Had The Hadith Already Asked Muslims 1400 Years Ago Not To Join ISIS?

An honest study of the holy Quran and Sunnah demonstrates the fact that terrorist groups like ISIS act in complete disagreement with the injunctions of Islam. The Quran, for example, equates killing of one person to the elimination of all mankind (5:32), and describes persecution and disorder on earth as an even worse offense (2:217). The study of the ahadith [plural of hadith in Arabic] also shows that the beloved Prophet warned us of the evolution of religious extremism and violence 1400 years ago in astonishing detail. For instance, he prophesized that a time would come when nothing would remain of the true spiritual essence of Islam except the word ‘Islam’, nothing of the Quran except its word and many “Mosques would be well-furnished but bereft of the guidance” (see the book of hadith “Mishkat Al-Masabih”). 

The beloved Prophet went on to describe the terrorist groups such as ISIS that at the time of tribulation [fitna] there would appear “a group of young people who would be foolish and immature in thought”. They would “use the beautiful speech” but perpetrate the most heinous crimes. They would recite the Quran and call people to the Quran but its “teachings would not go past their throats” i.e. they would have nothing to do with the message of the Quran in reality. The beloved Prophet described these terrorists as “the worst of the creation”.

Relatively speaking, one hadith that a number of Arab and non-Arab Islamic clerics and scholars are quoting to refute ISIS and debar Muslim youth from joining the ISIS militants is as follows:

Arabic Text:

حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ، وَرِشْدِينُ، عَنِ ابْنِ لَهِيعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي قَبِيلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي رُومَانَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الرَّايَاتِ السُّودَ فَالْزَمُوا الْأَرْضَ فَلَا تُحَرِّكُوا أَيْدِيَكُمْ، وَلَا أَرْجُلَكُمْ، ثُمَّ يَظْهَرُ قَوْمٌ ضُعَفَاءُ لَا يُؤْبَهُ لَهُمْ، قُلُوبُهُمْ كَزُبَرِ الْحَدِيدِ، هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الدَّوْلَةِ، لَا يَفُونَ بِعَهْدٍ وَلَا مِيثَاقٍ، يَدْعُونَ إِلَى الْحَقِّ وَلَيْسُوا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، أَسْمَاؤُهُمُ الْكُنَى، وَنِسْبَتُهُمُ الْقُرَى، وَشُعُورُهُمْ مُرْخَاةٌ كَشُعُورِ النِّسَاءِ، حَتَّى يَخْتَلِفُوا فِيمَا بَيْنَهُمْ، ثُمَّ يُؤْتِي اللَّهُ الْحَقَّ مَنْ يَشَاءُ»(كتاب الفتن للعلامة الحافظ أبي عبد الله النعيم بن حماد المروزي، الجزء الثالث ، باب "في خروج بني العباس" رقم الحديث 573 (

English Translation:

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah ennoble his countenance): “When you see the black flags, then remain on the ground, and do not move your hands or your feet. Thereafter there shall emerge a weak folk to whom no concern is given. Their hearts will be like the iron rods. They shall be the people of the State (Ashab al-Dawla). They will fulfill neither covenant nor agreement. They will invite to the Truth, though they are not from its people. Their names will be with ‘kuna’ [plural form of kunya; a teknonym in Arabic names. A kunya is expressed by the use of ‘Abu’ that means ‘father’], and their ascriptions will be to villages (or places) [i.e., al-Misri, al-Harrani, al-Baghdadi, etc.]. Their hair will be long like that of women. [They shall remain so] till they differ among themselves, and then Allah will bring the truth to whomever He wills."Kitab Al Fitan (Book of Tribulations) by Nu'aym ibn Hammad)

Imam Nu’aym ibn Hammad, who is the Shahikh of Imam Bukhari, mentioned this hadith in the book of Tribulations [Kitab al- Fitan]. This means that this hadith is all about the people of Tribulations, or in other words, about those people who incite terrorism, violence and radicalism.   

