Iran
on Thursday arrested a reporter who covered the funeral of Mahsa Amini, her
lawyer said, the latest of a growing number of journalists to be detained since
protests erupted over the young woman’s death.
Elahe
Mohammadi was summoned by the judicial authorities but was then arrested by
security forces while she was on her way to questioning, her lawyer Mohammad
Ali Kamfirouzi wrote on Twitter.
Mohammadi
had covered for Iran’s Ham Mihan newspaper the funeral of Amini, 22, who had
spent three days in a coma following her arrest by Tehran's notorious morality
police and died on September 16.
The
funeral in Amini’s home town of Saqqez in Kurdistan province was one of the
sparks that ignited the protest movement, with mourners shouting their slogans
and mourners removing their headscarves in defiance of the Islamic republic’s
dress rules.
Last
week, security forces had already raided Mohammadi's home in Tehran, her lawyer
said. Her husband wrote on Twitter that she had said in a short phone call she
was being held in Tehran’s Evin prison and had not been informed of any
charges.
Her
arrest comes after police detained journalist Nilufar Hamedi of the Shargh
daily, who went to the hospital where Amini lay in a coma and helped expose the
case to the world.
Hamedi
remains under arrest, also in Tehran’s Evin prison, and her husband has said
she is not aware of the charges against her.
Rights
groups accuse Iran of carrying out a major round-up of critical journalists
still inside the country, targeting especially those who have covered the case
of Amini. Internet access is also severely restricted.
Activists
say Amini was killed as a result of blows to the head sustained in detention
but this has not been confirmed by the authorities.
The
Washington-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says at least 25
journalists have been arrested since the protests erupted.
“Iranian
security forces must drop their repressive measures against the journalists telling
this critical story and restore the internet access that is vital to keep the
public informed,” said CPJ Middle East Coordinator, Sherif Mansour.
Also
held is photojournalist Yalda Moaiery, who won international recognition for an
iconic 2019 photo of protests and is imprisoned in the Qarchak women’s prison
outside Tehran which is notorious for its conditions.
She
was arrested on September 19 while covering a protest in Tehran, the CPJ said.
Paris-based
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said that according to its information at least
33 journalists are currently imprisoned in Iran.
“Iranian
journalists are facing a new wave of restrictions,” it said.

ABU
DHABI: The first female boxing world title fight to be held in Abu Dhabi will
see American Jessica McCaskill taking on Britain’s Chantelle Cameron at Etihad
Arena on Yas Island for the undisputed super-lightweight world title on Nov. 5.
McCaskill,
the reigning undisputed welterweight champion, will square off against WBC/IBF
light-welterweight title holder Cameron after the former dropped down in weight
to enhance her pound-for-pound credentials.
Organized
by Matchroom Boxing and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, the
mega-bout is part of the Champions Series inaugural fight card, which is
headlined by Russian star Dmitry Bivol’s WBA light-heavyweight title defense
against Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez.
Undefeated
Cameron (15-0, 8 KOs), often known as Il Capo, has held the WBC Women’s
Light-Welterweight Championship since 2020, and previously won world
championships in two weight classes.
She
successfully defended her title in May against Victoria Noelia Bustos, a
previous world champion, in London.
McCaskill
(12-2, 5 KOs), nicknamed CasKILLA, recently defeated Mexico’s Alma Ibarra to
complete her third successful defense of the welterweight title.
The
Missouri veteran made the decision to once more shift down a division to 140
lbs to secure the fight with Cameron that she has long been gunning for.
“This
is a historic encounter not just for the careers of the two fighters, but also
for the sport of boxing in the Middle East,” said Eddie Hearn, chairman of
Matchroom Sport.
“To
have two of the game’s best female fighters facing off in Abu Dhabi for the
undisputed super-lightweight world title is the perfect way to show the world
that Matchroom and DCT Abu Dhabi mean business with this partnership.
“We
are making history on Nov. 5 and looking forward to doing so in front of a
sold-out Etihad Arena.”

