Media Pressure, and the Muslim Personal Law Board میڈیا کا دباؤ اور مسلم پرسنل لاء بورڈ
    Shakeel Shamsi

    Women in Islam: Beyond Stereotypes
    Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

Too much of the thinking about Muslim women is done along predictable, clichéd lines. This is true of all shades of opinion, perception and scholarship .This opinion profiles  Muslim women in stubborn stereotypes: supposedly powerless and oppressed, behind walls and veils, demure, voiceless and silent figures, discriminated and bereft of even basic rights. This picture keeps reinforcing itself, largely because this is how the Western media caricatures women in Islam.....

It is pertinent to note here that the Quran has not dealt with every possible issue, but has chosen to illustrate only on matters for which there can be no single objective matrix. It has, however, dealt with the issue of divorce in depth. The Quran grants equal right to divorce to both men and women, the only difference being that a man divorces a woman, while a woman demands divorce from her husband....

    Redefining the Battle Against Terrorists
    James A. Lyons

The Obama-Clinton disdain for naming the real enemy allowed them to pretend that the Islamic State (ISIS) was the only problem in Syria and Iraq. Meanwhile, groups with an identical jihad ideology got a pass. Al Qaeda was barely mentioned. Arms continued to flow via Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey to a rogues gallery of supposed “moderates” — Jaish al-Islam, Ahrar al-Sham, Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki, the Free Idlib Army and the Islamic Front. These jihadists operate mainly in alliance with al Qaeda, but sometimes with ISIS...

The Misrepresentation of the Quran through Mistranslation
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The major source of mistranslation of the Quran is the mistranslation by every translator of the Quran of the word “Kafaru” as “disbeliever”. A disbeliever is understood as “those who are not followers of Prophet Muhammad” although even this meaning of disbeliever is incorrect. The Quran does not use the word Kafaru in the sense of “disbeliever” even in a single verse! As a matter of fact, the Quran makes it unmistakably clear that Kafaru means not a disbeliever but one of the following:...

Break Up Pakistan to Resolve Kashmir Jihad
    Tufail Ahmad, New Age Islam

In present times, nations are invaded by ideas emerging from internal and external sources. There are two recent examples of this argument. One, Syrian refugees arriving in Europe have practically invaded local cultures, disturbing the rule of law in European countries. Two, in India television debates about pellets guns have emerged as more powerful than bullets, thereby posing a threat to peace in Kashmir. The tragedy of the Indian mind is that, in responding to the war in Kashmir created by the Pakistani-jihadi mind – it is seeking a political solution. In this context, discussed below are some difficult ways to resolve the Kashmir issue but first look at a brief history of the conflict....

    Theism Vs Atheism
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Without the moral precepts we would have remained savages. If human thinking could produce moral precepts, philosophy would have been rich in moral precepts. Without moral precepts, we would have not reached our present state and without these we cannot maintain it either. If human thinking has failed to produce moral precepts, the claim of religions that have given us these precepts as being of divine origin is a very strong claim indeed. The Atheists ‘claim that everything is a result of the evolutionary process, is a weak one and not supported by facts...

Is a Dalit Muslim Unity Possible?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Thus in all probability, this alliance is going to be a political alliance of convenience. It would have been much better if this alliance would also become a social alliance between Dalits and Muslims. But for that to happen, Muslims have to engage with the entrenched caste practices and ideas within their own community. It is all very well to say that Islam does not recognise caste, but anyone who is familiar with Muslim society would say that Muslims are as casteist as the Hindu society.....

    Ijtihad, Rethinking Islam

If the Islamic medieval rationalism that acknowledged the universality of knowledge keeps on being proclaimed an apostasy, and if authenticity is limited down to a polarisation of the self and otherness, then Muslims of the 21st century will keep on being unsuccessful in embarking on modernity. That is why the recovery of reason is imperative for the Muslim mind to be successful.....

    Enjoining Good and Forbidding Wrong
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

This hadith talks about Taghayyur-E Munkar, which means rectifying or remedying a wrong. The Arabic word Taghayyur means ‘replacement’. Hence, in the above hadith, the word Taghayyur means replacing a condition of evil or wrong with a condition that is not evil or wrong. In other words, this hadith ordains the reforming of a certain condition, not engaging in conflict and causing destruction....

Islamic Scholars Must Open the Gates of Ijtihad; Reflect Creatively On Islamic Teachings and Their Applications, Particularly Islamic Political Theology
    Waris Mazhari

In part, the intellectual crisis of present-day Muslims can be traced to the suppression of the movement of Islamic rationalism by the traditionalist, orthodox Ulema in the early centuries of Islam. In the conflict between reason (Aql) and text (Nass), the suppression of reason played a major role in the ensuing intellectual stagnation of Muslims. A second factor for this intellectual crisis of Muslims was the supposed closing of the ‘doors’ of Ijtihad’, creative reflection on and application of Islamic teachings in new contexts...

Beyond the Moderate and Radical in Indian Islam
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

The regime of reform became common to both the Barelvis and the Deobandis, following the model of early Islam which was adopted by them both. Science and Religion
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Speaking historically, belief without a good rational basis or evidence may have been a necessity in the past, but today, this is neither necessary nor a good thing. Today blind belief is more harmful than blind rejection but acceptance on a rational basis is not only good but indispensable to leading a truly “moral” life with values that are transcendental and not merely utilitarian.  Religion gave us concepts and moral principles that were far beyond the capacity of human minds to fully comprehend their utility and role in leap frogging their society on the scale of civilization.....

Islam and the Future of Tolerance

The Quran, like any other text (religious as well as other) can be interpreted in diverse, often mutually-contradictory, ways. If radical Islamists champion a violence-driven, politics-centric interpretation of their faith, many Muslim reformists articulate diametrically different interpretations of Islam, which are rooted in a quest for peace. What people read into a text depends heavily on their cultural and ideological baggage....

God Is Not a Khomeini: The Islam of Identity Should Yield To the Islam of Truth
    Shajahan Madampat

I believe that the Islam of identity should yield to the Islam of truth. The latter can coexist with other truths. The former, however, is, by its very nature, belligerent and bellicose. It is the Islam of war, not the Islam of peace. Two identities would fight each other, while two truths would cooperate.”

Islam, as an inclusive faith and as a humane culture, is facing existential threats not from its arch rivals but from its ardent followers. The solution therefore is to seek endogenous remedies because, on the one hand, imagining a future beyond faith is too utopian a dream to achieve and, on the other, like other traditions, the history and textual corpus of Islam could offer ample resources to self-rejuvenate and fight the internal decay.....

On A good human being is identified as kind even towards his enemies. He does not deprive them of the rights that they deserve as his human counterparts. He does not punish his enemies any more than would be just, but if possible tries to forgive them. Such was the blessed attribute that the holy prophets of Allah Almighty –including Sheath, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and the final messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon all of them)— brought to the world so as to encourage forgiveness, good treatment and justice towards the entire humanity. .....
