Why Must Muslims Celebrate the Birth of Hazrat Jesus Christ (pbuh)

Few Muslims celebrate the Merry Christmas today, especially in the contemporary Indian Muslim society plagued with Wahhabism, but nearly all Muslims believe Hazrat Eisa Alaihis Salaam (Jesus Christ PBUH) not only as a Prophet (Nabi) but also an Apostle of God (Rasool Allah). Most of them also know of the numerous holy verses of Qur'an and authentic Hadith texts which speak so highly of Jesus' sanctity and his message's historicity....

Churn In Indian Muslim Community Over Feud Between Ajmer And Bareilly: Dargah Custodians Sparring Over Claims Of ‘True Sufism”
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Such retrogressive pronouncements or Fatwas from the Barelwi ulema were not on rise in India until they re-ideologised themselves in blasphemy laws emanating from Pakistan. Sultan Shahin, the founder-editor of this progressive forum, New Age Islam, rightly points it out:

“The fact remains that Mumtaz Quadri, the murderer of Governor Salman Taseer came from a non-Wahhabi Barelvi sect and was incited into his act and promised heaven in lieu of this murder by a Barelvi Mullah Hanif Qureshi. A shrine has now been built in the outskirts of Islamabad to worship him. Barelvis are considered Sufism-oriented and have been the main victims of Salafi-Wahhabi attacks on Sufi shrines. The half a million people who thronged the murderer Mumtaz Qadri’s funeral and the tens of thousands who are visiting his so-called shrine, however, are largely from Barelvi sect. They consider Governor Salman Taseer to be a blasphemer and his murderer an Aashiq-e-Rasool, i.e., someone who loves the Prophet (pbuh)…. The fact is Salman Taseer had merely called for the repeal of this black Blasphemy law.”...

Protecting the Prophet’s Sanctity (Tahaffuz-e-Namus-e-Risalat) And Tackling Tehreek-i-Labbaik In Pakistan: A Critical Observation
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Most ulema in Pakistan and even in India extend the applicability of blasphemy laws to non-Muslims living in Muslim countries. Not to speak of the self-avowed clerics like Maulvi Khadim Razvi of the ‘Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan’ (TLP) or the recently killed Maulvi Samiul Haque of 'Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan' (TTP), even the well-known Barelvi and Deobandi theologians,  Muftis (Islamic jurists) and more scandalously, even the so-called Sufi-Sunni clerics are unanimously agreed upon this. They aver that it is incumbent upon the Islamic government to execute all blasphemers, be they Muslim or non-Muslim. This actually emanates from their reference to this Hadith report as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari: "Slay whoever has desecrated the Prophet" (من سب نبيا فاقتلوه). (Al-Bukhari. 1997, vol. 9, 46)

Interestingly, Imam An-Nasai, another authoritative Hadith compiler like Imam Bukhari, has reportedly accused one of the narrators of this Hadith of lying....

Choosing death over degrees: What inspires the studious Kashmiri youths to choose militancy over scholarship?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

This is a brief account of how the studious Kashmiri youths abandoned their studies to join the militant ranks and got killed. But the crucial question is: Who are the ideologues who approach the university students and even research scholars and influence them to the extent that they agree to choose death over degrees? We must find concrete answers to these questions: how do the Kashmiri students and research scholars turn into militants? Do they make a sudden decision or does someone brainwash them slowly, steadily? And most importantly, what are the effective ways to weed out these underground brainwashers…

The Misconstrued Concept of Hijrat and the Position of Indian Ulema
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

No Indian Islamic cleric denies the significance of Hijrat (migration) in the early period of Islamic history. But to some clerics, Hijrat is mandatory (Wajib) even today for the Muslims living in the democratic countries. For liberal democracy is akin to Kufr in their view. Such toxic notions of the Hijrat are actually political tools which the extremist outfits use to further their political ends. Highlighting the Muslim marginalisation in countries like India, the extremist Islamist preachers indoctrinate the gullible Muslim youth mostly belonging to poor Muslim families who can be unconsciously trained to serve their political agendas….

