Kerala: Muslim League volunteers clean Ram temple, Hindus clean masjid ahead of Eid

Many parts of northern Kerala have been underwater for over three days. The hammering rains have flooded many areas, while completely submerging buildings and houses.

As the rain declined, Kerala has slowly started stitching themselves back together. Efforts have begun to clean buildings which have remained underwater for days.

Lord Ram temple in SulthanBatheryWayanad has been under water for over two days. On Sunday as the water level receded, volunteers Muslim Youth League - White Guards, offered to clean the temple.

The whole temple building including the shrine has remained under water for over two days and hence completely covered in muck. The volunteers soon swung into action at the temple. The temple and premises were cleaned completely by Sunday evening.

This cleaning is a challenge considering the amount of debris left behind the flood waters.

Many parts of northern Kerala have been underwater for over three days. The hammering rains have flooded many areas, while completely submerging buildings and houses.

In yet another incident, two volunteers Santhosh and Kumar were spotted cleaning a masjid in Kannur on Eid eve. The KurumathurJuma Masjid has remained under water after a river nearby started overflowing. On Sunday, both Santhosh and Kumar along with the help of other volunteers in the region started the clean up drive.

By the evening, the prayer hall and the mosque premises were cleaned fully. On Monday morning, believers offered Eid prayers in this mosque.

‘You’ll see several steps for J&K, Ladakh soon’, says MukeshAmbani at Reliance AGM

Reliance Industries Limited Chairman and Managing Director MukeshAmbani made the announcement during the 42nd AGM of the group. Jammu and Kashmir was recently divided into two union territories -- J&K with a legislature and Ladakh without an assembly.

INDIA Updated: Aug 12, 2019 13:44 IST

Reliance Industries Limited Chairman and Managing Director MukeshAmbani on Monday announced that his company had plans for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the two recently-formed union territories.

“Responding to the call of PM Narendra Modi Ji, we stand committed to the needs of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. You will see several announcements for the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in the coming days,” Ambani said at the 42nd Annual General Meeting of the group, reports ANI.

Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped and the state was divided into two union territories -- J&K with a legislature and Ladakh without an assembly. Both Houses of Parliament have passed the changes.

In his address to the nation days later, PM Modi urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and the country at large to come forward for the development of J&K and end the menace of terrorism.

Economic revival of the state is expected to be the next big step to integrate the economies of J&K and Ladakh with that of mainstream India.

It will include the unfinished developmental agenda that Modi announced for the region on November 7, 2015, the officials said on Tuesday

Industry has recommended a 10-point policy agenda for growth of the region, including the creation of a better investment climate and a focus on sectors such as tourism, infrastructure and connectivity, agriculture and horticulture, and renewable energy, among others, a CII statement said.

“Strengthening MSME [micro, small and medium enterprises], improving access to finance, and elevating education and skill development will be central to the progress of the hardworking people of the region. With the recent significant changes, investment and land purchases for industrial and social development shall be possible, as we look forward to economic prosperity,” it added.

Pak Rangers skip Eid tradition at Attari-Wagah border, say no sweets for BSF

Traditionally, on the occasion of Eid, Pakistani Rangers offer sweets to the BSF, a gesture that was reciprocated by the Indian side.

INDIA Updated: Aug 12, 2019 15:14 IST

Pakistani Rangers declined an offer by India’s border-guarding force, Border Security Force, for the traditional exchange of sweets at the Attari-Wagah border against the backdrop of bitterness in Islamabad over India ending special status to Jammu and Kashmir and deciding to carve out two union territories.

A senior BSF officer posted at the Attari joint check post confirmed that there was no exchange of sweets “between us and Pakistani Rangers on Monday”.

The officer said they had anticipated the possibility in light of the back-and-forth between the two countries over New Delhi’s Kashmir move. But the BSF still made the offer. “On Sunday, we had sent a communiqué to our counterparts asking if they would offer the sweets on Eid, but they refused”.

Traditionally, on the occasion of Eid, Pakistani Rangers offer sweets to the BSF, a gesture that was reciprocated by the Indian side.

BSF Amritsar sector deputy inspector general (DIG) JS Oberoi told HT on Sunday that they were waiting for the Rangers to respond and would act accordingly.

Both BSF and Rangers have been following the tradition of exchanging sweets and gifts on national festivals like Diwali and Eid, as well as on the occasion of the Independence Day and Republic Day functions of the two neighboring countries.

It is still not clear if the two sides will continue the tradition on Independence Day of Pakistan and India on August 14 and 15, respectively.

Another senior BSF official of Punjab frontier said they will offer sweets to the Pakistani Rangers on August 15 and it would be up to the Rangers to reciprocate.

On Saturday, Pakistan suspended trade with India through integrated Attari check post. Pakistan has already stopped all bus services between both the countries as well as the trans-border Samjhauta Express. Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria has already returned to India after the Imran Khan government downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi.

The BSF didn’t exchange sweets with Pakistan Rangers at the border on the occasion of Republic Day last year to protest the growing incidents of ceasefire violations across the Line of Control. Similarly, in October 2016, after Indian Army carried out surgical strikes targeting terror launch pads in PoK, the BSF didn’t exchange sweets with the Pakistani Rangers in October 2016 on the occasion of Diwali.

Meanwhile, Indo-Pak Friendship Front secretary Deepkal Bali said: “Though the tension between the countries is escalating, it is very sad to hear that sweets were not exchanged by the troops on the border. It is our tradition, which must be followed.”

Sweets between India and Pakistan were exchanged on the occasion of Eid al Fitr in June and Republic Day in January, this year, at Attari-Wagah border.