When pondering over the hadith, some questions strike us; what are the signs of these people holding the black flags and causing great tribulations? Who are these people? Do they exist today? Can we say that these people are none other than the ISIS militants? In order to resolve such questions, let us ponder over the same hadith into parts:

1. This hadith says to Muslims, “When you see the black flags, then remain on the ground, and do not move your hands or your feet.” This hadith suggests Muslims to remain where they are, when they see the black banners.  We can see that the ISIS has the black banners; so the Muslims should not rush to join the ISIS.

2. It also says, “Thereafter there shall emerge a weak folk to whom no concern is given. Their hearts will be like the iron rods”.

When ISIS appeared as a small group of militants, no concern was given to it. However, with their brutal and merciless deeds, the ISIS gained power and captured some parts of Iraq and Syria by terrorizing, mutilating, beheading the citizens. Their hearts are merciless and as hard as iron rods just like the hadith tells us; so they kill everyone who goes against them.

3. The most important part of the hadith is that “They shall be the people of the State (Ashab al-Dawla)”

Interestingly ISIS refers to itself as “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” or Dawla al-Islamia in Arabic. The Arabic word “al-Dawla” mentioned in this hadith means ‘State’.

4. The hadith says, “They will fulfill neither covenant nor agreement”

From this perspective, we find that ISIS has fulfilled neither covenant nor agreement i.e. the covenant of peace, while it is incumbent upon Muslims to be loyal to the peace-treaty.

5. The hadith says, “They will invite to the Truth, but they are not from its people”.

This completely pertains to the habit of the ISIS. Even the elementary students of Islam can tell you that the ISIS militants are misguiding the people in the name of Truth, Islam, Jihad, and by misinterpreting the Quran and Sunnah. They apparently invite to Islam, but their merciless crimes and false creeds bear witness to the fact that they are not Islamic.

6. Another important sign of the ISIS that the hadith narrates is that “Their names will be with ‘kuna’ [plural form of kunya; a teknonym in Arabic names. A kunya is expressed by the use of ‘Abu’ that means ‘father’]”.

This holds true for the ISIS leaders and militants that their names are preceded by ‘kuna’ i.e. ‘Abu’ such as;

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’ (leader)

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (founder; killed in 2006)

Abu Ayyub al-Masri (killed in 2010)

Abu Abdullah al-Rashid al-Baghdadi (killed in 2010)

Abu Suleiman al-Naser (head of military shura; killed in February 2011)

Abu Muhammad al-Shimali (key leader in ISIL’s Immigration and Logistics Committee and responsible for facilitating the travel of foreign fighters primarily through the border Turkey/Syria)

Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajer (spokesman, appointed in December 2016)

Abu Talha al-Almani

Abu Luqman, governor of Raqqah

Abu Yusaf (senior security official)

7. Another important sign of the inciters of tribulations mentioned in the above referenced Hadith is that “Their ascriptions will be to villages (or places).”

If we look into the names of ISIS militants, we find that they ascribe to the places, villages and cities such as al-Misri, al-Harrani, Zarqawi, al-Baghdadi, al-Kurdi, al-Iraqi, al-Maghrebi, al-Kurdi, al-Alwani, al-Jazrawi, al-Shishani, al-Almani etc. To see more, please see the list of ISIS members mentioned above.

8. The hadith says, “Their hair will be long like that of women. [They shall remain so] till they differ among themselves, and then Allah will bring the truth to whomever He wills.”

Please search the pictures of ISIS members on internet, you will find that their hair is long like that of women.

Given the signs of the inciters of tribulations clearly mentioned in the referenced hadith above, one cannot deny the fact that this hadith relates to the ISIS militants. As for the message taken out of this hadith in the present context, it suggests Muslims to remain on the ground or wherever they are, that is, the Hadith prevents Muslims from joining ISIS.

