    Islamic Ideology

Suffice to say, one can never truly know or appreciate that which is infinite. Any knowledge when contrasted to God’s knowledge, pales in comparison and is ignorance! We even see this attitude adopted by our Holy Imams in their supplications to Allah. They, whom are the inheritors of the Prophet’s knowledge, the trustees of Allah confess their ignorance and incapability towards truly knowing and praising Allah.....

Sectarian Discourse in Iraq Is Reinforced as Iraq’s Sunnis Eye Post-IS Future under Regional Cover
    Omar Sattar

As Sunni political parties move closer to adopting a unified Sunni stance on federalism and national reconciliation, and with Turkey proclaimed as a sponsor for Iraqi Sunnis (just as Iran is sponsoring Shiite parties), sectarian discourse in Iraq is reinforced. Even though some progress was made on the path toward settlement and Iran’s influence was successfully curbed by the US and Arab countries, the absent role of Iraqi national and civil parties on the political level is likely to serve the current sectarian and ethnic divide....

Britain Suffers Its Worst Terrorist Attack Since 2005

Complex plots that involve detailed planning, numerous accomplices and the acquisition of guns or explosives offer plenty of opportunities for intelligence agencies to thwart them. But the kind of attack that Islamic State (IS) has become known for in the West is much cruder. But if it is an echo, it may be a muted one. There Is No Harm in Accepting the Defeat

Instead of blaming EVMs, excusing the split of Muslim votes or the negative impact of appeals made by Muslim clerics, complaining against non-cooperation of social organizations, the defeated parties and leaders had best do their self-introspection. They should think why did the policy of crying “the wolf came, the wolf came” not work? They need to think why could they not make any solid objective of the election for preventing BJP from coming to power? Why did Rashtriya Ulema Council, All India Ulema and Mashaikh Board and Shiite clerics appeal for casting vote against them? What did the defeated parties do? Did they take care of welfare of Muslims or simply fill the laps of the Muslim leaders instead? ….

    Islamic Sharia Laws

Reform India's Muslim Personal Law, Breach the Stagnation in Muslim Religious Thought, Use the Opportunity to Work out A New Islamic Theology of Peace, Pluralism and Gender Equality
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

It is for the government of India to take a call in the matter. Why should Indian Muslim women not deserve the protection of Islam provided to their counterparts in Pakistan, Bangladesh and elsewhere, practically in the entire Islamic world, except Saudi Arabia. ... Why should Indian Muslims suffer the indignities imposed by the British in our land under an Anglo-Mohammedan law? ...

A debate kick-started by Personal Law reforms may then provide us an opportunity to take the issue of theological reforms to other areas too, which are far more important to the community and our religion. Personal Law debate would bring out the obscurantism of our ulema to the fore. It would bring out their lack of concern for Islam or Muslims.

We have to virtually create, find acceptance for and popularise a new Islamic theology of peace, coexistence, inclusiveness, pluralism and gender equality.

The stagnation, total lack of any theological debate, in the Muslim community, just has to be breached and broken. The stagnation suits the Islamist extremists who have a very coherent, well-designed, well-thought-out theology of violence and exclusivism, hatred and intolerance, as well as gender inequality and discrimination.

Islam’s ‘Golden Age’: Rationalist Disciplines In Islam Survived Well Into The 16th and 17th Centuries
    Ateeb Gul

Far from being just an exercise in historical pedantry, an accurate portrayal of this historical period has real ramifications for the Islamic world today. On the Self Acquired Importance of the Ulema
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

The ‘golden age’ of Islam tells us that there was always a tension between the Ulema and the philosophers. The latter did not take them seriously and at times publicly lambasted them for their limited understanding of how the world works. To make matters worse, there were poets whose favourite pastime was ridiculing the Ulema for the incoherence of their thoughts. Moreover, philosophers were Aalims in their own right: no one could accuse IbnSina or IbnRushd for not knowing religion. Indeed, in their own worlds there was hardly a distinction between the pursuit of religious and material knowledge....

Sultan Shahin Raises Triple Talaq Issue at UNHRC, Asks Muslims to Engage In Serious Rethinking Of Islamic Theology and Bring It In Line With the Needs of 21st Century
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

    Mr. President,

While the world’s attention is focused on violent extremism practised by a section of Muslims, gross violations of human rights are taking place in various Muslim societies in the name of religion. In a South East Asian country, the Arabic name of God is monopolised by Muslims. Non-Muslims using the traditional term Allah for God are punished. In a South Asian Muslim country thousands of Hindu and Christian girls, many under the age of 18, are abducted, forcibly converted to Islam, and then “married” to their abductors. In a Middle Eastern country, courts allow marriages of as small as 9-year-old girls and force them to consummate their “marriage” and live with their husbands. In my own country, India, Muslim husbands can utter the word talaq, meaning divorce, thrice in a row, and legally throw their wives out of their homes in less than a minute.