The concept of Ummat-e-Wahida (“one nation”) through the terms of the Madina constitution clearly shows that the Muslims and non-Muslims whether from Makkah or Madinah were one community. Thus, this Prophetic principle recognized the “nation” for the first time in the history as a one indivisible unit, moving from the individual or the tribal life to the life of the single nation. It is not characterized by any particular religion, racism or tribalism. It rather ended racism and discrimination on the basis of religion:“The Jews shall be responsible for their expenses and the Believers for theirs…...

UN High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad’s Silence on Extremist Groups in Kashmir Is Disappointing
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Rampant violations of human rights are being perpetrated in the Kashmir valley at the hands of extremist groups and separatist leaders who believe in Pakistan’s two-nation theory. But the UN high commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has brazenly overlooked all this in his 49-page report. Those who do not believe in the radical Islamic concepts like ‘jihad-e-Kashmir’; global Islamic caliphate and Ghazwat-ul-Hind (Islamic battle against India) face fatal discrimination in Kashmir.  Any traditional Kashmiri Muslim who rejects Wahhabism is targeted by extremist groups. But the first-ever UN human rights report on Kashmir maintains deafening silence on this grave violation of human rights…..

Kashmir Is Too Diverse, Too Multicultural A Land To Turn Into A Radical Islamist State
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Now that the long-cherished opportunity of peace and reconciliation in form of ceasefire has been opened up, something otherwise has to happen. It's about time the mainstream Kashmiri people focused on their lost heritage—Kashmiriyat—the greatest gift of Rishi-Sufi tradition in the mystics’ land. In fact, ultimately, Kashmir is too diverse, too multicultural a land to turn into a radical Islamist state. According to the canonical rule in the Islamic jurisprudence, if a Muslim has the ability to carry out Ijtihad, he needs not to comply with the Ijtihad of any other Mujtahid (one who carries out Ijtihad). Next to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, Ijtihad has the most pivotal role to play in the Islamic rulings and edicts. Unlike the first two primary sources of the Shari'ah, which discontinued at the demise of the Prophet (pbuh), Ijtihad is a continuing process of intellectual thinking, creative re-thinking and brainstorming on contemporary issues and matters of religion. But it is allowed only for those who have a scholastic aptitude for deriving meanings and extracting rulings from the texts of Qur’an and Hadith....

Rebuttal to Zakir Musa’s False Premise of Pitching Democracy and Secularism against Islam
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Pitching democracy or secularism against Islam is the key jihadist narrative that has been flogged off by the false ideologues of Islam—from Zawahiri to Zakir. But on the contrary, there is substantial evidence in the Quran and Sunnah (the Prophetic traditions) to make it possible for us to adopt both democracy and secularism as compatible to Islamic principles. It is sufficient to quote these two verses of the Qur’an: “Those who respond to their Lord and attend to their prayers; who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation and spend out of what We have provided for them” (42:38).....

It was different from most rape cases in India, but quite identical to what the ISIS did with the young Yazdi girls in Iraq and Syria to terrorize the entire Yazdi community in their previously occupied territories. Substantial Evidence Proves That Qur’anically Jews and Christians Qualify As Mu’minun As Well As Muslimun, Says Australian Islamic Scholar Dr Adis Duderija
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Etymologically, Millat means a pathway in Arabic. Millat Ibrahim denotes the faith tradition of Prophet Abraham (or Ibrahim in Arabic) as mentioned in the Qur'an. The Qur'an refers to the faith of Ibrahim as “Millat u Ibrahim”. It also tells about Hazrat Ibrahim’s experiences in the quest for the truth and how he first considered a star, moon and sun as his gods but rejected them as mere creatures and how he finally believed in their Creator (Qur'an 6:76-79). The Qur’an has used the term Millat in fifteen different contexts. 10 of them (2:120, 2:130, 2:135, 3:95, 4:125, 6:161, 12:37, 12:38, 16:123, 22:78) refer, directly or indirectly, to Prophet Abraham. It also tells us that it is Abraham who coined the term "Muslim" and Allah named all his followers Muslims. (Qur'an 22:78)....