After Ivanka Trump Wishes Muslims 'Eid Mubarak' On Twitter, Critics Remind Her Of Father's Muslim Travel Ban

By Benjamin Fearnow On 8/11/19

Ivanka Trump was ridiculed this weekend after wishing "Eid Mubarak" to Muslims celebrating the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

The greeting, translated as "Blessed Feast" is used as a salutation during Islam's high holidays. Eid al-Adha, which this year runs from sundown August 10 to sundown August 11, honors Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command.

After posting the greeting on Twitter Sunday morning, the first daughter and presidential advisor was derided as "Nepotism Barbie" and accused of Islamophobia for her association with the Trump administration, which instituted a travel ban on visitors and immigrants from several majority-Muslim countries in 2017.

"Your father instituted a Muslim ban," tweeted Mother Jones editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery.

"Psst, don't nobody tell Nepotism Barbie here how her father tried to ban all Muslims from entering the United States," wrote Smirking Chimp blogger Jeff Tiedrich.

In February 2017, President Trump issued Executive Order 13769, "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." The White House described the order as a preemptive attempt to keep out dangerous individuals from unstable, predominately Arab countries.

"Deteriorating conditions in certain countries due to war, strife, disaster, and civil unrest increase the likelihood that terrorists will use any means possible to enter the United States," EO 13769 warned.

The ban has been labeled racist, Islamophobic and anti-immigration—and Ivanka received full brunt of criticism Sunday following her olive branch toward the Muslim community.

"Imagine being the advisor to the president who created the Muslim ban and tweeting this," wrote novelist Molly Jong-Fast (The Social Climber's Handbook).

"Your father is bigoted against Muslims of all nationalities," wrote Justin Hendrix. "Your duplicity is despicable."

Israel may ‘spark a war’ if it joins US-led flotilla in Persian Gulf, Iran’s navy chief warns

Published time: 12 Aug, 2019

Tehran has advised Israel to stay clear of the Persian Gulf, where the US has been struggling to amass an anti-Iranian armada, noting that every vessel illegally present in the region increases the risk of an all-out conflict.

“Any illegitimate presence by the Zionists in the waters of the Persian Gulf could spark a war,” commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Navy, AlirezaTangsiri, warned on Sunday.

Israel reportedly volunteered to provide intelligence and assistance to the US-led coalition against Iran, as the pressure in the Persian Gulf mounts, after a series of mysterious tanker attacks and reciprocal vessel seizures by Iran and the UK. Israel warned last month that it is ready to strike Iran in the case of any “mistaken calculations,” piling on the pressure after Tehran said a US attack would mean “only half an hour will remain of Israel’s lifespan.”

US appears to be seeking a pretext to start Persian Gulf war, Moscow warns, expressing 'concern'

The Islamic Republic has vowed to protect its sovereignty in the Strait of Hormuz and beyond, accusing the US of trying to enforce its unilateral oil sanctions through military pressure after failing to do it via political extortion. Washington insists its intentions are peaceful and that it is rallying foreign warships to the region with the noble goal of protecting shipping lanes and vessels from Tehran.

So far, the US has had trouble drumming up support for its “maritime policing” initiative among European countries, as only the UK has been eager enough to send two of its vessels into the midst of the tensions.

PM Imran says 'comprehensive package' is being drafted for Karachi to 'end decades of neglect'

Dawn.comUpdated August 12, 2019

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said that a "comprehensive package" for Karachi will be announced by the federal government in order to "end the decades of neglect and suffering of the people of this great metropolis".

In a tweet, the prime minister said that he had directed all Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) MNAs and MPAs elected from Karachi to stay in their constituencies and provide assistance to residents on EidulAzha and Independence Day.

"I have directed all MNAs/MPAs of Karachi to be in their constituencies throughout Eid and Independence Day holidays and provide all assistance to the people. The Federal Govt is drafting a comprehensive package to end the decades of neglect and suffering of the people of this great metropolis," he posted on his official Twitter account.

The tweet comes a day after at least 11 people, including a child, lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Karachi. Nine people died of electrocution, while two were killed in roof collapses in Qasbah Colony and Bhatta Village as the megalopolis experienced heavy monsoon showers for a second consecutive day.

Though Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah visited rain affected areas and directed Karachi commissioner, city police and local body members to drain rain water and assist residents, the provincial government attracted severe criticism for failing to deal with the rain crisis despite prior warning.

In May this year, Prime Minister Imran had announced a Rs162 billion development package for Karachi, which included grants for 18 projects, which will be focused on priority areas like transportation and water provision.

An eighth round of talks on a pact that would allow the United States to end its longest war and withdraw its troops from Afghanistan ended on Monday and both sides would consult their leaders on the next steps, the Taliban said.

The talks, held in Qatar since late last year between the Taliban and US officials, have brought hopes for an agreement allowing US troops to leave in exchange for a Taliban promise that Afghanistan will not be used by militants as a base from which to plot attacks abroad. A Taliban spokesman, ZabihullahMujahid, said the latest talks, which a U.S. official said earlier involved technical details and the implementation mechanisms of a pact, ended early on Monday.

“It was long and useful, both sides decided to consult with their leaders/seniors for the next steps,” Mujahid said in a statement. U.S. officials were not immediately available for comment but the chief U.S. negotiator, veteran Afghan-American diplomat ZalmayKhalilzad, said on Sunday hard work was being done “toward a lasting and honourable peace agreement and a sovereign Afghanistan which poses no threat to any other country”.

An agreement would allow U.S. President Donald Trump to achieve his aim of ending a war launched in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. The war has become a stalemate, with neither side able to defeat the other and casualties rising among civilians as well as combatants.

The pact is expected to include a Taliban commitment to hold power-sharing talks with the U.S.-backed government but it is not expected to include a Taliban ceasefire with the government, leading to fears the insurgents will fight on when U.S. forces leave.

President of the U.S.-backed government, Ashraf Ghani, appeared to question the deal on Sunday, saying his nation would decide its future, not outsiders.

