The Story of Creation in the Qur’an Converges with the Theory of Evolution

The DNA located in the cytoplasm, organelles called mitochondria comes only from the mother and therefore our mitochondrial DNA is identical to that of our mother and if the same is identical to what is found in every living human being, it establishes that all the living human beings today, trace back their lineage to a single woman whom we may call the “Mitochondrial Eve”....

Why the Message of the 7th Century Quran Is Eternally and Universally Valid

While the social behaviour of animals is instinctive or built into their DNA, in the case of the progeny of Adam, it is learned. Humans have enormous capacity to transform through learning and unlike every other creation; they are not complete slave even to their instincts. Allah’s revelations through the ages have played an exclusive role in the learning to control instincts to behave as “moral agents”...

    What Does Taqwa Mean?

The methodology that I have followed to derive the meaning of Taqwa was to let the Quran teach me its meaning. This is the methodology that I follow for all my articles. To the best of my knowledge and belief, no other person has derived the same meaning of Taqwa, because no one else follows the same methodology with the same Taqwa or intensity. They follow it loosely, or without adequate Taqwa, which is why their meanings do not fit well the usage of the word in the Quran....

    Adjurations in the Quran

Scholars of Islam have strangely struggled with explaining the adjurations in the Quran when these offer them the opportunity to show their skills of interpretation and understanding of metaphors and of poetic allusions. Some have even wondered “what does Allah mean by swearing by something that is inferior to Him?”!  Others are clearly embarrassed by Allah swearing so often because a man who swears often is looked down upon....

Islamic Shariat and the Individual Muslim

The call is made in the name of restoring the ‘Sovereignty of Allah’! Is the sovereignty of Allah subject to us humans proclaiming and establishing it? Allah can any day impose his Will on us and take away from us our freedom and autonomy which He did when he subjected us to colonial rule. Do not fall for such misleading political slogans. Without doubt, we believe in following the Shariat of Allah or the Deen of Allah, but what the Classical Islamic Fiqh teaches us, is a hideous caricature of the Shariat of the Quran...

Inadequacies and Errors of Classical Islamic Fiqh - Inheritance Related Calculations

There are only two verses relating to division of inheritance among heirs based on which books have been written which confuse rather than elucidate. These two verses are both necessary and sufficient to cover all situations which leave behind close family members such as parents, spouse, children and siblings as heirs. However, we need to know some basic school level arithmetic covering fractions and proportions taught at middle school level….

Religion Requires the Humbleness to Adapt

Over a period, through practice under compulsion, man learned the great benefits of following the religion and became a willing follower.  Allah has civilized mankind through progressive revelations and finally revealed the Quran which contains the complete and perfected religion to Muhammad (pbuh), the seal of the prophets. Was the final revelation completely clear and understandable, or were certain parts still counter intuitive and required faith to follow? Adaptation is different from following based on reason. We adapt to our environment over which have no control, or to a religion under compulsion or to the religion because we have faith in it although not everything is clearly understood….

Who are the Momineen and the Muslimeen?

The purpose of a moral code is to restrain man from indulging in pleasure seeking activities that harm the society or self, and encourage making sacrifices for the good of society, while allowing seeking pleasure which is good for self and society and avoiding pain which is harmful to self without any benefit to the society. The moral code from religion enabled us to develop trust in strangers through shared values from religion and cooperate in large numbers without which we may not have survived as a species...

Therefore, all the verses in the previous scriptures that are for fighting against nations simply because the people are “godless”, are abrogated as this is no longer a justifiable reason. The punishments for apostasy, heresy are also not found in the Quran and therefore abrogated. The punishment for adultery is reduced from stoning to death to a hundred lashes. The punishment for homosexuality is undefined and can be reduced to strong social disapproval disallowing only open, brazen and wanton acts. ...

The Meaning of Islam and Muslim

Acceptance is however based on trust or faith and to indicate both trust/faith and acceptance is to acknowledge a relationship of peace and friendship rather than hostility.  Salam used as a greeting may have initially indicated only acceptance and trust and over a period acquired the meaning of “peace” since acceptance and trust leads to peace. Now, after centuries of peace and among friends and relatives, it is interpreted as a prayer of peace for the one greeted as our minds are no longer suspicious of the other....

