Muslim Woman Reunites with Hindu Husband after Four Weeks; Delhi HC Slams Police for Forcibly Separating Them

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has slammed Delhi Police for forcibly separating an interfaith couple despite knowing well that the Muslim woman is above 21 years and had married the Hindu man of her own free will.
A bench of Justice S Muralidhar and Justice Vinod Goel has sought an explanation from Delhi Police over allegations that they kept the husband in the police lock-up from 3 to 5 July without presenting him in any court.
The court order came while hearing a habeas corpus filed by the man who was seeking the wife's whereabouts.
The couple got married in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on 28 June, 2018, and then started residing at the man's residence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in New Delhi.
On 3 July, at around 8 pm, policemen accompanied by JNU security personnel and others in civilian clothes forcibly took away the woman and handed over the man to police, who was taken to Loni police station in Ghaziabad and kept in the lock-up for three days.
The man alleged that he was abused and beaten in custody and threatened he would be implicated in a false case of rape if he tried to reunite with his wife.
The police action came after a complaint was lodged at Loni police station by the woman's brother that his sister was missing.
The court has asked the police to explain how it proceeded to act on the complaint received from the woman's brother despite knowing that she was an adult and entitled to take her own decisions.
The bench met the young woman in the chamber. She told the judges that she had married the man of her own choice and the marriage was registered at Ghaziabad.
To ensure that there was no untoward or unpleasant incident hereafter, the court has directed the police to provide security to the couple as well as their family and listed the matter for further hearing on 7 August.
The bench spoke to the young woman's mother and explained to her that although she may have reservations about her daughter's marriage to someone from a different religion, the latter is entitled to make her choices as she was an adult.
The girl's mother told the court that it would be up to her daughter to decide what she wanted to do with her life.
As the young woman wished to return to her husband, the bench gave her the permission to unite with her husband who was also present in the courtroom.

IS Threatens To Murder Druze Women Hostages

A group of Syrian women - belonging to the minority Druze faith - held hostage by the Islamic State group face death, unless Damascus agrees to the demands of the militants, the hostages have warned in a video.
Photos have circulated on social media this week showing the images of 14 women held captive by IS following the militants' bloody assault on Druze villages in southern Syria last Wednesday.
More than 220 people - mostly civilians - were killed when IS militants stormed the Druze villages in Suweida and detonated suicide bomb belts in the provincial capital.
It is assumed that the women held captive by the militants were taken hostage during these raids, which were only ended after locals and Druze militias fought back the surprise IS assault.
In the images shared on social media, the women are seen wearing headscarves and standing in front of the banner used by IS.
A video released by IS on Saturday shows one woman pleading with the regime to do what they can to secure their freedom or the hostages will be killed.
"We call on Bashar Assad and Kinana Hweijeh to release Daesh [IS] prisoners of war and to halt the offensive launched on the Yarmouk [Valley] Basin," a woman who identifies as Swaad Adeeb Abo Ammar told the camera, according to Orient News.
"If they do not do what we ask, Daesh will kill us," she added.
Syrian regime officials are said to be in contact with IS to about the women, according to the opposition site.
Despite their pleas, the Assad regime have continued their offensive on the last IS enclaves in southern Syria.
Syrian regime militias captured a number of villages in the Yarmouk Valley areas over the weekend, while a new offensive was launched on an IS pocket of territory in the Syrian Desert that was believed to be the launch pad for the Suweida massacre.
The offensives brings fresh fears that the hostages could be murdered by IS in retaliation.
The loss of control of Suweida by IS has brought fresh criticism of the regime, due to the collapse of security in a province that was always susceptible to jihadi attacks.
Syria's Druze - an offshoot of Ismaili Islam - live mostly in remote Suweida province. Despite the relative calm in the province, there has been unease after the regime pulled security from the area and allowed IS militants from Damascus to vacate to a desert region bordering Suweida.
Some have suggested that the regime allowed IS to attack due to its anger over the Druze community's sense of neutrality and independence during the war.
Others have criticised the regime for concentrating its forces on offensives in Daraa province, leaving other parts of southern Syria unguarded.