Ghani and his government have not been involved in the negotiations. The Taliban do not recognise the government and have refused to talk to it. “Our future cannot be decided outside, whether in the capital cities of our friends or neighbours. The fate of Afghanistan will be decided here in Afghanistan,” Ghani told a gathering for prayers marking the Eid al-Adha Muslim festival.

Khalilzad said scholars believed the deeper meaning of Eid was to sacrifice one’s ego. “Leaders on all sides of the war in Afghanistan must take this to heart as we strive for peace,” he said

Afghan President rejects foreign interference in country’s fate

President Ashraf Ghani spoke during the Muslim holiday Eid-al-Adha and as US and Taliban negotiators continue their work in the Gulf nation of Qatar.

By AP |Kabul |

Updated: August 11, 2019 2:28:47 pm

Afghanistan’s president on Sunday rejected foreign interference as the United States and the Taliban appear to be closing in on a peace deal without the Afghan government at the table. President Ashraf Ghani spoke during the Muslim holiday Eid-al-Adha and as US and Taliban negotiators continue their work in the Gulf nation of Qatar, where the insurgents have a political office.

Speaking after the Eid prayers, Ghani insisted that next month’s presidential election is essential so that Afghanistan’s leader will have a powerful mandate to decide the country’s future after years of war.  “The fate of Afghanistan will be decided here in this homeland,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to intervene in our affairs.”

US envoy ZalmayKhalilzad is seeking a peace deal by September 1, weeks before the vote. The two sides are expected to agree on the withdrawal of some 20,000 US and NATO troops in return for Taliban guarantees that Afghanistan would not be a base for other extremist groups.

Few details have emerged, but Khalilzad and the lead Taliban negotiator, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, have been traveling in recent days to brief several countries involved in the process on the latest The Taliban spokesman in Qatar, SuhailShaheen, who has said a deal is expected at the end of this round of talks, on Sunday issued an Eid message expressing the hope that Afghanistan “will celebrate future Eids under the Islamic system, without occupation, under an environment of permanent peace and unity.”

The Taliban have refused to negotiate with the Afghan government, dismissing it as a US puppet, and on Tuesday they declared the September 28 election a “sham”.

They warned fellow Afghans to stay away from campaign rallies and the polls, saying such gatherings could be targeted. A day later the group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that targeted security forces in Kabul. The attack killed 14 people and wounded 145, most of them civilians.

The Taliban control roughly half of Afghanistan and are at their strongest since the US-led invasion toppled their five-year-old government in 2001 after the group had harbored al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Ghani, stung by being excluded from the peace talks, on Sunday pleaded for national unity and peace. “Peace is the desire of each Afghan and peace will come, there shouldn’t be any doubt about it,” he said. “But we want a peace in which each Afghan has dignity. We don’t want a peace in which Afghans wouldn’t have dignity. We don’t want a peace that would cause people to leave their country. We don’t want brain drain and we don’t want investment drain.”

A peace deal would be followed by intra-Afghan talks, but it is not clear whether the Taliban would agree to talk to Kabul government members in their official capacity or only as ordinary Afghans, as in the past.

The US and NATO formally concluded their combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014. The American and allied troops that remain are conducting strikes on the Taliban and the local Islamic State affiliate, and working to train and build the Afghan military.

President Donald Trump has publicly expressed his exasperation with America’s continued involvement in Afghanistan and a desire to bring troops home.

Iran Condemns US Polices for Inciting Tensions in Persian Gulf

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a phone conversation with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, denounced how some trans-regional countries, particularly the US, are stoking tensions and complicating affairs in the Persian Gulf region.

"The goal of [all] measures taken by some extra-regional countries, including the United States, in the Persian Gulf region is to make the world believe this region is insecure," Rouhani said in his Sunday phone conversation with Qatari Emir, emphasizing that "such measure only render the region's problems more complicated and dangerous."

"Iran attaches high importance to maintaining and consolidating security in the Persian Gulf region, the Strait of Hormuz and the Sea of Oman, and spares no effort in this regard, because it believes that maintaining this security will ensure development and interests of regional people," Iran's president said.

The Iranian president underscored that stability and security in the Persian Gulf can be realized through cooperation and joint security initiatives among all littoral states, saying, "Historical experience has shown that foreign intervention will only heighten tensions and make conditions in this region more complicated."

Stressing that the Islamic republic favors continued deliberations with friendly countries, Rouhani said Tehran believes that de-escalation of regional tensions would benefit everyone, expressing hope that Americans would finally realize that the path they have chosen is wrong, has no winner, and [therefore, they] must rectify their behavior.

The Qatari monarch, for his part, said defusing tensions in the Persian Gulf would serve the interests of the region and the world.

Highlighting the crucial role played by Iran in the region, the Qatari Emir added that Doha will spare no effort to help reduce tensions.

Sheikh Tamim also emphasized that regional security must be maintained by the Persian Gulf’s littoral states and that Qatar’s position is crystal clear in this regard as it seeks cooperation with Iran in bolstering bilateral ties and regional security.

Tensions in the Persian Gulf region began on May 12, couple of days after the US tightened its unilateral sanctions against Iran with refusing to issue new waivers for Iranian oil buyers, when 4 commercial vessels were targeted by “sabotage operations” near UAE’s territorial waters.

Israeli reports then stated that Mossad had collected material at the site of the alleged sabotage, and passed the alleged evidence to US intelligence agencies, prompting some American officials to pin the attacks on Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif dismissed the "fabricated" claim and described the attacks as "false flag" operations aimed at accusing Iran.

Tensions entered a new chapter on June 13, concurrent with a historic visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Tehran, when two vessels were suspiciously attacked near the strait of Hormuz.

The Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous and Norwegian-owned Front Altair oil tankers were struck by explosions near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Japan’s government said both vessels were carrying “Japanese-related” cargo.