Honouring the Prophet (pbuh) and Showing Gratitude

The creation of Adam and his progeny, distinct from every other creature, in their cognitive abilities, was a great favour of Allah on the progeny of Adam. Further, Allah sent Messengers all through the ages, to guide mankind on the straight path to success in this life and in the Hereafter.  This process of guidance through revelations culminated with Muhammad (pbuh), and the revelation of the Quran containing the perfected and complete religion. With it was also complete the granting of full autonomy to man in making moral choices and therefore the Quran proclaimed, “Let there be no compulsion in religion”....

The other defining characteristics of the “moderates” are to be seen to be questioning the religion, Quran, Allah and the Prophet. They make a virtue of it. They define “literalism” as belief in the entire Quran and make a virtue of arguing for the excising of many verses from the Quran.  The western society is paranoid of Shariat and Jehad. These “moderates” therefore reject the verses of the Quran on these subjects to become acceptable.  Such people will surely sink deeper and deeper into denial until they reach a point of no return. There is neither hope nor cure for them and the word of Allah will come true....

How Islamic Scholars Distort the Message of the Qur’an Misled By the Previous Scriptures

The prophetic mission of Muhammad (pbuh), and the revelation of the Quran came at a time when the moral principles from religion had permeated society and the people had realized from the empirical evidence, the benefits of having followed the moral principles. This obviated the need for compulsion in religion as the truth of the religion was clear from error. This was a major break from all the previous scriptures, and for the first time, the Qur’an proclaims “Let there be no compulsion in religion, for the Truth stands out clear from error”. This is in stark contrast to the previous scriptures where both compulsion in religion and killing and or subjugation by enslavement of those who rejected the religion was commanded.....

The Religion of Allah before and After the Quran

All the scriptures are from Allah, and there isn’t even an implied criticism of any scriptures or the people following those scriptures. What makes one people superior to another, is their adherence to moral principles and their integrity, and not any real or imagined superiority of their religion or scriptures. In this respect, many Muslims scholars have correctly remarked, that Islam is to be found more among the Jews and the Christians than among Muslims....

The Importance of Understanding Correctly, the Attributes of Allah – Pre-destination and the question, ‘Was Muhammad (pbuh) Pre-Destined To Be The Seal Of The Prophets?’ – Part Three

This is exactly when the verse 33:40 was revealed in 5 AH, during or after the Battle of the Trench, saying that Muhammad was the seal of the Prophets. Before this, if the Mushrikin had agreed to desist from religious persecution and agreed not to hinder Muslims from the path of Allah, it would have been back to 109:6 “To you be your religion and to me mine” and peaceful co-existence which may or may not have lasted. If peace had lasted the lifetime of the Prophet, then he would not have been the seal of the prophets since the Deen would have remained incomplete....

This debate of created/uncreated began when the Mutazilla or the Rationalists began to argue that the Quran is created according to and is defined by its historical context and must therefore change with the times. The response to this was that it is uncreated and therefore unchangeable....

The Importance of Understanding Correctly, the Attributes of Allah – Divine Will, Justice and Mercy – Part One

Allah is the sole source of all knowledge of what is right and what is wrong or what is moral and what is immoral. If we wish to master this knowledge perfectly, it is essential that we orient ourselves perfectly to receive this knowledge. The orientation is by gaining a perfect understanding of the nature of Allah or of all His attributes. Misunderstanding of any attribute leads to a wrong understanding of His Book, of right and wrong, and this is the way Satan misleads and deprives us of becoming perfect Muslim....

Why the Reformist Scholars Cannot Make a Difference
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The misinterpretations of the traditionalists cannot be countered by an appeal to modernity. If we need to change the religion with the times, then the religion is man-made and if so, why do we need the Quran at all? We can go wherever our reason leads us. We have a case against the traditionalists only if we can show them to be in gross error or by showing that their Islam is a caricature of the real Islam of the Quran if not a complete anti-thesis of it. If not, then the traditionalists are right and we either accept their Islam or go our own ways. Why should we hang around Islam if we disagree with what we believe to be the authentic Islam? What we need to become is a person of integrity and not a hypocrite.

The fact is that the Islam of the traditionalists is a gross misrepresentation of the true Islam of the Quran as brought out by the clear meaning of the verses shorn of all interpretations.....

Let There Be No Compulsion in Religion: Quran Makes the Truth Stand out Clear from Error
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

It makes sense for Muhammad (pbuh) to be the last of the prophets only if through his prophetic mission, Allah has perfected His religion, and made Truth stand out clear from Error for all time to come. If there was any chance of Truth once again becoming unclear from Error, Allah would have provided for another prophet to come and complete the task of making the truth become clear from error, until which time, He would have allowed compulsion in religion, since we could not invite people to Allah’s religion based on reason alone, as long as the Truth was not clear from error. We therefore understand the mission of the last prophet Muhammad was to give us the perfect Book the Quran, which makes the Truth stand out clear from Error, and to demonstrate through his mission that no compulsion in religion is required. That his mission was not to compel people to Allah’s religion, is the message reinforced at every stage of his mission....