  • Learning Usul ul-Fiqh i.e. the Principle of Jurisprudence is important to understand the rulings derived from the shariah for our daily lives. This is because of the fact that we are unable to find out all rulings or its specific details in the Quran, nor are we able to find all the secondary rulings in the hadith collections. We see many aspirants learning the interpretation of the holy Quran are oftentimes confused with the literal or connotative meanings. To solve this and many other growing issues that arise within different chronological and cultural periods, it is therefore necessary to learn all the Principles of Fiqh.

    If one has problem with understanding any verse of the Quran or hadith reports, it is wrong for him to rush to interpret them on the fanciful basis, but rather he should consult any expert of fiqh [faqih] for the correct meaning of the question that he wants to know about.

    The Meaning and Application of Kufr and Its derivatives [musthaqqat]

    کفر  کا معنی و مفہوم

    کفر  کے مختلف معانی ہیں: ان میں سے  بعض یہ ہیں: انکار کرنا (یہ ایمان کی ضد ہے۔کفر سے   کفور اور کفران ہے)، اللہ رب العزت کی نفی کرنا، اس کی تکذیب کرنا  ، ڈھانپ لینا، ناشکری کرنا۔شرعی اصطلاح میں کفر کا مطلب ضروریات دین  کا  انکار  کرنا ، اس کی تکذیب  کرنا  یا اس کا   استہزا کرنا وغیرہ کے ہیں۔

    ضروریات دین متکلمین اسلام اور فقہائے کرام کی متفقہ اصطلاح کے مطابق ان مسائل و احکام کو کہا جاتا ہے جن کا نظام مصطفی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا حصہ ہونا اہل علم کے خواص و عوام کی نگاہ میں مسلمہ ، غیر متنازعہ اور قطعی و یقینی طور پر مشہور و معروف اور متواتر ہو۔ چاہے اوامر سے تعلق ہو یا نواہی یعنی مطلوب الفعل ہو یا مطلوب الترک۔

    شرح مقاصد میں ہے :

    ‘‘ضروریات دین سے مراد وہ احکام ہیں جن کا دین اسلام کا حصہ ہونا اس حد تک مشہور ہو کہ عوام و خواص کسی نظر و استدلال کے محتاج ہوئے بغیر اسے سمجھتے ہوں۔’’

    لیکن یہ بات بھی قابل غور ہے کہ ضروریات دین کا خواص و عوام کے نزدیک مسلمہ ، غیر متنازعہ اور بداہت کی حد تک حصہ دین مشہور ہونے کا مطلب یہ  نہیں ہے کہ مذہبی اقدار سے لا تعلق عوام بھی انہیں سمجھتے ہوں ، نہیں ایسا ہرگز نہیں ہے بلکہ فقہائے کرام کی کتابوں میں موجود اس خواص و عوام سے مراد بالترتیب علمائے دین اور ان کی صحبت پانے والے عوام ہیں ۔

    تکفیر کا مطلب ہے کسی کو کافر کہنا، چھپا لینا، معاف کرنا، بھینٹ دینا ، کفارہ دینا۔

    مکافرۃ کا مطلب  انکار کرنا  یا  ٹال مٹول کرنا ہے۔

    اکفار  کا معنی کافر بنانا ، یا کفر کی طرف مائل کرنا ہے۔

    کافور ایک مشہور دوا کا نام ہے ۔

    Mushrik: Jo shakhs Allah paak ki zaat me, sifaat me, yaa uske kaamon me kisi dusre ko sharik samjhe wo mushrik kahlata hai

    Kafir: rasulullah Sallallahu alaihiwasallam ke laaye hue deen me se kisi baat se jo inkar kare wo kaafir kahlata hai.

