American
Adult Film Actress, Whitney Wright, Sparks Controversy With Iran Trip
American adult film actress Whitney Wright
------
04-02-2024
Amidst
restrictions barring many Iranians and artists abroad from entering Iran, an
American adult film actress has ignited controversy by sharing photos of her
journey to Iran.
Wright,
known for her support of Palestine, posted images with captions expressing her
curiosity about Iran. The controversy began when she shared a story of herself
at Tehran's Golestan Palace, fully covered with Iran's mandatory hijab. Wright
had previously solicited recommendations from her followers for Tehran's best
foods and attractions.
Her
Instagram page also features photos from her recent trips to Lebanon and Egypt.
However, Wright's presence in Iran has sparked backlash from social media
users, questioning the ease of her entry considering Iran's strict principles
for women's morality and chastity.
Famous
actress SetraehPesyani voiced her opposition, criticizing authorities for
permitting Wright's visit while penalizing citizens for defying compulsory hijab.
Pesyani took to Instagram, stating, "You punish the people of this land
for hijab defiance, yet you allow a porn star to visit Iran for sightseeing?
What's happening here?"
Earlier
in January, Roya Heshmati, an Iranian woman, was subjected to 74 lashes for
violating the Islamic Republic's mandatory hijab law, while another woman who
refused to wear the hijab received a two-year prison sentence.
The
Iranian regime, surprised by women's unwavering resistance of the compulsory
hijab law, has been employing various tactics to dissuade them from removing
their hijabs in public, albeit with very little success.

UN
Experts: Arbitrary Detentions Of Women Must Stop In Afghanistan

February
3, 2024
In
this report, which was published on Friday, February 2nd, it is mentioned: “We
urge the Taliban to immediately lift the restrictions imposed on women’s dress
and halt the detention of girls on this pretext.”
These
experts, numbering around ten, have called on the Taliban government in
Afghanistan to uphold international human rights principles, including
eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, as Afghanistan is a
party to this convention.
The
report indicates that arbitrary detention of girls due to dress code violations
which began in early January, was mainly concentrated in the western Kabul
region which is predominately inhabited by Hazara residents and then continued
in other parts of the city, including Khair Khana, which is predominantly
inhabited by Tajik residents. The experts have also mentioned the detention of
girls in the provinces of Bamyan, Daikundi, Panjshir, Balkh, and Kunduz.
These
experts further added, “Women and girls detained were transferred to the police
stations where they received only one meal a day and continued to face physical
torture.”
The
recent report by UNAMA in the past two months of 2023 also indicates that there
is no responsive body to address gender-based violence in Afghanistan.
According
to UN experts, the Taliban regime has delegated the responsibility of women’s
clothing to men and threatens to punish men who do not enforce the veil, which
effectively erases women from society.
UN
experts also emphasize that since the re-establishment of the Taliban into
power, women’s lives have been significantly restricted, and they have been
excluded from public spaces. They argue that the Taliban must be held
accountable for their actions against women.

ECP
Action Sought Against Political Parties For Ignoring Women Quota
IkramJunaidi
February
4, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
As it is mandatory for every political party to field at least 5pc women
candidates on general seats in the National Assembly and four provincial
assemblies, Aurat Foundation has lodged a complaint with the Election
Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to take legal action against political parties
which have violated this clause.
The
parties which have been identified include Pakistan Peoples Party
Parliamentarians (PPPP), Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Awami National Party (ANP),
Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F),
Balochistan National Party (BNP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) name is not
mentioned as the party has been deprived of the symbol.
PPP
leader Farhatullah Babar categorically denied the allegation, claiming that the
PPP fielded more than 5pc of female candidates on general seats. He said even
in the 2018 elections, PPP fielded over 5pc candidates. “I doubt that other
parties have violated the condition of the ECP as every party has to submit a
certificate in the ECP that it has fielded more than 5pc women candidates,” he
said.
“A
majority of the political parties, in order to meet the condition of the ECP,
field women candidates on seats on which they cannot win. PPP is the only party
which has several female candidates who can win the general seats on their own.
They include Nafisa Shah, Azra Fazal Pechuho, Shazia Marri, Faryal Talpur and
others. Even Fahmida Mirza used to win on a general seat when she was in PPP,”
he said.
Mr
Babar said there was a need to start a debate that the winnable seats should be
given to women so that there would be more representation of women in
parliament. He said that, even after their nomination on reserved and minority
seats, women usually get 18 to 23pc of seats in the assemblies. PML-N
spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb could not be reached for her comment.
The
Aurat Foundation after reviewing at least eight political parties contesting
elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies presented a
bleak picture of women’s participation in elections.
In
the National Assembly, the analysis shows that PPPP, JI, ANP, TLP, JUI-F and
BNP have not met the requirement of awarding at least 5pc party tickets to
women on general seats. In the Punjab Assembly, the findings claimed that
PML-N, PPPP, JI, MQM and TLP have not met the requirement.
In
the Sindh Assembly, the findings claimed that the MQM, ANP and TLP did not meet
the requirement of awarding at least 5pc party tickets to women on general
seats. In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the findings claimed that PML-N,
MQM, JI and JUI-F had not met the requirement.
In
the Balochistan Assembly, the findings claimed that PML-N, MQM, PPP, ANP, TLP,
and JUI-F did not meet the requirement of awarding at least 5pc party tickets
to women on general seats.
It
may be noted that Section 206 of the Elections Act 2017 states that political
parties shall award at least 5pc general seat tickets to women in each
assembly. The punishment for violation of any provision of the Elections Act
2017 by the political parties is provided in Section 217 of the said law.
“...if
not complied with by the political parties, they cannot be given election
symbols, and cannot contest elections as a political party. It cannot be
presumed that political parties are not aware of this obligation for two
reasons: firstly, that all parties submit an affidavit to ECP that they have
allotted 5pc tickets to women and; secondly, because most of the mainstream
parties…fulfilled this requirement in General Election 2018,” the letter
stated.
“We
request the Election Commission of Pakistan to take notice of this violation…because
the 5pc restriction is already a low ceiling, and if parties continue to show
disregard to women in providing them opportunities to enter the mainstream, it
would mean denying half the population of their due fundamental rights under
the Constitution of Pakistan,” it stated.
Aurat
Foundation has lodged a complaint to ECP, requesting it to take cognisance of
the matter with immediate effect and take strict action under Section 217 and
other provisions of laws, against the political parties who have violated the
provision of the Election Act 2017 and the Code of Conduct for Political
Parties.

