-backed integrated phase classification (IPC) famine review committee, highlighting the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the strip.

"The IPC's latest report on the prospect of imminent famine underscores the urgency of the situation. And it makes clear that such a surge [of humanitarian aid] is critical," she said.

She further emphasised that Israel must not implement forcible displacement or starvation policies in Gaza, noting potential consequences under US and international law.

The IPC alert referenced previous analysis indicating 133,000 Gazans faced catastrophic food insecurity, with famine risk present across the strip between November 2024 and April 2025.

"Immediate action, within days not weeks, is required from all actors who are directly taking part in the conflict, or who have influence on its conduct, to avert and alleviate this catastrophic situation," the alert said.

UN world food programme executive director Cindy McCain responded on X, saying "the unacceptable is confirmed." She demanded "Immediate steps MUST BE TAKEN to allow safe, rapid and unimpeded flow of humanitarian and commercial supplies to prevent an all-out catastrophe. NOW."

Israel's UN ambassador Danny Danon dismissed the famine warning as "simply false" on Tuesday, outlining Israeli efforts to improve Gaza's humanitarian situation.

The Israeli government denies malnutrition conditions in Gaza, stating its cooperation with international organisations for aid delivery across the border.

COGAT reported 117 humanitarian aid trucks entered Gaza on Tuesday, including 32 to northern Gaza, plus a fuel tanker for essential infrastructure.

US secretary of state Antony Blinken addressed Israel's progress on the Biden administration's 30-day deadline for increased aid delivery to Gaza by November 12.

Blinken confirmed Israel's implementation or progress on 12 of 15 requested steps, whilst international aid agencies report no significant changes in safe passage conditions.

Since Hamas's October 7 attack and Israel's subsequent war declaration, the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health reports 43,712 Palestinian casualties and 103,258 injuries. Israeli officials confirm 1,700 Israeli deaths and approximately 8,700 injuries.

Sudan women sexually exploited in Chad camps

November 17, 2024

ADRE, Chad: Crossing into Chad, the 27-year-old thought she’d left the horrors of Sudan’s war behind: the bodies she ran over while fleeing, the screams of girls being raped, the disappearance of her husband when gunmen attacked. But now she says she has faced more suffering — being forced as a refugee to have sex to get by.

She cradled her 7-week-old son, who she asserted was the child of an aid worker who promised her money in exchange for sex.

“The children were crying. We ran out of food,” she said of her four other children. “He abused my situation.” She and other women who spoke to The Associated Press requested anonymity because they feared retribution.

Some Sudanese women and girls assert that men, including those meant to protect them such as humanitarian workers and local security forces, have sexually exploited them in Chad’s displacement sites, offering money, easier access to assistance and jobs. Such sexual exploitation in Chad is a crime.

Hundreds of thousands of people, most of them women, have streamed into Chad to escape Sudan’s civil war, which has killed over 20,000 people. Aid groups struggle to support them in growing displacement sites.

Three women spoke with the AP in the town of Adre near the Sudanese border. A Sudanese psychologist shared the accounts of seven other women and girls who either refused to speak directly with a reporter or were no longer in touch with her. The AP could not confirm their accounts.

Daral-Salam Omar, the psychologist, said all the seven told her they went along with the offers of benefits in exchange for sex out of necessity. Some sought her help because they became pregnant and couldn’t seek an abortion at a clinic for fear of being shunned by their community, she said.

“They were psychologically destroyed. Imagine a woman getting pregnant without a husband amid this situation,” Omar said.

Australia Strengthens Support For Afghanistan Women’s Cricket, But Issue Remains In Limbo

Nov 16, 2024

Australia has strengthened its support for Afghanistan women's cricket, but one of the sport's thorniest issues remains in limbo.

It was announced recently that an Afghanistan women's team, consisting of refugees who moved to Australia, will play a match in Melbourne in January. It will be the first time an Afghanistan's women's cricket team has taken to the field since the Taliban's bloody takeover in 2021.

Fearing their safety, women cricketers sought refuge overseas with most of the team fleeing to Australia. It effectively ended the fledgling development of women's cricket in the war-torn country.

The developments have polarized the International Cricket Council's board - where the power lies in the sport - and a working group was set up in late 2021, tasked with investigating the situation in Afghanistan.

