    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

A frequent contributor to NewAgeIslam.com, Muhammad Yunus, is an Engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur (1966) and retired as technical director, from a multinational company (1997) and later from a large industrial complex (2010). He has been engaged in an in-depth study of the Qur’an since early 90’s, focusing on its core message and co-authored an exegetic work, “Essential Message of Islam,” which received the approval of al-Azhar al-Sharif, Cairo in 2002, and following restructuring and refinement was endorsed and authenticated by Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl of UCLA, and published in 2009.

Mr. Yunus has penned more than a hundred articles projecting Islam as an inclusive religion of peace, justice, and harmony, dismissing hatred, bigotry, and supremacist, exclusivist and misogynist notions. He has critically evaluated Islam’s secondary sources, advocated inclusion of secular subjects in the madrassa, framed exhaustive refutation of fatwas from leading terror ideologues, exploded the notion of political Islam and Pan-Islamism, and dispelled misconceptions about Islam and its Prophet using authentic sources. He has written a series of articles delegitimizing violent extremism on ideological and historical grounds, and soliciting national and international fatwas against Muslim terror outfits. He has also strongly denounced institutionalized gender injustice and discrimination – particularly against Muslim women. Last but not least, he has proposed an exhaustive package of reforms in populist Islamic thoughts, in tune with the pristine Qur’anic message to distinguish faith from culture and symbolism from the essence and to liberate Islamic societies from the shackles of the Medieval era and the domination of the clergy.

Division of Knowledge between Religious and Secular in the Madrasas Must Be Abolished to Stem the Tide of Islam’s Continued Decline
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

As Europe was availing the fruits of its advancement and transforming its cold, dark and ramshackle villages into shining imageries of paradise (in the words of poet Laureate Muhammad Iqbal) and dotting its towns and cities with splendid museums, libraries, hospitals, universities, and rows upon rows of picturesque residential houses complete with all amenities – gardens, parks, shopping arcades, pharmacies, community centers – among other things, the orthodox Ulema remained in a state of denial and declared all scientific and civilisational advancement of Europe as the handiwork of Shaytan….

Quoting Qur’an’s Fighting Verses In Isolation To Promote Violence Or Defame Islam Amounts To Treacherous Misrepresentation Of Its Message Of Peace And Reconciliation
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Now if a Muslim person of this era quotes 8:60 or 9:5 or 9:13 in isolation disregarding consecutive reconciliatory verses (8:61, 9:6) and their context specificity (9:13) to instigate a group of his followers to commit any form of violence he is likening himself and his followers with the Prophet of Islam and his followers who were the direct recipients of the instructions of these verses. But such selective appropriation of Qur’an’s message to promote violence amounts to treacherous distortion of Qur’anic message....

Reflections on Qur'anic message - Part-13: Broader Dimension of Zakah - ‘Purifying ‘One’s Thoughts by Dispelling Defilements of Mind
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Human mind is constantly stalked by evil thoughts and there is a perpetual tug of war between depravity (Fujurah) and moral uprightness (Taqwa) in man’s sub-conscious mind (Nafs) (91:8, Reflection 7). The depravity of mind can trigger a whole series of mental defilements such as anger, jealousy, greed, arrogance, hatred and contempt of others, cruelty, vengeance, and other negativities, and disturb the equanimity of mind and keep it locked in futile thoughts with adverse impacts on personal, social and family life and in the overall well-being of the community….

Reflections on Qur'anic Message - Part-12: Institutional Zakat - The Bedrock of Islamic Socialism Feeds Islamic Capitalism in This Era – God Witnessing
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

In sum, the populist model of Zakat in this era is liable to gross manipulation or rationalistic interpretation by the rich, who can become richer and richer without sharing their wealth with the poor in any substantive way. This has created virtually an Islamic Capitalism that frustrates the Qur’anic message on social justice, and widens wealth gap and income disparity between the rich and the poor in practically all Muslim countries. Hence, there is an urgent need to redefine the base and arithmetic of Zakat to bring it in line with the economic order of this era…..

