Islam and Politics

Only eight years since the revolution, the acculturation to democracy in the small North African country is a reality. Tunisians have adjusted, adopted and acquired democratic values, and voting in transparency is becoming a habit....

We are now, as a nation, cast adrift on an uncertain sea of bigotry with even the preteens of decency and respect for diversity gone. While many were celebrating the new Malaysia, a dark and sinister form of ethnoreligious fascism was taking shape and is now upon us....

Those troops were also interrupting Iran’s efforts to build a land bridge from Tehran to Beirut to tighten a noose around Israel — and their removal could help bring the Iran-Israel shadow war out into the open. This is the really big story in the Middle East today....

…the way forward is not a new government and a new prime minister, and the dangerous political uncertainty that brings. Instead it is a concerted effort to improve governance and to work for the economic regeneration of Iraq….

Politicians’ and pundits’ knowledge of the country’s Muslims is not based on interaction or informed reading but through global media representations filtered through Islamophobia and geopolitical priorities far removed from Sri Lanka’s own interests....

The bill’s backers in parliament say it is an essential articulation of Indonesia’s independence. Its detractors point out that it badly undermines the rights of women as well as sexual and religious minorities. It also criminalises all extramarital sex....

I accused him of embracing an “Islamist majoritarian” version of democracy, where electoral victories justify the repression of minorities and the erosion of individual rights. He accused me of embracing a “secularist authoritarian” version of democracy, where liberalism justifies repressing Islamist majorities....

Yet, the court immediately granted the parties’ request to restart mediation and let it proceed concurrently with the day-to-day-hearing. For this, it deserves praise....

When the regime in Iran falls, and whatever comes next, it is a safe bet that the politics will be more secular than what it was before; whatever public policy gains that the regime has made will be gone overnight because faith itself has departed the hearts of the Iranian people...

Even if Mahathir passed these remarks, one thing remains clear: critiquing Jews and Israel suddenly becomes “off-limits”, with or without facts. The democratic tenets of free speech and human rights instantly evaporate...

Even as they call for the refugees’ return — which is an impossibility in the near term — those countries are nursing their economic and political relationships with the Myanmar government….

Part of the sinicisation effort is called the “four-enter” campaign. This means ensuring that four things are introduced into every mosque: the Chinese flag, propaganda concerning China’s laws on religion, “core socialist values” and the country’s “outstanding traditional culture”...

The FFM’s business report, a combination of glaring errors, outdated research and spurious conclusions, has nonetheless rattled both the Myanmar business community and military business circles. The imposition of United States’ travel bans on Min Aung Hlaing and several of his deputies in July were also symbolic sting to the commander’s reputation...

Similar demolitions have been carried out in Inner Mongolia, Henan and Ningxia, the homeland of China’s largest Muslim ethnic minority, the Hui. In the southern province of Yunnan, three mosques were closed….

The UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, last week appealed to Aung San Suu Kyi to “open your eyes, listen, feel with your heart, and please use your moral authority before it is too late.”....

The Uighurs, a Muslim minority ethnic group of around 12 million in northwest China, are required by the police to carry their smartphones and IDs listing their ethnicity....

Western scholar of Islam and the greatest authority on Ghalib, Sir Ralph Russell very meaningfully wrote that the much-maligned Pan-Islamisation is narrowing of Pan-Humanism of Islamic Tasawwuf. That's the reason; Al-Furqaan (Quran) categorically calls the Almighty: Rabbul-Alameen (the god of the entire universe) and not just Rabbul-Muslameen (the god of Muslims only)....

For international stakeholders, a sustainable resolution of the Rohingya crisis is predicated upon support for current efforts to create a democratic and federal polity in Myanmar along with the simultaneous pursuit of accountability for human rights violations....

For far too long, the Myanmar military has used the alleged “ethnic” threat to national sovereignty and territorial integrity as a reason to wage brutal wars against entire ethnic communities and to ensure that Bamar-Buddhism remains as the status quo in the country. ...

What matters is that the Palestinians in Israel — whom Israeli Jews refer to as the “Israeli Arabs” — stood up to the efforts to undermine their voting rights and made a significant statement that they will not be taken for granted....

Mahmood Madani’s own status as a religious elite-cum-professional politician is inextricably linked to a kind of Ulema politics that evolved out of the compulsions of electoral power play in post-colonial India....

Now, the displaced Rohingya languish in neighbouring Bangladesh, a seething humanitarian challenge, while Buddhist-majority Myanmar, also known as Burma, tries to cover up and forget the destruction of Rohingya villages and homes....

The Sharia law was perceived as an extension of Confucian rituals. In the end, Liu believed that the blend of Confucianism and lslam along certain select lines would produce a society of social harmony and virtue….

Instead, charismatic figures like Said Nursi, who died in 1960, brought the highly conservative and fatalist theology of Ash‘arism, which dominates Islamic thought in the madrasas of eastern Turkey, to the west of the country. ...

Islam appeared as a religious dispensation in the desert of Arabia in the early eighth century. But it took more than three hundred years for the scholarly elite of Muslims to develop a sophisticated system of theology, positive law, creedal formulations, and mystical Gnosticism....