Islamic Heritage in India Is All About Moderation and Inclusivity, but Muslims Need To Revive This Legacy Which Is Being Lost To Takfirism
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

For instance, Sufism—the rich product of India’s ancient links with Central Asia, carried its universal message of “Wahdat ul Wajud” (Unity of Existence) which beautifully reflected the Indian concept of ‘Vasudhaive Kutumbakam’ (World as one family). Thus, Islamic heritage in India is mainly based on practicing the prophetic tradition: “Al-Khlaqu Ayal Allah” meaning: the whole mankind is one family of God. This is the emblem of religious pluralism in Indian Islamic tradition which can be described as the true expression of the Devine Will, as enunciated in the Qur’an: “If Allah, the Almighty had willed, all the people on the earth would have become one religious community, whether they had wanted or not”....

That India’s religious plurality will be highlighted in this event as key to success in mitigating the influence of extremist Islamist groups such as ISIS and al-Qaeda is pertinent. Undeniably, only in the pluralistic ethos of the inclusivist Indian polity, the Vedic tradition, Gnosis of Gautam Buddha, Non-Violence of Mahavir Jain, Sikh teaching of the Devine Unity as well as the Monotheism of the Semitic religions are brought together. This is the land where Islam arrived in the very age of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and as recorded in history, the first mosque had been built in Kerala at that time. Thus, India’s ancient cultural and civilisational force has great potentials stemming from its inclusive religious traditions, to curb extremist thoughts and hardcore philosophies of all kinds…..

There is no room for "us versus them" mentality in Islam. All human beings are creatures of God and we therefore must show respect to each other. Qur’an shows Allah’s love for man as infinite and all-embracing: “And My Mercy embraces all things” (Surah Al-A`raf 7:156).

Not a single creature is exempted from Allah’s bountiful grace and divine mercy. The beloved Prophet said, “When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: “Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath.” (Al-Bukhari) He also said, “Allah has divided mercy into 100 parts, and He retained with Him 99 parts, and sent down to earth 1 part…

Indian Muslim Clergy to Counter ISIS Propaganda: But they should go beyond rhetoric to a genuine counter-narrative that refutes Jihadism based on traditional Islamic theology

The clergy is required to counter the exclusivist Jihadi theology of violence and supremacism which is primarily based on the traditional Islamic theology of consensus of all schools of thought. This has to be done through a counter-narrative based on a new inclusivist theology of peace and pluralism. But to do that the clergy will have to work towards evolving a new theology that is different from the traditional theology taught in madrasas. It is this age-old theology that is used by Jihadis to propagate their message.

It cannot be stressed enough that the reason Jihadis have been able to capture the imagination of thousands of our youth the world over is that they are not saying anything new. They are simply showing a way to practice what the ulema (religious scholars) have been preaching. The Jihadi narrative is the traditional Islamic theological narrative of Islam domination over all other religious beliefs, and eradication of what it considers the biggest crimes humanity can commit, particularly shirk, polytheism or idol worship, and kufr, rejection of the prophethood of Hazrat Mohammad (pbuh). All the most eminent scholars of Islam from Imam Ghazali (11th-12th century) to Imam Ibn-e-Taimiya (13th-14th century), Mujaddid Alf-e-Saani Sheikh Sirhindi (16th-17th century), Shah Waliullah Muhaddis Dehlavi (18th century) have shown a vision of political Islam that was finally given a more definite form in the 20th century by Maulana Syed Abul A’la Maududi, Hassan al-Banna, and Syed Qutb. The Jihadi ideologues of the 21st century may be stressing some parts of this traditional narrative more vigorously and downplaying some other aspects. But they are not saying anything that is entirely new or radically different.

Jihadi literature has not dropped from the sky all of a sudden. This is not the creation of Osama bin Laden or so-called “Khalifa” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Their narrative of world domination, fighting those who do not accept the message of Islam is basically what is taught in all our madrasas. The definition of Jihad as fighting those who do not accept the oneness of God and prophethood of Mohammad (pbuh) is found in books of every school of Sunni fiqh (jurisprudence), be it Hanafi, Malaki, Shafei or Hanbali. Indeed, even Shia theology does not differ much with Sunnis in matters of political Islam. They too want world domination for Islam and desire to subdue all non-Muslims.