The ICC has been increasingly under pressure to act and the situation heightened recently when members of the Afghanistan women’s cricket team issued a plea to re-form as a refugee side based in Australia.

After Afghanistan avoided ICC sanctions last year, the working group was set to be disbanded only to remain intact due to Australia and England taking human rights stances.

Forbes Daily: Join over 1 million Forbes Daily subscribers and get our best stories, exclusive reporting and essential analysis of the day’s news in your inbox every weekday.

Australia has publicly demonstrated its commitment by hosting a T20 match between an Afghanistan women's XI and a Cricket Without Borders XI on January 30 ahead of the women's Ashes Test at the MCG.

"Many people across cricket and the community have come together to provide support for members of the Afghanistan women's team since their relocation to Australia and this match will be a celebration of that work," Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said.

"I'm delighted that their ambition to play together will be achieved in this exhibition match which will be a wonderful addition to the many events around the day-night women's Ashes Test."

But this show of support is unlikely to move the needle at ICC board level. It is learnt that the issue remains at a stalemate despite pleas earlier in the year from the women refugees asking for assistance in setting up a team in Australia.

But it was learned that the high cost of Afghanistan's men's team was cited as a primary reason why funds couldn't be deducted from the ACB's distribution. Afghanistan do not play cricket at home due to security issues and have been mostly based in the UAE and India.

The inaction from the ICC board was a blow for Afghanistan's women refugees, who finally through all this heartbreak will momentarily rediscover the pride of representing their country on the cricket field.

Peter Butler outlines vision for growth of Bangladesh women’s football

Tahsin Irteza

16 November, 2024

Peter Butler, the former West Ham United midfielder and FA Cup finalist, has been at the helm of transformative change in Bangladesh women's football.

In March 2024, Butler was appointed as the temporary head coach of the national women's team while continuing his role at the BFF Elite Football Academy.

Following the conclusion of the 2023–24 Bangladesh Championship League, Butler was made the permanent head coach, stepping away from his duties at the Academy to focus solely on the national team.

His tenure coincided with a period of growth and success, culminating in Bangladesh's Saff Women's Championship victory in October..

In a conversation with The Business Standard at the Ascent Cup final—a prominent corporate football tournament held annually in Dhaka, where he was one of the Chief Guests—Butler spoke about the team's recent triumph, the challenges of progressing beyond South Asia, and the pressing need for domestic football development.

Bangladesh's dramatic 2–1 victory over Nepal in the Saff Women's Championship final was a testament to their resilience and growing potential.

Monika Chakma's early goal showcased the team's attacking intent, and though Nepal quickly equalised through Amisha, Rituporna Chakma's stunning late strike sealed the victory, sparking celebrations nationwide.

"Providing enough opportunities for the younger girls to move forward in their respective careers is crucial. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) needs to create a platform for these players to showcase their abilities and advance themselves, not just in football but also as human beings."

Butler pinpointed a lack of professional exposure as a key factor. "If you look around, you can't find any Bangladeshi players playing professional football abroad. That's a real concern," he noted.

He posed important questions: "Are they good enough? Are they mentally strong enough? Do they have the ability to embrace professionalism?" Butler believes addressing these challenges is essential to elevating the team's performance on the global stage.

If they remain focused, dedicate themselves, and are willing to make sacrifices, why not?" he said. "I strongly believe there are many good young players within the group who could succeed with the right grooming and correct coaching over time."

However, he acknowledged significant hurdles. "Physicality could be an issue, as well as mental focus, perspective, and discipline. These are big issues that need to be addressed for success abroad."

While stars like Ritu Porna and Monika Chakma garnered much of the attention during the Saff campaign, Butler emphasised the pivotal role played by Afeida Khandaker.

"She was the backbone of the team," Butler explained. "Her performances were absolutely superb—solid, dependable, and consistent throughout the tournament. She didn't get the recognition she truly deserved, but her contribution was invaluable to our success."

He stressed the importance of regular competition in nurturing talent. "A lot of young talents are coming through, but without a proper structure, their potential will remain untapped. I hope the BFF shows immediate concern on this subject."

Butler's journey from temporary coach to permanent head coach reflects his commitment to developing women's football in Bangladesh.

As a former FA Cup finalist who has witnessed football's highest levels, Butler brings invaluable experience and perspective to his role.

Under his guidance, Bangladesh's women's team stands poised to transition from regional dominance to a more competitive force on the global stage.