Reflections on Qur'anic Message - Part-11: Zakah in Qur’anic Epistemology Denotes Care and Concern for Humanity, Including Charity – It Is the Bedrock of Islamic Humanism
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Traditionally the word Zakat, which appears in the Qur’an repetitively in the expression Aqimus Salata Wa Aatuz Zakata is translated as ‘mandatory charity’ or the institutional Zakat that is collected and disbursed by the Islamic state. The Qur’an, which largely pre-dates the formation of Islamic state under Caliph Umar, connotes this word with care and concern for humanity. Accordingly, the Meccan Muslims (23:4, 31:4), the ancient prophets (21:73) the wives of the Prophet (33:33)and the persecuted followers of Prophet Moses (2:83), who lived prior to the introduction of mandatory Zakat, were asked to exercise Zaka…

Reflections on Qur'anic Message - Part-10: Spending For Others in Need – Or In Charity
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The Qur’an that dominated the social, commercial and civil ethos in early Islam must have greatly reduced the income disparity of the times but the remoteness of the era and from the Qur’anic ideals has turned the clock back by many centuries in the Islamic societies. This is reflected in rampant poverty, rising income disparity, lack of social securities, growing number of beggars and child labor, and an increasing availability of cheap industrial and domestic labor in most 3rd world Muslim countries. Hence, the rich and resourceful Muslims who recite the Arabic Qur’an or listen to its beautiful recitation from U-Tube must also heed what it says…

Reflections on Qur'anic Message - Part-9: The Distinction and Overlap between Moral Uprightness (Taqwa) and Prayer (Salah) In Islam
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

There is no denying the fact that prayer instills the fear of God among great many devotees and restrains them from evil and thus imbues them with Taqwa (29:45), but there are many others who take Salah no more than a routine duty to God without the awareness that just reciting Qur’anic verses and assuming the postures of prayer without any conscious effort to exercise or cultivate Taqwa falls grossly short of the stated objective and solicitation of Salah…

Reflections on Qur'anic Message - Part-8: Universal Notion of Taqwa in the Qur’an – A Level Playing Field Of Self (Nafs) - Dictated Moral Imperative for All Humanity
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Ironically, most Muslims argue that those who are regular in prayer and spend in charity (2:3) are the Muttaqin and will receive the guidance of the Qur’an (2:2). Such an interpretation shifts emphasis from Taqwa to prayer and charity and transforms the din of Islam from one that is designed to promote Taqwa to one that is devoted to prayer and charity (2:4). The Qur’an clarifies the primary role of Taqwa in the concluding verse of the passage (2:5):“the Muttaqin are on true guidance from God.” Across it text, the Qur’an repeatedly declares: it is “guidance and counsel for the Muttaqin” (3:138); it is “counsel for the Muttaqin” (24:34)….

Reflections on Qur'anic Message – Part – 7: Polarity of Goodness and Evil in Human Conscience
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The lead verses represent an extended oath of the Qur’an to the truth of its pronouncement regarding the polarity of man’s inner self (Nafs) between Fujura– that tempts him succumb to his base desires, and Taqwa that is a watchdog against his base desires. The Qur’an also refers to them as Nafs al Ammara, (12:53) - the Nafs that draws man to evil, and Nafs al Lawwama, (75:2) – the Nafs that restrains him from evil.....

    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Reflections on Social Responsibilities in Islam – Part 3
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

There is of course another way to look at the spending trend of this era. The people, who pay heavy taxes and are engaged in a time demanding and stressful job, need change and recreation to regain their energy with recreation, entertainment and travel – none forbidden in Islam. The Qur’an only forbids an obsessive craving to spending money with complete disregard of one’s social responsibilities. Such people, the Qur’an says, have no faith in God or the hereafter and are dominated by the Satan….