  • بے شک اہل قبلہ کی تکفیر  کا رواج جو ہمارے معاشرے میں زور و شور پر ہے بالکل جائز نہیں ۔اس موضوع پر کئی سال پہلے میں نے انگریزی زبان میں ایک مضمون بھی لکھا تھا جو اسی ویبسائٹس پر موجودہے ۔ میں اس مضمون سے چند اقتباسات یہاں نقل کر رہا ہوں پھر اہل قبلہ کی وضاحت کروں گا۔

    Various Ahadith Strictly Prevent From Accusing Any Muslim of being Kafir 

    The messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: If a person says to his brother, O’ Kafir (disbeliever)! Then surely one of them is such. (i.e.; Kafir) (Sahih Bukhari Volume 8 Book 73 Number 125) 

    The same Hadith is narrated with slightly different words in Muslim Shareef: 

    The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Any person who calls his brother: O Unbeliever, (then, the truth of this label) would return to one of them. If it is true, (then it is) as he asserted, (but if it is not true), then it returns to him (and thus the person who made the accusation is an unbeliever). [Sahih Muslim Book 001, Number 0117:] 

    "Whoever attributes Kufr [unbelief] to a believer, he is like his murderer". (Narrated by Tirmidhi and Bukhari)

    "Withhold [your tongues] from those who say "There is no god but Allah" --- do not call them Kafir. Whoever calls a reciter of "There is no god but Allah" as a Kafir is nearer to being a Kafir himself”. (Tabarani, reported from Ibn Umar)

    "Three things are the basis of faith. [One is] to withhold from one who says "There is no god but Allah" --- do not call him Kafir for any sin, nor expel him from Islam for any misconduct". (Abu Dawud)

    All the Ahadith (plural of Hadith) mentioned above obviously formulate a legal value not to describe a believer or a Muslim as Kaafir. The law is so strict that if the accusation is not true, the accuser himself will be considered a Kaafir. Hence, the Taliban ideologue, Mr. Kaashif has violated the divine commandments and all the above-mentioned sayings of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

    Classical Islamic Jurists and Scholars Disapproved Attribution of Takfirism towards Any Muslim 

    The standard and classical scholars of Islamic law (Fiqh) prohibited the use of Takfiri ideology for any believer. The following are the excerpts that refute Taliban-Wahhabi ideologue, Mr. Kaashif who has done Takfīr of all Pakistani Muslims: 

    One of the doctrines of Ahl as-Sunnah (the people of Sunnah) is that none of the people of the Qibla can and should be called Kafir” (Sharh ‘Aqai’d al-Nasafiyyah by Allamah Sa'ad al-Din al-Taftazani, p.121) 

    A ruling of Takfir should not be offered to a Muslim if there is possibility of interpreting his words in a favourable manner” (Rad al-Mukhtar, Book of Jihad, Chapter on Apostasy) 

    Pointing out to Imam Abu Hanifa the founder of Hanafi School of thought, It has been said, “He did not describe anyone from among the people of the Qibla as Kafir”. (Sharh al-Mawaqif, 5th part)

    Imam Azam Abu Hanafi RA said: “Nothing expels a man from faith except the denial of what brought him in it (faith)”. (Rad al-Mukhtar, Vol 3, P.310) 

    Allama Mulla Ali Qari said, “It is extremely serious to drive a Muslim out of the faith” (Sharh al-Shifa, vol 2, p.500)

    ALlama Jalaluddin RA said, “Takfir of people of the Qibla is itself an act of disbelief”. (Dalail al-Masail)

    Various Imams have clearly said that if there is any ground for not enacting Takfīr, The Takfiri ruling should not be issued, even if that ground is weak”. (Raf al-Ishtiba an Ibarat al-Ishtiba, p.4)

    مندرجہ بالا ائمہ کرام و علمائے عظام کے اقوال پڑھنے کے بعد یہ بات روز  روشن کی طرح کی عیاں ہے کہ اہل قبلہ کی تکفیر جائز نہیں ۔مگر اہل قبلہ سے مراد کیا ہے ؟ یہ ایک سوال ہے جس کے متعلق اکثر لوگ ناواقف ہیں ۔

