The Sharia Law that governs traditional Islam is rooted in the legal opinions established by a group of Muslim jurists during about 150 to 250 years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad and is a varied sort according to different schools of thought. The majority – some 65 percent – of Muslims is Sunnis and they generally follow Hanafi and Shafii laws. There are more than six thousand Sharia laws in each of the Hanafi and Shafii Law books. Another point we need to note is that this Law draws on the Quran in a miniscule way that is rigid and non-contextual. Its main source is the Hadith literature, which is overtly and overwhelmingly biased against women....

Bizarre Response of a Section of Indian Muslims to the Historical Sufi Declaration of Peace, Pluralism and Moderation
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Islamic scholar and journalist Dr. Zafar ul-Islam Khan writes in The Milli Gazette: “Delhi’s Sufi Conference is seen as a conspiracy to pit Indian Muslims against one another…. Barelvis have been apolitical traditionally while Deobandis were active in politics even during the struggle against the Britishers. A section of Barelvis has now joined hands with BJP while many others maintain a distance from it….”This is a bizarre argument. Not to speak of the so-called Barelvis, all those who profess and practice the universal and egalitarian Sufi message are indisputably ‘apolitical Muslims.’ They don’t challenge any regime. What ‘politics’ can one see in the Sufi endeavour to stress the Islamic message of universal brotherhood, multiculturalism and pluralism, at a critical time when the world is facing terrorist strikes almost daily in the name of Islam? Isn’t it the duty of all Muslims to counter extremism and protect the image of Islam? -----

The environment in madrasas with their strict “Islamic” dress code, segregated classes and restrictions on personal freedoms promote insularity and separateness that is the antithesis of modernity. Co-education is banned in all madrasas run by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madrasa Education; even in states where there's no blanket ban, mixed classes are discouraged and women face huge pressure to follow “Islamic” practices.....

India Is Already A Shariah-Compliant State In The Matters Of Marriage, Divorce, Re-Marriage, Inheritance, Court Witnesses, Waqf, Gender Relations
Tufail Ahmad for New Age Islam

(Excerpts from this Book Release speech is posted exclusively on NewAgeIslam.com)

My mind has been focused on ideological questions: especially, the ideology of jihadism – or its soft version called Islamism which survives in the social and legal mainstream of free societies such as India. India is already a Shariah-compliant state in the matters of marriage, divorce, re-marriage, inheritance, court witnesses, Waqf, gender relations, etc. I ponder over how ideas coalesce into ideologies and rule over people's minds. For example, it takes a single Islamic cleric to shut up an entire village of Muslims. So, at issue is not the vast majority of Muslims, but the single cleric and his set of ideas, or his ideology that is consequential on a mass scale. Some argue that a fatwa is merely an Islamic opinion but for the vast majority of devout Muslims, it is more effective than a court order; it impacts their lives; and as a promise to God, it is consequential in their daily lives.

Islamic Reformation: Assumed To Be the Remedy for a Fundamentalist Islam behind the Conservative Salafi Brand As Well As the Jihadist
    Sami Zubaida

Adherence to religion among Muslims in their majority countries and in Western Diasporas is commonly based on affiliations and sentiments that do not favour liberal reformism. In much of the Muslim world, the precarious conditions of security and livelihood for many drive people to seek protection in communal networks of kin, tribe and patronage, in which religious authority plays an important role. Patriarchy and communal authoritarianism are buttressed by religious rules and disciplines. Mosques, madrasas and charities, many financed by Saudi donations and personnel reinforce these communalist formations. While many Salafis are not violent militants, these ideas and institutions do mutate into Jihadism: the Taliban were initially the product of Saudi financed madrasas in Pakistan.....

    Interfaith Dialogue

One has to penetrate and go deep to search the truth. And it is same to search the world outside as looking one’s own inside. The passage may be difficult but to do that you need a ‘leader’ and the right passion: Ishq (true love). Truth does not make one behave like the ignorant clergy do. It brings humility rather than arrogance.....

    Madrassas And Militancy
    Mumtaz Ahmad

...The National Action Plan, announced by the prime minister to combat extremism and terrorism in the country, makes two points about madrassas: to register and regulate them and to introduce curriculum reform. While very few people will disagree with the first point — the imperative need for the registration of madrassas and transparency of their funding sources — we are not quite sure about the causal relationships between madrassa curriculum on the one hand and extremism and terrorism, on the other.

