Radical Islamism and Jihad (04 Feb 2015 NewAgeIslam.Com)

  • While I agree with the spirit of the article and its intention, I have doubts about how practical the suggestion is.

If the Ulema of this world thought like Mr Yunus, the problem would not have occured in the first place. The problem has occurred precisely because the mainstream Ulema of every sect (past and present) hold views that form the fault lines of our theology which have been systematically exploited to use extremism as a tool to achieve political objectives by the US. It is beyond doubt and argument that Religion was misused to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan to meet the political objectives of the US. The US war on Iraq as part of the war on terror was based on deliberate lies and has produced more extremists. Its war on Afghanistan was equally immoral. The US and its NATO allies have systematically exploited the fault lines.

I have shown what these fault lines are in my article:

Action Points for Defeating the Extremist Ideology

As long as these fault lines remain, the extremists are only extreme in their actions and interpretations and for the same reason, the mainstream Ulema of every sect have no moral authority to declare the extremists as Kharjites while they continue to fulminate about their extremism from time to time for the sake of political correctness.

The first step the mainstream Ulema should take is therefore to acknowledge the false notions that have become part of our theology. It is only then that they will be able to take a moral stand against the extremists and declare them Kharjites.

The war on terror to be effective must be short and decisive. What we find is that it goes on for decades. This produces more extremists not less. Perhaps this is part of a deliberate policy of the Superpower.

Declaring the extremists as Kharjites from the weak moral ground on which the mainstream ulema now stand, will only make these Ulema the laughing stock and make the extremists look even better to those who are attracted to extremism. It will make matters worse, not better.

However, if the mainstream Ulema first openly clean up their theology of the false notions, then that act by itself will have a tremendous impact on the whole world (both Muslim and non-Muslim). Thereafter, they will have the moral authority to declare the extremists as Kharjites. Honesty is the first requirement for gaining credibility.

  • Victory against the proponents of extremism and terrorism will only be realised with the concerted efforts of all those who have an effect on the course of this nation based on the guidance and direction role that is based on disseminating Islam through persuasion and appeal to soul and conscience, away from the language of violence, exaggeration and exclusivism.

  • A big fault in the article!
He is not Abu Bakr Siddiq but Abu Bakr al-baghdadi.

  • Dear Imran,

You say: "After pronouncing these fatwas they go home, eat dinner and peacefully go to sleep. In the present day world they have to devise ways to move Muslim youth from joining the ISIS and its murderous hordes"

What better way can there be than to warn the Muslim youths as per the concluding statement of the above renunciation that reads as follows:

"The most brutal campaign of terror, which is unfolding before our eyes in different forms, from sectarian killing, suicide bombing at mosques and churches, blowing up girls schools, acid attacks on women, kidnapping of school girls, throwing to killing the Christians and Yazidis, all dissident fellow Muslims, beheading of journalists and posting of the gruesome barbaric acts on the Internet and storming airports, civil courts and Parliament houses,  is nothing but a viscous campaign to transmute the character of Islam from a religion of peace and enlightenment to a cult of bestial violence and “Naked Terrorism“ and “Ignorance”(Jahilliyah). In historical perspective, it is a grand conspiracy to take Islam back to the “Pre-Islamic” era, which is bound to fail as history’s clock cannot be set fourteen centuries backwards." [This obviously is a clear warning to all Muslim youths not to be misled by ISIS]

I have done my bit and taken my dinner and have my sleep. Let others also do their bit and declare that they regard the ISIS as terror apostates of Islam who have forfeited their claim to faith based on the precedent that is there and take dinner and go to bed. If all the Muslim youths of the world will do this or think in this line, ISIS will not be able to hoodwink Muslim youth into their ranks in the name of Islam.
Making a bold statement challenging the legitimacy of ISIS on religious ground is far more difficult than passing general comment and doing nothing even by pen.

  • To be a Muslim one has to proclaim belief in Allah and his prophet. No jehadi says that he doesn't believe in Allah. How then they are going to expelled from fold of Islam. Muslims are proud of having no central authority like Pop.
Since there is no such authority and muslims will not agree to have one there is no chance to expell them from Islam.
Declaring some non-muslim is not in hands of Muslims though they keep takfeerism in practice.
Hindus have no binding central authority over them. So logic behind their expulsion is flawed.

  • These fatwas declaring terrorists as 'not Muslim' or 'not in Islam' is old and has lost meaning for rest of the non-Muslim world. It is considered a cop out by others for the simple reason those who pronounce these judgments believe they have done their duty. After pronouncing these fatwas they go home, eat dinner and peacefully go to sleep. In the present day world they have to devise ways to move Muslim youth from joining the ISIS and its murderous hordes and let non-Muslims observe effects of their efforts.

  • We should first declare ISIS to be "Enemies of Humanity". Enemies of humanity should automatically be expelled from the Muslim fold. But who is going to do it? We do not have a central authority that can take such decisions.