Israel Bans Two Jerusalem Women from Praying At Al-Aqsa Mosque

JERUSALEM, July 30, 2018 (WAFA) – The Israeli police Monday informed two Palestinian women from occupied Jerusalem that they cannot enter Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City for two consecutive weeks.
WAFA correspondent said the Israeli police ordered Nafissa Khowais and Aida Sidawi not to enter the walled Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam’s third holiest site where they usually go to pray, or they will be arrested.
Khowais, 66, was interrogated on Sunday night about her presence and worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque before she was banned from entering it for two weeks.

‘Arab Girl’ a Living Symbol Of Emirati Women, Says Sheikha Fatima

ABU DHABI: H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), delivered a speech commemorating the late Emirati poet, Awsha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, “The Arab Girl,” who passed away on Friday and left a valuable collection of national and social poetry.
In her speech, which was published by a local newspaper, she said that the poetry of Al Suwaidi carried the hopes and aspirations of generations and expressed the pain and patience experienced during challenging times, while pointing out that she was a living symbol of Emirati women and their issues, including their social roles, education, employment and participation in building the country.
“With patient hearts, full of faith, accepting the rule of Allah Almighty, the UAE has lost one of its symbols, the poet, Awsha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, may she rest in peace,’’ Sheikha Fatima said of the poet.
“The Arab Girl,” whom we knew through her long journey witnessed by many generations, came from this land of giving. The poet, Awsha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, was a symbol of Emirati women.
“For over one hundred years, from her childhood until her later years, Al Suwaidi’s poems carried the hopes, aspirations, dreams and challenges of generations, and brought them hope about their future and encouraged them to achieve the impossible, which is an approach that was established by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the first to discover the poetic talents of Al Suwaidi.
“Al Suwaidi came from a generous and traditional family, and over a century she became the daughter of every family in the UAE and the Gulf. Anyone who read her poems has always wanted more. The Emirati poet has left a living poetic legacy for all Emiratis.
“Throughout her life, as in her poetry, Al Suwaidi was a living symbol of Emirati women and their issues, including their presence, role, education, employment and participation in building this country, which is a right acquired by Emirati women due to their qualifications, and the early awareness of the founders of this nation, who acknowledged that the nation cannot develop without the participation of everyone.
“Al Suwaidi inspired generations of women to pursue self-realisation. She also encouraged generations of men to overcome their difficulties and challenges. The UAE has lost, with her death, a spark that glowed since the beginning of the light and shone when the light prevailed. But she will always be in the minds of Emiratis.

King Fahd University Of Petroleum and Minerals Announces Academic Job Vacancies For Women

RIYADH: The King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals has announced new job vacancies for women who are PhD holders.
The announcement was carried by the public university in its official job vacancies notice which looks into recruiting men and women in academic positions.
The available job positions for female applicants are professor, associate professor, and assistant professor in several scientific fields.
The required fields include Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Engineering, Marketing, Management, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Management Information Systems, Engineering Management.
Female applicant must have all of her academic degrees by regularity, and with GPAs not less than 3 out of 4. The applicant must also be fluent in spoken and written English.

Indonesia, Iran Sign Agreement on Women and Children Protection

Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Susana Yembise and Iranian Women and Family Affairs Vice President Masoumeh Ebtekar signed on Monday an agreement for women’s empowerment, child protection and family resilience.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was the result of previous meetings between the two leaders in May this year and April last year.
Through the MoU, the two governments are committed to establishing a number of family resilience programs, as well as intensifying efforts to protect women and children from all forms of violence and harassment, and to involve women in politics and economy.
Yohana said the MoU was important to showcase Indonesia-Iran relations, especially on child protection and women's empowerment.
"This is especially for women who actively participate in achieving the millennium development goals.”
Yohana added that Indonesia had three priorities stated in the MoU: ending violence against women and children, ending human trafficking and ending economic barriers against women.
Meanwhile, Ebtekar said the protection of girls was a particular concern to Iran, noting the recent policy by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that requires 30 percent of government positions to be filled by women, providing future leadership training in every ministry and government institution.
Both parties agreed to immediately implement the programs.
On Sunday, Yohana gave a keynote speech at a seminar on women’s empowerment held by the Iranian Ministry of Information and Communications Technology in cooperation with the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs.
