Peshawar Mosque Suicide Attack

-----

Another suicide attack on a mosque in Pakistan claimed at least 61 innocent lives while more than 150 people, mostly security personnel and their relatives and family members.

The terrorist managed to get to the first row of devotees in the afternoon prayer (zuhr) and blew himself up at 1:40 P.M. There were 300 people in the mosque offering prayer. The impact of the blast was so huge that one portion of the mosque collapsed and many people were buried under the rubble. The dead bodies of the victims were scattered everywhere.

The mosque is located in a high-security red zone where the offices of eight security agencies and the governor's house are located and 2000 policemen man the zone every day. The area known as police lines also houses residential quarters of security personnel and their families. Apart from the main gate, there are four check posts through which the people have to pass. The terrorist passed through all the check posts without being identified. The canteen building adjacent to the mosque also collapsed.

This is obviously a security lapse. According to the Pakistani media, the responsibility for the attack has been owned by a faction of the TTP while the spokesperson of the TTP has denied any involvement in the massacre. The Mohmund chapter of TTP has said it avenged the killing of its leader Khalid Umar Khorasani by Pakistan.

Urdu daily Ummat, in its editorial, claims that ISIS has owned up the responsibility for the suicide attack. But indirectly it has hinted at the involvement of TTP in the attack. Here is an excerpt from the editorial:

"ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack. The members of this outfit are in touch with anti-Pakistan forces and it is not a secret now. Only the last week, the senior Ulama of Pakistan had appealed to the TTP to stop armed resistance against Pakistan saying that Pakistan was an Islamic state and therefore, taking up arms against it was haram. In an audio message, the Mufti-e-Azam of Pakistan Mufti Taqi Usmani reminded the terrorist elements using Islam of their promise that they would not take up arms against Pakistan in future. Moreover, he also mentioned attacks on mosques and innocent citizens carried out by them. He had said that there was no room for terrorism in Islam. But it appears that the people running TTP do not follow Islam nor do they heed the fatwas or advice given by the Ulama whom they claimed as their teachers in the past only to mislead people. Islam preaches respect to the places of worship even those of the non-Muslims but the people claiming to be Muslims martyred innocent civilians in a mosque when they were standing before God offering prayers. Which religion do these mischief makers follow?"

It should be noted here that the daily Ummat has been a staunch supporter of the Taliban and in one of its features in 2021, it had predicted that the Taliban would now wage jihad in Kashmir. That's why it has given a clean chit to the TTP in the Peshawar attack and has claimed that ISIS was involved. Actually, the TTP is a joint platform of like-minded terrorist organisations, that is, Al Qaida, ISIS etc.

Almost all the Urdu newspapers have reported the attack but have not written any editorial naming TTP or Taliban and criticising them for causing death and destruction in Pakistan. The TTP carried out an attack in Islamabad in January and has been carrying out attacks in Khaibar Pakhtunkhwa on a daily basis. A Taliban leader had threatened Pakistan with 1971-like damage to Pakistan, alluding to the separation of East Pakistan.

The Ulama and religious organisations have not made any statement condemning the attack. Only Maulana Fazlur Rahman of Jamiat Ulema-e- Pakistan has formally condemned it but it can be seen as a political statement. Jamat-e-Islami Amir Sirajul Haque's statement was not seen in any prominent newspaper in Pakistan. He was busy addressing a delegation at Hurriyat Conference on Monday. His organisation's official position is that the Taliban is not a terrorist organisation and TTP is only a Pakistani wing of the Taliban. Perhaps they fear that they would meet the same fate as Maulana Raghib Nayeemi if they criticised the Taliban or TTP. Now, they are the target of the monster they created out of their takfiri ideology.

The Peshawar suicide attack was not the only terror operation in Pakistan on Monday. Two or three other terrorist attacks also took place in Pakistan on the same day. In the Swabi town of Khaiber Pakhtunkhwa, two TTP terrorists blew themselves up in an encounter with the police. In Kalachi tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan, two TTP terrorists were killed by the police.

Dr Tahirul Qadri, one of the prominent exegetes and scholars of Islam has also been silent over the terrorist attacks by the TTP. The politicians have made formal statements expressing their resolve to fight terrorism and terrorists not showing courage to name, TTP, Taliban or ISIS.

The magnitude and execution of the Peshawar hint at a foolproof plan and it could not have been possible without the connivance of the security agencies and the police. The explosives that blew up the two-storey building and the adjacent canteen couldn't be concealed by a person on his body. The terrorist knew of the security check posts.

In Peshawar, the TTP attacked an army school in 2014, killing more than 150 people, mostly children. To them, Peshawar is a soft target. In Islamabad, their attempt had failed and they had blown themselves up.

Three terrorist attacks in a single day in Pakistan on 30 January 2023 is only a prelude to the bloodshed and anarchy Pakistan is going to witness in near future. While the terrorist organisations will keep attacking mosques and killing innocent people, the media, the politicians and the religious organisations will keep playing the blame game. The monster of extremism and terrorism they created out of their hatred of India is now out of their control.
