A cosmopolitan humanist, he rejected narrow-minded bigotry and refused to let distinctions of religion or culture interfere with his choice of friends. During a brief life that fell short of 43 years, he lived in Amritsar, Bombay, Delhi and Lahore, forging friendships that survived the arbitrary frontiers of 1947…

Now, yes we have literature coming from the classical Islamic tradition still obsessed with you as a woman. You have to think about your role as a mother and wife. This is what I’m always saying. We are obsessed in Islamic tradition with speaking about women and the role and the functions in fact within the society which is completely wrong. A woman who decides for herself to wear the headscarf, you cannot say that she is alienated or self-alienated…

The movement, founded by Hassan al-Banna in 1928 in Egypt, has always made pragmatic alliances with regimes -- those of King Farouk from 1936; the Free Officers who ousted him in 1952 (though from 1954 the Brothers turned against Gamal Abdel Nasser and were then severely repressed); and Anwar Sadat from 1970 (who used the Brothers against the Nasserists and the left)…

Conversing with Shabnam made me think of her super hit film Aina, which is a classic tale about two lovers from different social classes and their struggle to be with each other. Aina was as much a love story as it was a criticism of the sharpening class divide. Its closing scene, in which Rita (Shabnam) slaps her father, and where her mother says: ‘you have not slapped your father, but the mentality that believes in differences between the poor and the rich’ is poignant…

Pakistan Hindu Welfare Council, “The Quran is held in esteem by every Hindu.” He strongly condemned Jones’ act and called for immediate action by the US government to prevent such acts from being repeated in future. I don't oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, … That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics…

What happens when someone who wants to deal with insomnia enrolls in a rigorous class in a course in Zen meditation?  Or if someone who wants to create more spiritual space in her life registers for a health-oriented hatha yoga class?  Most likely, they will join the long list of meditation drop-outs, people who say, “I tried that, but it just didn’t work for me.”…

We had a long conversation and the talk veered round to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and the attack he is under from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Now, I have had good reason to believe that the BJP picks on Chidambaram essentially because he is sitting on a lot of explosive information about saffron terrorism in this country. I have been told by many top cops in Bombay that saffronists may be involved in a lot more terrorist activity in India these past years than just the Malegaon blasts or that at Ajemr Sharif and in the Samjhauta Express. Particularly with situations in Maharashtra – like the discovery of false Muslim beards and caps from a saffron hideout in Gadchiroil district a few months ago – they have shared much of their information with Chidambaram because they find their political masters in Bombay (Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil) too politically naive to shoulder the burden of those facts.

Sharp rhetoric and militant views of Hafiz Saeed regarding the international fraternity have left Pakistan red faced on the external front. Saeed is not only the Chief of Jamat-ud-Dawa but also responsible for all the organisational matters of Difa-e-Pakistan Council.

There is a section of people who thinks Pakistan government is using Difa-e-Pakistan (Defence of Pakistan) Council for achieving political mileage on internal and external fronts. It was being used to deliver tough messages to political foes at home as well as to India, America and Europe. Hence, some powerful institutions of Pakistan government do not want Difa-e-Pakistan Council to become ineffective. But, Pakistan’s external affairs ministry has warned that if the said organisation is not brought under control, Pakistan will not only lose its credibility on international front but will have to face tough economic hardships in near future.

The Pentagon suspended the course in late April when a student objected to the material. The FBI also changed some agent training last year after discovering that it, too, was critical of Islam. The teaching in the military course was counter to repeated assertions by US officials over the past decade that America is at war against Islamic extremists, not the religion itself.
"They hate everything you stand for and will never coexist with you, unless you submit," the instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Dooley, said in a presentation last July for the course at Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk,Virginia. The college, for professional military members, teaches mid-level officers and government civilians on subjects related to planning and executing war.
Dooley also presumed, for the purposes of his theoretical war plan, that the Geneva conventions that set standards of armed conflict, are "no longer relevant".  He adds: "This would leave open the option once again of taking war to a civilian population wherever necessary (the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki being applicable to the Mecca and Medina destruction decision point)."...

Even in the shadows of the stage their white robes appear luminous. It's said that Rumi first started whirling in one of Konya's bazaars. Walking past a line of goldbeaters, he became so moved by the music of their rhythmic hammering accompanied by their gentle chanting of Allah's name that he raised his arm towards the sky and started to revolve in a state of awe, spinning and spinning until he reached oneness with his God….

They say beware of what you wish for; your wishes might just come true. All those who cheered for Barack Hussain Obama must be ruing the day and kicking themselves. What a crushing disappointment! The much feted prophet of change has turned out to be just another regulation politician, only interested in perpetuating and protecting his own power and interests. Principles, ideals and convictions….

Beyond the symbolism though, change will be limited. The Islamists have close ties to the ruling elite, they are moderate, rarely mention religion, and parliament's restricted powers mean they cannot push radical reform even if they want to. More hard-line Islamists who do seek radical change, and who represent an influential and often volatile part of society, are outside the political….

Karachi: Machiavellian Operations
Tushar Ranjan Mohanty

Continuing their policy of playing one group against another, reports indicate that Security Forces (SFs) were using the rival Arshad Pappu gang in the ‘operation’. Source indicated that the SFs had decided to ‘hand over’ Lyari to the Arshad Pappu gang after the ‘evacuation’ of PAC operatives. The PAC is allegedly linked to, and supported by, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan….

Pakistanis are right to see themselves as victims of terrorism and to be offended by American unilateralism in dealing with it. Last year alone, 4,447 people were killed in 476 major terrorist attacks. Over the last decade, thousands of soldiers and law enforcement officers have died fighting terrorists — both homegrown, and those inspired by Al Qaeda’s nihilist ideology….

The Supreme Court judgment has paved the way for progress in the right direction. The most enlightening aspect of the entire debate is the whole-hearted support of the Muslim leaders to this decision. Such mature reactions help the cause of the common people in the country and puncture the vicious agenda of those who wanted to use it as a tool to spread lies across the country.  In fact, a true implementation of this judgment will only help strengthen the cause of secularism in India and compel the government to focus on the work for the uplift of the community and not to work on issues which help build a negative propaganda against the Muslims in the country….
