Courage to Defend Core Values Defines a Nation

By Rashid Samnakay, New Age Islam

09 February 2017

Just as the nature’s law which Newton simply articulated as ‘every action has an equal and opposite reaction” does not mean that the reaction is unqualified and always “good and beneficial” to the performer or to whom it is performed for, similarly the Core Values of a nation do not necessarily mean that those values are universally beneficial to it or of benefit to the other nations that interact with it on this planet.

In Quranic terms, therefore every action- A’mal is required to be qualified as Saleh- to produce goodly and beneficial reaction. There is nothing in it extraordinary and nothing religious, just a statement of universal truism.

However it is generally assumed that a nation’s core values are of qualified goodly nature and that they are the ones which makes it ‘assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station’ (American Declaration of Independence) which then defines the nation’s place in the world.

This was demonstrably presented to the world recently by the Speaker of the British House of Commons who expressed his opposition to the potentiality of the newly elected President of the United States of America addressing the House of Commons on his State visit to the United Kingdom. His objection was on the basis of the President’s policy seen as being contrary to British core values and that ‘he would refuse to invite the US president to speak at Westminster because of parliament’s long held opposition to “racism and to sexism”’.

Not everybody in the Parliament and outside agreed with his action, though that is not the issue; for there never is an example in the world where such unilateral and individual’s actions are accepted by everybodyایسا بھی ہے کوئی سبھی اچھا کہیں جسے is there anyone that all would consider as good?

The disagreement was on procedural matters that the Speaker of House of Lords, as an equal partner of the two houses was not consulted and a joint statement was not agreed upon. That said, it is interesting to note the following comment by the Speaker of the House of Lords:

“However, the Speaker (of the House of Commons) contacted me this morning. He told me that while he maintained his view on the issue he was generally sorry for failing to consult with me. Obviously, I accepted that apology” ……and went on to say “Allow me to say that I have spent the last 30 years campaigning against prejudice and discrimination, particularly for the rights of LGBT people and those with HIV/Aids,…”. So it seems that he too agrees with the Speaker’s core values.

The history of British political system involving the Crown, House of Lords and House of Commons is amazing and colourful, going back to sixteenth century. The ceremony of the session of Parliament’s opening by the Monarch, the Queen is seen today the world over in its full colour, pomp and glamour. Yet one aspect of the ritual of the ceremony is not appreciated by many. On the monarch’s arrival to the House of Lords, the officer of the ‘Black Rod’ is sent to summon the House of Commons but the door is shut in his face. The officer knocks on the door three times with his rod. It is then the door is opened and the members including the Speaker march to the Lords to attend and listen to the Monarch’s speech, which is written by the Government of the day for her to deliver.

Though the power of the monarchy is largely symbolic, yet any head of State visiting the UK is supposed to be at the invitation of the Queen as the head of State and Defender of the faith of the United Kingdom. Yet the independence of the house is well and truly symbolized in this ceremony. It is the Speakers of both the houses who invite the visiting dignitary to address them!

One must then assume that the invitation is extended on the basis that the nation’s core values as represented by the visiting dignitary are synchronized with the British nation’s as represented by the parliament. This is hotly debated though.

In this case the speakers of both houses of British parliament seem to have agreed what those core values are and so: “…our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.”

This sentiment is also echoed in the UK by over a million people so far, signing a petition against the US President’s proposed visit. Democracy in its true colour in action to their credit, at home!

There have been similar expressions however of ‘people power’ against US President’s visit. One vaguely remembers the cancellation of President Dwight Eisenhower’s planned visit to Japan due to protest against his visit there. The protest perhaps was against nuclear bombs that the US was piling up as arsenal of war and Japan’s core value of opposing it, having experienced two such bombs dropped on its cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki!.

Aside from protesting against planned visits by head of states, many nations in the Far East also have shown the courage to resist their corrupt and inapt governments and have brought them down, against heavy odds.

There was some hope that the Muslim majority nations would show some signs of awakening when tremendous courage was shown by the Iranians when they sent packing the most powerful emperor of recent times in their revolution of change, not once but twice; for he was restored to the throne by the Super power custodian of democracy, after the first ousting.

After a long pause lasting over decades a similar seed of change germinated in the so called Arab Spring in the Middle East only a few years back, culminating in the overthrow of an Egyptian pharaoh - Mubarak, always supported by the same super power. Alas, that seedling was soon crushed by his political and military offspring!

Democracy, by the Muslim leaders and the custodians of democracy it seems: is not considered suitable for them, even if it was overwhelmingly voted in. So the pharaoh’s political offspring was installed in power and is there today:  زاغوں کے تصوف میں ہیں عقابوں کے نشیمن  Eagles’ nests are in use of the crows!

Their streets are adorned with portraits of head of States that are invited to visit even if that visitor is less than welcome in other countries of the world because of what they are perceived as representing in values. But the expectation of handouts and assurances of protection of ruling class’s thrones becomes paramount consideration.