    متکلمین اسلام اور فقہائے کرام کی اصطلاح میں اہل قبلہ صرف ان ہی لوگوں کو کہا جاتا ہے جو ‘‘الف سے لے کر یا’’ تک تمام ضروریات  دینیہ کو بطور نظام مصطفی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم تسلیم کرے۔اہل قبلہ کو ہی دوسرے لفظ میں اہل ایمان کہتے ہیں۔اہل قبلہ کے اس اصطلاحی و شرعی معنی میں جملہ متکلمین اسلام و فقہائے کرام کے ساتھ ساتھ مفسرین و محدثین اور صوفیائے کرام بھی متفق ہیں۔

    فقہ اکبر میں ہے :

    المراد باھل القبلۃ الذین اتفقوا علی ما ھو من ضروریات الدین

    یعنی : اہل قبلہ سے مراد وہ لوگ ہیں جو تمام ضروریات دین کو تسلیم کرنے پر متفق  ہیں۔

    شرح عقائد کی شرح نبراس میں ہے :

    ‘‘اہل قبلہ کے لغت میں دو معنی ہیں ایک قبلہ کی طرف منہ کرکے نماز پڑھنے والا اور دوسرا کعبہ کو قبلہ سمجھنے والا، جبکہ متکلمین اسلام کی اصطلاح میں اس سے مراد صرف وہی لوگ ہیں جو تمام ضروریات دین کی تصدیق کرتے ہیں’’

  • جناب غلام غوث صاحب حفظک اللہ ،  آپ کے جواب کا بہت بہت شکریہ ، مگر یہ جو کہا جاتا ہے کہ اہل قبلہ کی تکفیر جائز نہیں جیسا کہ امام اعظم ابو حنیفہ ، علامہ تفتازانی ، علامہ شامی جیسے اکابرین کا ماننا ہے کہ اہل قبلہ کی تکفیر جائز نہیں۔ لیکن آپ کی خدمت میں  بحیثیت طالب علم میرا سوال یہ ہے کہ اگر ایسا ہے تو کیوں مسلم طبقہ ایک دوسرے کی تکفیر کرتے ہیں.

    التزام کفر اور لزوم کفر کے مسائل کا تعلق علم کلام سے ہے۔ جو لوگ متوسط ذہن رکھتے ہیں ان کے لئے ضروری ہے کہ علم کلام کو صحیح طور پر سمجھنے کے لئے علم منطق کو سیکھیں۔

    آپ کے جواب میں بالاختصار یہ عرض کرے گا  کہ التزام کفر میں بلا واسطہ کسی ضرورت دینی سے انکار یا تکذیب یا توہین یا استہزا یا ان میں سے کسی ایک کی یقینی علامت کا ارتکاب ہوتا ہے، جبکہ لزوم کفر میں یہ سب کچھ بالواسطہ ہوتا ہے۔اس واسطہ سے مراد وہی واسطہ ہے جس کو فلسفہ و منطق میں واسطہ فی الاثبات اور حد اوسط کہتے ہیں۔

  • جناب غلام غوث صدیقی صاحب السلام علیکم ، بہت عمدہ تشریح ۔ اس حدیث پاک کا مطالعہ کرنے کے بعد کسی طرح کا شائبہ نہیں رہتا ۔ بے شک داعش ایک گمراہ تنظیم ہے ۔ اس تنظیم کی سب سے بڑی خاصیت یہ ہے کہ یہ دوسرے مسلمانوں کی تکفیر کرتی ہے اور اسی بنیاد پر ان مسلمانوں کا  قتل کرتی ہے ۔

    اس کے علاوہ بھی آپ کے بعض مضامین کو پڑھنے کا موقع ملا ، کافی عمدہ لگا ۔اللہ پاک آپ کو بہت شاد رکھے۔ تکفیر کے سلسلے میں  ایک کتاب کا مطالعہ کر رہی تھی ، اس میں لزوم کفر اور التزام کفر جیسے الفاظ کا مطلب مجھے سمجھ نہیں آیا ۔براہ کرم جواب عنایت فرماکر شکریہ کا موقعہ عطا کریں۔

