Bakhsh (1830-1907) was a Sufi Pir and poet from Mirpur in modern-day Azad Kashmir, though his ancestors hailed from the Gujarat district in Pakistani Punjab. Known in Pakistan as Rumi-e-Kashmir, I learnt about Bakhsh from a friend who hails from Poonch on the Indian side of the Line of Control. My friend grew up literally on the border which is not a border, watching Doordarshan and PTV alike, making him a bit of an Indian and a bit of a Pakistani. .....

New Khaki Tactic: Ousting PM Instead of Parliament
Ayesha Siddiqa in an interview with Adnan Farooq

This is an intense political battle in which the Supreme Court is not neutral but a party as well. Look at the Supreme Court's comparative behaviour. There are times when it bails out murderers and looters but does not spare the ruling party in particular. Its wrath is mainly for the PPP and the chief judge seems to be making sure that he can ensure the PPP government's ouster especially since he is now worried about his son being investigated....

O you who believe! Observing the fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious) (Al-Baqarah 2: 183) Fasting is an act of worship and obedience to God. It humbles the human heart and makes conscience of God’s presence. Fasting also helps us to control our basic human desires such as thirst and hunger. The fasting person feel pangs of hunger during the fasting day and can empathize with the less fortunate who feel similar pangs due to poverty as a part of daily life. Breaking of the fast each day is also a great joy and mercy from God....

Some people are born rich, with a silver spoon in their mouths while others strive to become rich. Similarly, there are people who are weak financially and desperate to make ends meet. The Quran recognises such a nature of society and declares it as God’s will. The Holy Book says “…It is We who portion out between them their livelihood….” (43:32). Thus a society is like a human hand whose five fingers are not equal, but they are part of one hand and their strength lies in their unity....

The perpetrators of the Bengali genocide never learnt anything from history. This time the playing field is Balochistan and the targets are Baloch intellectuals. There has always been a cleansing by occupiers and dictators of the intelligentsia who stand out from the masses. The occupiers have reasons to do this as intellectuals and artists, based on their popularity and position in society, are the kind of people who would be most able to influence the masses....

Germany's new president stated earlier this year that Muslims are part of Germany, but that he would not say Islam was. But with more than 4 million German Muslims, and the principle of religious freedom enshrined in the country's constitution, how could Islam possibly not be part of Germany? Behind the scenes, decisive steps are being taken institutionally to make Islam a more integrated part of Germany. Two years ago, the German Council for Science and Humanities recommended that Islamic theology be taught at German universities, along with training for imams and religious teachers. ...

9/11 Was a Turning Point for the American Muslim Community
Zahra Billoo in an interview with Angelo Lopez

9/11 was a turning point for the American Muslim community, one that really shook many into civic engagement. People started to realize that they needed to do education around who they were and what they believed, very quickly. Many began to host open house events both in their own homes and mosques, to open their doors and answer any questions their fellow Americans may have. Additionally, American Muslims are looking inward to ensure there are no violent elements within the community and that people are not misinterpreting the faith....

A lot of debate has taken place on whether Prophet (SAW) travelled to the Heavens spiritually or physically. And in this context the great Islamic Scholar, Maulana Maududi (RA) in his Tafheem-ul-Quran explains in simple terms that the journey was not spiritual (or a dream) but a physical one. He explains on the basis of the reference of the following verses of the Holy Quran that the journey was not spiritual but of physical nature.  Allah says in the Holy Quran,  “Glorified be He Who Carried His servant by night from the Inviolable Place of Worship to the Far Distant Place of Worship the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, that We might show him of Our tokens! Only He is the Hearer, the Seer.”   (Bani Israel, V, 1)...

A few Muslim scholars from our past have duped us in believe that God is hateful to others... God ain't. God is neither a villain nor a bad guy. God is kind, merciful and just and wants his creation to get along and live in harmony. There are many verses that guide one to be righteous. We should not accept any translation of Quran that makes God a villain of his own creation. Those translations reduce him to Rabbul Muslimeen from Aalameen....

Along with the establishment of a unified cultural and ideological model, tailored to the Western neoliberal standards, globalization, however strange it may seem, stimulates the emergence of a new format of the Islamic world and gives an additional impulse to its awakening process. The latter has serious perspectives of becoming not only a crucially important process for the Islamic world itself in the 21st century, but it will also influence the development of the whole humanity....

A person’s mettle is, however, tested by how he deals with the surfeit of energy that considerable wealth represents and the lack of it as well. As some philosopher has put it: Money doesn’t change men, it merely unmasks them. If a man is naturally selfish or arrogant or greedy, the money brings that out. That is all.” There are well-known examples of people acquiring great wealth and in the process, heading towards self-destruction. But can wealth lead to good and the betterment of society? Of course, it can. We find some brilliant examples in our own history. It is quite instructive to see how some of the companions of the Prophet (pbuh) coped with the enormous energy that wealth brings with it.....

Executive Summary: The paper begins with an introduction to the Qur’anic warnings against the Christians and the Jews (1) but without going into details, comes straight to its concluding exhortations on religious tolerance (2) and to its concluding message on religious pluralism (3). Sub-heading (4) captures the Qur’an’s approval of some of the People of the Book (Christians and Jews). The discourse then jumps to the Qur’an’s common criteria of divine Judgment for all believing communities, (5) and complements this with arguments that refute any Qur’anic basis for inter-faith enmity or hatred (6). Its concluding sub-heading (7) demonstrates that there is no Qur’anic basis to prohibit the construction of churches, synagogues or any houses of pure worship in Muslim countries – an issue that concerns all minorities in the Muslim countries today and conceivably results from a deep fear of the Muslim theologians and leadership of their youth abandoning an exclusive, atavistic and globally trivialized faith to live more comfortably in the pluralistic and progressive society of the secular world without the tag of Islam branding them as anything but noble. The sub-headings speak for themselves and conclusively establish the theme of this article.
