Bangladesh wants to become a middle-income country by 2021. You need to create wealth. Yes, you have been achieving annual growth of 5.5% for the last 15 years. But a certain part of the population – based on caste, geographical location, level of education and the underprivileged – cannot get benefit of this growth. Our goal is to empower the underprivileged population to take their share in the growth of the economy, not just to give them subsidy…..

This is the DNA of Israel. Israel has always over-reacted to resistance from Palestinians. And you have seen this one after the other – Operation Cast Lead, the First Lebanon War, the Second Lebanon War, the operations in Gaza and the fight against the Second Intifada. It has always been the same language of disproportionate aggression.....

Passive tolerance can often mean simple indifference to the religious ‘other’. A higher level of tolerance, Heredia says, is love and acceptance of people of other faiths. At this stage, there is a growing recognition that each of our religious truth-claims is necessarily partial and limited and needs to be complemented by the equally partial truth-claims of other faiths. But even here, the ‘other’ remains the ‘other’. However, at the highest—mystical or spiritual—level of tolerance that Heredia talks about—the ‘other’ and the ‘self’ cease to exist in contradistinction to each other and together merge into the One. This is the level reached by mystics in all religious traditions, for whom different religions as such no longer exist…..

I was looking for material to explain Sania Mirza’s trauma with Hindutva’s ultra-nationalists when I remembered that Dilip Kumar had undergone similar experiences, of being called a Pakistan sympathiser, even a Pakistani agent. It is another matter that Muslim zealots in both countries have targeted India’s most emulated movie icon for adopting a Hindu screen name instead of sticking to Yousuf Khan, which came with his Peshawari Muslim identity….

Pakistani democracy has done things to itself which it now finds impossible to get rid of. We can take it as an axiom of ‘modern’ civilisation that the state has no business to legislate about religion. It is not for the state to say who is an infidel, who a pagan or who a righteous Muslim. And please let us not take Saudi Arabia as a model. The Saudi kingdom is unique unto itself. We can take its money and say thanks but it is not a model that any other country, while remaining sane, should care to emulate.

The other side of it is that the Muslims in Nigeria did not also understand because the two parties were supposed to have played a good game in addressing this but the Christians now want to play the blame game and the Muslims want to play the defense game so when these two parties were busy defending themselves, permit me to say that our government that’s supposed to act as the sole authority that’s supposed to maintain law and order now hides under these debates: “You’re the cause of this, there is a meeting between Muslims you eliminate Christians, No, no, no, these people are not Muslim. Probably they are Christians hiding as Muslims to cause problems.”…..

Restoring the people's confidence in the judiciary requires the establishment of a class of pro-democracy and pluralistic judges who serve no political party, organization or interest groups but the law itself. This is what Turkey witnessed today…..

Being a co-religionist can only be one basis for a common identity; it cannot be the only basis for forming a nation: culture, language, ancestry, geographic location and many other commonalities can be the basis of our identity as a nation. To privilege one group over other groups is a recipe for disaster in a multicultural, multilingual and multi-religious society. Does this question the status of the two-nation theory? Clearly it does….

Recognizing women’s multiple and significant roles—and their experiences as both participants and victims—is critical to developing appropriate responses to women’s needs inside Syria and in refugee communities. It is also important to ensuring their ongoing and meaningful participation in determining Syria’s future. These women are not only bearing the burden of conflict but persevering in spite of it, often at great personal risk…..

World Media on ISIS and Iraq Part - 11
Compiled by New Age Islam Edit Desk

Iran doubled down efforts to mobilise ideologically driven Shia militias that were already acting as paramilitary forces, assisting the Iraqi army in counterterrorism operations. The shadowy Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps General Qasim Suleimani was in Iraq, personally visiting checkpoints on the outskirts of Baghdad, making sure that Iraqi government forces and allied militias were prepared to prevent an assault on the capital......

World Media on Israel and Gaza Part - 11
Compiled By New Age Islam Edit Desk

The website said that Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi are in “constant communication” running daily conferences and sometimes more, according to the website’s sources. That communication is done over secure telephone lines, but such is the political sensitivity of their close co-operation that for really important messages human couriers are used. A special Israeli plane is parked permanently at Cairo’s military airport, ready to lift off whenever top-secret messages between the Egyptian president and the Israeli Prime Minister need to be delivered by hand. .....

Perhaps, the Al Qaida in Ben Ghazi is aware that Abu Bakr’s caliphate has drawn criticism and adverse Fatwas from the Islamic world on the basis that it was not sponsored by the Ijma of the Muslims and Abu Bakr was not elected by any Shura of the Elders. So if Al Qaida too had declared its government in Benghazi a Caliphate, it would have met the same fate. So probably to avoid any religious blowback or fatwa from Al Qaradhawi or any senior cleric, it avoided the use of the word Caliphate. By doing so, it will also not antagonise the two most powerful oil rich nations of the region – Saudi Arabia and Qatar -- as they will believe that an Emirate cannot be an enemy of an Emirate while the Caliphate is definitely an enemy of an Emirate or a Kingdom......

Buddhist-Muslim Dialogue
G. N. Khaki and Shabir Ahmad Mugloo

Compassion and Mercy are also central to Buddhist ethics. Buddhism places much emphasis on Metta (loving kindness), Karuna (compassion), Mudita (sympathetic joy), and Upekkha (equanimity) as means of avoiding resentment. According to the Buddha, love and compassion are be generated only in a mind that is free from anger and hatred.....

Increasingly, young people around the world see the connection between the abductions in Nigeria, the rape and murder of young girls in India, so-called “honor killings” of Pakistani girls who marry against their families’ wishes, genital mutilation of girls across Africa, and child-trafficking for full-time work, often in slave-labour conditions…..

The police, who are supposed to look identical from Sabang on the tip of Aceh to Merauke on the far end of Papua, would become segregated. Such variations in uniforms would lead to unequal treatment. And there is always the possibility that there are elements of society who don’t want to be served by police wearing veils, or other groups who prefer a veiled officer.  The wearing of the Hijab, therefore, would create unnecessary problems for the police….

After the 2011 Arab uprisings, the Jordanian government initially relaxed certain restrictions on public space. Protests and public criticism of the country’s leaders, nearly unheard of in previous years, became common. Major violations, such as the arrest of journalists, decreased. But instability in neighbouring states has caused the government to tread back – by issuing new and more extreme anti-terrorism laws, banning of books or media outlets that do not comply with restrictive laws, and pressuring opposition groups….

"The ISIS jihadis are terrorists and can't be called Sunnis. They're defaming Islam and acting at the behest of the enemies of Islam. They've demolished shrines of prophets as they're opposed to visiting shrines of Sufis. Some Kashmiri youths might have got influenced by their ideology..."

He is threatening a storm akin to the one that overthrew the regime and political system in Egypt three years ago. But the experience of Egypt is instructive. The army was called out in aid of civil power to protect the Hosni Mubarak regime from popular discontent on the streets but soon thereafter ousted the regime on the pretext of holding new elections and subsequently seized power on its own account. Much the same thing happened in Pakistan in 1977.....

It's no secret that Pakistan's outlook and relations with the world have been influenced heavily by global heavyweights such as the US and Saudi Arabia. As always - and unlike Pakistan - Saudi Arabia has chosen to stay silent on the thorny issue of Gaza rather than risk offending the western superpowers…..
