Who may suffer, other than Iranians?  In the long run, the shaky economies of Italy, Greece, and Spain, long dependent on Iranian oil, potentially raising further problems for an already roiling Euro zone.  And don’t forget the U.S. economy, or your own pocketbook, if gas prices go up, or even President Obama, if his bet on oil sanctions turns out to be an economic disaster in an election year. -- Michael Klare

In The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America, Andrew McCarthy demonstrates that leftists and political Islamists have mounted a dynamic double-front against American and Western traditions. McCarthy begins with the historical foundation for the deep natural attraction that draws Islamists and leftists to pursue many of the same ends by employing similar means.  The shared touchstone is centralized control of society for the end of accomplishing social justice -- at least, as respectively defined. -- Karen Lugo

Such cross-cultural evidence in Maltese towns with Arabic names like Mdina (not Medina) and Rabat, and a statue of the Virgin Mary on a church's baroque facade described in the inscription as “Sultanah“, make one wonder whether this little Mediterranean archipelago of three small islands is the forerunner of global universalism in which languages enrich each other and racial frontiers slowly fade out.  - Sunanda K. Datta-Ray

It is precisely such arrogance that led to the loss of Pakistan's eastern wing, and the creations of Bangladesh. More sagacious opinion in Pakistan is already recognizing a threat to the 'Federation' in the vicious cycle of state and rebel violence in Balochistan. It remains to be seen whether a military and political leadership - which appears to have embarked on a suicidal enterprise both within Pakistan and in its wider neighbourhood - has the capacity to learn any lessons from the enduring disaster that is its own history. -- Tushar Ranjan Mohanty

Mitti pao” (just forget about it),” the senior grave-digger shrugged his shoulders as he busied himself with his latest earthy assignment in a cemetery which was still open to the public. “Why should it bother us whether it is the Farishta government or the Shaheed? We do not discriminate, do we? We have no business with the immortals. And we know both the Farishtas and the Shaheeds are immortal … Mitti pao.”-- Ashaar Rehman (photo: Saadat Hasan Manto)

Pashtuns are believed to be the largest segmentary lineage society in the world today. They have been living in their defined homeland areas since ages, in a social order loosely defined by the code of Pashtunwali. They believe in the myth that they are children of one common ancestor, Qaise, who converted to Islam once he met the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  -- Asad Munir

Iranian politicians talk tough, but they have actually proven themselves to be masterful negotiators behind the scenes. Would you want to enter war against a country if you had 4% of the military budget of your opponent? And if the last two countries your enemy had attacked had ended up as devastated as Iraq and Afghanistan? Iran faces an American military force that dwarfs its own. Lastly, the United States possesses a whole series of military resources that no other country on the planet has access to. -- Omid Safi

Islam and its holy book Qur’an are a basis for a multicultural society. This was the refrain at JNU's international  conference on "Living in Peace and Harmony in a Multicultural World" on Feb 1-2, 2012. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi’s collection of books called Risala’i Nur was the inspiration behind the refrain and the conference itself. The conference was organized by Centre of Arabic and African Studies, JNU in collaboration with Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture, Turkey. Nursi was a Turkish theologian and philosopher who lived through a very tumultuous period in the history of that region. … Former Union Minister Arif Mohammad Khan inaugurated the conference and said that declaring people kafir (or unbelievers) amounted to shirk (ascribing partners to God). Since it is clear in the Qur’an that God is the judge of belief, in his view, whoever wants to share this power with God, is a mushirk. -- Juhi Shahin, NewAgeIslam.com (Photo: Bediuzzaman Said Nursi)

I believe at the heart of the world peace is the Israel Palestine conflict, it is the mother of all conflicts, and if we can find a solution to this, peace is on the horizon ready to shine on us. He told us the "individuals" were responsible for the bloodshed and not the religions;... He was crystal clear; you cannot annihilate, kill, hang or beat the religion, then why bark at it?-- Mike Ghouse

Rather than allowing events to drift towards a political or even military showdown, Maldivian President Mohammed “Anni” Nasheed has shown great fidelity to democratic principles in a country where none existed before him by stepping down from office with grace and poise. As President, Nasheed began well. With much help and cooperation from his predecessor, he could ensure a smooth transition when much trouble was feared. -- N. Sathya Moorthy

