Chief Rabbinate Disqualifies the Very Term ‘Rabbanit' and 'Female Rabbi'

In recent decades, Torah study by women has grown increasingly acceptable, with many serving as teachers, community leaders and spiritual guides. However, the learned women cannot be officially ordained as rabbis because the Chief Rabbinate has a monopoly on ordaining rabbis in Israel and it refuses to let women take the required exams. Absent the Rabbinate’s approval, many institutions of religious learning and progressive Orthodox rabbis have begun bestowing the title “Rabbanit” — the female form of the Hebrew word for rabbi...

According to some monks I spoke to there, the family of Nazir Roz Afsun fared very badly in the riots which took place during the partition of India in 1947, and the lone survivor, a young boy, migrated to Pakistan. In 1948 Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave the land as a gift to the famous Cambodian monk Dharmvara Mahathera on behalf of the Indian state for the purpose of opening a Buddhist institute. It was he who founded the Ashoka mission there. It is now the Official Buddhist Mission in Delhi, known as Ashoka Mission...

The Quran Is a Book of Ethical Principles, the Specific Rules Provided By the Quran Need to Be Studied In Terms Of Their Relevance
    Nikhat Sattar

In Muslim societies, Sharia has come to be equated with rules and procedures while guidance in ethics and morality has been lost somewhere. Many Muslim scholars justify economic misdeeds, greed, exploitation, marrying many women, slavery, depriving women of their inheritance, beating wives based upon verses that were never meant to do any of these. They spend their efforts in resisting any movements that advocate educating women and laws against domestic violence and supporting feudal systems that uphold economic exploitation of the poor....

Islam Is a Gender and Sexuality Positive Religion, Islam Does Not Proscribe LGBT People
    Aarti Tikoo Singh

Despite contemporary perceptions that homosexuality is a Western phenomenon, same-sex dynamics of many varieties are an integral part of Islamic history and culture. The Quran contains no word that means “homosexuality” as an abstract idea denoting a sexuality of men who desire pleasure with other men or a sexuality of women who desire pleasure with other women. The closest the Quran comes to directly addressing homosexual people is the phrase “men who are not in need of women or have no sexual guile before women.” The Quran presents this phrase descriptively in neutral tone, not linked to denunciation or legal proscription....

    And the Taj Stands Tall
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

It is true that the Taj was worked upon by Indian labourers, that it is they who built the magnificent structure. It is also possible to look at the monument as an exercise in wasteful expenditure, like Aurangzeb did. But to simply criticise it because Muslims built it is nothing but silly. The Taj is a symbol of love since centuries. The Mughal discourse and subsequent history writing have made this object of love into the common-sense of Indian people. Hindus and Muslims both look up to it as the monument dedicated to love. It is not surprising therefore that there was backlash from within the Hindus which forced Yogi to pick up a broom and run to the service of Taj. That is called the triumph of hegemony and the Hindu Right will be advised to think hard before they renege on the pledge that UP Chief Minister gave while speaking on the Taj.

Tellingly, Egypt is the first Muslim country which has mulled down the entire corpus of extremist Islamist literature in the country’s religious and educational centres. It has literally banned the extremist thoughts from flourishing in the new Egyptian generation’s minds. Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutub, Maulana Maududi and almost all those who expounded upon the political Islamist theologies in their books have been ousted from the universities and schools. In his piece in The Times of India, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi claimed that Egypt has been at the forefront in the counter-terror mission….

The word “jihad” means “struggle” or “striving” (in the way of God) or to work for a noble cause with determination; it does not mean “holy war” Unlike its medieval Christian counterpart term, “crusade” (“war for the cross”), however, the term jihad for Muslims has retained its religious and military connotation into modern times. The word jihad has appeared widely in the Western news media following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but the true meaning of this term in the Islamic world is still not well understood by non-Muslims….

But the fact that both Islam and Hinduism are based on divine revelation and in essence both worship the Supreme Being is generally ignored. The foundation of Hinduism is the Vedas comprising of different scriptures revealed to Rishis (prophets) over a long period of time. Islam is also based on the Quran which is a reminder of the messages and commandments revealed to prophet before Muhammad pbuh. The Vedas and the Upanishads sing the glory of the Supreme Being (Nirgun Brahman), the Formless God, the Creator of all. The Mundakya Upanishad VI says:

'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