Shortly after the two tankers were hit by the explosions, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran. A day later, US President Donald Trump made a similar claim. Neither offered any evidence, and the footage that was released was said by US officials to show Iranian personnel removing an “unexploded” mine.

Iran rejected the allegations.

Experts said the explosions could have been false flags to implicate Iran at the time of the historic visit by Abe to Iran, a first of its kind in more than 40 years. Prime Minister Abe was meeting with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei when the explosions happened.

Japanese officials said Tokyo dismissed the claim by the United States that Iran attacked the two oil tankers.

Tensions reached a new peak between Iran and the US after the Trump administration decided to send an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers and 1,500 troops to the Persian Gulf after the blasts, citing what it called an imminent "threat" from Iran.

A week later, Iran’s IRGC shot down an intruding American spy drone in the country’s Southern coastal province of Hormozgan.

In a statement issued early on June 20, the IRGC said the US Navy MQ4-C Triton surveillance drone was brought down by its Air Force near the Kouh-e Mobarak region — which sits in the central district of Jask County — after the aircraft violated Iranian airspace.

A month later, the US ramped up military propaganda against Iran, claiming the US forces “may have brought down” a second Iranian drone, while failing to procure any evidence for bringing down the first one despite claiming to be in possession of its footage.

Iran has asserted that all of its drones are accounted for but CENTCOM Commander Gen. Kenneth McKenzie claimed in an interview with CBS News on July 23 that he was “confident” about the first one.

"We're confident we brought down one drone; we may have brought down a second," McKenzie said, referring to the USS Boxer's encounter with an unmanned aircraft allegedly belonging to Iran.

McKenzie’s comments stepped up Washington’s baseless claims for which it has released no footage so far.

Moving between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the USS Boxer is said to have used electronic measures to take down a drone that the US claims was being operated by Iran.

Iran has denied that it has lost any of its drones in a military confrontation with the US.

Commander of the IRGC’s Aerospace Division Amir-Ali Hajizadeh has called Donald Trump’s claim “a lie”.

“The lie told by Trump was so big that we believed it at first that they had been able to shoot down one of our drones,” Hajizadeh noted on July 21.

Iran’s IRGC also released footage captured by an Iranian drone flying over the Strait of Hormuz and monitoring a United States Navy vessel, belying the claim.

A few hours after Trump's allegation, Iran moved to reject his claim with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi saying in a tweet, “We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else.”

National Security Advisor John Bolton told reporters at the White House on July 20 that the Trump administration may release video of the incident later. But this never happened

In early July, a new phase of tensions was opened after the UK joined the US in the “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.

British marines and Gibraltar police seized an Iranian tanker off the Southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula on July 4. Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo claimed that the ship was transporting crude oil to Syria “in violation” of the EU sanctions placed on Damascus. Washington has applauded the move, hailing it as a sign that Europe is on board with the US’ unilateral sanctions against Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the “illegal move” of London and described it as “tantamount to piracy”. Tehran accused the UK of doing Washington’s bidding and helping the US attempt to stifle the Islamic Republic’s oil exports, rejecting London's claim that the supertanker was carrying crude for Syria.

On July 16, Ayatollah Khamenei slammed Britain’s illegal seizure of the oil tanker, warning London of a pending response to the seizure of the supertanker that he referred to as a case of "piracy".

Then in Mid-July, the IRGC naval forces seized a foreign ship smuggling fuel in the Persian Gulf, according to a statement by the public relations office of the IRGC Navy's first zone. The foreign vessel was smuggling a million liters of fuel from Iran and was seized in Iranian waters South of Lark island. Yet, a statement issued by the IRGC on Thursday denied that any other foreign ship had been seized during the last week as claimed by the western media. The statement reiterated that the ship had been seized for "smuggling fuel from Iran", and no other reason.

Gibraltar's Supreme Court ruled on July 19 that the Iranian tanker seized by Britain's Royal Marines can be detained for 30 more days. The court's decision came a day after a senior Gibraltar's official described as “constructive” talks with Iran, raising hopes that the tanker would be released imminently.

Hours after the court’s new decision, the IRGC's Navy impounded, a British-flagged oil tanker, Stena Impero, when it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz en route to Saudi Arabia "for failing to respect international maritime rules”.

"UK tanker ship, Stena Impero, has been detained by the vessels unit of the IRGC Navy's First Naval Zone at the request of the Ports and Maritime Organization's office of Hormuzgan province for disregarding international maritime rules and regulations as it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz this afternoon," the statement by the IRGCN public relations said.

The statement added that the ship had been escorted to the Iranian coastal waters in Hormuzgan province and its control had been transferred to the Ports and Maritime Organization for further legal procedures and investigations.

A statement by Stena Impero shipping firm had announced there were 23 crew onboard the UK ship, stating that there had been no report on any harm or injury to the crew members since the vessel came under detention by the Iranian forces.

Director-General of the Ports and Maritime Organization's office in Hurmuzgan province stated that he filed a request for the seizure of the British tanker by the IRGCN after reports on its risky moves that made the vessel prone to accident.

Sources told FNA that the British ship had switched off its tracking systems in violation of maritime rules and regulations and was making an entry from the exit point of the Strait of Hormuz in the South, disregarding the established procedures that require all entries be made through the Northern pass.

Director General of the Ports and Maritime Organization's office of Hormuzgan province Allah MoradAfifipour stated Saturday that the British oil tanker was seized because it ignored calls from a fishing boat after an accident in the waterway.

"The British oil tanker, Stena Impero, had an accident with a fishing boat on its way and according to the law, the reason and other issues related to the accident should be studied," Afifipour told FNA.

He added that sailors on the damaged fishing boat had contacted the British vessel, but the tanker had ignored their calls.