While these are gross violations of human rights, they also amount to denigrating the religion of Islam. All these and many other similar social evils and criminal acts including terrorism are practiced as if they have been ordained by Islamic scriptures. This calls for deep introspection in the Muslim community. We Muslims should not allow our religion to be hijacked in this fashion.

Mr. President, I would like to make a request, through you, to the representatives of Muslim countries in the Council. Dear Sirs, Madams, Please start a serious dialogue with theologians in your countries and ask them to open the gates of Ijtihad, the creative re-thinking. This was not only permitted, but ordained by God, in Islam’s primary scripture, the holy Quran, as no other Prophet was to come after Mohmmad (saw). We Muslims must revisit our theology in the light of the needs of the 21st century. We are not living in the 7th century and can neither fight those early battles nor organise our societies in that medieval fashion....

Facing The Jihadist Challenge: Muslims Need To Refute Jihadis’ Xenophobic, Supremacist, Millenarian Thesis And Focus On Islamic Pluralism, Says Sultan Shahin At UNHRC In Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Facing the brutalities of Islamist terror, while President Obama will not go beyond calling it violent extremism, the head of Sunni Islam's oldest seat of learning, Jamia al-Azhar admitted in a counter-terrorism conference in Mecca that extremism was caused by “corrupt interpretations of Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad”, and Islamic curriculums needed to change.

This call for reform, coming from Jamia Al-Azhar, is gratifying. But a half-hearted approach to reform will not work. The problems Muslims face are very basic and cannot be solved with mere tinkering with text-books. The global Muslim community will have to introspect. One question repeatedly asked, for instance, is about the contextual verses of the holy Quran that are utilised by Jihadists to brainwash our youth. Jihadists present these contextual verses as an eternal guide for Muslims.

One would imagine that the followers of Islam who believe, and many certainly do, that Islam is a religion of spirituality, peace, coexistence and tolerance, would be up in arms against the Islamic State. But while routine denunciations from some sections do come occasionally, there is no outrage visible in the Muslim society. The world cannot help noticing that while tens of thousands of Muslims come out on streets to demonstrate the moment there is an allegation of so-called blasphemy against any one, hardly any Muslim would protest at the myriad brutalities perpetrated by Islamist terrorists.

Clearly there is something wrong, some disconnect, some deeper and more complex phenomenon at work than what can be understood from a superficial look at the issue. Instead of expressing outrage, we find thousands of Muslim young men and women running from their comfortable homes, private schools and cushy jobs to fight and join in the brutalities of the so-called Islamic State. Some 12,000 Muslim young men and women are said to have joined so far from 80 countries……

Don’t Let Baqr Eid Qurbani Descend Into Blood Orgy
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Prophet Mohammad was very emphatic in his views on animal sacrifice: “if you MUST kill, kill without torture.” Unfortunately, this admonition is also ignored. The two million animals that were sacrificed in Saudi Arabia at the end of Hajj yesterday had been brought to the country in most horrible conditions, many of them dying en route.

I personally witnessed the torture animals go through when I was in Karachi on Baqr Eid, a few years ago. The whole city appeared to have turned into a slaughter house. One could hear the cries of goats and sheep for days before Eid, while they were still being traded in city squares and even in roundabouts on major arterial roads. The animals apparently knew what fate was awaiting them. It was the obscenity of the whole scene that I cannot forget. Baqr Eid, the holiest of days, had descended into an orgy of blood-letting, with the “devotion” that God requires completely missing.

The callousness we Muslims display towards animals would give the impression that the religion of Islam is indifferent to the fate of animals. In fact, Islam requires Muslims to protect, not just Human Rights, but HuqooqulIbaad or the rights of all creations of God.

HuqooqulIbaad is considered so important that it is given primacy even over Huqooq Allah or our duties towards God. While God may forgive us for our transgressions, given his Benevolent and Merciful nature, His creations will not even recognise us on the Day of Judgement. So we must fulfil our duties towards creations of God in this very world, since we cannot hope for forgiveness from them on the Day of Judgement.

Muslims should also remember the conduct of the Prophet in treating animals with kindness. On many occasions, during his journeys, he delayed prayers for the sake of first relieving the animals of their burden, and giving them food and water. He would refuse to lead prayers until animals were looked after first. He told several stories of people being forgiven all their sins for having shown consideration for a dog or a cat. According to Imam Abu Dawud, the Prophet forbade the hitting of animals on their faces and branding them. He also forbade sports based on animal fights.

With Our 7th Century Mind-Set, Can We Muslims Co-Exist With Other Religious Communities In Any Part Of The World?
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

The Holy Quran had asked Muslims to fight for the existence of all those worship houses, synagogues, churches, monasteries, temples where God is praised in abundance.