Some Muslim Intellectuals of This Era Cry Lies or Half-Truths against Islam Creating Doubts and Suspicions against It – Ignorantly or Fraudulently - God Knows Best
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Scholars are free to hold any view but if they take to lies or half-truths to support their views, they do far greater harm to their community than any good. They become conspirators and traitors.  And as for any Muslim scholar who dreams of editing the Qur’an or dismissing it altogether, he must learn lesson from history. The Moghul Emperor Akbar the Great who styled himself a reformer of Islām - arriving almost 1,000 years after the Prophet Muḥammad, introduced a modified version of Islam, Din e Ilahi. Many liberal Muslims, those seeking the easy highway of life, and the terrorists and extremists – who speculate over the ambiguous verses of the Qur’an with nefarious or political motives may simply ignore them or consign them to the antiquity. But it will not take a great deal of reflection to realize that the above questions are no less relevant for this era than they were in the era of revelation. In fact they are bright red lights on the moral pathways of our life today. But we don’t see them or pretend not to see them. …

Stemming the Ever Rising Tide of Islamophobia in America by Removing Misperceptions
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

In the perception of many Americans who are, if anything, more afraid of Islam today than before, the Sharia Law is inhuman and a threat to American civilization and must be banned. The perception, based on Islamophobic literature is reinforced by ISIS’s justification of its horrendous crimes by the Sharia Law of Islam. The American Muslims on the other hand glorify Sharia Law of Islam as a treasure-chest of noble rulings, without realizing that in the hands of the terror outfits and their ideologues of this era it has lost all its nobility and became an evil institution that is justifiably dreaded and abhorred by the lay Americans...

Having failed to establish its case by telling lies upon lies about the Qur'an in their recent submission as reported by the media and exposed by this writer in his last two articles [3-5], the advocates of triple Talaqs an Islamic custom, have taken to a labyrinthine legal argument to support their case. Triple Talaq Must Be Invalidated Constitutionally and Criminalized – Inclusion of Prohibitive Clause in Nikahnama Could Allow Its Perpetuation by Defaulters
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

No Muslim man will protect himself against any potentially adulterous or homicidal behaviour of his would-be wife by incorporating clauses in the Nikahnama that his wife will not commit adultery or kill her baby child as many women did in Pre-Islamic Arabia (60:12). Since they are expressly forbidden by the Qur’an and entail gross human rights violations and legislatively criminalized, they are, like numerous other aspects of behaviour, unwritten components of Nikahnama. The same should apply for instant triple Talaq. It is expressly forbidden by the Qur’an (58:2, 2:228/2:229), causes grave human rights violations and is enduringly devastating and traumatic to its victim……

Supreme Court Has Already Declared Triple Talaq Invalid – So What Is the Need for the Recent Petition to the Supreme Court
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The Jurists of Islam must know that in Islamic Law only the best of past precedents are valid for any era and those not relevant to the era or cause injustice to any individual or group must be set aside. Hence, no matter which Imams, Caliphs or scholars approved of triple Talaq, they approved it for their time – that is more than a thousand years ago. They never claimed their rulings to be binding for the posterity for all time – a point Imam Abu Hanifa made categorically as mentioned above in this article. So let there be no dilly dallying in declaring constitutionally invalid what is sinful, unlawful, oppressive and immensely dehumanizing to women and gross violation of human rights…..

It exhorts him to be considerate and humane in his conjugal relations by adding a spiritual dimension to marital sexuality (2:223) and dismisses any notion of marital rape by its general prohibition of not taxing anyone beyond his/ her capacity (2:233, 65:7). It entrusts man with care, support and maintenance of his wife (4:34), permits a woman in wedlock to have an independent income and to share it with others (4:32).It abolishes the custom of a man’s abandoning his wife by simply taking an oath without releasing her (2:226).It lays down clear protocol of arbitration to reconcile estranged relations in wedlock (4:35) and sets out a three month time-frame or waiting period for a divorce (2:228/229) to become irrevocable….

'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