Eligible to Apply For Post of Tehsildar, Declares Balochistan High Court

QUETTA:
The Balochistan High Court on Thursday ruled that female candidates could not
be barred from applying for the posts of Tehsildar and naib Tehsildar.
“The
condition whereby only male candidates were declared eligible and females were
barred [from applying] for the post of ‘Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar’ by the
Balochistan Public Service Commission is illegal and unconstitutional,”
declared a division bench of the BHC, directing the provincial government to
fix five per cent quota for female candidates.
The
verdict was announced by a division bench of the BHC comprising Justice Hashim
Khan Kakar and Justice Gul Hassan Tareen.
The
petition was filed by Nargis Samalani against the Revenue Department’s
advertisement for the posts of Tehsildar and naib Tehsildar inviting
applications only from male candidates.
The
petitioner requested the court to declare any such rule and provision void and
unconstitutional. She also requested the court to direct the provincial
government to fix a quota for female candidates for these posts and also allow
them to compete for the same posts on merit.
“The
logical reason for non-eligibility of female candidates for the post of
tehsildar does not attract a prudent mind for the simple reason that a number
of females are working as superintendent of police, SHO, assistant
commissioners, judges, secretaries and ministers,” the petition said.
After
hearing the arguments, Justice Hashim Khan Kakar ruled that the impugned condition
was tantamount to discrimination which was not permissible under the
Constitution and went against the mandate of equality and safeguard against
discrimination in service.
“The
Balochistan government should re-advertise the posts of tehsildar and naib
tehsildar and ensure that a five per cent quota only for female candidates is
reserved,” the verdict said, adding that besides the reserved quota, the female
candidates are also eligible to contest the posts on a merit basis.
“The
vacancies reserved for the women for which qualified candidates are not
available shall be carried forward and filled by women later on,” the verdict
said.
In
its judgment, the court also asked the government to take immediate steps to
strengthen the office of the Commission on the Status of Women to eliminate all
forms of discrimination in the existing laws.

Two
women elected as Kuwait opposition wins majority in parliament

Women
returned to Kuwait's national assembly on Thursday as the opposition won a
majority in the Gulf's only fully elected parliament, which held its sixth
election in a decade.
Twenty-eight
of the 50 seats were won by opposition candidates as 20 former MPs were ousted,
including three former ministers.
Kuwait,
which borders Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran and is one of the world's biggest oil
exporters, has held 18 elections since the parliamentary system was adopted in
1962, reflecting its frequent political crises.
Victories
for former minister Jenan Bushehri and Alia al-Khaled ensured a female presence
in parliament after an all-male assembly was elected in 2020. Kuwait has never
had more than four women MPs.
Two
candidates won from prison, a first for Kuwait, after they were charged with
participating in illegal by-elections.
Hamid
Mehri al-Badhali and Marzouq al-Khalifa were eligible to stand for election
because their case does not affect honesty or honor, as per Kuwaiti law.
Ahmed
Saadoun, the 87-year-old former speaker, returns to parliament after a
decade-long boycott, having attracted more than 12,000 votes.
Several
opposition groups ended their boycott of the polls after Crown Prince Sheikh
Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah vowed there would be no interference by
authorities in the election or the new parliament.
Many
opposition figures have stayed out of elections over the past 10 years,
accusing executive authorities of meddling in the workings of parliament.