Wahhabi Impact: Influence of Wahhabi Islam on the Indian Muslim community is growing
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

The influence of Wahhabi Islam in the Indian Muslim community started growing around this period. Indian Muslims have a long tradition of Sufi Islam or what is called the Barelvi tradition. A milder form of Wahhabism exists in the subcontinent in the form of the Deoband theological school, which commands a large following but has always coexisted with other forms of Islamic traditions. This has made Islamic practices in India dynamic and syncretic. No wonder then that many sections of the Muslim community have resisted the strict code of conduct and practice of a “puritanical” religion advocated by the Wahhabis……

How Best the World’s Sufi Scholars Can Strengthen Muslim Community’s Response against Religious Extremism: Action Points!
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

“The event, which is being organised by the All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board, will showcase India’s Islamic heritage that rejects violence and supports inclusivity”...... Sufism could be a strong counter to the IS troopers as it never pursues political power or tries to change social structures. Instead, Sufism stands for multiplicity, tolerance, acceptance and love”.

    Maryam Sakeenah, New Age Islam

Addressing the issue of the revival of slavery as ‘Islamic’, Michael Perez writes, ‘…we must refuse the position that limits our contemporary ethical horizons. To do so, we can take the Prophet’s statements against slavery as our contemporary responsibility… Such a perspective is critical today… Muslims have a role to play in the elaboration of Islam, and push forth a future in which slavery is no longer a question.’

Is The Quran One Solution to Terror? Does Quran forbid Muslims to enter into friendly relationships and alliances with non-Muslims?
    Kabir Helminski

It has sometimes been asserted that the Quran forbids Muslims to enter into friendly relationships and alliances with non-Muslims. What is the truth of this? This assertion is based on a misunderstanding of a verse that tells the Muslims of Muhammad’s time not to take as allies those who oppose their religion. The general principle established throughout the Qur’an is that the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims should be based on peace and fairness. ...

    Islam and Human Rights

We also affirm that every human person has the right and duty to seek truth and to follow his or her conscience, and, in a similar vein, assert that seeking truth is something inherent to human dignity. It is important to firmly stress that change of one’s religion resulting from following of one’s conscience is also an integral part of the exercise of the right to religious freedom.

    Islamic Personalities

He said following the Prophet was loving Allah, the most forgiving and merciful. He said one of the titles of the Prophet was Habibullah, the beloved of God. He said in Rumi the love of the Prophet was a large concept. He gave many examples in which Rumi had praised the Prophet using beautiful metaphors, one of which was the incomparable pearl. He said according to Rumi, we had idols in our hearts; if we loved the Prophet, we would be able to free our hearts of all the idols.....

    Islam and Human Rights

Some such thinkers are led to conclude that there is a Creator, Sustainer and Master of it all and called it God the same as religious god, thus confusing the issue.  Previous Messengers and Muhammad among them; as a curious and intensely sensitive person and inclined to contemplate on such matters, must have experienced the same and concluded that there is “No god…” other than the one Universal Master whom he called in his Arabic language  …Rabb” ....

Muslim as the Enemy, Muslim as the Other
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

But for this Hindu Right group, the mere fact that he was a Muslim was reason enough that he should be taught a lesson, shamed and humiliated and eventually dragged and beaten up. It is another matter that he was an Indian that he was a fellow Maharashtrian; what was more important for the crowd was that he was Muslim first and last. In short, this policeman who had done nothing wrong but performs his duty for nearly three decades was reduced to his religious identity......

If Islam Means Peace, Why Is Much Of Its Theology Soaked In Hatred, Humiliation, Offensive War?
    Sultan Shahin, New Age Islam

Among many factors, social, economic, political, psychological, the one common feature is a brainwashing of vulnerable people on the basis of a supremacist, xenophobic, intolerant, exclusivist and totalitarian Jihadi theology. This is a blatant misuse of Islam, a spiritual path to salvation, that 1.6 billion Muslims believe, teaches peace, pluralism, co-existence and good neighbourliness.

But there has to be a reason why jihadi ideology has gained acceptance so quickly; why fatwas issued by reputed moderate scholars prove so ineffective? How are Jihadis able to create a 100 percent certainty in the minds of some Muslims that violence against innocent people, including Muslims, whom they consider infidel, will please God and lead them to heaven?

Clearly we Muslims need to rethink some basic features of our theology. Success of jihadism lies in the fact that, at its core, the jihadi theology is not very different from the consensus theology of all other schools of Islamic thought. For instance, jihadists are able to misuse the intolerant, xenophobic, war-time verses of the holy Quran, as Muslims believe that all verses, regardless of the context, are of universal applicability. Indeed, the Islamic theology of consensus, taught in all madrasas, says that Quran is uncreated, meaning that it is just an aspect of God; and so, divine like God Himself.....
