Murtaza Razvi: He Who Could not be Tamed

Till the very end, he continued to write pieces that required exemplary courage, honesty and introspection. If the thought of personal safety crossed his mind, he didn’t allow his work to reflect that. All I can do now is to send out a silent prayer to him and his family. And hope to convey to him that he will be missed more than he can imagine. He, in turn, would talk with rare pride about his wife and their three angels – if memory serves me right, they are named Maya, Priya and Dina. …

What is the Pakistani Culture? Dragged Down by the Stone

I’ve always felt that what we were taught (and keep bleating about) as ‘Pakistan Ideology’ has been like a stone around our collective neck. A stone that keeps pulling us down, so much so that today, we as a nation are in danger of vanishing from the radar of engaging states. Through hectic and rigorous intellectual exercises and projects, nation states construct ideologies to base and justify their existence on….

A Tribute to Islam, Earthen but Transcendent

As in so much of the Islamic world, “Insha’Allah” — “if God wills it” — is how people punctuate conversations in this predominantly Muslim West African country. If you speak of starting a project, or taking a trip, or trying to pay a debt, the outcome is always understood to be conditional. The mosque is one of Africa’s most revered religious monuments. Constructed almost entirely from sun-dried mud bricks coated with clay, it is the largest surviving example of a distinctive style of African architecture. …

Afghanistan: The First Opium Win

Afghanistan’s annual opium harvest is coming, and the Taliban are expecting this year’s bumper crop to fund yet another season of political assassinations and coordinated attacks like the ones that struck Kabul and other Afghan cities this Sunday. Afghan opium is processed into heroin, which then floods the streets of cities, well, just about everywhere. The proceeds pay the Taliban’s fighters and suicide bombers. …

Mohamed Nasheed: Islamists have a stronger hold on power than ever in the Maldives

I'd like to be optimistic about the future: after all, I gave 20 years of my life fighting for democracy in the Maldives. The fact is that we have lost democracy just three-and-a-half years after our first multi-party elections, which were held in 2008. The man we fought against, Mr. Gayoom is back. Islamists have a stronger hold than ever on power, though they have never won an election. I fear that unless India, as well as other nations, unequivocally put their weight behind the call for early elections, very dark times lie ahead for my country….

Futile Battles Over Religious 'Authenticity'

Each religious tradition has been interpreted diversely by its votaries throughout history, which explains the bewildering variety of sects within each, with each claiming to represent the sole true understanding of their faith. In turn, each sect passionately denounces the rival interpretations of competing sects as 'deviant', 'false' or 'heretical' or even 'blasphemous'. In many cases, intra-sectarian rivalries have been much more fierce and bloody than inter-religious rivalries. …

Feminism in the Arab World: The Silent Revolution

Consider Arab women. The predominant image is of a passive, exotic and veiled victim-woman who reacts to events instead of actively participating in them. She is an impersonal object of communal stereotypes that sustain cultural prejudices. In fact, Arab societies are engaged in a process of immense and irreversible change in which women are playing a crucial role. …

Not only do the Abrahamic faiths, i.e. Judaism, Christianity and Islam, place due emphasis on duty towards parents and keeping to the promises made or agreements signed, faith systems such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, also embrace these finer human values. …when Abraham told his son Ishmael of having dreamt that he must sacrifice Ishmael and asked the latter’s view, the son promptly told his father to go ahead with fulfilling his dream. “Father,” said Ishmael “do that which you are commanded, God-willing you shall find me patient” (37:102). …

For the Taliban, We are all wajib-ul-qatal

When the Taliban was reminded that the founder of Pakistan was a peaceful, tolerant man, he replied that Jinnah had ‘Ali’ in his name, and so must be a Shia. “We do not accept the Shia as Muslims,” he insisted. From considering the Shia to be non-Muslims, it seems there is only a short step to declaring them wajib-ul-qatal, or deserving of death, preferably by violent means….

Indo-Pak Time is Now

The strengthening of India-Pakistan relations, despite many unresolved issues between them, can work wonders for redefining Pakistan’s national security prerogatives over the medium to long term. With eyes set on a possible breakthrough in relations with India and on the party’s prospects beyond the election, Zardari had a good reason for thanksgiving at Ajmer. …

The Warped Logic of Butcher of Norway

Whether God inspired, or ideologically motivated, the murders perpetrated by Hitler, Breivik, Al Qaeda and ideologies of religious separation and slaughter, he didn’t do a good job of providing them with a strategy. Any idiot can see that the bombing of the World Trade Centre or the killing of innocent people on the London Underground will contribute not an iota to the fall of Western civilisation. This is just self-indulgent murder. …