"When the British vessel did not respond to the fishing vessel, they informed Ports and Maritime Organization's office of Hormuzgan province according to the legal procedures," Afifipour said, noting that his office had requested the Judiciary and the IRGC to stop the British tanker.

Also, the UK owned tanker, MV Mesdar, operating under Liberian flag was stopped by Iran's naval patrols in the Strait of Hormuz on the same day after it started oil leaks in the waterway.

The ship was sent back to the international waters to continue its voyage after a short time and after it was warned to show full respect for environmental regulations and harmless navigation.

Senior military officials also rejected reports by some western media outlets claiming that the Liberian-flagged tanker had been seized, stressing that 'Stena Impero' was the only foreign ship under Iranian custody.

Then, Iran in a letter to the UN Security Council defended the country's seizure of the British oil tanker, describing it as necessary to protect safety of the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran’s letter to the United Nations Security Council said that "Stena Impero" collided with a small fishing boat on July 19, and badly injured its crew, some of whom remain in critical condition.

Afterwards, instead of responding to distress calls from the boat and radio communications from Iranian authorities, the British tanker turned off its transponder and "dangerously" changed course in the direction of incoming ships, the letter read.

That is when, according to the letter, Iran's IRGC intervened and took the ship and its crew into custody.

Tehran asserted in the letter that the seizure, which took place in accordance with international regulations, was necessary for protecting the safety and the order of maritime navigation at the Strait of Hormuz strategic choke point.

According to the letter, Iranian judicial authorities had ordered local officials to investigate the tanker's violations, including its environmental damage as well as the extent of the damage it has done to the fishing boat and its crew.

The letter also rejected claims by the UK government in a recent letter to the UNSC, where it had claimed the IRGC forces acted illegally by approaching the Stena Impero in "Omani territorial waters".

Iran's permanent mission at the UN said in its letter that everything it did was aimed at upholding international law and ensuring secure navigation in the Persian Gulf.

The recent moves by foreign powers in the Middle East such as US sanctions on Tehran's oil, UK seizure of Iranian supertanker, as well as, "sabotage operations" on oil ships have intensified the turmoil in the region and the turmoil in the international energy market, affecting global crude prices in recent months.

Iran Reiterates Support for Peace Initiatives in Yemen

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif stressed that Tehran is committed to its support for Yemeni-Yemeni peace talks, renewing his country’s call for an immediate halt to 4.5 years of a bloody Riyadh-led war on the impoverished country.

In a Sunday meeting with Spokesman for Yemen’s Ansarullah movement Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Zarif said that the solution to Yemen’s crisis is political and the Islamic Republic backs Yemeni-Yemeni peace negotiations as well as the full implementation of a UN-brokered agreement reached in the Swedish capital city of Stockholm in 2018.

During the meeting, Iran's top diplomat voiced regret for the “grave humanitarian situation” in Yemen and expressed Tehran’s preparedness to deliver relief aid to the war-inflicted country.

Zarif also expressed sorrow over the killing of innocent Yemeni civilians and the years-long siege of the country, calling for an immediate halt to the Saudi-led aggression and removal of anti-humanitarian blockade against the war-ravaged country.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen since March 2015 to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed more than 20,000 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children. Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with more than 22 million people in need and is seeing a spike in needs, fueled by ongoing conflict, a collapsing economy and diminished social services and livelihoods. The blockade on Yemen has smothered humanitarian deliveries of food and medicine to the import-dependent state.

The UN has repeatedly criticized the Saudi-UAE-led military coalition's bombing campaign and placed it on a blacklist of child rights violators last year.

A UN panel has also compiled a detailed report of civilian casualties caused by the Saudi military and its allies during their war against Yemen, saying the Riyadh-led coalition has used precision-guided munitions in its raids on civilian targets.

FM Zarif Urges Muslims to Unite against Anti-Palestinians Crimes

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif posted a photo showing Israeli military forces attacking women in al-Aqsa mosque in Palestine, and called upon Muslims from all over the world to get united to put an end to Palestinians’ sufferings.

"The crime shown in this photo was but one perpetrated on al-Aqsa this morning—on our holy day," Zarif wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday.

The top diplomat blasted the Israeli regime for continuing to commit crimes against the Palestinians in Palestine, and said Muslims have the power to end the tyranny.

He added, "The same terrorists are hoping to impose #HumiliationoftheCentury on Palestinians."

"We Muslims have the power to end this tyranny, but only if we unite," Zarif reiterated.

On Saturday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, in a message to the great congregation of pilgrims to this year’s edition of Hajj rituals, called upon Muslims to take advantage of the event to promote awareness against the harms of the so-called Deal of the Century for Palestinians.

“The ploy of Deal of the Century prepared by the oppressive US, and its treasonous cohorts, is a crime against human society, and not just the Palestinian nation,” Ayatollah Khamenei said, in his message, on the advent of the start of the Hajj rituals of this year.

“We are inviting everyone to actively participate in overcoming this deception by the enemy, and with the power and help of God, we consider this and all other ruses by the arrogant front doomed to failure against the efforts, and faith of the Resistance front,” the Leader underlined.

“Today, one of the most important issues of the Muslim world is Palestine, which is at the top of Muslims’ political issues, regardless of their school of thought, race, and language,” he stressed.

“The greatest injustice in recent history has happened in Palestine. In this painful affair, all that a nation had—their land, homes, farms, belongings, dignity, and identity—was confiscated. With God’s assistance, this nation has not surrendered to defeat, and has not given up, and today, they are on the battlefields more enthusiastic, and braver than yesterday. But the ultimate outcome requires assistance from all Muslims,” Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted.

Last month, Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that remarks by Hezbollah Chief Seyed Hassan Nasrallah about saying prayers at Beit al-Muqaddas is a completely achievable goal.