“…If God had not checked one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause); —for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). (Qur'an, 22:40)

You can see that here God makes the cause of protecting worship houses of all religious communities, “monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques,” as His own cause. But have you heard any Muslim demanding Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or Bangladesh or any other Muslim country where religious minorities face persecution, to desist and follow the dictates of the Quran for religious freedom and diversity? I would have thought that if Muslims followed Quran, not to speak of the charter of The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we would be fighting Jihad against Saudi government to allow other religious communities to establish their own worship houses, against Pakistan and Bangladesh to stop persecuting Hindus, Christians and Ahmadis, etc.

Why It’s Not Wrong to Wish Muslims Merry Christmas
    Mustafa Akyol

Nonetheless, Islam and Christianity share a lot in their adoration for Isa and Maryam, Jesus and Mary. Muslims are in fact the only non-Christians on earth who believe that Jesus was born of a virgin. For centuries, Muslims have taken this as a literal truth. Medieval exegetes of the Quran debated details like how God’s spirit was “breathed” into Mary, taking as truth that the virgin birth was an act of God.....

While the list of brutal rulings can be extended, they do not constitute ‘Islamic religious ideology (Sharia), as they derive from the Sharia Law of Islam which is distinctly different from the Sharia of Islam. There is a subtle but irrefutable difference as explained below:

The Qur’an represents the divine Sharia of Islam (5:48) which is preserved verbatim as revealed over fourteen centuries ago, and is not influenced by the opinion of scholars, politicians, intellectuals, philosophers or any human agency. It uses the words Shira (technically Shir’ah) and Sharia (tech. Shar’iah) synonymously with the generic notion of a system or principles of law (5:48, 45:18). It expounds fundamental universal notions for just and harmonious governance of human society. These include, among others, justice, liberty, equity, good deeds, good neighbourly and inter-faith relations, sharing of wealth with the poor, eradication of slavery, deliverance of women from various entrenched taboos, empowerment of women use of intellect (Aql) and rational logic (Fiqha) , striving for excellence – to cite some major examples….

It is true that in many ways, Muslims are being led astray by those who should be guiding them on the right path. New Age Islam also has the same mission in its own way. Surely this cannot disqualify Ahmadiyyas from being accepted as Muslims. Most of the opponents of Ahmadiyyas are those who seem to have gone astray. Even someone like Abubakar Baghdadi is accepted as a Muslim, though what he stands for is the complete opposite of what the Holy Prophet taught. Mainstream Muslims should rethink the whole issue and try to form an independent judgement about Ahmedis....

Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Denying freedom of religion to Muslims and ex-Muslims, not to speak of non-Muslims, indeed has a long and gory history. The Quranic dictum (2: 256) la ikraha fid Deen [Let there be no compulsion in religion] did not leave an impact beyond the life of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). Forcible conversions started with the first Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) fighting Ridda (apostasy) wars against the tribes who had left Islam after the demise of the Prophet. They were all brought back to the fold of Islam or killed. Similar is the case of Khwarij in the time of the fourth caliph Hazrat Ali (RA) and beyond to neo-Khwarij today, also known as Wahhabi or Salafi.  These groups mostly kill Muslims whom they consider “heretics” including Shias and Ahmadis....

Radicalism Under The Banner Of Islam Is Mutation Of Islam Into A Cult Of Satan – So Muslims Must Create An Anti-Radicalization Narrative To Defeat And Disown It – Part 1
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

This article is in response to a recent press report according to which the President Elect of America, Donald Trump in his first telephonic conversation with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin identified Radical Islam as the no.1 threat to peace and security of the world in this era. Conceivably, by Radical Islam they meant the ideology of murderous takfirism - declaring an innocent person or group of people ‘Kafir’ and killing them individually, in small or large groups or en-masse in terror attacks. The vast majority of Muslims, the world over, may have been offended or even shocked by this remark as this amounts to putting a tag of terror on their faith for the heinous crimes committed by an infinitesimally small minority of its followers. But they must not take the words of these great leaders as anti-Islamic rhetoric and search their souls.....

Among many factors, social, economic, political, psychological, the one common feature is a brainwashing of vulnerable people on the basis of a supremacist, xenophobic, intolerant, exclusivist and totalitarian Jihadi theology. This is a blatant misuse of Islam, a spiritual path to salvation, that 1.6 billion Muslims believe, teaches peace, pluralism, co-existence and good neighbourliness.

But there has to be a reason why jihadi ideology has gained acceptance so quickly; why fatwas issued by reputed moderate scholars prove so ineffective? How are Jihadis able to create a 100 percent certainty in the minds of some Muslims that violence against innocent people, including Muslims, whom they consider infidel, will please God and lead them to heaven?

Success of jihadism lies in the fact that, at its core, the jihadi theology is not very different from the consensus theology of all other schools of Islamic thought. For instance, jihadists are able to misuse the intolerant, xenophobic, war-time verses of the holy Quran, as Muslims believe that all verses, regardless of the context, are of universal applicability. Indeed, the Islamic theology of consensus, taught in all madrasas, says that Quran is uncreated, meaning that it is just an aspect of God; and so, divine like God Himself.....