    1. I have read from the Internet that Koran Commands its followers to Convert Idolators by force or Kill them if they refuse to convert. Further if any Muslim leaves Islam and joins another Religion then he must be killed. Apart from this just read the Full History of Islam right from its beginning. It is fully Soaked with the blood of Idolators Slaughtered because they refused to convert to Islam. There was a news in the Times of India some two or three years back that a Muslim person from Pakistan married a Christian Lady and he converted to Christianity. Then he remained in hiding for Sixteen Years. When people came to know about this they wanted to kill him but luckily he could go to the U. S. consulate and was thus saved. 
    2. There may be many good things too in Koran but these Two Most Inhuman Commands outweigh all other good things if any. 
    2. If New Age Islam is honest he will vociferously revolt against these Inhuman Commands publicly.

  • @Zamiruddin , Rousan Ali Dear brothers you have raised very sensible balanced point quite useful for creating an humane , lovable society . few point on which no muslim cleric , intellectual or ordinary person ever disputes. 
    (1) west created and nurture Taliban’s and now they have created monsters and devils like ISIS. 
    (2) Few Muslim youths gets trapped in the evil designs of perverts. Though statistically these are very small in numbers yet grave responsibility rest with us in confronting this menace scourge.
    (3) Ulema have done reasonable commendable job by I issuing fatwas (edicts ) against terror. Though biased and prejudiced mind like tarekh fateh , new age islam wil not appreciate us on this point yet truth is visible to all sane persons. All leading madarsas of India and abroad issued edicts against terror. Deaoband , Al Azhar Cairo, imam of mecca etc all had spoken in one Voice against terror. On social media slalwarts like our NSA , home minister all have acknowledged constructive role played by ulemas .This closes the debate on this point.
    The point the approach of ex muslims like new age islam and Tuifail ahmad etc are damaging the cause of humanist and liberals rather then supporting it. One illustrative example . after the Muzaffarnagar riots in which thousand of Muslims left homeless and scores of them died. Scores of Muslim women raped. At that point of time many news items were appearing on media whose authenticity cannot be commented upon. These new items quoting unnamed intelligence sources that Pakistan is trying to foment trouble with the help of victimized youths. Moulana Mahmud madani lost no time and started healing work. I must make it quite clear that I am in no way a follower of any moulana least of all Mahmud Madni. In no time Moulana madni constructed several make shift houses temporary schools for the rehabilitation of internal refugees. With the help of creative HONEST theology quoting stalwarts like Moulana Abdul kalam azad great freedom fighter and our first education minister he helped out in bringing back the disgruntled elements to the realm of law and sanity. The example of Teesta Setalvad who brought up and integrated victim of 2002 Gujrat riots is exemplary and appreciated and recognized throughout the world. 
    Contrast above approach with that of sultan shaheen , Tufail ahmad, and scores of other EX Muslims . they just advocated scrapping verses of quran sharif (sultan shaheen Times now TV Channel Talk show JULY 2016) , or like Tufail ahmad who attacked the great personality of freedom struggle and secularism Moulana Azad. In what way these Ex Muslims helped the cause of humanity. Only they ca tell. Humanity requires healing touch and sensitivity not the crazy perverted Islam bashing of right wing types. This truth must be grasped by new age islam. in the columns of new age islam facebook edition we usually read ulgy , abusive, hateful post where right wingers abuse and insult quran sharif , prophet (pubh) etc. all these post clearly violates all sections of Indian Penal Code. how can new age islam not liable for such hate . they are liable and guilty for creating difference between communities. 
    All humans will have to account for their deeds at the time of Doomsday (QAYAMAT). We will be held accountable for our deeds . few people are spreading HATE just for money and worldly fame. They must make amends now.

EVIL ideologies like ISIS , varna system , laws of manu must be condemned.