The Muslim majority countries and the so called Islamic Republics in particular are a prime example of neglect of their duty in following their Book with regards to ruling a country, in spite of their claim they believe in it as being the Book annunciating their Core Values.

Hence the Muslim nations now are defined by other than universal core values and the lack of courage to defend them. The earthly gods have forsaken them as has the Creator of the universe:

6-117- The Lord knows best who has strayed from His ways…!

  • To Abdulla: Thanks for your certificate of fake.
    By Aayina - 2/23/2017 8:19:20 AM

  • Aayina: You are a fake person, so your name, Aayina, is a misfit that talks of reality and reflects the true things. The fanatic Hindus like Modi and Shah are just morons who talk of Qabristan, Shamshan and Kasab only. You are also one of them. You are here just to abuse the Muslims whereas your thought is full of hatred, communal feelings and extremism only.
    By Abdullah - 2/22/2017 10:54:59 PM

  • To Abdulla
Your source if relation with fellow humans is based on text which you completely obey if Quran calls non-Muslim, Kafir and Mushrikin and your words " Spare the Muslims ......It is my belive."   let it be that that is what we all Hindus need to know, that is the reason I am on this website, to wake up my Hindu Brothers and sisters.
Quran is telling, you to hate, that is conclusion I think so.
I am less intrested in politics, I am also less intrested in hate and fear ploitics, but your complain about Modi or Hindu extremist, hating Muslim or giving trouble, the source of this thought exactly come from your thought and mindset you have just expressed.
Even God will get equal amount of hate back from humans if he/she/!  does. I am not here on earth of his fun play of earth and heaven, that is the reason I keep my name Aayina, you, God or anybody will, get exactly in mirror what you give, theory of karma.
If I get chance I will kill Alllah first than humans, he thought between fellow humans how to hate.
Thanks for being honest like Zakir Naik, but you should accept  equivalent version of hatred from other relgions against Islam and Muslim, if your stance of hatred is based on belife on your book.
I do not know why you are finding the answer for hate of Muslims from people like Modi or Trump, your comment is very clear, how people look at you as well, because they have same wright as you have.
We Hindus have worlds like Rakshash, Daityas and many more which we can throw upon Muslims to hate and kill but atleast we Hindus have moved away from it, but who know Quran( so do Muslims ) constant hatred will make some day extremist Hindus( orthodox are every ready for this type of version ) to rejuvenate this word.

  • The decision to accept blood money or to reject any offer is for the close family of the person killed to decide. It is not fixed by law.

    By Naseer Ahmed - 2/20/2017 9:37:18 PM

  • When overall context on this subject is looked at, the significance of “clean/unclean” is seen as not specifically the cleanliness or otherwise of the body or clothes of the person attending a public gathering or entering a place but the mental and spiritual enlightenment and cleanliness, that is, belief/unbelief of the person entering such an institution – Gods house, not the physical windowless “dark hole” that is, of mental/vision uncleanliness.

Quran does not stop an enlightened mature menstruating woman entering a mosque but does prevent a person with “befogged/clouded” mind!

The Church cannot see beyond physical tangible ideas.

  • the blood money for a kuffar is less than the blood money for the momeen. it is less for a muslima than for a muslim.

    this is also hate mongering.

    By hats off! - 2/20/2017 6:34:22 PM

  • Hats Off would rather quote 9;28 than 2:256 or 109:6:

"There is no compulsion in religion.". . . . "For you your religion, and for me my religion."

    By Ghulam Mohiyuddin - 2/20/2017 12:18:09 PM

  • The triliteral root nūn jīm sīn (ن ج س) occurs only once in the Quran, as the noun najas (نَجَس) in verse 9:28. “Taharat” is the opposite of “najasat,” and it means cleanliness and purity. A Muslim who does not perform Taharat or wash himself when washing is prescribed will also be considered najis until he performs Taharat for his body and his clothes. The polytheists were banned only from the Kaba and not from any other mosque. This may have had more to do with their practices in Kaba which were considered unclean and sought to be put an end to rather than with anything else. The polytheists are not considered inherently najis since they are not banned from entering any other mosque. The comparison with what is inherently considered najis is therefore incorrect and simply hate-mongering.

  • the Holy Qur'an does not "hate" mushrik.

it merely declares them "najis" or impure. (the Holy Qur'an 9:28)

other examples of "najis" items are feces, urine, menstrual blood etc. the mushrik belong right next to these other "impure" items.

    By hats off! - 2/20/2017 3:37:52 AM

  • There is no verse of the Quran that expresses hatred for the mushrikin.

    By Naseer Ahmed - 2/19/2017 10:09:21 PM

  • Aayina: I am sorry if hurt you by sharing the article exposing the criminal conspiracy of the communal parties in Godhra, simply to kill the Muslims and polarize the Hindu votes, to win the assembly elections in 2002. The same communal game the Hindu extremist group played in Muzaffarnagar, Kairana etc which can very well be understood by Mr. Modi’s statement today while playing the communal cards as he sees the inevitable defeat , “ Kabristan banao to shamshan bhi banao” and “Ramzan men light do to Diwali men bhi do”.