Understanding the Religion of Allah through the Ages
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

To make people practice what went against their intuition and apparent self-interest, required the law giving prophets to be rulers with the necessary political power to lay down the law and ensure strict compliance through a system of harsh punishment for any contravention. These ruler-cum-prophets are the ones who also fought in Allah’s way and brought larger number of people under the religion of Allah. (3:146) “How many of the prophets fought (in Allah´s way)”. We see an element of coercion in early stages of religion without which no one would have observed the moral code willingly, since what is right had not become clear from what is wrong....

Is Islam Without Answers To Present Day Problems Or Even A Cause For Them?
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Other societies and cultures were at some point in their past, worse off than the Muslims today, and their worst was worse than the worst of the Muslims if that is any consolation. They progressed rapidly on every parameter, only when they moved away from the strangle-hold of their religion and became secular in their outlook. The Muslims on the other hand are more “religious” than every other community. Is that the reason then of their backwardness? The logical answer to that question is a yes. Should the Muslims therefore take a lesson from this and move away from their religion? These are questions to which the Ulema must find answers or else the Muslims will move away from religion....

Was Allah Unjust in Creating Adam and Favouring His Progeny Over All His Creation?
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Man is the only creation that has moral agency, capable of both good and evil. Every other creation follows the nature given to it and is therefore not subject to Allah's judgment. We know from our history that the modern man with cognitive abilities did not appear on the earth until 70,000 years ago. There were other progenitors of human beings besides Adam, who appeared about 250,000 years ago. Every other species of humans besides the progeny of Adam is long extinct. Humans were like any other animal and lived like animals without guidance from Allah, without religion and without culture.  “The most important thing to know about prehistoric humans is that they were insignificant animals with no more impact on their environment than gorillas, fireflies or jellyfish” (Harari). The Quran says of such people:

(76:1)” Has there not been over Man a long period of Time, when he was nothing - (not even) mentioned? “

Indian Muslim Clergy to Counter ISIS Propaganda: But they should go beyond rhetoric to a genuine counter-narrative that refutes Jihadism based on traditional Islamic theology

The clergy is required to counter the exclusivist Jihadi theology of violence and supremacism which is primarily based on the traditional Islamic theology of consensus of all schools of thought. This has to be done through a counter-narrative based on a new inclusivist theology of peace and pluralism. But to do that the clergy will have to work towards evolving a new theology that is different from the traditional theology taught in madrasas. It is this age-old theology that is used by Jihadis to propagate their message.

It cannot be stressed enough that the reason Jihadis have been able to capture the imagination of thousands of our youth the world over is that they are not saying anything new. They are simply showing a way to practice what the ulema (religious scholars) have been preaching. The Jihadi narrative is the traditional Islamic theological narrative of Islam domination over all other religious beliefs, and eradication of what it considers the biggest crimes humanity can commit, particularly shirk, polytheism or idol worship, and kufr, rejection of the prophethood of Hazrat Mohammad (pbuh). All the most eminent scholars of Islam from Imam Ghazali (11th-12th century) to Imam Ibn-e-Taimiya (13th-14th century), Mujaddid Alf-e-Saani Sheikh Sirhindi (16th-17th century), Shah Waliullah Muhaddis Dehlavi (18th century) have shown a vision of political Islam that was finally given a more definite form in the 20th century by Maulana Syed Abul A’la Maududi, Hassan al-Banna, and Syed Qutb. The Jihadi ideologues of the 21st century may be stressing some parts of this traditional narrative more vigorously and downplaying some other aspects. But they are not saying anything that is entirely new or radically different.

Jihadi literature has not dropped from the sky all of a sudden. This is not the creation of Osama bin Laden or so-called “Khalifa” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Their narrative of world domination, fighting those who do not accept the message of Islam is basically what is taught in all our madrasas. The definition of Jihad as fighting those who do not accept the oneness of God and prophethood of Mohammad (pbuh) is found in books of every school of Sunni fiqh (jurisprudence), be it Hanafi, Malaki, Shafei or Hanbali. Indeed, even Shia theology does not differ much with Sunnis in matters of political Islam. They too want world domination for Islam and desire to subdue all non-Muslims.