Feminists,
women lawyers lash out at Pakistan judge for hurting woman's dignity in
marriage case verdict
Feb
4, 2024
ISLAMABAD:
The controversial judgement in the 'un-Islamic marriage case' created a storm
with feminists and women lawyers lashing at the judge for violating the settled
principle of law on the issue and hurting the dignity of a woman by prying open
private affairs like 'mensuration'. Judge Quratullah issued the reserved
verdict on Saturday, sentencing ex-premier Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi
to seven years in jail and imposing a Rs 0.5 million fine on each for
"contracting marriage during the 'iddat' (period of waiting)" in a
case filed by Bibi's former husband Khawar Maneka in November last year.
The
first couple had married on January 1, 2018, and Maneka approached the court
about six years after the marriage, alleging that the two married without Bibi
completing her 'iddat' and that the two were also in an adulterous relationship
even before marriage.
The
71-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician has been held in jail since he
was arrested on August 5 last year after a conviction in the Toshakhna case.
The
judge set aside the nikah of January 1, 2018, by announcing the sentence under
Section 496 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which read: "Whoever, dishonestly
or with a fraudulent intention, goes through the ceremony of being married,
knowing that he is not thereby lawfully married, shall be punished with
imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years,
and shall be liable to fine."
According
to the court, the couple is still in a "legitimate relationship" as
the court ruled that their second nikah performed on February 14, 2018, was
legal.
Lawyer
and political commentator Reema Omer said that" from Maneka's statement
that his wife was "absolutely normal" in her menstruation to Judge
QudratUllah questioning whether "any sort of meeting in isolation" by
namehram (stranger) male and female is permissible in Islam - this judgment is
shameful and a travesty of justice, human rights".
Nighat
Dad, lawyer and feminist, in her comments, termed the verdict an
"appalling miscarriage of justice" and said that it "epitomises
the grotesque intrusion into women's private lives, stooping to the extent of
public humiliation. It is a brazen assault on women's autonomy, dignity, &
privacy, a dangerous precedent for state overreach into personal spheres".
She
said despite several amendments enacted in Pakistan to shield women from legal
abuse related to adultery and fornication if the state whimsically invokes
sections 496 & 496-B PPC, it renders women's protection merely illusory in
the face of arbitrary state power.
"This
egregious ruling echoes the dark history of the 1980s Zina Ordinance of Zia
era, highlighting how powerful entities can introduce & wield flawed laws
as weapons against individuals, brazenly trampling upon the constitutional
principles of dignity and privacy," she wrote on X.
Dad
went on to say that the judgment was not just about one woman but a chilling
glimpse into a future where thousands of women in this country could face
similar injustice based on this repugnant judgment.
MalekaBokhari,
lawyer and a former PTI leader said that it was a "dark and regressive
day" for the rights of women and girls across Pakistan because a former
first lady who lawfully divorced her former husband, and remarried has been
convicted in a weak case with the judge ignoring the law laid down in Supreme
Court judgments, dictates of shariah law and Federal Shariat court judgments.
"This
flawed judgment has set a bad precedent, opened floodgates and witch hunt
against women and girls by their former husbands. Women & feminists - I
hope this will be condemned unequivocally by all of us," she said in a
statement on X.
Another
women lawyer, Rida Tahir, the judgment violated the ruling of Justice Zia Ali
Bajwa of the Lahore High Court who held that re-marriage without observing the
period of iddah cannot be treated as a void marriage.
"Today's
judgement is a huge blow to women's human rights and opens the door for
maligning the character of women and turning them into social outcasts,"
she said on X.

Michelle
Roper, Of Grosvenor Street In Manningham, Stole Items Worth Almost £1k From
Mosque Food Bank
By
Rowan Newman
04-02-2024
Michelle
Roper, of Grosvenor Street in Manningham, stole a black handbag containing
cash, a purse and a Samsung 7 Edge phone at Almarkaz ul Islami mosque, Beckside
Road, on November 2, 2022.
The
items were to the value of £910.
The
53-year-old entered a guilty plea when she appeared at Bradford Magistrates
Court last Tuesday.
Roper's
niece Catelin is also charged with the same offence but was too unwell to
attend the court appearance.
The
court heard how the victim who worked at the food bank had left her handbag in
the staff room which Roper went on to steal.
Once
she noticed the bag had gone, leaders at the mosque searched the CCTV footage
and witnessed the burglary.
They
then proceeded to follow Roper to another female's house.
This
was when Roper flung several bank cards and the phone on the floor to them.
The
police were informed and, following a short foot chase, the pair were arrested.
The
prosecution in the case said Roper's actions had "some degree of
planning".
Roper's
defence said she was a regular visitor to the food bank and would often depend
on its services.
They
added that it was an "opportunist situation" and Roper now knows she
should not have done it.
Roper's
sentencing will take place at Bradford Magistrates Court on Wednesday, February
7.
