Malaysia's ISIS dilemma
Joseph Chinyong Liow

The recent emergence of an ISIS recruitment video featuring young Malay-speaking (and possibly also Indonesian) boys attending religious classes and engaging in weapons training in ISIS-held territory has caused a furore in Malaysia. Estimates of the number of Malaysian fighters in ISIS - the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria militant group - vary from 60 to almost 150....

Religious extremism has been condemned as “un-Islamic” by the more moderate Moslems. But the Quran admonishes that “unto whom battle is declared, permission is granted by Allah to fight back, because he is oppressed.” Most scholars adjudge that the wrong interpretation of this prudential injunction is the cause of extremism in most sects. They further warn that Islam does not harbour violence and controversy....

"Most people thought I was Christian because I was not veiled like the majority of Muslim girls in Cairo, and also because most of my university friends were Copts."Many veiled girls who found out I'm Muslim would persistently ask me to wear the Hijab. Their concern about my religion, my beliefs or how I dressed baffled me and was really annoying....

Islamic political parties constitute the most tangible institutional manifestation of diverse schools of political Islam, ranging from the most militant to the moderate. They advocate diverse and at times contradictory ideological orientations and responses to major concerns in the contemporary Islamic world with regard to social justice, human rights and the position of women and minorities....

Many Muslim militants were previously not very religious at all and come from families that do not regularly attend the mosque. Also notable is that a significant number of them have a criminal record. Due to this heterogeneity, it is impossible to create a precise profile of the group of those at risk. Policymakers and the media have repeatedly called on Muslims to distance themselves from Salafism and Jihadism. But what exactly are they supposed to distance themselves from? Salafism and the Jihadism associated with it represent a crude and simple-minded ideology that randomly picks up elements of Islam and exploits them for its own ends.....

Homophobia in Pakistan
Zeeba T Hashmi

Families are hardly ever around to support them and refuse to accept that their children are born with a different orientation. There have also been Fatwas issued by several clerics against homosexuals. There have been incidents of how gays have been brutally murdered with clubs and stones for their sexual preference....

Despite Arab revolutionaries' dream of equality and empowerment for all, the cause of female emancipation has taken such a battering that the dream has turned into a nightmare for many women across the region. This is nowhere more poignantly illustrated than with the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)....

In the Qur’an Allah had informed us that people can ask whatever they want from Allah. His knowing Allah’s might and compassion would always enable him to be hopeful about every matter. This morality is the one Allah commanded in the Qur’an. And carrying out this command of Allah turns into a great blessing for people….

Religious Tolerance in Islam
Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi

The Prophet of Islam faced much difficulty and opposition in his own birth- place, the city of Mecca. He was eventually forced to migrate to Medina. But in spite of all the opposition and even physical torture that his followers suffered in Mecca, Prophet Muhammad always approached the unbelievers of Mecca with tolerance....

Don Quixote
Najam Sethi

Now the “dharna” seems like an illusion of the past and Mr Sharif is firmly in the saddle. He said the Taliban were “misguided Muslims” who should be walked the talk. Now he admits they are terrorists who should be eliminated. He said intra-party elections in the PTI were unprecedentedly free and fair....

An Ottawa Imam Who Gets Things Done
Mohammed Azhar Ali Khan

Imam Malam was the only imam in Ottawa who was not an employee. He led the daily and Friday prayers and the Taraweeh prayers, managed the finances, controlled the administration and programs and helped with Nikahs, bathing bodies and burials. He received no salary....

Selective Thinking
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

The Quran tells us that God gave human beings something that He did not give any other creature—and that is ‘trust’. It is this ‘trust’ that has made man the most honourable of all creatures....

Who killed Sabeen? I have no answer to that. Is the culprit some radical organisation whose raison d’etre is the distortion of religious teachings, the threat of “azaab” on the “disobedient”, the Fatwas against those who they think “err”....

No matter what combination of factors led to the emergence of ISIS - the unchecked growth of Islamophobia, covert or over hatred of Islam, its Prophet and the Muslim community, highly discriminative reporting on Muslims and Islam in the Western media, the deadly and devastating  fallout of American wars against terror or any other political developments in the post 9/11 era, the fact remains, ISIS and its affiliates pose a new threat to the global Muslim community that is potentially far more dangerous than all the death and destruction in the Muslim lands in the post 9/11 era.……

The Red Mosque also has named its central library after bin Laden and, on November 29, 2014, the extremist all-girl students of Jamia Hafsa, a Madrasa in the Red Mosque Network, released a video in support of ISIS, urging all Pakistani Jihadis to join forces with the terrorist organization. Maulana Aziz refused to condemn the video, instead remarking, “I don’t know why these boys are reluctant to say that we support the organization which wants to implement the Islamic system....

A War to End Jihad
Eugene Rogan

Ironically, the threat of jihad played more powerfully on the anxieties of British war planners than the call to jihad aroused colonial Muslims. France's strict secular laws ban the display of any 'ostentatious sign of religion' from official public spaces like schools. This includes items like a headscarf, a skullcap or a large cross. Freedom?
Yaqoob Khan Bangash

The right to life is the most fundamental right in a society. From it stems other rights such as freedom of association, expression, education, equal treatment before law, and so on. Pakistan is sadly failing in the provision of this fundamental right. Even the leaders of the freedom movement would have never thought that one day Pakistan would fail in ensuring this basic right....

The foundation stone of this decades’ long rivalry is laid upon sectarian differences, with Saudi Arabia presenting itself as the leader of Sunni Muslims and Iran acting as a messiah for the Shias. The Islamic State, in the authors’ opinion, is attracting not only those who want to fight, but also those who are searching for a “more pious and religious life.” “The call of ISIL—which says it wants teachers, nurses and engineers, not just fighters – can appear to some as an attractive alternative,” the authors speculate, adding that the new Caliphate is perceived by inhabitants of Central Asia as a change from “the post-Soviet life….

The Muslim philosophers, who read Aristotle mostly through the eyes of Plato, were already familiar with the term "wisdom" (Hikmah) from the Quran and the sayings of the prophet of Islam....