"That Mr. Seyed Hassan Nasrallah says 'I will pray at Masjid al-Aqsa (Al-Aqsa mosque), God willing,' is an absolutely practical and achievable aspiration for us. If we all act upon our duties, the divine promise will definitely come true," Ayatollah Khamenei said in a meeting with a Palestinian delegation headed by Saleh al-Arouri, the Deputy Chairman of the politburo of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Tehran on July 22.

"The victory of the people of Palestine and the return of this holy land to the World of Islam is not a strange and unattainable matter. 40 years ago no one could believe that in Iran — which was the center of US's influence and aspirations — a religious government would emerge and the Israeli embassy in Tehran turn into Palestine’s embassy," he added.

A report says: "The noise survey establishes to the satisfaction of the council's Environmental Health Officer that the use can occur without giving rise to unacceptable implications for neighbouring amenity.

"This is subject to no amplified external noise and the improvements to the boundary treatment, specifically to the northern boundary.

"Conditions will be imposed in this regard, and the agent has confirmed agreement."

The condition stipulates: "There shall be no amplified external noise at the application premises."

The mosque is relocating from its current location nearby at Woodview, North Avenue.

Syrian Army Liberates Tahrir Al-Sham’s Strategic Military Base in Idlib

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army continued its military operations in Northern Syria, and regained full control over the strategic town of al-Hobait in Southern Idlib after advancing from several directions.

The Damascus Army engaged in heavy clashes with Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at, Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) terrorists in Southern Idlib, and captured al-Tamane’h Farms and the town of Mugar al-Humam near al-Hobait after retaking the town of Sakik.

The Syrian Army troops, backed by artillery and missile units, attacked the terrorists’ military positions in al-Hobait and took full control of the region after fierce clashes with the terrorists.

The Arabic-language website of the Russian Sputnik News Agency, meantime, reported that at least 60 terrorists, originating from different countries, were killed by the Syrian Army in military operation to liberate al-Hobait.

A military source also announced that the Syrian Army is making advances in the Eastern and Western directions in a move to lay siege on other terrorist groups in the towns of Kafar Zita, al-Latamaneh and Mourek in Northern Hama.

The Syrian Army advances come after it took control of al-Hobait town which is regarded as the gate to Khan Sheikhoun.

He noted that the Syrian Army’s artillery and missile units are currently pounding the terrorists’ movements in the town of al-Tamaneh, North of Sakik town.

In a relevant development on Saturday, the Syrian Army regained control of a strategic region and the nearby hills in Southern Idlib.

The army forces, backed by artillery and missile fire, engaged in heavy clashes with Tahrir al-Sham terrorists in the town of al-Tamane'ah in the Eastern parts of Khan Sheikhoun on Saturday, taking back control of the strategic town of Sakik and adjacent hills.

Meantime, a field source said that other Syrian army troops also clashed with militants in al-Latamineh and al-Habit in Western Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib, adding that the army intends to surround the terrorists in Southern Idlib and facilitate the operations in Idlib and Hama by launching concurrent operations in several fronts, driving wedges to separate the region into several parts and cutting the militants' supply lines.

He added that the Syrian army has also dispatched a large number of forces and military equipment to Atshan, Abuda Ali and Abu Omar in Eastern Hama and Southern Idlib.

The Syrian army kicked off an offensive to impose full control over the terrorists’ strategic base in the town of al-Hobait in Southern Idlib on Saturday.

The Syrian Army units conducted artillery and missile attacks on terrorists’ military positions in al-Hobait in Southern Idlib, inflicting heavy losses and casualties on the militants.

Meantime, the Syrian Army troops engaged in heavy clashes with the terrorists in Um al-Khalakhil and al-Zarzour region in the Southeastern outskirts of Idlib.

A battlefield source pointed to the Syrian Army’s efforts to liberate al-Hobait town in Southern Idlib, and said once the Syrian army completes control over this region which is the gate to Idlib, it will be able to take control of the city of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib and the international Damascus-Aleppo road.

He also referred to the Syrian Army plan to lay siege to the remaining areas controlled by terrorists in Northern Hama, and said that the Syrian army troops will manage to take full control of Sahl al-Ghab region in Northwestern Hama once they liberate the town of al-Hobait.

Syrian Army Makes Advances in LattakiaAfter Opening New Front

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army pushed terrorists back from several regions on Saturday after opening new fronts in NortheasternLattakia as it kicked off new military operations in Northern Hama and Southern Idlib.

A Syrian Army source said government troops have opened a new route towards Kabani strategic hilltops in NortheasternLattakia as they continued clashes with terrorists in Northern and Northwestern Hama as well as Southern and Eastern Idlib.

The source noted that the Syrian Army troops, backed up by artillery and missile units and also the country’s air force, engaged in fierce clashes with Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) in Tal al-Zaviqat near Kabani Hilltops, inflicting heavy losses on the terrorists.

The English-language al-Masdar news website, meantime, reported that the Syrian Army troops managed to impose full control over three out of five military spots, including Hilltop 121 near Kabani in NortheasternLattakia.

In a relevant development in mid-June, ringleader of Tahrir al-Sham Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has reportedly arrived in the strategic town of Kabani in NortheasternLattakia to take command of the terrorist group in the battle against the Syrian Army over the group's main stronghold in the region.

The Syrian Army backed by the heavy artillery and missile units attacked Tahrir al-Sham's main military base and engaged in very fierce clashes with the terrorists in JabalZawikatregion where Kabani is located in NortheasternLattakia after it made advances in several axes.

Meantime, battlefield sources pointed to the collapse of defense lines of Tahrir al-Sham and Turkistani Party South of Kabani, and said the Syrian Army has made advances there.

Meantime, several battlefield sources confirmed that al-Jolani has arrived in Northern Lattakia to take charge of commanding terrorists in battle against the Syrian Army and prevent the army's further advances.