Muslim Mahila Andolan Seeks Ban On Polygamy, Halala

At
a press conference on Saturday, Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), a Muslim
women's rights group, said that it will be reviving its demand for a ban on
polygamy and halala that were not taken up by the Supreme Court while deciding
their plea on the ban on Triple Talaq.
The
group was party to the Triple Talaq judgement given by the Supreme Court that
banned the practise of instant triple talaq. The group also demanded the
codification of Muslim personal law and that the marriage age in the community
be as per the Prevention of Child Marriage Act (PCMA). The press conference was
held at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh and was attended by Tushar Gandhi and
volunteers of the BMMA.
"We
will revive the demand to ban polygamy and halala, which were not dealt with by
the Supreme Court while dealing with Triple Talaq in our petition. We will
approach the court to take up the same petition. If they want us to file a
fresh one, we will do that too. If polygamy cannot be banned, we demand that
section 494 of the IPC be applicable to Muslims and PCMA on marriage age. A
comprehensive codification of Muslim Personal law is our first demand,"
said Noorjehan Safia Niaz, co-founder of BMMA.
Section
494 of the IPC makes marriage with another person while already married a
punishable crime. Halala is a practise where a woman has to consummate her
marriage with another man if she wants to get back to her husband from an
earlier marriage post-divorce. "When instances of underage marriage are
taken to the police, they turn us away, saying that it is allowed as per our
personal law. We want a categorical mention in PCMA that Muslims are also
covered to stop underage marriages," said Noorjehan.
Volunteers
said that underage marriage was leading to health complications for girls
themselves and their children that they were not adept at handling. Polygamy,
on the other hand, was leading to depression and feelings of committing
suicide, which in turn affected the upbringing of children.
"I
was 14 when I got married off. When my husband died, since I was educated only
till the seventh standard, there were a lot of problems in bringing up my
children," said Nargis Tariq from Vasai, emphasising the need for
education before marriage. "Men often cheat for second marriages. Neither
the first nor the second wife is aware of his existing marriage status. In such
cases, women get depressed and some even feel like committing suicide,"
said Sana Patel, an activist.
The
group said that, as per a survey done by them in 2015, nearly 92 percent did
not want their husband to remarry and 75 percent wanted girls to be over 18 for
marriage. On voices that the community is already being targeted for its
practices, Noorjehan said, "We will raise issues with whichever government
listens to us. In a democratic structure, we have to go to parliament. It is
their job to make laws. We will approach parliament no matter who is in power.
Both sides have exploited the community. When every other religious law is
codified, why should that not be the case with Muslims? It is about the dignity
of women that is guaranteed under the Constitution and Quran."
Holding
placards of right to childhood and codification of a constitutional right,
women sought that misinformation about religious laws needed to be countered.
"Misinformation was spread that Muslim men would be thrown in jail if an
instant Triple Talaq law was made. What has instead happened is that people now
fear, and even Qazis fear, annulling marriages in that way. Now when we go
around, the instances have dropped," said Khatoon Shaikh, BMMA Maharashtra
president.
"I have come here to support my sisters.
They have a right to choose how to live their lives and what to wear,"
said Tushar Gandhi.

Airlines helps world's tallest woman fly for first time

With
a small seating adjustment, Rumeysa Gelgi finally boarded a plane for the first
time in her life. It was not an easy path, but the tallest woman in the world
made her very first trip by plane with the help of Turkish Airlines.
Gelgi,
who is in the Guinness Book of Records for her 2.15-meter (about 7-foot)
height, was able to make the journey after Türkiye’s flagship airline turned
six seats on the plane into stretchers. Gelgi has to travel by stretcher due to
Weaver syndrome, a genetic disorder characterized by rapid growth. She normally
gets around by wheelchair but sometimes walks for short distances. The
25-year-old software developer wanted to travel to the U.S. to collaborate with
Guinness for an event and to help develop her professional career. Accompanied
by her mother, the young woman boarded the flight with her wheelchair before
laying on the stretcher inside the plane for a 13-hour flight to San Francisco.
She
told reporters at Istanbul Airport that she was very excited to travel by plane
for the first time, and that this flight was important for patients like her
who need a stretcher. "This will be my first flight as well as my first
travel overseas. But I believe that this experience will be a first for many
individuals, not just me. Because as you know, the option of traveling as a
stretcher passenger is generally reserved for patients who are being
transferred from one intensive care unit to another. "It is an alternative
for patients who are referred from one hospital to another and need an
ambulance. However, because I couldn't sit for lengthy periods of time due to
my scoliosis, or spine curvature disorder, I had to fly on a stretcher,"
she said.
Gelgi
lives in Karabük, Türkiye, about 200 kilometers (124 miles) north of the
capital, Ankara. She says she is using her world record title to advocate and
raise awareness of both Weaver syndrome and scoliosis. The world’s tallest man
also lives in Türkiye: Sultan Kosen, who has been measured at 2.51 meters (8
feet 2.8 inches) tall.
