Rajasthan Hindu Girl, Muslim Female
Teacher Traced To Chennai Amid 'Love Jihad' Buzz
Accused
teacher Nida Bahlim, family and kins protesting
------
Jul 6, 2023,
JAIPUR: A 17-year-old Rajasthan
schoolgirl reported missing for almost a week with a female teacher, 20, amid
turbulence in their small town over allegations of "love jihad" were
traced to Chennai on Wednesday, two days after a video emerged of the pair
professing their love for each other and appealing for peace.
Bikaner IGP Om Prakash told TOI that
police teams assigned to look for the missing teenager and her alleged partner
stayed in different cities since last week before landing in Chennai. The girl
will be brought to her hometown in the district and her statement recorded
before the police press charges, if any, on the teacher accused of kidnapping,
criminal conspiracy and forced marriage.
The parents of the Class 12 girl
reported her missing on July 1, a day after she left for school at 7.30am and
didn't return. Besides the teacher, the FIR names her two brothers as
conspirators in the alleged crime.
Sources said the family of the teacher,
too, had filed a "missing person report" at the same police station.
Several right-wing organisations claimed
the alleged interfaith relationship was a case of "love jihad". The
emergence of the video purportedly showing the duo declaring they were in a
relationship and wanted to spend their lives together stoked protests.
BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore backed the
protesters, alleging that the police were trying to hush up the suspected
kidnapping of a minor.
SP Tejaswani Gautam said a team had
reached Chennai to bring the teenager and the teacher back to Bikaner. TNN

Malay-Muslim woman models for Victoria's
Secret, sparks debate on social media
JULY 06, 2023
A Malaysian model has just become the
first Malay-Muslim to star in a Victoria's Secret advertising campaign, but not
everyone is happy about it.
Taking to Instagram on July 2, Nia
Atasha teased about modelling for the lingerie brand.
"I can't keep this a secret
anymore. Something exciting is coming really soon," the 26-year-old said.
In an interview with Malaysian media
outlet Eh!Malaysia, Nia shared her excitement of being a face of Victoria's
Secret.
"It's an honour. This is a big
opportunity and I've always had a dream since I started modelling [to be in an]
ad campaign for Victoria's Secret," she said.
"I'm still processing everything
and currently in pinch me mode. Teenage Nia wouldn't believe this," Nia
wrote in an Instagram post.
Several netizens let comments on her
post, congratulating the model for making history.
Others, however, were not too happy
about a Malay-Muslim modelling for a lingerie brand, reported Mashable.

public.
Meanwhile, several netizens urged those
"who have nothing good to say" to "keep quiet".

Amend Indian Succession Act before UCC:
Muslim women’s forum
06 July, 2023
KOZHIKODE, KERALA: A forward-thinking
forum of Muslim women called ‘NISA’ has proposed a modification to the Indian
Succession Act. Their aim is to strengthen gender equality and challenge the
influence of patriarchy.
The proposed amendment seeks to
establish a comprehensive and clear legal framework for the distribution of
assets among Muslims in India, aligning it with the equality provisions
outlined in the Indian Constitution.
The proposal comes at a time when the
discussion on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been taken up by various
political parties, with the Left, Congress and all Muslim organisations raising
strong objections to the proposed law by the central government.
In a submission to the Law Commission of
India, the forum stated that the need of the hour was the codification of all
Muslim personal laws by doing away with gender discrimination. NISA also
submitted a representation to the Kerala government.
The president of NISA, VP Zuhra, who has
been at the forefront of the fight against gender discrimination in Muslim
personal laws over the last many years, said that the Indian Succession Act,
Divorce Act, Guardians and Wards Act and Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection)
Act should be amended.
In a letter to the Law Commission of
India, the forum stated, “We are of the opinion that the Commission may not
embark on a plan of imposing the Hindu code on the minorities, forgetting the
fact that the Hindu women got equal treatment in the matter of property rights
as late as 2005, and that too in different stages. We instead propose to amend
the Indian Succession Act, 1925, to grant equal rights in the matter of
succession to property in line with the principles of constitutional morality
and equality.”
“We propose in this context to bring in
an amendment in the Indian Succession Act and confer Muslim women the same
rights available to Christian women and therefore suggest the commission extend
the application of the Indian Succession Act to Muslims and insert a new
chapter in the Indian Succession Act,” NISA stated in their letter to the Law
Commission.
Meanwhile, Muslim organisations,
including Jamaat E Islami, parties including the Muslim League and INL, have
not responded on the matter in particular in the present context, however, they
are opposed to the proposed Uniform Civil Code.
The Muslim League, which convened a
meeting on June 5, has, however, decided not to hold protests against the bill,
but to wait and watch the content of the bill once it is made public.