The incredible story of boy ‘terrorist' Mohammad Aamir whose youth was destroyed because of his wrongful arrest and 14-year long incarceration Mohammad Aamir had just turned 18, when one February day in 1998, he was ambushed by a police van. A month later, he found himself thrown against the cold, forbidding walls of a prison cell in the capital's Tihar jail. The charges were murder, terrorism and waging war against the nation. -- Vidya Subrahmaniam

To be more explicit, there is an urgent need for a major paradigm shift in Islamic religious thoughts and the scope and curriculum of traditional madrasas: they should be converted to universal houses of learning like the Western missionary schools with the same curricula and education system as in civil schools – with the addition of a Religion class. The Muslim students may be taught the fundamentals of the Qur’anic message and the non-Muslims, the fundamentals of their faith.

This definitely sounds radical if not revolutionary, as it purports to relegate the Hadith, now regarded as an eternal component of Islam like the Qur’an,  into its historical slot and bring to the fore, the Qur’anic message in its rightful place as a complete, universal, pluralistic and eternal font of guidance. What the Muslim elite and scholarship should be concerned is the truth – and this article has attempted to capture the truth in a very logical, systematic, unbiased and faithful manner drawing on most authentic resources. Hence it is worthy of serious evaluation and consideration. -- Muhammad Yunus, NewAgeIslam.com

Muslims need a theology of pluralism and inclusion, not a theology of exclusion and confrontation

Muslims in the United States need to develop an American Muslim sensibility, but mosques have been a hindrance in the process, says Salam Al-Marayati, President of the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC). The organisation works with American Muslims and represents their interests to decision-makers in government agencies, media outlets, interfaith circles and Hollywood studios. In an interview with Saif Shahin of NewAgeIslam.com, Al-Marayati says Muslims in the country and worldwide need “a theology of pluralism and inclusion, not a theology of exclusion and confrontation”. Edited excerpts:

Three of his six invitees were bearded Maulanas. They agreed with the need for revolution, but declared that it could only happen through mosque schools and madrasas. During our noisy three-hour meeting, they ranted against the existing education system as a western conspiracy to secularise Pakistan. One Maulana insisted that literacy was worthless without teaching “alif-se-Allah, bay-se-bandooq, jeem-se-jihad”. -- Pervez Hoodbhoy

It is a pity indeed that Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of Maldives, could not complete his full term and had to quit amidst a revolt by a section of the security forces, which was preceded by prolonged agitation on the streets by his opponents. As a genuine liberal democrat, Nasheed will indeed be missed, whatever his missteps in handling the galvanised political opposition. The real question is whether Nasheed’s progressive legacy can be preserved after his ouster. -- C. Raja Mohan

The triumph of the Islamist parties in the first democratic elections one year after the Arab Spring can be attributed primarily to their "politics of identity", a simplification of politics that reduces political action to ideological or religious slogans and is hence not equipped to deal with the crisis of democratic transformation in the countries in question. One option is the nationalist and democratic variant favoured by the revolutionary forces, the activists of Tahrir Square and similar "scenes of revolution" in other Arab countries. The other option would be a return to dictatorship by a different name. -- Elias Khoury

Economic sanctions, universally recognized as a prelude to war, strangle the Iranian people and their economy, all in the quixotic hope of inducing (coercing) "regime change" in Tehran. Meanwhile, the CIA and Mossad recruit train and then unleash Salafist terrorists such as Jundallah or Saddam Hussein's former henchmen, the cultic Mojahedin-e Khalq (MEK) for terror ops, just as they did in Libya when former Al Qaeda "emir," the MI6 asset Abdelhakim Belhaj was appointed chief of Tripoli's Revolutionary Military Council. -- Tom Burghardt

The aim of this article is to help overcome what this author has elsewhere on this website described the interpretational promiscuity or lack of interpretational consciousness among Muslims, both scholars as non –scholars, who often consider certain views taken by them to be Qur’anic or based on Sunna without even being aware of the interpretational assumptions   their views are based on and the interpretational implications they have. The article describes some major differences in interpretational assumptions governing what I call here pre-modern and modern Muslim approaches to interpretation of Qur’an and Sunna. -- Dr. Adis Duderija for NewAgeIslam.com
