Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and his Legacy

There are however, a number of predictions, all seemingly accurate, which are associated with Azad that seem to reinforce further his image as the sage of the age. He is said, amongst other things, to have predicted Pakistan’s dependence on western powers and growing discord between the religious right and liberals in Pakistan in an interview conducted in April 1946. The only problem is that the latter list of predictions has been transmitted to us through a dubious source. This source was Agha Shorish Kashmiri, a committed Ahrari leader who opposed the creation of Pakistan....

Defeatist Approach towards Doom and Death: Fate and Fatalism

Would I retain any glimmer of hope if I lose my house in floods, a son to hepatitis C or a daughter to childbirth? What if half of my family is blown up in a bomb blast during their yearly shopping excursion in the city before Eid? How can I live through the trauma of being caught in crossfire between militants and the armed forces and see my friends and family die all around me? How can I ever hope to not die and get on with my life? I, too, will need repeated doses of fatalism to survive. Resignation to one’s fate is a necessary evil and, perhaps, a powerful tool of survival...

It has been a creeping realisation for some time now whether the custodians of our faith are doing more damage to the Islamic philosophy than the so-called infidels. Considering how loudly they talk of the Islamic Shariah, it is incredible that the same energy is not used to abolish some appalling deviations from the Shariah that are considered God’s will on a scale, which is incredible in its universal acceptance and horrific in its frequency of application....

How Can the Media Better Cover Religion?

The media can earn respect and foster understanding by telling the truth, and writing stories about how a conservative, liberal and a moderate person views his own religion, rather than what a pastor, rabbi, pundit, imam, shaman or a clergy tells about other's religion. Religion as a part of daily reporting is relatively new, and is taking root over the last decade. Most major papers have a full time column devoted to it. A few have a daily column, like the Washington Post and Huffington Post....

The following article from Pakistan’s Urdu Press reveals how paranoia, victimhood and hatred of other religious communities are being promoted among Muslims in Pakistan. Sadly, a similar situation prevails in India’s Urdu press too. This may very well have been written by an Indian Muslim Urdu columnist. Regardless of the deeds or misdeeds of other communities, paranoia and victimhood should be known to be self-fulfilling prophecies.

The depth of hatred revealed in this article, for instance, towards Jews is a very common phenomenon among Muslims. Blaming them for the misdeeds of Zionists and the state of Israel is like blaming the entire Muslim community for the misdeeds of Islamists. Hating them or, for that matter, anyone else, and calling them unholy or dirty and invoking Islam’s sanction for this ill-feeling is an injustice towards and betrayal of our commitment to Islam and its pluralism.

Quoting the holy Quran’s verses meant for a certain period in history and as guidance for a certain situation in the infancy of Islam when the very survival of the few followers of Islam was in danger and treating them as universal exhortation amounts to vilification of Islam and Mohammad (saw). I wonder if there is some way mainstream Muslims can have a dialogue with hate-mongering Islamists in our midst and convince them to mend their ways in the interest of our religion and the world Muslim community which is facing myriad problems because of their conduct and approach. – Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

So dear readers buckle up and accompany me on a journey through time to Lahore in the 1950s, when life was uncomplicated, relationships sincere and celebrations affordable. Journalists Pay Ultimate Price in Search for Truth

IT was on May 31, 2011 that Saleem Shahzad’s broken body was found in Mandi Bahauddin, several kilometres from his home in Islamabad. Abducted, tortured and murdered, the journalist had previously complained of attempts to intimidate him by the powerful Inter Services Intelligence agency (ISI). And still the death toll rises. At least three journalists have been killed this year in attacks that appear related to their work. It is time for some measure of justice for those who have paid the ultimate price in their search for truth. ...

Indonesia's Ahmadis Look for a Home in a Novel 'Maryam'

How does it feel when you are not allowed to go to your own house? How does it feel to know that your house was burned down and someone else now occupies it? “Maryam,” the third novel of author Okky Madasari, is a story about the suffering of the repressed Ahmadiyya sect in a small coastal village called Gerupuk in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Maryam, the main character, was born and raised in an Ahmadiyya family. ...