The Syrian Army plans to seize vast areas from the towns of Jabal al-Akrad in Northern Lattakia and Sahl al-Ghab region in Northern Hama as well as Jisr al-Shoghour and also Lattakia-Aleppo Highway up to Ariha in the suburbs of Idlib after taking control of Kabani.

Iraqi Expert: Crashed US Drone Missioned with Targeting Hashd Al-Shaabi

TEHRAN (FNA)- US aircraft are flying over Iraq's territory to collect intel on popular forces across the country, a senior Iraqi expert said, adding that the drone that crashed this week was on a mission to stage a raid on Hashad al-Shaabi forces.

Kazzem al-Haaj told the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website on Sunday that violation of Iraq's airspace by the US forces is nothing new.

"The US drones have always flown with the aim of collecting intelligence on Hashd al-Shaabi forces and their controlled areas as well as the regions where the terrorists are deployed to give them protection and security," he added.

Al-Haaj also said the US spy flights come as American army troops have widened moves and stretched their presence towards Syria.

An Iraqi source revealed on Saturday that the US spy drone which crashed in Northwestern Baghdad was carrying missiles.

An informed Iraqi source told the Arabic-language Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the surveillance drone, which was armed with missiles, crashed in the farms of al-Rezwaniyeh region in Northwestern Baghdad near the Iraqi capital's international airport on Tuesday.

Asked whether it had come under attack, the source ruled it out, saying it likely crashed due to a technical malfunction.

Meantime, the Arabic-language Boratha news website quoted a military expert as saying that the US was forced to confirm reports of its drone crash in Baghdad after two days.

He noted that the Americans' claim that the drone was unharmed contradicts with its malfunction, saying that it strengthens the speculations that it has been attacked by electronic warfare tools which made it lose the return route and crash near Baghdad.

The revelation that the aircraft was armed with missiles has come to grab media attention as there are still outstanding questions unanswered about an air raid on a military base of the Iraqi popular forces last month.

An unmanned drone on July 19 bombed a base operating by Hashd al-Shaabi (Iraqi popular forces) in Iraq with sources saying two people were wounded.

“The Al-Shuhada base of the Hashed al-Shaabi in the Amerli region was hit at dawn… by an unidentified drone, wounding two people,” the Iraqi military said in a statement.

The Arabic-language al-Etejah news channel quoted special sources in Nineveh province as saying that before the attack against the Hashd al-Shaabi base in Amerli, a US spy plane conducted reconnaissance operations against the Hashd al-Shaabi and Iraqi army forces in the region.

The source said that the spy plane carried out reconnaissance operations over Sanjarmountain and the Southern areas of the region.

Physicians Write Letter to Nigerian Gov't on Zakzaky's Deteriorated Health Conditions

TEHRAN (FNA)- A large number of physicians from seven states in a letter to the Nigerian government called for the transfer of jailed Shiite leader Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky to a well-equipped hospital due to his critical conditions.

A group of doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq in a letter to the Nigerian government pointed to Sheikh Zakzaky's physical conditions, and asked the Nigerian government to transfer him to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.

The full text of the letter is as follows:

"In the name of God, The healer

From the community of Doctors

To the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Buhari.

In the past several months, the world has constantly received troubling news regarding the health of one of the prominent figures in Nigeria, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Both Skaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife are kept in prison and the health status of both of them is very alarming.

We have chosen to be doctors even after knowing that this job is very difficult and troublesome, but we chose to save people's lives and preferred the health of the society over our personal interests.

According to the medical reports regarding the health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky:

1. He is suffering from a total blindness in the left eye, and is also suffering from vision problems in the right eye including glaucoma and progressive macular atrophy. According to the diagnosis of the visiting physicians, Shaikh Zakzaky will lose his vision sooner or later if the current circumstances do not change.

2. He has shown symptoms of Ischemic heart disease which can lead to Myocardial Infraction.

3. He is also suffering from severe cervical spondylosis which has resulted to nerve root compression and symptoms are progressive causing insomnia.

4. The experiments show that he has heavy metal toxicity including Lead and Cadmium. Laboratory tests that are performed on May 31st, 2019 show that blood lead level is 171.94µg/dl. Later on June 18th, 2019 this level was reported to be 231.48µg while in the last laboratory test the blood lead level was three times more than the toxicity level (grade 5 of poisoning).

Based on the points highlighted above, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky should be transferred to a well- equipped medical center that has Neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist and low vision expert, cardiologist, orthopedist and neurologist. Also he may need to have a surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

We, doctors of different nationalities cannot take the health of any human for granted. This is something that is inherent in our obligation as doctors. Ignoring the critical health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky can end up in irreparable consequences.

We request the government and parliament of Nigeria to immediately transfer him to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

Sheikh Zakzaky, a prominent Shiite leader, has been in detention along with his wife for close to four years despite the deterioration of his health conditions.

Last Tuesday, in an exclusive interview with FNA, Dr.PourrahimNajafabadi, MD, said Sheikh Zakzaky needs to be cured by an experienced medical team of physicians in a specialized multi-specialty hospital outside Nigeria, since there is no such medical center in the African country.

"With the current physical condition of the Sheikh, especially the virulent lead poisoning, Sheikh’s life is seriously at risk by delayed treatment. Meanwhile, there is a need for special medical care even in case of complete medical treatment. There is serious risk to Sheikh’s life if he is kept under detention,” said Najafabadi, the founder and spokesperson of a group of expert physicians who have volunteered to treat Sheikh Zakzaky.

British children of Islamic State members will not be brought back to UK: Report

UK government decides it would be too dangerous to send military or civilian personnel to rescue them from Syria

The fate of such children gained attention after the birth and subsequent death of a son born to Shamima Begum (Screengrab/Daily Mail)

By MEE and agencies

Published date: 12 August 2019

The children of British members of Islamic State who have UK citizenship will not be brought back to Britain from Syria as it would be too dangerous to rescue them, the UK government has reportedly decided.

