On the subway, strange glances and occasional stares tend to be a usual occurrence. What with the horrors taking place in the world (every night, it seems, another headline), villains masquerading as ‘Muslims’ (a statement which couldn’t be further from the truth), climates of fear fueled by media furnaces churning out specifically constructed hateful rhetoric…as a Muslim woman who observes Hijab, such moments have, unfortunately, come to be expected. Such stares are neither justified nor warranted, but they happen…

Freshly minted zealot Muslims who abhor women visiting Sufi shrines, historic tombs, mausoleums and graves of the Prophet’s companions (Sahaba) and other great spiritual figures should rethink their position in the light of well-established Islamic traditions. Equating women’s visit to holy shrines with the pre-Islamic pagan practice of moaning and wailing at graves is untenable….

Around the time I got pregnant, I was deeply impressed by a CNN iReport, "Why I Raise My Children Without God" written by a Texan mother who outlined under succinct subheads all the reasons why god is a pretty useless concept to teach kids: "God is a bad parent and role model... God is not logical... God is not fair... God does not protect the innocent... God is not present... God Does Not Teach Children to Be Good... God Teaches Narcissism... It all made tremendous sense then and it makes tremendous sense now...

Miteri relationships seem to be disappearing as times change. I feel as if Nepalese society is turning more self-centric, religion-centric and caste- and ethnicity-centric, one sign of which is the hate speech you can find on social media. But there is still a reason for me to be happy. My 10-year-old niece has also been in a "Miteri relationship" for the last four years. My niece, like me, is a Muslim, but her "blood sister" is a Hindu Brahmin.....

What kind of world is this that does nothing apart from holding conferences when hospitals are being pounded; the bodies of small children are being pulled from bombed-out buildings while wounded toddlers scream for their dead mothers! The words of a small boy forced to bury his baby brother because there is no one left still ring in my ears. “Why was I not taken instead?” he said through his sobs....

I somehow managed to visit Sonargaon (the golden city), the administrative and commercial centre of pre-British rulers that finds mentions in the travel memoirs of Ibn-e-Batuta and Ralph Fitch. It also has Panam City which houses a cluster of around 52 mansions inspired by European architecture, built in the 19th century. Hindu cloth merchants stayed there once upon a time....

Bangladesh: Extremist Spike
S. Binodkumar Singh

Alhamdulillah, By the grace of Almighty Allah, the Mujahidin of Ansar Al-Islam [AQIS, Bangladesh branch] were able to assassin Xulhaz Mannan and his associate Samir Mahbub Tonoy. They were the pioneers of practicing and promoting homosexuality in Bangladesh. They were working day and night to promote homosexuality among the people of this land since 1998 with the help of their masters, the US crusaders and its Indian allies..

I watched the celebrations after Bin Laden was killed. I can only hope that moment provided some amount of closure to the families of his victims. The deeper he went into hiding, though, the more he lost his terror grip on me. My favourite detail to come out of the compound raid — other than the stash of pornography ....

For ISIS and Al-Qaeda's Nusra, this status quo is ideal in Syria in terms of preying on civilians' tragedies to increase recruitment, emerge as a hard-line alternative to the more moderate groups and confirm the conspiratorial sentiment that the West is allied with Assad. Given the brutal nature of the war and the very low likelihood for an action plan to protect civilians, Srebrenica moments are only bound to repeat in Syria....

Since November, ISIS’s pseudo-caliphate has lost forty per cent of its territory in Iraq and ten per cent in Syria, as well as tens of thousands of fighters, tons of arms, and hundreds of millions of dollars stored in warehouses that have been bombed by the U.S.-led coalition. ISIS fighters are dying faster than they can be replaced. For the first time, ISIS no longer seems invincible.....

The high point of her trip was going to a Mandir so that she could ring the bells loudly as she had seen so many times on screen! Many well-meaning Indian Muslim modernists like the Aga Khan III and Syed Ameer Ali wrote letters of appeal to Ataturk asking him to preserve the institution of Caliphate, to even become the Caliph himself, but Ataturk refused to budge. There are many historians and scholars of constitutional law who have questioned Ataturk’s decision to follow the French model instead of the British model that would have accommodated some role for religion....

In cases of people who have left to join Jihadis in Syria or elsewhere, the chances of getting them back are slim, Köhler says. “Maybe 5%.” So the key is to stop them going in the first place. He recalls “night-time conversations with mothers and sisters calling to say a son is on Skype from Syria, his father is talking to him in the next room, and our job is to try to keep him chatting”. Köhler says the longer the dialogue can be kept up – talking about the family pet, fond memories of family life – the higher the chance is to save them.....

This wilful closed-mindedness is not an inherent feature of Islam. A thousand years ago, Muslim societies were open and curious, while Christian Europe was insular and fearful of “blasphemy.” Aristotle’s books were translated and studied in Baghdad and Córdoba, and banned in Paris and Rome. No wonder the Muslim world was then the home to groundbreaking discoveries in science, medicine and mathematics. In theology, too, Muslim thinkers like Ibn Rushd, also known as Averroës, developed sophisticated arguments that would inspire Christian thinkers....

Amidst the failed confidence-building measures between India and Pakistan, a Facebook video posted by the daughter of a Kargil War martyr has given a strong message to policymakers of both countries without uttering a single word......

He pointed to China, which has imprisoned some opposed to a state campaign to remove crosses from churches, and Iran’s majority-Shiite regime, where Sunnis, Christians and Baha’is have been persecuted, imprisoned and even sentenced to death on dubious unrelated charges. And in Pakistan more people are on death row or serving life sentences for blasphemy charges than in any other nation in the world....
