Before psycho-analyzing Imran Khan’s colourful personality and determining where does PTI stand in the Pakistani political spectrum- whether it’s a centre-left (liberal) or a centre-right (conservative) party - let us first draw a distinction between politics and culture. A democratic system of governance falls in the category of politics while liberalism as a value-system falls in the category of culture......
In a polarized region and a complicated world, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria presents a unifying threat to a broad array of countries, including the United States. What’s needed to confront its nihilistic vision and genocidal agenda is a global coalition using political, humanitarian, economic, law enforcement and intelligence tools to support military force. In addition to its beheadings, crucifixions and other acts of sheer evil, which have killed thousands of innocents in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, including Sunni Muslims whose faith it purports to represent, ISIS….
Principles of democracy cannot stand true in spirit unless much needed reforms in the electioneering process are made that can ensure representation of all segments of society. Without their voice, the election process remains dubious, despite the fact that it has been enshrined in the writ of the land and strategically designed ballot protocols are being followed.....
The wild card in the Saudi deck is Bandar, the flamboyant former ambassador to Washington. When he was head of Saudi intelligence and paymaster to Saudi allies in Syria and Lebanon, he was an unpredictable – and in Washington’s eyes, sometimes untrustworthy – operator Some Americans feared Bandar’s covert efforts in the Syrian civil war were unintentionally spawning Al-Qaeda terrorists. U.S. officials were relieved when Bandar was removed….
Either we reject the Islamic State and groups like it in the clearest possible terms, or we allow them to become the face of Muslims. When we say “It’s not Islam,” we are dismissing the criminals as someone else’s problem. The truth is, nobody else is going to deal with them. It might seem easier to evade this responsibility, but the price of doing so will be heavy. Because, to the rest of the world, that horrific picture is what Muslims have become. If we don’t do something now, that image will be the world’s perception of us for years to come.....
The Salafist religious ideology takes precedence in the Saudi religious establishment's fatwas and opinions. The religious establishment’s main weakness is the intellectual stagnation which has plagued it amid the surrounding changes. Its methodological rigidity prevented it from properly interacting with the successive waves of change and precluded it from rising up to meet the challenges and necessities of the time. As a result, the religious scholars are silent concerning the present turmoil in the Muslim world, because they would rather adhere to the king’s opinions. I may further venture to say that the scholars completely agree with the state’s stance toward the Muslim Brotherhood, for example. For instance, they reject, from a purely unwavering Salafist viewpoint, the activism of this movement, as well as its politics and ambition to attain power. However, they do not see the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation. Characterizing it as such would require an ideological and doctrinal adaptation that, according to scholars, requires exonerating proof. In other words, the Saudi religious scholars lack the analytical reasons or the political jurisprudence needed to take such a stance. This in itself is another indication of the religious establishment’s weakness. This could be compared to the scholars’ position during the 19th-century civil war that ravaged the second Saudi state. One should not forget the words of Abdul Latif bin Abdul Rahman, the most prominent Wahhabi of the time.
Why did Erdoğan draw this historical connection? One explanation is he had to give lip service to Atatürk, as every Turkish politician has to do, whatever his thoughts are. But still, this connection was something that went beyond lip service. Another explanation is Erdoğan turned into an “Atatürkist,” embracing all the policies and the ideological legacy of the Supreme Leader. But one must be quite naïve to think that way, because the ideological differences between Erdoğan and Atatürk are still all too obvious……
Following the cooperation between the U.S. and Iran over Iraq, Tehran is now helping northern Iraq in its struggle against ISIL. This has come as surprise to many, since Iran had been keeping its distance toward Arbil, fearing their independence bid would provoke the Kurds in Iran, too. Cooperation between Iran and Saudi Arabia is also highly likely soon…..
ISIL poses more moral dilemmas concerning the question of who is to be held responsible for such horrendous religious ideology and politics. Is it Islam itself that contains the seeds of radicalism? Is it Western powers that have long encouraged radical Islam in the name of political/strategic interests? Is it the sociology of the alienated Muslim youth? Is it the travesty of Western nihilism in the post-liberal age? All of the questions on the relation between religious faith and political convictions are doomed to fail to find answers….
The pedigree of its leadership, outlined by an Iraqi who has seen documents seized by the Iraqi military, as well as by American intelligence officials, helps explain its battlefield successes: Its leaders augmented traditional military skill with terrorist techniques refined through years of fighting American troops, while also having deep local knowledge and contacts. ISIS is in effect a hybrid of terrorists and an army…..
The ISIS military strategy is brutal but also smart. The group’s annual reports – it has issued them since 2012 – detail its military methods and successes to impress its funders and backers. The videos posted online of executions are barbaric but also strategic. They are designed to sow terror in the minds of opponents, who, when facing ISIS fighters on the battlefield, now reportedly flee rather than fight…..

There were Islamic revolutions in a few countries after the Second World War where Islamic governments were established. But neither Pakistan In 1947 nor Iran, following Ayatollah Khomeini led Islamic revolution, advocate a Khilafat in Iran. Same is true of the Islamist Ikhwan ul Muslimeen recently in Egypt. This is because the Quran does not specify Khilafat as a form of government for Muslims. All it stresses is good governance, honouring human and religious rights to all the communities living under its rule. The form of government can be any based on Islamic and Qur'anic principles. ... It is a paradox then that though none of the political and ideological outfits of Muslims envisages the establishment of Khilafat as a part of Islamic political structure; they create hype over Khilafat and support Jihadi organisations in the name of Khilafat which does not exist in their book of ideology. Isn’t it bewildering?....
Thankfully, the demonstrators were persuaded to withdraw without any bloodshed but the complete inability of a demoralised police force, though present in sizeable numbers, to tackle the law and order situation effectively, has again left the administration red-faced......
All Reformers, past and present are primarily concerned with bringing radical changes to existing malpractices in human societies. These changes are often strongly opposed when they erode the privileges of some sections of society. In particular, when changes impinge on the old social and religious sectors, the privileged class and clergy counters it with a campaign to malign the very character of the reformer. The tool used is the holy Apocryphal corpus. For Muslims it is called Hadith....
Whether Prime Minister Sharif or Tahir-ul-Qadri and Khan initiated the move to military mediation and how the military has played into the development of the crisis itself are questions that are at this stage difficult to determine. But senior politicians and constitutional experts have denounced it as a national disgrace that reflects badly on the commitment to genuine democracy across the political spectrum…..