How stupid his statement is, you should also admit it, as everybody in North India knows the conditions of electric supply in Ramzan at the time of Sehri and iftar. On the other hand, 24-hours electricity is provided in every city during Durga Puja and Diwali. You must admit the divide and rule policy of communal parties.

Recently a prominent person of Gujarat said that if they had not conducted fake encounters, Modi would not become prime minister. What have you to say upon this?

You have got every right to love or hate any book, religion, ideology, faith etc, but you have no right to poke your nose in other ’s matters, It is better you mind your own business and do whatever your ideological books or granths command you or do whatever you like to do.

You asked, “Mr Abdulla better you answer why Quran is showing to much hatred mushrikin”, this is the question many Non-Muslim commentators have asked before, but they don’t know, it is the verse of Qur’an revealed by Allah and He only can answer this question. You better wait a little bit, and ask this question to Allah.

Please spare the Muslims, let them believe and follow whatever their book commands them. If Qur’an says, the Non-Muslims are Mushrekoon and Kafiroon, they are. It is my believe.
    By Abdullah - 2/19/2017 11:21:01 AM

  • To Abdullah.
Rather than condemning what Muslim did in Ghodhra you are trying to creat Consperisay theory.
So Questions why Muslims of godhra join then BJP to creat to creat the plot.

It does not matter whatever you call to me or Hatts of it not going to change narrative written by your Muslim historian in regards to Hindu.

Mr Abdulla better you answer why  Quran is showing to much hatered mushrikin.

I am not hating you or even your Quran, I am seeing myself from your book( forget for time being about history of King), where I am standing, is it I have to be ready to oppressed, when Muslims gets more power or we have to finish ourselves before you guys rape( that what slave non-Muslims had to be treated Pakistani mullas explain better) or we have to be ready to fight.

You Indian Muslims are not going to help in time of civil war that is sure.

If Quran is telling to hate non-Muslims, than that is the way of praying, I think you might not be ashamed of it, I will fully support that ideas of hateing but I would like to do same. That is why I am Aayina, a mirror in every sense.

If you cannot condem your book the only choice is to follow, I am sure you and Muslims cannot follow Ghandhi or Raja Harishchandra who will use non-violence, to change the hearts of Hindu, you will use your book to justify the use of sord.

    By Aayina - 2/19/2017 8:14:59 AM

  • the source of information about mahmud ghaznawi is wrong. Radical Hindu groups are presenting wrong information in their books and the internet readers unfairly record it in their mind.
    By A. Thakur - 2/17/2017 10:24:41 PM

  • Aayina: I do not read the comments of Hats off type fake people as replying to them is promoting them, silence will frustrate them or let them continue or live with their Muslim-hatred speech, which is the source of their bread and butter.

I used to read your comment but you too spew hatred by simply looking from the point of view of hating only. The history is full of loot, destruction, attack, seizure, blood bath for power and governance spread over centuries by the kings of all faiths. The people like you who are reading to dilute history, to take revenge at the behest of their ancestors are the Non-Muslims - clan of Modi and anti-Muslim brigade.

Naseer Sb has well said in a sentence, “So make up your mind whether you want live in the past or the present. Don't mix up the two” It is up to you to take some wisdom from him or keep on bragging rhetoric.

    By Abdullah - 2/17/2017 11:07:08 AM

  • Aayina: You should take some lessons from Ghazni, Ghori, of today The Sanghis and Bhajpayees.
    Read this article please
"Godhra train burning was BJP's pre-planned conspiracy to create communal divide for winning Gujarat election"

"The burning of Sabarmati Express at Godhra was a pre-planned conspiracy", claim leaders of Patel agitation.

They have alleged that it was planned to create communal divide and set off riots so that the BJP could win the Gujarat election in 2002.

The stunning statement of the Patel leaders has once again brought to fore the mystery of the fire in the Sabarmati Express, which led to riots across Gujarat.

Rahul Desai and Lal Bhai Patel, who are leaders of the Patidar Samiti, who have now openly said that Godhra train fire was pre-planned. The BJP is a communal party and had there been no communal carnage, Narendra Modi won't have been re-elected as chief minister in 2002, said Desai.

Earlier too there have been questions raised over the circumstances surrounding the mysterious train blaze at Godhra. But Patel agitation leaders' charge has come as a surprise. Patels are angry at the crackdown on them, especially, the leader of agitation Hardik Patel, who is in jail on sedition charges.

The bodies of the dead were taken around along with processions, rousing tempers and the result was riots all over the State. It is alleged that 'go ahead' was given from the top and there were verbal orders to police and administration to let rioters attack Muslims, their houses and establishments.

The result was a pogrom which led to over 1,000 killings and mass rapes. This became a blot on the secular fabric of India. Separate commissions looked into the train fire and the riots that followed but the mystery had remained.