High Court backs removal of UK man’s citizenship over joining Islamic State group

Javid was said to have decided that it was not safe to dispatch military or civilian personnel to rescue the babies and minors from camps in northern Syria.

Officials looked at options to allow relatives living in Britain to adopt the children, as well as provisions in the care system.

However, there were concerns that parents who had been stripped of their British citizenship could use their repatriated children to reclaim citizenship under human rights laws.

'Callous and inhumane'

The fate of such children gained attention after the birth and subsequent death of a son, Jarrah, born to Shamima Begum, who ran away from London with two other schoolgirls aged 15 to join IS in 2015.

Heavily pregnant, she was found in a refugee camp in Syria in February where she pleaded to come home to Britain.

Javid, however, revoked her citizenship, with the opposition Labour party describing the baby’s subsequent death as the result of a “callous and inhumane” decision by the government.

Among other organisations that were critical of the move, Save the Children said the death was “avoidable”.

Citizenship can only be removed from dual nationals and where there is a “risk to national security” as to leave a person stateless is illegal under international law.

Javid argued he did not believe that depriving Begum of her nationality would make her stateless as he believed she was entitled to Bangladeshi citizenship.

However, Bangladesh's foreign minister has said that Begum could be hanged for terrorism charges if she lands in Bangladesh.

About 900 British citizens left the UK to join the self-declared IS "caliphate" in Syria and Iraq, of whom 400 were thought to have returned as of March this year, according to The Times.

At least 10 percent have been prosecuted and about 150 are thought to have died, it said.

In April, a Home Office minister Susan Williams said in a written response that "a small number" of British children had been allowed back into the UK over the past year via third countries.

Williams gave no further detail on the age of the children or whether they had come back from territory controlled by the Islamic State group.

However, she said it was the government's stance that it would not put the lives of UK officials at risk to assist individuals who left Britain to join "proscribed terrorist groups".

Suspect in Norway mosque shooting not admitting guilt, says lawyer

ReutersAugust 12, 2019

The man suspected of shooting at people inside a Norwegian mosque on Saturday and of separately killing his stepsister does not admit to any crime and is not speaking with investigators, his lawyer said on Monday.

“He is exercising his right not to be interrogated,” his defence attorney, Unni Fries, told Reuters. “He is not admitting any guilt.”

A court is expected to rule later on Monday on a police request to detain the 21-year-old for the next several weeks.

Police said on Sunday they were investigating whether the man was guilty of breaching anti-terrorism laws when shots were fired at the al-Noor Islamic Centre near the Norwegian capital, although no one was hit in the attack.

The man, who is also suspected of killing his 17-year old stepsister before the attack, was eventually overpowered by a member of the mosque and held down by several people before his arrest.

Dominic Cummings Is Reshuffling Government Special Advisers As His "Jihad OnSpAds" Gets Underway

Several aides have lost their jobs in the cull, government sources told BuzzFeed News.

Posted on August 12, 2019

Number 10 Chief of Staff Dominic Cummings arrives at Downing Street

Boris Johnson's chief aide Dominic Cummings has begun a reshuffle of special advisers, with several ministerial aides expected to leave the government, BuzzFeed News can reveal.

Special advisers — known in Westminster as SpAds — are powerful taxpayer-funded political aides who work for ministers across Whitehall. Last week BuzzFeed News reported that Cummings had declared what one adviser dubbed a "jihad on SpAds", cracking down on what he perceived as a culture of leaking and disloyalty under Theresa May.

Multiple government sources said on Monday that a reshuffle of SpAds, organised by Cummings, was underway. Several aides have lost their jobs in the cull, government sources said.

Last week Luke Tryl, who was due to be appointed as an adviser to culture secretary Nicky Morgan, had his appointment blocked by Number 10.

Special advisers who served under the May government — and automatically had to reapply for jobs when Johnson became prime minister — are due to receive their new contracts on Monday or Tuesday, where they will be given details of their roles and new pay offers.

In a further cause of frustration among government aides, Helen MacNamara, the senior civil servant in charge of propriety and ethics at the cabinet office, has told them they will continue to be paid by their old departments in August and won't receive any pay rises until the end of September. One said they thought this was a sign Number 10 is planning for a snap election.

Special advisers told BuzzFeed News that paying them their old salaries despite them working in new jobs was an abuse of their employment rights. One said: "It's one of the worst examples of propriety and ethics you can imagine."

Aides have also been told they cannot take any holiday this summer, as the government steps up its preparations for Brexit.

Downing Street has been approached for comment.

Philip Manshaus smiled at photographers as he appeared on charges of murdering his stepsister and attempted act of terror

A man accused of shooting at worshippers in a mosque and murdering his teenage stepsister appeared in court with black eyes and wounds on his face and neck.

Philip Manshaus, who smiled at photographers, does not admit to any crime, his lawyer told reporters after a detention hearing.

Alleged far-right follower Manshaus was charged with murder and attempted act of terror after shots were fired inside the Al-Noor Islamic Centre on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway.

His 17-year-old stepsister was found dead in a separate location.

At the mosque, the gunman was overpowered by worshippers, including a 65-year-old who was injured, before officers arrived, according to police.

Saturday afternoon's shooting is being treated as an act of terrorism.

Police are initially seeking to hold Manshaus in custody for four weeks on suspicion of murder and breach of anti-terrorism law.

Investigators have said previously that the gunman was armed with multiple guns when shots were fired at worshippers inside the mosque in the Oslo suburb of Baerum.

Witnesses said the gunman was carrying two shotgun-like weapons and a pistol when he broke through a glass door and started shooting.
